Pilot Club of Dallas presented a BrainMinder Safety Program to 255 Kindergarten and First Grade Students at George Washington Carver Elementary School in Garland, Texas. Following, Officer Gooch of the Garland Police Department presented a program on bicycle safety. 255 safety helmets and BrainMinders Activity Books were given to all the children. Funds were obtained by selling pecans in the fall and proceeds from annual spring fundraiser. Helmets were purchased from Prorider.

Judith Finke’s note to KWHI 1280 on April 19

“The BHS Anchor Club and Pilot Club of Brenham appreciates your coverage of our successful Bike Rodeo and Safety Fair (at Wal-Mart Parking Lot). If we can save the brain of one child with our Safety Fair, it is worth all the effort. Six children went home with new bikes and every child attending received a helmet and tokens to Aquatic Center, Silver Wings, Sonic, and badges from Police Dept. along with safety tips for protecting their brain with the BrainMinders puppets and guidance for riding their bikes. “

PILOTS, don’t forget the Press and the “Thank U’s”

Pilot Club of Canyon LakeThe Bicycle Rodeo is a riding course designed to teach young children the importance of bicycle safety and to help them develop the skills they will need to be safe while riding their bicycles. Pilot Club sponsored bike rodeos are held at the two local elementary schools, with miles of duct tape being used to design the four events the young participants will tackle during the rodeo. Pilot Club members direct and score all the events after a Sheriff’s Department team has performed a safety inspection on each bicycle. Certificates and ribbons are awarded by the Pilot Club to all rodeo participants with bicycle helmets being presented to the top three boys and top three girls in each grade level.

Pilot Club of Odessa

The Pilot Club of Odessa participated in a Fall Festival event that showcased “Hard Hats for Little Heads”. Christine Knox, M. D. and pictured to the right helped to obtain helmets.

If the TMA physician is also a member of the Texas Academy of Family  Physicians, additional free helmets are available depending on the amount of helmets purchased.  Pilot Clubs are the ideal community organization to partner with this program, and combining the helmet distribution with a Brain Minders presentation brings both education and gifts to the community.”

Great Idea!

"The Texas Medical Association (TMA) invites you to participate in the Hard Hats for Little Heads program, an initiative to prevent head injuries due to bicycle and scooter accidents.  Funding for the program is provided by grants through the TMA Foundation and allows for a sponsoring TMA member physician to purchase helmets at a significantly discounted cost.  TMA provides educational materials and support for proper fitting and presentation to children at school safety demonstrations, community fairs, wellness and immunization events, or other events.

SO WHAT CAN PILOTS and ANCHORS EXPECT?

Think H.A.P.P.Y. Be H.A.P.P.Y. BE BRAIN FIT!

Today's research indicates that basic healthy lifestyle choices such as increased physical exercise, small dietary changes and better sleep habits have more of a positive effect on long-term mental acuity and brain-health than once thought. Where many people have advocated mentally challenging activities such as puzzles or social interaction to stave off the symptoms of dementia and other cognitive signs of aging, new research indicates a strong positive correlation between increased physical activity and increased gray matter volume in the areas of the human brain that are crucial for cognitive function.

New research also shows that taking measures to find a purpose and remain involved and actively engaged in society - such as participating in clubs and performing community service - also has a strong positive impact on prolonged brain longevity.
