I sure did! I learned so much about culture in Manitoba.
What was the topic?
This week we learned about holidays in Manitoba that occur in the fall.
That does sound interesting. What did you learn?
Well, we focused on Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween and Remembrance Day
Uh huh …
We learned about the traditions that accompany each of
these days and that some of these days are treated
differently than the others.
Well, people observe Halloween, but Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday.

Is there a difference?
Sure! Many businesses are closed during statutory holidays.
Not so with Halloween, right?
Right. It’s only an observance.
Of all the holidays you learned about, what is your favourite?
I really like Thanksgiving I think.
What’s your favourite thing about it?
Most definitely the food! I love getting together with friends and family …. And I love turkey!

When is observed?
Thanksgiving is statutory holiday that is observed the 2nd Monday of each October. Canadians have been observing it at this time since 1957

It’s a day for kids to dress up and go door-to-door asking their neighbors for Candy. They may also have parties.

Dictation 1
Labour Day is celebrated on the 1st Monday of September. It began as a day to fight for better working conditions and pay for workers.
Dictation 2
Halloween is celebrated on October 31st. On this day children will often dress up and go door-to-door asking for candy. They may also collect money for Unicef.
Dictation 3
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the first Monday of October. On this day people often get together and have dinner.
Dictation 4
Many people wear poppies on their clothes in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day. These artificial flowers serve to remind us about the sacrifice brave soldiers made during various wars.

At 11:00 am every Remembrance Day, a moment of silence is observed during a service to remember us about those who died in the war.
