King George V Fields King George V Playing Field to the south of Dorking is one of 476 playing !elds dedicated to the memory of King George V. The site was dedicated for public bene!t, and to be used for outdoor sport, games, children’s play and informal recreation for all time. Local residents have formed a Friends Group for the playing !eld in response to the Community Links Partnership of the Chart Downs, Goodwyns, Rough Rew and North Holmwood areas which lie to the south of Dorking Town. The playing !eld is located centrally within these neighbourhoods, and is the home ground of Mole Valley Girls and Mole Valley Rangers junior football teams.

The Friends group started up in July 2011, operating from a small kitchen within a new pavilion that was built using grant funding from the Football Foundation. The Friends serve light refreshments, and opening times (which vary seasonally) are published on 4 new noticeboards at entrances to the site, provided by Mole Valley Housing Association. There have also been a number of activities during school holidays, jointly hosted by the Friends and Mole Valley District Council. Everyone is welcome, although some events require adults to supervise their children. Details of future events are similarly advertised on the local noticeboards.

You can contact the group via its website page on the Mole Valley District Council website: molevalley.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=12493, via Facebook (Friends of KGV Dorking), or best of all come along to the pavilion for a chat. The volunteers serving you will be pleased to tell you all about activities coming up, and delighted if you o"er to help with any of their initiatives.

Ashtead Pond Makeover Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) is improving local beauty spot Ashtead Pond, for residents and wildlife. The makeover includes the open spaces surrounding

the pond on the corner of Wood!eld Lane and Barnett Wood Lane.

Councillor James Friend said: “Residents have been really supportive of the decision to use the funds generated by local developments to improve what is a central and charming feature of the village.

“We want to create a better habitat for a variety of plants and animals, while also improving the look of the margins of the

pond. We’ve had some great ideas from the local community.

Specialist schools sports festivalSpecialist schools from throughout Surrey congregated for a Paralympics-themed Sports Festival, held especially for young people with profound and multiple learning di#culties.

Young people at The Children’s Trust in Tadworth welcomed each school, which represented a di"erent country during the event on June 27.

Af ter a t r iumphant opening ceremony, over 120 children enjoyed a variety of games on the Trust’s lawns, including hockey, football, rugby, boccia and archery.

Hi there,As summer turns to autumn and the kids are back at school, it’s time to think about nurturing their talents and balancing their workload with activities out of school. We’ve brought you the biggest Clubs and Classes Directory yet. See pages 11-19, all updated for 2012-2013 and brimming with ideas to engage kids’ bodies and minds.

Not every child sails through school – the article on specialist help for dyslexia on page 20 is from Bury’s Court School, which provides the expertise to ensure all dyslexic children blossom.

This magazine is all about families and kids – but we’ve sneaked in a little extra for new mums who want to get their strength and !gure back, see Time for Mums on page 8 and the new Ante- and Post Natal section of the Directory on page 19!

As harvest time turns into Halloween, you’ve time to plan some spooky fun for half term – and it’s all there on pages 5-7.

Every girl deserves a pretty dress If you have a daughter, chances are she has plenty of pretty dresses to choose from, so spare a thought for the children growing up in poverty in countries like Malawi, Kenya, India, Uganda and Ghana who do not own a single one.

If you have some basic sewing skills, there is a way you can make a di"erence with a charity called Dress A Girl Around the World which collects handmade dresses and arranges for them to be sent to projects in the relevant countries.

1,170 dresses and 178 pairs of shorts have already been distributed to children in Malawi, Kenya, India, Uganda and Ghana. More are expected to go out over the next few months as volunteers take trips to orphanages and school projects across the World.

Dress A Girl Around the World is still looking for people to help make dresses - or boys shorts, bags, hair bands and bracelets. There are plenty of tips on founder member Louise Horler’s blog if you need them. Louise is also looking for people in the UK who are visiting charitable projects abroad to take and distribute dresses.

For more information, sewing tips or to see the dresses that people in the UK have made please visit: sewscrumptious.blogspot.com or Facebook: facebook.com/DressagirlaroundtheWorldUKor Twitter: @SewScrumptiousor contact Louise by email on [email protected]

Stem Cell StorageIn our article about saving your child’s stem cells from the umbilical cord or from dental pulp, we also mentioned the NHS’s cord blood bank that is maintained for the general public rather than just for your child. A slight inaccuracy crept into the web address we gave, which should read: nhsbt.nhs.uk/cordblood/

Cash for Community Groups – Apply Now!

Nearly 30 groups have already signalled an interest in bidding for a slice of more than £350,000 available for projects that make a di!erence to communities. There is £357,000 still up for grabs from a fund launched by Surrey County Council leader David Hodge to help residents improve their local areas. A community cafe at Strood Green, a meals on wheels service at Box Hill and a Weybridge scout hall were among the !rst 17 projects to win cash in May.

Proposals being developed include one to create community allotments and another to help new mums and young parents, that includes a service to pass on children’s clothes.

Council leader David Hodge said “All the schemes that have already won cash are great examples of the county council and residents joining together to make Surrey an even better place to live. There’s still £357,000 available and I’m looking forward to seeing even more communities get schemes o" the ground that make a real di"erence for local people.”

Bids can be made for between £10,000 and £50,000. The deadline for applications is 28 September and a panel of councillors will then draw up a shortlist for Mr Hodge to consider in November.

More details about the fund can be found at surreycc.gov.uk/communityimprovementsfund.

Bread binned could !ll a double decker bus a dayEvery day in Surrey people throw out enough bread to !ll a double decker bus. And enough salad will be binned in the county this summer to !ll an Olympic size swimming pool.

The startling statistics form part of Surrey County Council’s Love Food Surrey campaign, which is encouraging people to waste less food.

Through shopping smarter and re-using leftovers, it’s estimated the average family could save up to £50 on their monthly shopping.

For food waste that can’t be avoided, residents are urged to use their kerbside food waste collection service where avaiable. By collecting food separately from general waste it can be processed in a more environmentally friendly way and turned into fertiliser.

For advice on planning your shopping, portion control, recipe ideas and more, visit lovefoodsurrey.com where you can also sign up to our regular e-newsletter.

Woodlands Day CareWe left one important Oxted Nursery out of our Nursery listings in the July-August issue. Dean and Miranda Walker began o"ering childminding in 1995, taking 6 children. The success of their work and the development into a full daycare nursery is a testament to their hard work and devotion to the children they look after.

Woodlands Day Care is run by husband and wife team Dean and Miranda Walker from their home close to Oxted countryside. They and their team now provide outstanding care for 17 children from birth to 8 years old incorporating an on-site pre-school with a 3:1 ratio, irrespective of age, 8am - 6pm Monday to Friday.

With ample play space in four rooms and a secure garden allowing free $ow play, the children also regularly go on outings including visits to National Trust and English Heritage sites, local parks and playgroups. Organically produced home-cooked meals and regular drinks are available daily.

The decision to step up from child-minding to a full-scale nursery was not a di#cult one for Dean and Miranda. They love having a house full of children and underwent all the required training in !rst aid, behaviour management and food hygiene, as did all their sta". They are both recognised as Early Years Professionals.

As Miranda said “We haven’t looked back! We create a di"erent type of environment in all rooms: one is the chilled room for either a story time or some quiet time, another is where all the age and stage appropriate I.C.T. toys can be found and toys which are rotated for our curriculum themes are situated in the lounge. The children also have free $ow of play so they can choose to play outside at anytime of year. We have an extensive decked area, which is covered with UVA+ UVB protection; this enables the children to be able to go outside no matter the weather conditions to let o" steam.”

As food prices continue to rise around the world, it’s a sobering thought to know that UK families waste up to £50 a month throwing away uneaten food.We also know that cutting down on food waste can be a challenge, especially when you’re pushed for time or your kids don’t always want to eat what you’ve cooked for them.

So to help you waste less, Surrey County Council’s Love Food Surrey campaign provides helpful tips on how to save more and waste less, but for the food waste you can’t avoid, you can use your kerbside food waste collection service. By collecting food separately from general waste it can be processed in a more environmentally friendly way and turned into fertiliser for use on farms.

Taking just one small step to reduce food

environment and save you money too. We hope our tips will inspire you to take that step.

It pays to plan Before you do your next big shop, check what you have left, be creative and make a meal planner for the week, so you only buy what you need.

Perfect portions Weighing and measuring food is the best way to cook

perfect portions. To help, use mugs, spoons, spaghetti measures or weighing scales so that you can work out just the right amount of food to cook for your family.

Lovely leftovers If you’ve cooked too much, cool your leftovers as soon as possible, store in the fridge and eat within 2 days, or freeze them for another time. You could try to use the leftovers for another meal; take a look at what you already have in your kitchen to help.

Store food properly Correct storage means your food could live for extra days, weeks or even months. Keep the fridge below 5°C and chilled food will stay fresh for longer.

Use by These dates are for safety and must be followed correctly; don’t use any food after the end of the ‘use by’ date, even if it looks and

this date could put your health at risk. To extend the life of food beyond this date, freeze it before the date, defrost when needed and use within 24 hours.

Best before These dates refer to quality not to food safety; foods with a ‘best before’ date should be safe to eat after this date (except for eggs), but they may no longer be at their best.

What a wasteResearch indicates that Surrey residents produce about 80,000 tonnes of food waste every year, with treatment and disposal costs in the region of £6.7 million. Just think about all the energy, water and packaging used in food production, transportation and storage that goes to waste when we throw away good food.

For advice on planning your shopping, portion control, recipe ideas and more, visitwww.lovefoodsurrey.com where you can also sign up to our regular e-newsletter.

Making Surrey a better place

Are you throwing money away?Did you know? This summer in Surrey we threw away enough salad

size swimming pool

Every day in Surrey we throw away enough bread

double decker bus

This autumn in Surrey we will throw away enough potatoes to cover 6 football pitches

So cut what you can...

It’s not just Olympic fever! Children who participate in after-school programmes have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations. They’re less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of obesity. It is also a great opportunity for children to develop social and leadership skills. These are the conclusions of recent research. Making sure your child is involved in fun and sporting activities can start a virtuous circle. This Directory of Clubs and Classes has been updated for 2012-2013. Many popular activities are presented by town or village to help you !nd the nearest classes. Many o"er free trials – so ask about that when you call. And mention that you saw their details in Families Surrey East! Some classes need to be booked; some are term-time only. Start dates vary: some begin at the start of the school term and take a break at half-term.

Specialist Help for DyslexiaOne in ten people are dyslexic to some degree, research suggests. Despite being bright and articulate they struggle with reading and spelling and can be disorganised.

Dyslexia runs in families, although not everyone in a family will inherit the gene and be dyslexic. Parents who are dyslexic can often recognise it in their children at an early age.

The most e"ective method for teaching all children how to decode words they have not seen before is a carefully structured phonic system. The current change to using phonics in schools should enable a majority of children to read $uently. However, while a non-dyslexic child might remember a word after seeing it a maximum of !fty times, a severely dyslexic child, who cannot hold a picture of a word in visual memory, might need to decode a word over a thousand times before he or she can recognise it without sounding it out. This is why dyslexic children fall behind the rest of the class and need early help from a dyslexia specialist to enable them to reach their full potential.

No two dyslexic people are alike in their di#culties, but for dyslexics spelling is almost always harder to master than reading. In order to spell we need to have a picture of the word in our head. People who have a very poor visual memory cannot do so. They are the classic word-blind dyslexics.

Because many dyslexic children have poor working memories and need longer to process what they read, they can !nd it very di#cult to work as quickly as their friends in class. They work well in small groups with teachers who use multisensory methods with lots of revision done in interesting ways.

There are advantages to dyslexia. People who are dyslexic often have a highly developed

right brain that makes them very good at three dimensional thinking. Many gifted artists, architects, engineers, musicians and entrepreneurs have been dyslexic.

Fortunately there is much more help available for dyslexic children and adults nowadays. With the right

support dyslexic people can !nd their talents and lead highly successful lives despite their ‘hidden handicap’.

Back to School: Give your child a head start with online teaching resources The READING EGGS program has been designed for 3-7 year olds but is also suitable for older children who are struggling with reading. Spelling lessons, grammar, stories and games all keep children motivated. It uses the phonics teaching system to support children’s school learning.

Reading Eggspress, designed for 7-13 year olds, focuses on grammar and $uency. It includes a Comprehension Gym where lessons are completed, the Library with over 1000 e-books and the Stadium where they can compete against the computer to test their comprehension and grammar knowledge.

Both programs are also suitable for home educators. Subscription costs £29.95 for six months, £39.95 for twelve, with a 50% family discount for siblings.

To trial both programs FREE for 5 weeks visit www.readingeggs.co.uk, click the ‘Parents click here’ button and follow the set up instructions. Once your account has been activated and you have added a child enter code UKB24SRE.
