The first workshop of the season kicks off with experiments in staining, spinning, and collaging to make abstract masterpieces. 8 | Public Monument Philadelphia is a city of public art and monuments. Join us on Lenfest plaza to create a huge collaborative chalk drawing that leaves your mark on the city. 15 | Roll with It Printmaking knows no boundaries. Create an all in one ball that acts as a brayer, press, and mark maker. 22 | Operation After tracing a life-size version of the human body, use silhouettes, templates, and mixed media to flesh out your piece with organs, muscles, and a skeleton and transform it into a real-life operation game. 29 | I-Zombie Learn face-painting techniques from a trained Hollywood makeup artist and transform yourself into the creature of your dreams. Then make a painted self-portrait of your spooky-self. NOVEMBER 5 | Your Voice. Our Country. All Weekend. Meet artist Amos Paul Kennedy, Junior as part of PAFA’s weekend-long celebra- tion of art and politics to make original, take-home prints that share their voices with the wider community. 12 | Paper Weaving Inspired by Chuck Close Photographs, create a woven-paper portrait collage to take home. 19 | Spirit Animal Decide which animal you most identify with from within PAFA’s collection and practice drawing and watercolor tech- niques to create a portrait of your unique spirit animal. 26 | Thanksgiving Weekend – No Workshop DECEMBER 3 | Triptychs Learn to tell a story in three parts. Create your own 3-D painting to take home. 10 | Finger Printing Instead of paint brushes and pencils – you can use your fingers! Art Explorers (Junior Drawing Badge) | 11 a.m. – 1 p.m After spending time in PAFA’s galleries learning to interpret art, scouts will build their own observational drawing skills by learning about key principles of composition and using objects from the permanent collection to practice drawing from the masters.

Art Explorers (Senior Collage Badge) | 2 – 4 p.m. After studying art made by women artists, scouts will share their own artistic message through the creative process of collage. Using found materials and the power of text and imagery, each will design a composition that explores her own personal journey.

Digital Photography | 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.Taking inspiration from the Chuck Close Photographs exhibition, this class offers an introduction to digital photography by starting with basic lessons in camera usage (lens, light, depth of field) then examines composition, portraiture, landscape, and photo essay. Time will be spent editing in the school’s digital lab as well as short supervised field trips. Please bring a digital camera with lens.

Drawing for Comics | 2 – 4 p.m.This course looks at the tools, materials, and techniques to get you started in the comic arts. Learn about figure proportion, character creation, perspective, facial expressions and clothing. Work with other young artists to storyboard a collaborative adventure. There will also be a supervised field trip to look at special collections. All materials provided.

GIRL SCOUT WORKSHOPSOctober 14Historic Landmark Building$10 per Girl Scout/ Parents and Guardians FreeJoin art educators at PAFA for an interactive guided tour that explores how women have taught and exhibited at PAFA for over 200 years, particularly focusing on ways they have represented family, selfhood, and social activism. Art activities after the tour will complete the badge requirements.
