Hebrew-in-a-Day MARATHON Continued

• beabletoread180importantHebrewwords!• haveapositive, joyfulrelationshipwiththelanguageofourheritage! How it works: Prior to the Marathon you will be given a list of words to review, the Vocabulary of Jewish Life (VJL) — words already in your Jewish vocabulary, written with English letters. On the day of the Marathon you will use the VJL and the workbook While Standing On One Foot, to help you learn to read those same words written with Hebrew letters! Space is limited and tends to fill up fast. Cost is $40 for members; $55 for guests. Call the B’nai Havurah office, 303-388-4441 x10, to register and pay for the class, and to get your copy of the “Vocabulary of Jewish Life” e-mailed to you in advance. Israel Through the Listening GlassSundays, October 30-December 18, 12:30-1:30 pm (no class Nov. 6) In this 6-session class we’ll look at Israel’s cultural development through the kaleido-scope of popular Israeli music. We’ll see different approaches to serving in the army, desire for peace, for a girlfriend, for a family. We’ll look at the use of metaphor and language. Israeli pop music is sung in the same language as our Torah, making the lyrics fascinating in and of themselves. Add melody and rhythm and the message really takes on life.Teacher: Rabbi Evette Lutman with guest presentersDates: October 30, November 13, November 20, December 4, December 18

The Radical American Judaism of Mordecai M. KaplanA Study Group based on Mel Scult’s bookEvery other Friday through May 19, 2017, 11:30 am-1:00 pm “Mordecai M. Kaplan, founder of the Jewish Reconstructionist movement, is the only rabbi to have been excommunicated by the Orthodox rabbinical establishment in America. Kaplan was indeed a radical, rejecting such fundamental Jewish beliefs as the concept of the chosen people and a supernatural God. Although he valued the Jewish community and was a committed Zionist, his primary concern was the spiritual fulfillment of the individual. Drawing on Kaplan’s 27-volume diary, Mel Scult describes the development of Kaplan’s radical theology in dialogue with the thinkers and writers who mattered to him most, from Spinoza to Emerson and from Ahad Ha-Am and Matthew Arnold to Felix Adler, John Dewey, and Abraham Joshua Heschel. This gracefully argued book, with its sensitive insights into the beliefs of a revolutionary Jewish thinker, makes a powerful contribution to modern Judaism and to contemporary American religious thought.” —Indiana University Press The structure will be participatory. Facilitators: Sally Stich and Ed Towbin.

Geniza, or What’s in the Attic? Saturday, November 5 after Kiddush (about 12:15 pm-2:15 pm) OK, so you’ve heard of the Cairo Geniza — but how about the Lakewood Geniza? Just what is geniza, anyway? And why are there two? Well, there aren’t really two — there are probably thousands, in every place where Jews write or print the name of God. What do we do with those materials? What does halakhah say we should do? Do we need to reconstruct those rules? Join us as we explore the world of genizot. Registration requested. No cost for members; $5 for non-members. Facilitator: Pat Madsen, a B’nai Havurah member for the better part of 30 years, has written liturgy, studied for a master’s in Judaic Studies, helped plan many JWRC/Kol Nashim Women’s Retreats, sat as a judge, practiced law, acted in local theaters, read more than is necessary, and taught at the Denver Institute for Jewish Studies.

Film: The Flat Saturday, November 5, 6:30-9:00 pm The Flat, an Israeli-German co-production from 2011, was released in Israel and played continu-ously for 13 months, receiving rave reviews. The film opens as the director, Arnon Goldfinger, and his family are gathered in the Tel Aviv apartment of his mother’s mother, Gerda Tuchler, to clear out the contents after her death. It is not long, however, before Goldfinger finds various items in his grandmother’s house that reveal an astonishing chapter in the family’s history that had been hidden for decades. We will have a snack at 6:30. The movie begins at 7:00 pm, with a discussion to follow. Registration requested. No cost for members; $5 for non-members. Facilitator: Simon Zalkind, B’nai Havurah member, is an independent curator and art advisor specializing in modern and contemporary art. He has worked with numerous institutions, corporations and collectors in curating collections and exhibitions, including The Brooklyn Museum, The Neuberger Museum, The Denver Art Museum, Redline, the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Singer Gallery at the MACC, and many others. Simon has a Master’s degree in Religious Studies from DU and the Iliff School of Theology.

Pius XII and the Holocaust Thursday, December 1, 7:00-9:00 pm (with continued discussion on December 8 at 7:00 pm, as desired by participants) There are numerous and emotionally fraught questions and controversies that surround Pope Pius XII’s policies and decisions during the Nazi reign of terror in Europe during the 1930s and 40s. Many unanswered questions remain. Did the Pope resist the Nazis or did he acquiesce by failing to protest the murder of Europe’s Jews loudly and clearly? Why has world — and Jewish — opinion shifted from praising Pius in the post-Second World War years to excoriating him, starting in the mid-1960s? In order to begin to grapple with the issues and the facts we need to Continued on page 7

Tour of West Colfax Neighborhood Sunday, Nov. 6, 11:00 am-1:00 pm In the early 20th century, a vibrant Jewish community emerged along West Colfax Avenue west of Federal Boulevard. There were synagogues, numerous community-welfare institutions, and an early Jewish community center. The area included a place for non-religious Jews and a strong Jewish labor/socialist movement. We will visit some of these spots in a two-hour tour. Gather just to the west of Lake Middle School at the benches on the west side of Meade Street between West 18th and 19th Avenues. (Parking restrictions do not apply on Sundays.) Meade Street does not cut through to Colfax. Take Colfax to Lowell Boulevard until it dead ends into Lake Middle School at West 18th Avenue. Go one block west, turn right, and park on the run parallel to Sloan’s Lake. Registration required. $15/person, 12-person minimum. Facilitator: Phil Goodstein grew up in the BMH. While not active in the Jewish community, Phil is its historian. His more than 20 books include Exploring Jewish Colorado and North Side Story. He has been giving walking tours of the city since 1986.

Grants through Tikkun Olam help repair the world The Tikkun Olam Committee provides grants to programs committed to “Repairing the World.” Each recipient is recommended by a B’nai Havurah member. Unfortunately, the demand for these grants in 2016 surpassed resources available through Half-Shekel Fund contributions. Grants have been awarded to projects sponsored by groups such as B’nai Havurah’s Inclusivity Committee, Women4Women Knitting4Peace, Place Bridge Academy, Jewish Family Service, the Kenya-based Sharing Hope for Communities and the Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Alliance. To learn more about applying for a grant and to obtain the grant proposal, visit our website at bnaihavurah.org. Our Tikkun Olam grant program is a key component of B’nai Havurah’s mission. Please consider making a donation to this very important fund by calling our office at 303-388-4441 or visiting our website (look for the “donate” button in the upper right hand corner).

Positioning B’nai: a Social Justice Policy for B’nai Havurah Mordecai Kaplan, a founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, believed fervently that working for social justice is at the heart of Jewish practice. Until now, B’nai Havurah had no policy for how to support issues of social justice. In August of 2016, the B’nai Havurah Board of Trustees instituted a Social Justice Policy. Anyone who is part of B’nai — our Rabbi, havurah, individual member — can ask that B’nai Havurah take a public position on an issue. ‘Taking a public position’ may be anything from holding up the B’nai banner at a rally, demonstration or parade, to using B’nai’s name in joining a coalition on an issue, to signing a public statement or asking others to sign a public position paper. To learn more about our social justice program and how you might get involved, go to www.bnaihavurah.org/socialjusticepolicy or contact Glenn Cooper, 303-377-1291, [email protected].

Chesed Committee As a community we are committed to gemilut chesed, doing kind things for others in small and large ways. Connect with B’nai Havurah B’nai Havurah is participatory. In the olden days, we ran exclusively with volunteers. Times change. Life changes. B’nai Havurah grew. We hired a rabbi. We hired staff to keep us in line and keep the roof over our heads. Over the last 53 years, our participatory identity has never changed. This year B’nai Havurah offers you a myriad of exciting, educational, artistic, culinary, detailed, and administrative opportunities to volunteer. B’nai Havurah needs your participation to continue our way of life as a participatory Reconstructionist congregation. Benefits to you from volunteering abound: meet new people, learn new skills, make new friends, give back to the world, contribute to the Jewish identity of upcoming generations, develop a sense of belonging, and make sure that B’nai Havurah is the community you want it to be. The appearance in Denver of a key figure in the

Reconstructionist movement — Rabbi Ira Eisenstein — at

the 1961 B’nai Brith Summer Institute inspired some of the

listeners to form a havurah (group for study and fellowship).

This havurah was the beginning of B’nai Havurah. Two years

after Eisenstein’s appearance, the group had grown to 12 to

15 couples, and in 1963 they affiliated with the Reconstruc-

tionist movement. Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan himself visited the

fledgling congregation in 1964. When the group had grown

to four havurot, members began a religious school for their

children.

Our Rabbis: We continued to grow, hiring our first

Reconstructionist rabbi, Steven Kaye, in 1983. Rabbis Brant

Rosen and Stephen Booth-Nadav followed. Our present rabbi,

Evette Lutman, has been with us since 2010.

Our Facilities: In 1995 we purchased our current

building on Ohio Ave. Our home includes a sanctuary/

meeting room, library, classrooms, multi-purpose room/

kitchen and administrative offices.

Our Members come from many different walks of life.

Families of various compositions continue to form havurot,

send their children to our school, take adult classes, create

diverse services, volunteer in a number of ways, engage in

community service and develop innovative programs. To find

out more, call 303-388-4441.
