ANCHOR DEVICES
ANCHOR DEVICES: CHOICE AND POSITIONINGTo prevent the risk of falling while carrying out work at height, anchoring devices are used, which are applied to both new buildings of any type of use, and existing buildings, when refurbishing the roof. These devices must meet the requirements of standard EN 795 "Personal equipment for protection against falls - Anchoring devices," the EN standards contained therein and subsequent updates.
TYPES
Single anchoring system to which the personal fall protection device is fastened.
Flexible rope line between end anchors to which a personal fall protection device can be fastened through a connector or a mobile anchor point.
Rigid profile line to which a mobile anchoring device is applied to prevent operators from falling.
ANCHOR POINT FLEXIBLE ANCHOR LINE RIGID ANCHOR LINE
RISK ANALYSIS ROOFING STRUCTURE CHECK IDENTIFICATION OF THE ROOFING ACCESS POINT
LOCATION OF THE COVERAGE PATH
LOCATION OF THE PRIMARY ANCHOR SYSTEM
POSITIONING FOR ANY ADDITIONAL ANCHOR POINTS FOR "SCANDINAVIAN
FLICK" ELIMINATION
An anchoring device is chosen depending on a risk analysis, the roofing shape and the type of structure.

ANCHOR DEVICES
To enable the operator to safely access and move in the roof area, it is necessary to observe some basic aspects, according to the situation in which he/she operates:
POSITIONING OF ANCHOR POINTS
Worker with doublecord for movingbetween anchor points
Worker with afall protection device of a guided typeon an anchor line
Worker with afall protection device of a guided typeon an anchor line and additionalfall protection cord
Safe roofing accessthrough anchor point

21
ANCHOR DEVICES
Anchoring device with one or more anchor points with a need for structural fastening.
Anchoring device employing a flexible line that diverts from the horizontal by not more than 15°.
Anchoring device for use on surfaces diverting from the horizontal by up to 5° where performance is based solely on the mass and friction between the device itself and the surface.
Anchoring device with one or more anchor points without a need for structural fastening.
Anchoring device employing a rigid line that diverts from the horizontal by not more than 15°.
To obtain certification, anchoring devices have to undergo various tests:
• deformation test • dynamic strength and integrity test • static strength test.
In addition to these tests, in order to certify the anchoring devices to be used by several operators, additional tests are performed according to the technical CEN/TS 16415 specification."Personal equipment for protection against falls - Anchoring devices - Recommendations for anchoring devices to be used by several people at the same time."
ANCHOR DEVICES: STANDARDSIn the absence of collective protection equipment, the law provides for the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in combination with anchoring systems tested and manufactured in accordance with EN 795, in order to allow the operator to access, transit and carry out work safely.

DESIGN ACTIONS:FASTENING SYSTEM STATIC VERIFICATIONAnchoring devices are controlled deformation systems, tested in all directions (360°). By stopping a fall, the device is deformed, absorbing some of the energy transmitted by the PPE. Laboratory tests have shown that this deformation may favour fastening systems, which benefit from a reduction in the burden on them and on the underlying structure.
Rothoblaas products are tested and certified in accordance with European standards EN 795:2012 e CEN/TS 16415:2013 by means of tests performed by a notified body with both static and dynamic loads.
Regarding the design action, reference is made to point 7.b of EN 795: 2012, quoting verbatim: "The user shall be equipped with a means of limiting the maximum dynamic forces exerted on the user during the arrest of a fall to a maximum of 6 kN"; this requirement is also reported in all product manuals, therefore we consider this as the design load for the calculation.
The calculation method used is the semi-probabilistic method (limit-state performance). The load is classified as a variable action within the basic combination. The maximum load transmitted by the energy absorber of an operator is thus considered a design action: Qk = 6 kN
Basic combination: Q = Qk · γQ + Wi · γQ
Qk = maximum load transmitted by the energy dissipator EN 355
γQ = 1.5 partial coefficient of variable actions
Wi = 1 kN for each additional operator
RECOMMENDED DESIGN ACTION FOR THE FASTENING SYSTEM STATIC VERIFICATION
LOADS APPLIED DURING TESTS
DEFINITION OF DESIGN LOADS AND METHOD TO TEST
Design values are specified in the individual product pages.
The products marketed by rothoblaas have been tested on different substrates with different fastening systems; these features are specified in the technical sheets and Use and Maintenance manual of each product.

TOWER SUPPORT - CONTROLLED DEFORMATION - FORCE MANAGEMENT
In Anchor Line systems, the Design Actions acting on supports vary depending on the geometry of the system and the type of support. The loads applied during tests act on the rope in the middle of the span as shown in the diagram. By varying the length of the span X and load F, design actions Q acting on supports are determined from laboratory tests. Design values are specified in the individual product pages.
The Tower element has a markedly elastic - plastic behaviour. Thus, for verification purposes, this behaviour must be considered differently from what usually happens when carrying out usual static checks. This behaviour allows reducing the load on the fastening system/structure.
The bending moment that generates the plastic hinge at the base of the metal pole is equal to 3 kNm.

ANCHOR DEVICES
CALCULATION EXAMPLE:FASTENING SYSTEM STATIC VERIFICATIONThe deformability of the anchoring device reduces stop deceleration, thus decreasing the force transferred to the fastening systems. The behaviour of the device also allows the load to be distributed to the fasteners in a balanced way, maximizing performance.
FASTENING SYSTEM CHECK - e.g. HOOK EVO
Rothoblaas HOOK EVO (page 72) is certified as an anchor device according to EN 795/A:2012 for pitched wood roofs, with or without insulation, for an operator equipped with PPE in accordance with EN 361 (full body harnesses) and fall protection systems in accordance with EN 363 (personal equipment for protection against falls). The device was tested at 360°.
Breakage mechanisms emerged from experimental tests show a mechanism of resistance to extractionof the screw thread.
In the verification phase, the value of resistance to extraction of the fastening system screws, will be calculated as the design resistance value.

EQUIPMENT CARE AND MAINTENANCE The care and maintenance of your equipment is essential for the safety of the user.Cuts, abrasions, burns and other signs of wear adversely affect safety: a damaged device may operate improperly and cause accidents, which can be avoided with effective preventive inspections.
CUTSA 2-mm edge cut reduces facricresistance by up to 40%
ULTRA VIOLET DEGRADATIONThe sun and welding can damagetextile components.
ABRASIONSAn abrasion on textile components acts just like a cut when fabric threads are torn.
SEAMSBefore each use it is essential to check that there are no loose, torn, worn or missing threads.
BURNSCaused both by heat sources and by contact with chemical and corrosive substances or materials. In particular, nylon is usually damaged when in contact with acids, and polyester with alkaline substances.
In addition to the normal visual inspection that is done before and after each use, all PPE must be checked by experienced personnel at least annually. Rothoblaas offers the possibility of an annual audit, and control is documented on the PPE booklet attached to each product.
TEXTILE DEVICES
SIGNS OF WEARThe frequent use of the device can determine accelerated wear. The frequency of checks must therefore be directly proportional to the frequency of use.
DEFORMATIONExcessive loads or misuse may result in changes and breakdown of the device.
CORROSION AND OXIDATIONKeep the devices away from moisture and atmospheric agents as they may deterioratetheir functions.
LOOSENED PARTSBefore each use, check the device for integrity (loosened screws, signs of breakage, etc.).

OPERATING LOADWhen carrying out work at height, the suitability of the equipment being used and determiningthe maximum working load is the responsibility of the operator.
According to the different configurations of the anchor device, variable breaking loads are obtained. This aspect is also entrusted to the discretion of the operator who, depending on the type of intervention, will choose the most suitable installation.
BREAKING LOAD
LOAD VARIABLES
SITUATION 1With a reduced angle the load is contained (optimal situation).
SITUATION 2With a larger angle, the load increases (attention to the connecting element being used).
SITUATION 3With a particularly heavy and continuous angle, an excess load is obtained.
When using safety devices for suspended work, you should always bear in mind the load variables, as shown in the following pictures. The greater the angle between the connecting elements, the greater the operating loads.

116
GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF WORK AT HEIGHTThere are different techniques to work at height using ropes. The choice of the correct working technique depends on the purpose of the intervention to be performed. The operator will choose the most suitable PPE depending on the type of intervention to be performed.
Technique used to prevent an operator to reach an area posing a risk of falling (leash principle): cord + work positioning sling (the length of the cord must be such as to prevent the operator from entering the fall zone).
The fall arrest system has the purpose of:
• reducing the distance required to arrest a fall• absorbing the energy of the fall to limit the arresting force
transmitted to the human body• keeping the injured in an appropriate position to limit the
effects of inert suspension.
The required air draught should be provided for. This distance is the free space required under the userto prevent the latter from hitting any obstacle in case of a fall.
• the length of the cords and energy absorbers shall not exceed two metres
• the falling height must be always reduced to a minimum• the calculation of the air draught varies depending on the
system used.
Lengthof the cord +carabiners
Maximum extensionabsorber of energy = 1.75 m
Distance between the anchor pointof the sling and the operator's feet = 1.5 m
Minimum distance between the operator's feetand the ground = 1 m

Working technique that allows the operator to work under tension with its devices, hands free:
• in the case where the risk of falling into the void is null: Sling and positioning cord
• in the case where there is a risk of falling: sling, positioning cord and fall protection system.
During a fall, the user must in no way suffer an arresting force greater than 6 kN. There are two possibilities:
• make sure that the cords remain constantly attached to the anchor points above the level of the head, so as the drop height and the arresting forces generated by it can be minimised.
• if the fall cannot be limited, the arresting force must be absorbed via the most used energy absorbing PPE (energy absorbers and dynamic rope systems).
In case of a fall, the arrest system is designed to minimise the effects of gravity on the human body.Nevertheless, the consequences of a fall are often serious.Inert suspension in any sling can cause serious physiological problems. These problems occur in the case of a prolonged suspension with an unconscious subject, therefore, not able to continuously and autonomously change the support points in its sling.Teams must be trained to bring help to an operator who is unconscious or incapable of self-rescue.

EUROPEAN STANDARDSPPE is divided into first, second and third category devices. The first two categories include devices designed to protect workers performing low to medium risk tasks, whereas the third includes "life saving" devices, designed to ward off the risk of death. The users of these devices are required to take part in specialised courses, in accordance with art. 77 Leg. D. no. 81/2008. Below is a list of the main European Directives on PPE.

CONFINED SPACESConfined space means any limited environment where the risk of death or serious injury is very high, due to the presence of dangerous substances or conditions (e.g. lack of oxygen).
Confined spaces can be easily identified for the presence of small-sized openings, as in the case of:
Several critical situations may occur in confined spaces. The cause is often due to:
LACK OF OXYGEN
FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS
GASES, FUMES OR TOXIC VAPOURS
LIQUID OR SOLID SUBSTANCES
HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF DUST
HIGH TEMPERATURES
RESIDUES INSIDE CISTERNS AND TANKS
In order to identify the necessary measures to ensure the safety of workers, a proper assessment of the risks related to the activities to be carried out should be made. For operations within confined spaces, this involves identifying the hazards present, the risk assessment and the identification of the precautionary measures to be taken.
HAZARDS LINKED TO CONFINED SPACES
LEGISLATIVE PROVISIONS
• pools• combustion chambers inside ovens • pipelines • environments with inadequate or absent ventilation.
• tanks • silos • containers used as reactors • closed drainage systems • sewage systems• open cisterns
For a correct assessment, consider:
• the type of activity • the type of work environment • the materials and equipment to be used • the suitability of employees • the solutions to be adopted for emergency response.

STATIC VALUES
GENERAL PRINCIPLES
• Characteristic values comply with the EN 1995:2008 standard in accordance with ETA-11/0030.
• Design values are obtained from the following characteristic values: The coefficients y m and kmod should be taken according to the current regulations used for the calculation.
• For the mechanical resistance values and the geometry of the screws, reference was made to ETA-11/0030.
• In the calculations, the density of the wood elements was considered equal to ρk
= 380 kg/m3. Characteristic resistances can also be considered as valid for larger densities, for the purposes of safety.
• Values were calculated considering the threaded part as being completely inserted into the wood.
• Sizing and verification of the wooden elements, panels and steel plates must be done separately.
• The shear characteristic resistances are calculated for screws inserted without pre-bored holes. In the case of screws inserted with pre-bored holes, greater resistance values can be obtained.
• For different calculation methods, the myProject software is available free of charge. (www.rothoblaas.com)
• The characteristic resistances were calculated using solid wood or glulam. In the case of joints with X-Lam elements, the resistance values may be different and should be calculated on the basis of the characteristics of the panel and the connection configuration.
• Full list of codes and technical data available in the "Screws for wood" catalogue (www.rothoblaas.com)
NOTES
(1) The shear characteristic resistances are calculated considering the case of a thin plate (SPLATE ≤ 0.5 d1).(2) The shear characteristic resistances are calculated considering the case of a thick plate (SPLATE ≥ d1).(3) The axial thread-extraction resistance was calculated considering a 90° angle between the grain and the connector and for a fixing length of b.(4) The axial resistance to head penetration was calculated using wood elements. In the case of steel-wood connections, generally the steel tensile strength is binding with respect to head separation or penetration.

b = L - 10 mm represents the entire length of the threaded part.Sg = (L - 10 mm - 10 mm - Tol.) / 2 represents the half-length of the threaded part net of a laying tolerance (Tol.) of 10 mm. The wood-wood extraction, shear and sliding values were calculated placing the centre of gravity of the connector in correspondence with the shear plane and considering an effective thread of Sg.

• Sizing and verification of the wooden elements, panels and steel plates must be done separately.
• The shear characteristic resistances are calculated for screws inserted without pre-bored holes. In the case of screws inserted with pre-bored holes, greater resistance values can be obtained.
• The wood-wood extraction, shear and sliding values were calculated considering the centre of gravity of the connector placed in correspondence with the shear plane.
• The characteristic resistances were calculated using solid wood or glulam. In the case of joints with X-Lam elements, the resistance values may be different and should be calculated on the basis of the characteristics of the panel and the connection configuration.
• Full technical data is available in the "Screws for wood" catalogue (www.rothoblaas.com)
NOTES
(1) The tensile design strength of the connector is the lower between the wood-side design strength (Rax,d) and the steel side design strength (Rtens,d).
(2) The compression design strength of the connector is the lower between the wood-side design strength (Rax,d) and the instability design strength (Rki,d).
(3) The axial resistance of the thread to extraction was calculated considering a 90° angle between the fibres and the connector and for a effective thread length of b or sg. For intermediate sg values it is possible to interpolate linearly.
