GrAND kNiGht’s messAGeJuly 2010 marks the first time since 1990 that July 4th falls on a Sunday, therefore

our installation of officers will take place on July 8th at 7:30PM in lieu of our Officers and Chairman meeting. Our traditional 4th of July picnic will continue as planned, and I look forward to seeing you all celebrating our country’s Independence Day.

At this time I would like to thank our outgoing Grand Knight, Bob Dannemiller for his outstanding leadership and continued service as District Deputy for the fraternal year 2010/2011. I will look to him and all my fellow officers for guidance and continued sup-port for a successful upcoming term. As your Grand Knight my hope is to continue the growth and betterment of our council and our community by unifying our efforts with our parishes; St. James, St. Agnes, St. Ann, and St. Charles. Please join me in this effort.

Summer is upon us and we would like to extend an invitation to brother Knights to join us for our Wednesday get-togethers. You don’t have to be retired, if you are, fine, but come up and see what we do and join us in a libation and an inexpensive

lunch.

I would like to thank all the pool members and snack bar patrons for an outstanding and history making Memorial Day weekend in 2010. I also want to thank all of my employees that made Memo-rial Day Weekend a record breaking Holiday Weekend. In my 11 years of managing this facility, it was the biggest weekend ever, surpassing the 2009 weekend by over 40%. Again thanks to all who contributed!

BlooD BANk NeWsOur next Blood Drive, in cooperation

with INOVA will be on the 3rd Sunday of August, the 15th. In this drive we have a partner, the Cathedral Knight’s Council will co-host it and we hope this will increase the donors. We hope to see our regulars and many new donors.

eDitor’s NoteI would like to thank PGK FDD Rick Vranesh for his help

in getting the June Knight Life ready for print. I was leaving on vacation and Rick stepped up to put the finishing touches on the edition. Please note that any errors or omissions noted are my responsibility. Rick could only play the cards I left behind.

On an unrelated note I would like to remind my brother knights that the red recycle bin in the lower parking lot is for newspapers and related materials only. It is not for aluminum, glass, plastic or similar recyclables. It is also definitely not for household trash. Usually the bin has pasted on its side a list of acceptable items although the one I used on June 13 did not.

kNiGht oF the moNthJohn Walls is our July Knight of the Month. John had been an

active knight at E.D.W. for many years. He had been our Trusty Warden and taught numerous guards their responsibilities. John frequently attended our many events throughout the year. You have seen him enjoying a family breakfast or a Friday night fish fry at the Council Home. Additionally, John was an usher at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for many years. Thank you John for all you did for E.D.W.

Please join me in bidding farewell to John Walls, the July Knight of the Month. Our prayers are with him and his family.

FAmily oF the moNthThe Bob Lillis family is our July Family of the Month. Bob,

Allison, and Nicholas have been enjoying E.D.W. for many years. Bob has been taking care of the grounds of E.D.W. for quite some time. With all the mowing, raking, mulching, and trimming the shrubs, Bob has been busy. Allison and Nicholas have a more leisurely time at E.D.W. enjoying the pools. The entire family attends events at E.D.W. enjoys our Club’s many family events and activities. Thank you Bob and the entire Lillis family on all you have done, and your continued dedication to E.D.W. Please join me in congratulating the entire Lillis family for being the July Family of the Month.

mANAGer’s corNerSummer is finally here and long gone are the snows and cold

weather. Our kick off to summer, Memorial Day, was a huge suc-cess. The grounds were filled with families enjoying the day. The newly white coated pools were used all day and no band aids!!! I want to thank all those who came out, and all the volunteers, especially the “Pit Crews” whose hard work and team spirit made it a special day. I am hoping that on Sunday July 4th the picnic will be the same success.

When you get a chance please go by the Charles Paradise Lounge. The new ceiling is in and looks terrific. We are half way through the renovations downstairs and hope to have them completed by the end of July

I would like to take a minute to thank you all in advance for remembering to not use glass bottles and cans in the picnic area. And please dispose of your hot coals properly. Someone dropped them into a trash can and oops, they melt plastic... If you have hot coals bring them over to the Pit and throw them in under the grates if they are still hot.

One last thing, please feel free to contact me with any issues or comments, especially any safety hazards you may observe. My email is [email protected].

Thanks again for all you do, and have a great summer…Jesse

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who helped make the Jim Savarese Memorial Golf Tournament such a success. The generous support of our corporate sponsors and friends who sponsored memorial signs greatly helped us defray costs. A special thanks to John Nugent and Sons and my husband, James, for their sponsor-ship of the luncheon. Thanks to Meredith for all the work on the signs; and to Al Camacho and James for coming out early to set up the corporate and memorial signs on the golf tees. The weather was great and I’ve heard many positive comments from participants.

Here is a list of our very generous sponsors. As you will see by the names, our sponsors are very important (and giving) members of our Knights community. Please remember them when you are looking for services.

Again, thank you all for your generous support. Stay tuned for details for next year’s event.

Ladies U-Knighted will again be selling bake goods and 50/50 tickets during the 4th of July picnic, so stop by our booth for some sweets and a chance to win some “dough.”

Finally, I’d like to thanks my fellow Ladies U-Knighted members for their support during my tenure as President. Congratulations to our new President, Jo Wood, and her newly elected board. Please stay tuned for some exciting upcoming events.

And last but not least, attention all gardeners. If you’re looking for ways to show your creative side, we are looking for volunteers. Our friend Cheryl Lusche has donated many years of her time cultivating plants and trees behind the pool bar (check it out if you have a chance). When these plants mature, they are planted around the Kof C grounds. Cheryl is looking for volunteers to help with this effort. If you are interested, you can contact Cheryl directly.

Thanks again for all of your support.

Congratulations To the slate of officers elected to serve the EDW membership

during the fraternal year running July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2011. Further, I would like to congratulate Past Grand Knight Bob Dannemiller, who will serve as our District Deputy during this Fraternal Year. This reflects very well on EDW, as this is the second year in a row that EDW has been asked to serve in a state position. I am looking forward to working with you over the next year!

Special ThanksI would like to say thank you to outgoing Grand Knight Bob

Dannemiller. It has been an absolute pleasure to have worked with you over the past two years. You are one of the best!

EDW, We Have a Budget Attached to this month’s Knight Life you will find a proposed

budget that the other officers and I put together for the upcoming fraternal year. Though it contains the “standard stuff,” it does contain two particular items that you should be aware of. The first is a $15,000 disbursement from the Building Fund. Rather than pass a special resolution to help fund the renovation of the Lower Lounge, we included it in the budget. Currently, there is $22,091.00 in the Building Fund account and all officers are in favor of this disbursement. The second item is that we will impose a surcharge of $6.00 on each member’s dues to offset the surcharge that has been imposed on the Council to support Supreme’s Culture of Life Fund.

Account BalancesEach meeting our Treasurer reports the aggregate total of our

funds held in the bank. Most members do not realize that approxi-mately half of those funds are “dedicated” or belong to one of the groups at EDW. Right now, the Council is holding $22,091.00 for the Building Fund; $5,881.10 for the Waiters; and $17,368.75 in dues collected on behalf of the Columbus Club. Roughly speaking, about $45,000 of our “robust balances” belong somewhere else! We’re not rich, but we are comfortable…

Dues Notices The Third Quarter dues notices were mailed around July 1.

Hopefully, you have seen them if you have an outstanding balance. Sometimes, presorted mail takes a bit longer than First Class mail, so if you don’t receive your notice by the end of the month, please telephone me and leave a message so that we can keep you cur-rent. I now have the ability to access the EDW computer from my home, so I should be able to answer your questions very quickly.

When the concept of the Capital Campaign Fund (CCF) was founded back in 2005, we were asking one thing and one thing only:

“We were asking members to buy into our vision, not just our immediate goals. We were asking members to make multi-year commitments to our cause and that required a special level of commitment”

Things that we know:• People are inundated with emotional appeals and are not

generally moved to make major gifts• The realization of these dreams has served as the motivation

for making the campaign a success.• Our Faith ~ Our Legacy was a catalyst to motivate people

to take on the projects as well as helping our Council with its endeavors

• We have been very blessed - Members, their families, and friends see first-hand how we benefited when they see the inside of the Council Home and the Main Hall, when they swim in the pool and use all the other facilities on this 10 acre estate

What have we done to date?We have completed over 35 projects to date and we have invested

well over $580,000 back into our Campus. With the last project under way and when completed this year that number will rise to about $663,000!

So what is our next goal?• We want to pay off our note as fast as possible. Currently it

is a 5 year note; however we want to pay it off faster. Can we raise another $100,000 to accomplish this goal? I think we can.

• “Ask, and it will be given you; Seek, and you will find; Knock, and it will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

• “For it is in giving that we receive” St. Francis of Assisi Jim Savarese, Founder and Chairman of the CCF, who passed

away in 2009, would be very proud if we could finish what he started. As we all know, Jim was a very passionate guy and was very passionate about making the CCF a success. And he did just that!

Let’s finish what Jim started. Let’s raise the last $100,000.Please be on the look out for information coming in the mail. Thanks to all who have given.

GreAt FooD At the couNcil home!!!!!!!

Oftentimes members or friends ask “Is there any food served in the Council Home?” The answer is –YES, YES, YES!! And the front two rooms are SMOKE FREE!

Tuesday is Burger Night where you get a meatloaf on a bun. Just kidding, however the burgers are huge and they are 100% fresh ground beef. You can choose off the menu to have it cooked 7 different ways and there is fixing bar too. Fries or onion rings are included too.

Wednesday is Taco Night and it is all homemade and cooked to order.

Thursday is Spaghetti Night with fresh made sauce, pasta cooked to your liking with garlic bread and a salad included. How big is the serving? – Brother, it is served family style, I mean large plates with the red and white checkered place mats and bowls.

Friday? - It is always a special. It could be a fish fry, crab legs, crab cakes, spiced shrimp and these are large portions. Bring up a group of 20, call ahead to get it set up, and then you have your own private room and dinner served to you! Your friends will love you.

Saturday is Steak Night. It is the one and only! A 14 ounce fresh steak cooked to order with a baked potato, fresh greens, and a salad included. The price – priceless –

Also on Saturday all day – Scotty’s Subs, it does not get any better. Fresh sub rolls and all fresh meats, tomatoes, and let-tuce. Why stand in line at the Italian Store – come and set in the Council Home.

Do not forget our regular menu available all the time. Here are some:

From knee pad burgers (sliders), cheese steak subs, chicken wings made to order from mild to double flush, and 10 other great items to select from.

Come and enjoy great inexpensive food and great friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
