welcometo familiesMuch as I fully embrace all aspects of technology, I must admit that I can’t wait to get out of the country and switch everything off.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against my kids playing on a tablet or games console – within reason – but holidays for me are increasingly becoming about seizing an opportunity for all of us to be gadget free. As someone who works at a computer most days and has my hand clamped to my mobile in between times, the sheer joy of not checking an email for a couple of weeks cannot be beaten!

Getting the technology balance right with my children is always a bit tricky but luckily they both have lots of interests that take them away from the house and have them interacting with others, playing sports or acting, singing and dancing. Summer is the perfect time to try out something new – see our summer holiday guide in this issue for some ideas of how to prise them away from the screen and discover something new.

I intend to spend huge chunks of my summer reading, as I don’t have the opportunity to indulge as much as I would like.

I trust a Kindle is not considered ‘technology’…?

Yorkshire Eco-Singer at Harrogate Grammar The state of our environment has been a topic of much discussion for years, and with worrying effects of climate change and the damage pollution is shown to do to health, singer songwriter James King has decided to try and educate the youth of today in the hope of bettering the planet we inhabit.Twenty-year-old Yorkshire born James has previously put his musical talents to good use by completing a 50 date UK eco schools tour with the charity Keep Britain Tidy, educating pupils about the importance of environmental issues with profound messages within his music. He has just visited Harrogate Grammar School where he performed and led a workshop for music scholars. His song,  Breathe, launched the International Breathe campaign during the  Extinction  film premiere at the Prince Charles’ cinema in Leicester Square back in February, a campaign which has continued to grow and gain widespread support. On TV, James has appeared on  London Live  to promote his music and campaign, as well as performing for an  OK! Magazine  event. His next ambition is to plan a European Eco School tour and inspire more young people to take action and better not just the world we live in, but our own lives as well.

The Music Rooms open in SelbyIt’s been a long-held dream of music teacher Sarah Garrard to open a music centre in Selby and last month her hard work and determination paid off when The Music Rooms opened to the public.“Inspired by the passion I see in my students every day, I have wanted for a very long time to bring music to many more people,” said Sarah, “and at last I’ve got the perfect place.”Sarah found an old building at Cockrane’s Shipyard and together with her family she’s spend the last few months lovingly restoring the place, transforming it into a beautiful purpose-built music centre.“It’s been so exciting watching it develop from a run-down building to fully soundproofed music rooms and the response I have had already has been amazing. I have 13 teachers across all instruments who can’t wait to get going!”The Music Rooms offers tuition across all instruments, rehearsal space, instrument servicing and repairs, a shop for music accessories, a cafe and room hire.As well one-to-one lessons in all instruments and voice, there’ll be guitar and ukulele groups, adult and youth choirs, general ensembles, a jazz band and workshops on offer.Find out more: Tel:07976 250 785, [email protected] Cockrane’s Shipyard, Carr Street, Selby, YO8 8AW Or follow the Music Rooms at www.facebook.com/TheMusicRoomsSelby

‘Big Brother’ Advice to Prince GeorgeHRH Prince George has been given some top tips on becoming an ‘awesome’ big brother to his new baby sister by pupils at Harrogate independent prep school Belmont Grosvenor.Youngsters in Year 3 wrote letters to toddler Prince George, offering advice on how best to fill the role of big brother and the pupils were delighted when they all received personal letters back from the Royal household at Kensington Palace.Belmont Grosvenor School Year 3 class teachers Nicola Shillam and Anne Smith said all pupils had hand-written missives to Prince George as part of an English project on formal and informal letter writing. Each youngster in Year 3 offered the young Prince advice on how to be a good big brother – this ranged from teaching the newly-born Princess Charlotte how to share toys and brush her teeth, to teaching her good table manners, helping her with her times tables and teaching her how to play football and rugby.A couple of pupils at the school even suggested Prince George taught his baby sister how to sneak sweets upstairs to the bedroom – a suggestion Kensington Palace thought maybe wouldn’t be too popular unless the Royal children then brushed their teeth!Mrs Shillam said all the pupils had written individual letters to Prince George, putting their best hand-writing skills into action – and had been delighted when they had received individual letters back!“In these days of computers and emails, letter writing is still a very important skill and, as part of an English project at school, our Year 3 pupils had been studying both informal and formal letter writing.“When the post arrived with individual letters for each of the children who had written letters, they were delighted. To have a letter from the Royal household is something they will treasure for the rest of their lives,” added Mrs Smith.www.belmontgrosvenor.co.uk or call 01423 771029.

Avoid the summer learning slide The school holidays are almost here, and we’re sure learning will be the last thing on a child’s mind. However, research has revealed that two thirds of children fall behind in their studies over the holidays* meaning that when they finally go back to school, many children are lacking in confidence and unable to recall things they learnt in the previous school year.

Carey Ann Dodah, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning says: “It’s surprising how much children’s academic ability slips over the summer holidays and it seems such a waste of all the time and effort they have put in over the previous year. Of course, we’re not saying it should all be work, work, work – but just a couple of hours a week to keep you topped up can make the world of difference when September comes around.”

July is the most popular time of the year for families to join Explore Learning, as parents across the country look for an engaging way to keep their children’s brains active over the long summer break. Also, families joining in July will save £50 registration fee at participating centres**, so now is a great time to join if you haven’t already!

to make uniform last

TOP TIPS

Uniform-buying season is almost upon us, so how can you be sure you’re making wise choices? Carolyn Budding is a Director at YourSchoolUniform.com and has assembled 10 top tips for making the most of school clothes.

For more information visit www.yourschooluniform.com

Right first time: “Buying cheap can mean buying twice,” says Carolyn. “Work out which items you can afford to spend a bit more on and avoid paying again further down the road. One of the benefits of sourcing our own product is that we can offer quality garments at a range of prices year-round to help parents with differing budgets.”

Size it up: “Children’s growth can be steady over a period of weeks, or sometimes they seem to get taller overnight,” Carolyn explains. “It is a good idea to use a size guide rather than choose clothes by age. The age guides in some uniform items tend to be based on height alone, which doesn’t take into account children’s body shapes. Our handy online size guides allow parents to measure for height, waist, chest and collar sizes.”

Room to spare: “If you want to buy uniform which will last, make sure you leave some growing room,” says Carolyn. “Look out for trousers and skirts with adjustable waists and if you’re handy with a needle – or can use iron-on webbing - buy them too long so you can turn-up the hem and then let it down again as they grow.”

True colours: “If the school allows different colour options always go for the darker shade,” Carolyn warns. “Spills, stains and marks are much more visible on lighter coloured clothing.”

Cover-up: “One of the easiest and simplest tricks to help extend the life of school uniform is simply to cover it up,” suggests Carolyn. “Aprons, tabards and wipe-clean smocks are ideal for protecting clothes while children tackle practical lessons – we even offer a lab coat for youngsters to help make sure their uniform doesn’t suffer while they conduct experiments.”

All white: “To get rid of mud stains on white shirts and t-shirts, soak in a solution of water and bicarbonate of soda before washing,” says Carolyn. “And remember – the quicker a stain is dealt with, the easier it is to shift.”

Fade to black: “Turn dark coloured clothing inside out before washing and store away from direct sunlight to combat fading,” says Carolyn. “Darks are best washed in cold water and dried inside. Purple in particular reacts to UV light, so drying away from bright sunshine will keep the colour better for longer.”

Pen and ink: “Biro and ink stains are fairly common with schoolchildren,” adds Carolyn. “A handy trick is to soak a biro stain in milk before washing. Not many children use fountain pens any more, but ink stains can be removed by covering with hairspray and then blotting with a paper towel.”

Iron out: “Your iron can be a great tool in preserving the life of your children’s uniform,” says Carolyn. “Iron-on patches are an easy way to make small repairs, while special webbing can be used to shorten hems using your iron. Iron-in naming labels are a popular method of making sure every item has your child’s name on it.”

Keep it clean: “Easy-care fabrics and Teflon coatings are great for busy parents,” says Carolyn. “Teflon helps prevent stains while the easy-care fabrics tend to require less rigorous washing and ironing.”

Families Vale of York and Flutterbabies have teamed up to give one lucky baby/child, aged from 3 months to 2 and a half, a free term of swimming lessons at the Goosewood Holiday Park, Sutton on the Forest, worth £104.50. The place is for the September term only.Flutterbabies is a local company offering relaxed, nurturing swimming classes.  The courses encourage children and their carers to bond, socialise and spend fun and quality time together and their approach is unique.  All of the lessons follow a plan, but the fundamental ethos centres around the fact that all babies develop at their own pace and they adapt the lessons to ensure that they’re going at a pace that everyone feels happy and comfortable with.Charlotte who swims with her son Jacob says, “Jacob is just starting his third term of swimming with Flutterbabies and he enjoys every minute of his lessons! We have so much fun learning new techniques and songs and he is growing in confidence all the time. I would highly recommend swimming lessons with Flutterbabies for any one struggling with confidence in the water or just looking to do something different and have fun with their little one!”The 30-minute long sessions are designed for children aged 12 weeks to three years. Babies and toddlers will learn to get used to the water, before graduating to underwater swimming and fun and games to build water confidence. Flutterbabies is the only swimming school in the area that follows the Birthlight approach, in which classes are structured around the development of baby, adapting to a baby’s mood and encouraging bonding between the parent and child. It is also one of the few bronze certified STA Star Swim Schools in the region which means they have committed to provide excellent standards. For more information see www.flutterbabies.co.uk

The parties promise to bring a recording studio to your home and give guests the chance to make their own CD. With the date set, it was time to chose the songs Yorkshire’s newest girl band would record. Despite my best efforts to get a few Spice Girls classics on the playlist, Eliza opted for “All About the Bass” by Meghan Trainer and Maroon 5’s “Maps” but the options are literally endless.Rob from Recording 4 Fun then provides a themed invitation pack. Song sheets

and a CD personalised with the party tunes are sent to guests so they can practice in time for the big day. It’s a nice touch and adds to the excitement.

Party day arrived and half an hour before the party so does Rob and his mobile studio. Within minutes, microphones are set up, headphones are attached and there are gizmos and gadgets everywhere. My dining room was ready for the 15 girls about to arrive. Or Take That.

Rob split the 15 girls into 5 groups of 3, with the excited trios gathered round a microphone each. With headphones on, there were a few practice runs of Eliza’s chosen songs before the record button was pressed. While the group sang,

and danced, Rob was on hand to take pictures and even record a pop video.

“I feel like an actual pop star,” said Eliza as she cupped the

new headgear in place in between ‘takes’. “I

think this is what I will do when I’m older.”

The recordings are peppered with some fun. There’s a rendition of Happy Birthday for Eliza as well as some ad libbing at the beginning and end of the songs. For me, the success of a birthday party comes down to how much fun the birthday girl has. Eliza didn’t stop smiling from the moment she stood in front of her microphone, flanked by her two best friends. She loved being a star for the day and singing her favourite songs. When she, and her guests, received their personalised CDs at the end of the party, she was delighted.“I think we have made a brand new band Mummy,” Eliza said as the last guests waved goodbye.“I do too,” I replied, head in hands and with half an eye on a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc. “I would call yourselves ‘Girls Really Loud.’”

By Sarah Butters

Why do parents choose a childminder over, say a nursery or nanny? Looking for someone to care for your child is one of the biggest decisions that a parent has to make. It is important that parents are aware of the wide range of childcare settings available. No two settings are the same. Parents should have the opportunity to visit the childminder or setting, and have opportunity to talk about the needs they have for their family and children. As a parent I know that I want my children to be happy, safe and have time to grow and learn while developing their personalities and confidence. As a childminder I feel very privileged to be part of many children’s early years and witness them grow and develop into people with skills and confidence ready for their next stages of life –such as staring school.

What happens on a typical week with a childminder? As I answer this, I reflect upon my week – it was action packed and fun! The children helped to sew the seedlings into our allotment, spent time finding mini beasts and learning about the weather and how to tend our crops such as strawberries, beans, peas, carrots etc. All these will be harvested and eaten by the children who love to be part of the process. It also supports their knowledge of where food comes from and we know that it also helps them enjoy new tastes and textures. We sang lots of songs and rhymes; this week the favourite has been ‘5 little speckled frogs’ as the tadpoles in the garden are looking more like frogs. The children have made and painted frog masks and wore them as they hopped around the garden. We have been out to the woods to build dens and make woodland crafts - all the childminders at Sticky Fingers are forest school teachers. We have been to pre-school with the older children, getting them ready for starting school in September. We

have made lots of creations with construction toys, sand, dough, and craft materials.

Daily routines are very important helping the children to know what is coming next so we have fun at ‘snack times’ as the children help each other by pouring drinks and handing around the fruit or biscuits. We also enjoy lots of stories and cuddles. Sharing information with parents is an important part of our day too- we make written records and have good communication, which is key to knowing the children.

Are meals provided? Snacks are provided: one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon.

Lunch (mid-day) is fresh and nutritious consisting of two courses. Meals are planned considering the government’s recommendation of fruit and vegetables. We include the children’s home grown produce into our meals and the children often enjoy helping to prepare some of the snacks and meals.

Breakfast is available at parents’ request and for children needing tea (late afternoon) we ask parents to provide this.

Mealtimes are special they are a lovely opportunity to sit together and enjoy quality conversation.

Do childminders care for children of different ages and if so, are there any problems – or advantages to this? We care for children of all ages which provides a wonderful opportunity for all children to learn. It’s like having a large family; the older children like to help the younger ones and understand about being kind and gentle whilst the younger children love to watch and learn from the older ones. The children mix together and

they are able to be with their friends or siblings as the spaces that we provide ensure that the children are safe.

How many children can a childminder look after and how can I be sure my child is receiving enough attention? A childminder can look after 3 children under school age at any one time, and can care for additional older children; for example after school or in the holidays. A combination of three adults childminders/ assistants can work together at any one time enabling there to be a total of nine children under school age. We aim that every child receives detailed attention to meet their needs.

Do many people place siblings with a childminder? Yes we do care for many siblings, we feel very privileged to become such a big part of families’ lives and it is very special. Often a child will start with us as a baby and stay with us until they start school.

Do childminders have to have qualifications? Childminders do have to have specific training. I would personally recommend that people who work with children are highly trained and supported by other professionals to ensure that the quality of care they provide is high quality. Mentoring and supporting other professionals/ child carers is an element of my work that I can provide.

Do Ofsted inspect Childminders? In the past year there have been changes to policy that have impacted the answer to this question. Ofsted are the main regulators that go out and inspect childminders however childminders can choose, if they wish, to be part of an agency, they would inspect the childminder and Ofsted inspect the agent.

How do I know a childminder’s house is safe? It is important that parents go and visit settings and childminders before they leave their child. As part of this visit I would highly recommend that safety is something parents consider. From personal experience I can reassure parents that risk assessments on my home/ setting are regularly undertaken, as are fire drills and evacuation procedures.

Do childminders accept nursery grants or childcare vouchers? We accept childcare vouchers and are able to care for children aged 2, 3 and 4 years old who are eligible for government funding (nursery grants). If a parent is looking for child care they should talk to the provider about this prior to booking in their child.

How do prices compare with other forms of childcare? We all keep hearing via the media that the government aims to make the cost of childcare more affordable. I would say that it is the quality of childcare that is important, and from my experience the cost reflects this. As the government invests into the early years sector then the training and quality of the staff will increase. Childcare is one of the lowest paid jobs but in my opinion one of the most important.

What if my child is ill? If children are unwell than it is best for them and the other children if they stay at home. We all know that children have regular coughs and colds, which is actually helping them build an immune system, so therefore they should not be off at the first sign of a sniff or cough, however if children have something infectious such as sickness and/or diarrhoea they must keep away until they are better (48 hours clear). If there is any doubt in relation to symptoms then it is advisable for parents to seek medical advice. Good hygiene is very important in reducing the spread of infections especially where there are lots of little fingers.

What if the childminder is ill or on holiday? We are a team at Sticky Fingers Childminding Ltd and are able to cover each other if illness occurs. I am sure other childminders have systems in place to provide consistency; parents should check this out prior to booking a place at any setting. In relation to holidays, we need to have a break just as anyone else would, so parents are given a list of holiday dates in advance of the year. Often parents take this time as holiday or ask a relative to help. This arrangement works well at our setting.

Paula Baker established ‘Sticky Fingers Childminding’ in Gate Helmsley over 11 years ago, and prior to that worked in day nurseries. She is qualified to care for children with additional needs and in September 2013 became an Early Years Teacher through gaining Early Years Professional Status (EYPS). In 2015 Paula was awarded ‘First Class’ BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies and in her last three inspections OFSTED graded her as providing ‘Outstanding’ care and education for all children. Paula has a fantastic team which works very closely together caring for up to nine children under school age. Each child receives lots of care and detailed attention to suit their individual needs and they are also able to develop socially and make friends with other children.

Your mouth during pregnancy and care of your baby’s teeth

Pregnancy is an exciting time, and also one when women need to pay special attention to their health. Jonathan Pimley explains why …Pregnant women are more at risk of gum disease due to increased levels of progesterone during pregnancy. This makes their gums react more to the normal bacteria, (plaque) that form in our mouths every day, which causes inflamed and bleeding gums, (gingivitis), even if they follow their normal cleaning routine. To minimise the collection of plaque you should already be seeing a hygienist regularly and ideally an oral health educator to make sure you are using the most effective cleaning techniques, tailored to your mouth. This is important because it is thought that there may be a link between good gum health and better birth outcomes: for example, low birth weight and premature birth can be less likely. If you have morning sickness you may want to eat ‘little and often’. If you are frequently sick, rinse your mouth afterwards with plain water to prevent the stomach acids attacking the teeth. Try to avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks in your ‘little

and often’ which will help protect your teeth against decay as well as further acid erosion.Eating a balanced diet during pregnancy will help promote dental health and overall health for you and your baby. A baby’s teeth begin to develop between three and six months into pregnancy, so be sure that you are getting the right amount of calcium, vitamins D, C and A, phosphorous, and protein. However, it is not true that a pregnant woman will lose calcium from her teeth during pregnancy. In fact, any calcium loss due to inadequate dietary calcium will occur in the bones, not the teeth. If you include plenty of calcium-rich foods in your diet during pregnancy, your bones and teeth—and your baby’s bones and teeth—should be strong and healthy.Your baby will usually start teething at around six months old and will continue periodically until all twenty baby teeth come through at around two and a half to three years old. At around six years old, the adult teeth will begin to appear. This will continue until all the adult teeth, except the wisdom teeth, have come through at around twelve to fourteen years old.

Babies are obviously not able to clean their own teeth, and children will need help to make sure that they clean them properly until they are about seven to ten years old. As soon as teething has started you should start cleaning your child’s teeth.Use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste and gently massage it around the teeth and gums with the brush. As your child gets older you can gradually give your child more responsibility for cleaning their teeth. It is important to clean teeth last thing at night and also in the morning, with a fluoride toothpaste. Get your dental team’s advice on the right products to use and how to brush. If your baby needs a dummy, soother or pacifier, there are ‘orthodontic’ ones that reduce the risk of affecting the growth of teeth and jaws. So if your baby does want to use a dummy, make sure you choose an orthodontic one.Never dip your baby’s dummy, soother, pacifier or teething ring into fruit syrups, honey, fruit juices or anything containing sugars, particularly at bedtime. The harmful sugars and acids attack your baby’s

newly formed teeth and will cause decay. It is best to start taking your baby with you to your dental check-ups so that they recognise it as a normal thing to do – familiarising themselves with the sights and sounds in the dental Practice. At Clover House we always allow this familiarisation to take place before attempting any checking of teeth – and even then this might only involve chatting to them while they sit on Mum or Dad’s knee. There is no reason for any child to develop a fear of dentists these days, as long as these early steps are handled sympathetically.Your baby has every chance of never needing a filling if you establish the right habits from the start, so those precious smiles will always be perfect.

Avoidance Avoidance is always sensible so here are some tips to reduce allergens in the home:•    Dust with a damp cloth and

make sure you get to all those easily forgotten places like the tops of picture frames and door frames.

•    Vacuum as often as possible – daily is ideal.  When vacuuming, remember to vacuum furniture every week – twice a week is better. Vacuum under beds daily, and try not to keep lots of things under beds as these will collect lots of house dust mite allergens. And vacuum mattresses and pillows regularly.

•    Use an allergen barrier mattress cover on beds, pillows and duvets.

•    Put bedding, duvets and soft toys into a plastic bag and put them in the freezer for 24 hours and/or wash bedding and duvets above 55°C.

For more information on managing indoor allergies, have a look at the managing allergies section at http://haymax.biz

HayFever in Children

About Max: Max Wiseberg is an expert in airborne allergies (including hayfever and dust and pet allergies). He regularly writes in the press, for publications including The Sunday Mirror, Running Fitness, Health Food Business, The Practicing Midwife, Pharmacy magazines and Your Healthy Living and has appeared on BBC radio, many local radio stations, as well as Fitness TV and the Holiday & Cruise channel.

There are no cures for hay fever but avoidance of the allergen is the best possible strategy – when it is practical.  Over the counter remedies, none of which are suitable for babies of less than one year old, are usually based around anti-histamines (steroid nasal sprays are not recommended for under 18’s). Increasing numbers of parents want to avoid pharmaceutical remedies if possible and there are more and more drug-free alternatives available. So here are some ideas for prevention, which can be used as an alternative or as a complement to anti-histamines.

Alternatives•   Apply HayMax organic allergen barrier

balms to the bottom of the nose, to trap the allergens before they get in. 8 out of ten in a recent Allergy UK study said it helped with all or some of their symptoms -  it really does work.

•   Use a drug-free nasal spray to protect the inside of the nose.  Prevalin is a wet spray and Care Allergy Defence is a dry powder. Both are supported by real evidence.

•    Supporting the immune system by using Bee Prepared Immune Support Daily Defence containing therapeutic doses of propolis, elderberry, and other antibacterial and antifungal ingredients such as olive leaf and beta glucans.

The incidence of hay fever in

young children is a real problem for

increasing numbers of people. The symptoms are

similar to those of a cold or a virus, but

if the symptoms continue for several

weeks and there is no fever, then it is

almost certainly hay fever. The symptoms vary

and may include any number or

combination of the following:

Sneezing

Runny nose

Itchy, sore or red eyes

Watering eyes

Itchy ears

Itchy throat

Itchy roof of mouth

York Theatre Royal at The NRM THE RAILWAY CHILDREN31 July – 5 September Two of York’s iconic establishments have joined forces this summer to offer families a day-out with a difference. York Theatre Royal’s Olivier Award-winning production of The Railway Children sets off at the National Railway Museum this July after sell-out runs in London Waterloo, Toronto and London Kings Cross. The show which features the steam loco-motive from the original film, tells the story of how the comfortable lives of three Edwardian children, Bobby, Peter and Phyllis are shattered when their father is arrested on suspicion of betraying state secrets. The children and their mother move from London to a modest cottage near a railway in the Yorkshire countryside. New friendships, adventures and terrifying dangers await. If you didn’t catch this amazing production last time it came to the NRM, be sure to book tickets this summer. It promises to be a real treat for the whole family. www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

Because everything changes when we read. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday. There is a different theme each year. Children can read whatever they like - fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library.Every time children finish a book they get stickers and rewards and there’s a certificate for everyone who finishes. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all school children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part, and most libraries run Summer Reading Challenge linked early years activity for pre-schoolers.Every year there is a new theme and this year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with Guinness World Records - the global authority in record-breaking achievements and publisher of the annual Guinness World Records ™book – to establish a “Record Breakers” themed Challenge. Record Breakers brings together fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore astonishing real-life achievements and world records. Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover the weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic, People Power and Action! Adventure!Visit your local library or www.readingagency.org.uk/summerreadingchallenge for more information.
