SAMOHI CONCERT BANDS 8
The Samohi Concert Bands present The Darker Side of Music
Concert Band
Du Lebensfürst Johann Sebastian Bach
arr. Mayhew Lake Tonight’s Bach offering is part of BWV (Bach Works Catalogue) 43, a cantata composed in 1726 for the Feast of the Ascension in Leipzig. Although it commemorates a happy event, the final chorale Du Lebensfürst Herr Jesu Christ (Thou, Prince of Life, Lord Jesus Christ) is somewhat worried in tone. The voices ask, “When shall I depart to
where I’ll be happy evermore?”
Music for a Darkened Theatre Danny Elfman
arr. Michael Brown This creepy collection was written by Hollywood’s go-to guy for the quirky and the macabre. From Beetlejuice to Batman Beyond, Elfman’s scores are simply To Die For.
Symphonic Winds
Rhapsodic Celebration Robert Sheldon Robert Sheldon is one of the most prolific and most-performed composers of modern wind band music. His Rhapsodic Celebration includes three distinct movements: the Intrada, which features an uplifting fanfare; the slower, lyrical Serenade; and the Galop, which provides a fast-paced finish to this delightful piece.
Selections from Sweeney Todd Stephen Sondheim
arr. Stephen Bulla In Victorian London, Benjamin Barker’s pretty wife attracts the attention of a
corrupt judge, who has Benjamin exiled for a crime he didn’t commit. Years later, Benjamin returns to London as the barber Sweeney Todd, and quickly learns that his wife is dead. With the help of his fried Mrs. Lovett the pie-maker, Todd takes revenge against the judge and others responsible for the destruction of his family.
Sondheim’s version of the story - a “horror opera” - includes a chilling organ prelude.

Carmina Burana Carl Orff arr. John Krance
Carmina Burana is Latin for “Songs from Beuren,” or Benediktbeuren, an 8th-century Benedictine monastery in southern Germany. The “songs” were a widely disseminated collection of 254 poems and short prose, with themes ranging from morals to gambling
and lovemaking. Carmina Burana rose to new heights of fame in 1936, when Carl Orff set twenty-four of the poems to music, and created one of the most popular cantatas
ever written. Tonight’s performance features the following movements:
1. O Fortuna, velut Luna (“O Fortune, like the Moon,” about fickle Fate)
2. Fortune plango vulnera (“I bemoan the wounds of Fate”)
6. Were diu werlt alle min (“If the world were all mine”) 7. Amor volat undique (“Love flies everywhere”) 9. In taberna quando sumus (a drinking song, “When we are in the tavern”) 10. In trutina (“In Balance,” the precarious balance of the mind) and 13. Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi (“Fortune, Empress of the World”) Tam o’ Shanter Overtrure, Op. 51 Sir Malcolm Arnold
arr. John P. Paynter This overture is based on Robert Burns’ poem about a heavy drinker called “Tam o’
Shanter” for the traditional Scottish hat he wears. Piping flutes and clarinets, half-drunk bassoons and horns set the mood, as foolish Tam leaves the ale-house and rides off into a storm, whipping his mare. Cymbals clash, and thunder roars, until Tam spies witches and
warlocks cavorting at the old haunted church. The instruments accompany the evil dance, at times emitting shrieks and groans, as Tam watches in silence. When a comely
sorceress shows off her tight, cut-off blouse, Tam lets out a catcall: “Weel done, Cutty-sark,” - represented musically by a boorish trombone solo - and the chase is on! Tam rides hard, finally passing over water, which his wicked pursuers dare not cross. Still, one witch manages to grasp and pull off the poor horse’s tail, at which point a chorus of flutes and clarinets moralizes: “Whene’er to drink you are inclin’d / Or cutty-sarks rin in your
mind / Think ye may buy the joys o’er dear / Remember Tam o’ Shanter’s mare.”
Angels in the Architecture Frank Ticheli
May Claire La Plante, Soprano Soloist Frank Ticheli is currently a professor of composition at USC. Many consider Angels in the Architecture (2008) to be his masterpiece. Let your spirit soar!
