Fall Out Boy – Alone Together Establishing shot shows codes/Conventions of a scary rock place. Blacked out scary corridor with only a few lights on and a sense that you are all alone and boxed in/ Trapped.Blue lighting also creates a cold isolated feel. The shot turns to tracking Shot of a stereo typical girl walking down the corridor confidently. Although we only see a shadow of the girl we an tell she fits in with the male gaze. As she is wearing shorts, lose floaty clothing, tall skinny and with long hair which is what guys will find attractive stereotypically. The way she walks with a brief case shows confidence and a sense of power and no fear.A low angle shot is used to show the brief case with handcuffs . The handcuffs are also a convention of the male gaze as it is associated with a sexual nature. This shot also shows a posh black car which looks suspicious.

This shot with the title alone together shows the title of the song and foreshadows what may happen in the video. The gates in the back ground resemble being locked in similar to the handcuffs. The shadow of the girl also suggests that the song is about a female and more women will be in the video. From this information so far including the iconic images associated with sex and the male gaze I can assume the target audience will be mainly males 16-25 year olds I also feel that with the bands past success that the band will have older fans too as well as female fans who like their music.

This shot of one of the band members padlocked in a suit with a spot light on him, on stage creates an unsettling atmosphere. The lighting and blue curtains give a sense of being under pressure and isolated. This long shot is framed by the lighting used on both sides of the stage as well as the spotlight which helps divert all our attention to the struggle of the artist in the suit. This medium shot introduces more intensity to the music video and makes the audience emphasise with the emotions expressed by another band member as the shot allows him to show expression of stress and anger.

This shot shows completely different room and colour scheme to the first band member but at the same time they are both restraint. In the first shot the colours are blue and dark which represent sadness, the Anger/ danger and psychotic atmosphere is introduced in this shot with the use of dingy Yellow Lighting to represent freakiness. Also his psychotic behaviour shown in the shot draws the audience in to wonder what is really happening.

Due to movement in the scene and based on the camera angle the singer stabs the girl by a pretend hug .. This violent scene is implied as we can then let our imagination take a part in how it looks/ feels making the audience think more and engage more in the video.

Dull Lighting in the shots below add emphasis to the Action of stabbing with hock as it creates a dark atmosphere to create fear. The stabbing is implied by bBlood Splattered everywhere and by the facial expressions and reaction from what the killer has done himself. These shots have an increased cutting rate to add emphasis and are not framed inn anyway as well and a little canted. This also helps to add to the psychotic events of the video.

This long shot is set up with the framing of the symmetrical sides of a church setting. Again a third band member is restraint. The framing and use of dimn lighting allows the audience to be directed to the main significance of the band member. The church setting associates to religiousness and the devil which is also related to the Rock Genre convention. This may suggest to the audience something dark and sinister will happen in this gloomy place.

The medium shot introduces the female character with long blonde hair which is stereotypically attractive to the male gaze. She takes control of him her rebellious attitude shows how she relates to the rock rebelliousness. The next long shot of the fourth band member wastes no time in introducing and shows a sexual kissing scene between a female with long hair, wearing leather and a hook. These conventions of rock and the male gaze show she is portrayed to be attractive but also scary as she has a hook in her hand. The Mise-en-scene shows naked female mannequins with cameras which create a crowded uncomfortable feeling as the mannequins are dominant and naked . The cameras add emphasis to the feeling of being watched and under pressure. In the bottom shot, The long shot of two girls dominating over the band member in the church introduces another woman what they are wearing .(barely any clothing again relates to the male gaze making the woman look like sex symbols. The red lighting relates to a devil rebellious mood as well as a subconcious warning/ Danger sign to the audience. It emphasises the implying of bad behaviour from the women.

By now the lyrics ‘lets be alone together’ makes sense and is ironic to the video. As the artists are all alone but with females .

Tracking Shot side ways casually showing dead girl. Gives audience confirmation of what happened to the girl in a swift shot.

(Tracking shot Forward into a medium close-up) Fast movement justifies the narrative and chaotic song. ‘lets be alone together’ – Shows the relationship between the artists and females are messed up and have effected them mentally and physically. More uncomforting and distress is made when the camera also moves in a canted style. Back and forth almost in a swish-pan shot style.

Direct Current on the scale shown by a close up- fast cut Increases making more tension in the video and also implies the amount of current being passed into the restraint artist which makes more sense as to why he is in soo much pain.

Canted tracking shot as band member runs away form the scene is used to emphasis

panicking . Video moving on. A long shot of naughty ‘cheeky devil’ stereo typed kids also associated with the rock genre is introduced. Disrespecting fruit and vegetables and in school uniform enhance their stereo type of naughty children.

The next three close ups of the three girls introduce the characteristic of the children the order of showing the shots show that there are twins as well as a blonde girl splitting it them up so audience do not get confused. The facial expressions show that they re scary naughty children. The shots are shown in time with the music ‘Screaming at the top of your lungs, lungs , lungs’ the cutting rate is fast the split second we get to see the shot is all we need to see the characteristics. This relates to the theory of Andrew Goodwin: ‘There is a relationship between music and visuals’.. The three shots communicate in time with the music.

This close up shot foreshadows the events to come.

This shot shows the artist getting tortured by the kids as he gets hit with eggs. This torture is different to the rest of the torturing in the video as its by children and acts of disrespecting but the others are all tortured by female women. And show signs of sexual references in the scenes this scene just shows the acts of Evil children.

This slightly slanted shot relates again with the music rhythm as well as the lyrics as even though the artist is in pain he sings the song ‘Say yeah!’ This relates to Andrew Goodwin’s theory: ‘there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals’.By now the audience will pick up that the video is an episodic video as the shots switch between each individual situation between the band members.

This shot last a bit longer than the usual shots as it gives the audience chance to analyse the explosive material in the dark room which creates a n atmosphere of fear.

The two shots of objects show references to the rock genre showing drum sticks and comics with a rock genre audience which will relate to the audience of the music video.

The Vinyl disc an d records relate to past music setting the scene inside the room along with the explosives. The first shot pans sideways and the vinyl shot pans downwards. This allows the shots to flow with the music. The last shot follows onto another long shot of the band member sliding down a door. The downward motion creates a matched cut.

This close up shot of the girl flicking a switch on the wall after seeing her friend dead on the floor from earlier sets the panic warning atmosphere as the switch activates a n alarm with a red light. This adds to the intensity of the video creating build up towards the end.

This long shot takes us back to the mysterious corridor we have seen a few times. The lighting has changed in the building with pink lights to emphasis the redness. In this shot the artist running down it before returns and tries to exit the building. This shot is framed with the matching doors on the sides and long vertical pathway. This adds to the motif of the artist trying to escape and being trapped. This Shot shows the kids enjoying the hectic situation as every room turns red with the implied alarms.

This tracking shot follows the running artist down the corridor. As the camera gets closer towards the doors the girls run out this surprises the audiences as they don’t expect it. and the fast tracking and running forward emphasises the shock and panic motif in the video.

This Low angle shot is also an eye line match shot to show the artist on the floor getting it by the two females. This allows the audience to get down to his level and empathise with what he feels.

The hourglass shot is a close – up from top to bottom using a downward tracking shot. This close up tells the audience that this object is significant. The hourglass resembles time and leads back to panicking as the shots in the videos have an increased cutting rate and the events in the video create a panic/ under pressure feel.

This shot is a forward tracking shot swaying side to side.. As the artist enters the room the shot changes to another character restraint and panicking in a room this shot is emphasised again the camera swaying side to side more franticly creating more of a canted style.

This shot shows a zoom in as well as tracking forward to show the band member has turn to a devil like character through the use of yellow editing/ contacts lenses in the character’s eyes. This tells the audience the person has changed physically and maybe mentally to an evil character .

From this development in the video with the yellow eyes the rest of the video becomes more creepy and intense. This shot is a shot of a woman chasing one of the characters trying to escape.. The cutting rate has increased more in this section and this specific shot is speeded up to create a faster non-realistic style. Out of this world like the devil style features .

This shot of the woman caressing the screen is a creepy shot adding to the devil-like out of this world attitude that is slowly developing. This shot comes after shot of the woman crawling towards the TV which also adds an animalistic non human style almost like she is possessed.

The shot of the hands show a band member trying to help his friend. But as he tries an electrical current is passed indicated by special effects around the wrists. And camera turns side ways a little before tracking upwards to show the expression on the mans face. This shot is then matched by a following shot of another band member in a different room screaming.

To end the video a fade out of the last shot into a black screen and fade in , back to a different shot is made. The fade into the next shot shows the band members leaving with bags on their heads being escorted by the females. This shows an ending which is to be continued.
