The Battle of Bentonville, fought March 19-21, 1865, was the last full-scale action of theCivil War in which a Confederate army was ableto mount a tactical offensive. This major battle,the largest ever fought in North Carolina, wasthe only significant attempt to defeat the largeUnion army of Gen. William T. Sherman duringits march through the Carolinas in the spring of1865. Visitors will enjoy the museum, theHarper House, and the home of John and AmyHarper, which became a field hospital for theUnion Army. There are Union earthworks andtrails and a Confederate cemetery.
