Success starts at nursery school

If you’ve ever wondered how you can give your child the best possible start in life, the answer may not be private tuition, the best technology or even extra-curricular activities, but helping them learn ‘soft skills’ like sharing and being kind to others, according to a new study from the USA.

Children who demonstrate good social skills at nursery-school age go on to be more successful in life, say researchers from Pennsylvania state university.

In a study spanning an impressive 20 years, nursery school teachers were surveyed about the ‘social competence’ of 700 of their students. They were asked to rate children on criteria such as “is helpful to others”, “shares materials” and “resolves peer problems on their own”.

Once the nursery school pupils reached their 20s, researchers followed up to see how the students were faring, both in their personal life and in terms of education and work. They found that the students who had demonstrated good social skills at an early age were more likely to have graduated college, to be gainfully employed and to not have been arrested than students with lesser social skills.

Discussing the study, Damon Jones, senior research associate, said: ““This research by itself doesn’t prove that higher social competence can lead to better outcomes later on. But when combined with other research, it is clear that helping children develop these skills increases their chances of success in school, work and life.”

take your turn when playing or in conversation.

Five minutes with Jenni Jones of Yoga, Bumps and Babies…Why is yoga so benefi cial to mums-to-be? Yoga is a real gift to pregnant women. It can help them cope with the transformations - physical and emotional - that happen in pregnancy.

It can be used for Improving posture and stretching the muscles that need to lengthen as baby grows whilst also stabilising the muscles in the pelvis to avoid unnecessary aches and pains that many think are a normal part of pregnancy. They don’t have to be!

And what about after the birth?Postnatal yoga is all about healing after pregnancy and birth. If pregnancy yoga is about opening and making space, postnatal yoga is about closing strengthening and stabilizing. These days, places in the best schools are more hotly contested than Glastonbury tickets, with strategic house moves and atheists dutifully turning out to church every Sunday not unheard of as parents jostle to get their little ones into their school of choice.

But if you’re baffled about what you need to do in order to get your child into a gold star school, fear not, here are our top tips for making the grade:

Be prepared Unless you want to give yourself a coronary, don’t try to sort your child’s school place at the last minute. Applications will usually be made in the academic year in which your child turns four. The deadline for primary school applications in Liverpool is 15th January 2016.

Do your researchAs with most things in life, plan ahead. Research what schools are available in your local area and what the pros and cons of each are. Information about the performance of schools is freely available on the Ofsted website, and most schools will also have open days that will enable you to get a feel for the school’s culture.

Check out the criteriaOnce you’ve found a school (or schools) that you’d be happy for your child to go to, you need to check whether you fit those all-important criteria. Usually this will include: whether you fit into the school’s geographic catchment area; whether you have another child who is already at the school; whether you, or your child has disability that would make travelling to a more distant school problematic and whether your family follows a particular religion (in the case of faith schools).

Make your application Once you have selected three schools you would like to apply for, you can make your application via your local authority website. In the case of specialist schools (e.g. faith schools), you may need to send supplementary forms directly to the school, such as a letter from your local priest to prove that you are a practicing Catholic.

Then, it’s a matter of sitting back and waiting to hear whether you have been granted a place at the school of your choice. If you haven’t been successful, you can appeal. Visit your local authority website for more information.

Making over our schools

While the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ programme may be a distant memory, the need for well-designed schools fit for the next generation of students is not.

A recent survey by Key, an organisation that supports senior leadership in schools, found that more than a third of heads felt that their schools weren’t fit for purpose.

The survey showed that six in 10 of those surveyed would like to improve or repair their buildings, while almost half would like to build extra classrooms in their school.

The way in which a good school environment can improve learning is well recognised, with new-build schools frequently making the shortlist for the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA) Stirling Prize. Yet far too many schools in Britain are still failing to make the grade.

However, one school leading the way in best practice is Archbishop Blanch School, in South Liverpool. In September 2015, it moves into a new £16 million purpose-built school building on Earle Road in Wavertree, which will include a theatre, recording and dance studios and state of the arts sports facilities.

Discussing the impact the new building will have on students, Heather Duggan, headteacher at Archbishop Blanch, said: “Now, more than ever, schools are not just simply buildings to house lessons in but can really inspire and aid students’ learning. In my experience building which are fit for purpose, accessible to all and built to last can motivate students and lift the spirits and aspirations of everyone who uses them.

“Much of the new building will be open plan, for example classrooms will be bright and airy and our assembly area - the centrepiece of the school – will be used to bring the whole school together for different events, such as the collective worship.”

The perfect packed lunchLittle ones might enjoy choosing a new lunchbox for September, but parents are more likely to be concerned about what goes in it.

While kids might be clamouring for e-number laden, nutrient-free snacks, mums and dads need to think about how to keep their little ones full of energy till home time.

We spoke to Shona Wilkinson, Head Nutritionist at NutriCentre, one of the World’s largest nutritional product suppliers, who explained that plenty of variety is key to ensuring your child’s lunch box is as healthy as it can possibly be.

“It is all too easy to get into the mindset of a lunchbox consisting of a sandwich, a drink, a packet of crisps and a chocolate bar, she said. “Many lunchboxes are also the same foods every single day. Start as you mean to go on before the child gets into the habit of having the same thing in their lunchbox every day and then starts demanding it. Vary it as much as possible. Even having a pitta bread rather than a sandwich can vary their diet.”

“The key is variety. If your child eats a varied diet, they tend to be much less fussy. Have plenty of colour in the lunchbox which will offer a wide range of nutrients.”

Shona’s Top 3 nutritious lunch favourites:

Healthy Fruit Yoghurts Shona recommends making your own healthy yoghurt by stirring in home-made fresh fruit puree into yoghurt into natural yoghurt. To make the puree, peel and chop fruit such as apples and pears, add to a sauce pan with a couple of table spoons of water and simmer until the fruit is soft. Puree in a blender until you reach a smooth consistency.

Raw vegetable sticks and dips It doesn’t get much simpler than this. Simply chop up carrots, red or yellow peppers, celery or cucumber and serve with hummus, sour cream and chives or salsa.

Home-made kale chipsKale is the superfood de jour at the moment, full of vitamins A, C, K and fibre. And transforming them into chip form is an excellent way to sneak more green goodness into your child’s diet. To make your own, simply bake kale leaves in an oven at 200°C for 10-15 minutes, leave to cool and serve.

And providing a good diet is one of the most important things you can do to help with your child’s development, explains Shona. “Your child’s body needs nutrients to perform every single function. By providing a healthy and nutrient dense breakfast and lunch you will help them have all the nutrients they need to get them through the day.”

Dance and drama

While the old Noël Coward standard may have implored Mrs Worthington not to put her daughter on the stage, actually the benefits of attending dance and drama lessons are numerous, even if a career treading the boards is unlikely to beckon. We take a look at the benefits:

Building confidencePublic speaking, or even just making your voice heard during a meeting can be nerve-wracking, but probably less so if you’ve spent much of your childhood singing, dancing or acting in front of an audience. Attending dance or drama lessons is a great way to help your child build the confidence they need later on in life.

DisciplineIf at first you don’t succeed, then try, try again. Whether it’s taking a part in a play or performing a dance routine - kids will rarely get it right first time. Attending performing arts lessons will teach them the importance of perseverance, and how practice makes perfect.

Building physical skills Though the physical benefits of attending, say, a dance class are obvious - many different kinds of performing arts activity can help your child develop. For example, posture is incredibly important in singing and drama lessons will help little ones understand how others interpret their physical behaviour.

Calling all little lionesses…

Women’s football was in the spotlight like never before this summer, as the England Lionesses reached third place in FIFA’s Women’s World Cup, beating arch-rivals Germany. Although women’s football has long been overlooked by both the media and the public, it is hoped that the women’s team’s recent success might inspire the next generation of female footballers.

And there are plenty of places for girls to get involved with the beautiful game on Merseyside. The FA has more than 170 female grassroots football teams across the area, who have teams ranging from U7s through to Adult Female, playing 5v5 to 11v11 at various indoor or outdoor football facilities.

Liverpool County FA has also just completed the Merseyside Game Changer which included a complete review of female football in the area including school, grassroots, recreational football and the Female Talent Pathway.

The overall findings from the Game Changer highlighted that females want to be treated the same as their male counterparts and be given the same opportunities to play football, access to better playing and training facilities and increase promotion/media coverage of the female game to help change perceptions and increase participation rates in Merseyside.

And there’s no shortage of role models in the sport: Four local women who took part in the Women’s World Cup in Canada - Fara Williams, Toni Duggan, Alex Greenwood and Jodie Taylor, all of whom began their playing career in local grassroots football clubs and Liverpool County FA before turning professional by playing for the female teams at Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City and Nottingham County.

Discussing female football on Merseyside, Anna Farrell, Football Development Officer for Liverpool County FA, said: “Female Football is the fastest growing format of football in Merseyside and the achievements of the Lionesses in Canada are only going to increase awareness and help us change perception of the game locally and nationally. Boys have always had the opportunity to become professional footballers and receive a wage for doing what they love and what they are good at, female footballers now have this opportunity with players being paid a full time wage to play in the FA Women’s Super League.

“Boys have always had local role models to look up to like Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and now our female footballers have local female role models like Toni Duggan, Fara Williams and Michelle Hinnigan and this is fantastic. As well as professional opportunities for female footballers, we have so many more female clubs, teams, leagues, sessions and programmes catering for all ages and abilities, and we have many more developments coming over the next four years.”

After hearing some great reviews about

Portland St 358 on Smithdown Road, we just

had to head along and try it out ourselves!

After being greeted by the friendly staff, my

friends and I were seated at our table. Inside,

the building has really cool urban décor.

The menu consists of a range of bites, fries,

burgers, mains and sides, and the idea is

that you choose a selection to create the

perfect feast.

One of my friends has to eat gluten free but

the menu has everything pointed out with

an easy key system, and the staff were very

helpful in accommodating.

I chose the Holy Mole burger, which was

made up of two patties, beef chilli mole, garlic

cream, guacamole & crisp tortilla strips, along

with rock salt and pepper fries. Be aware, it

can get a little messy!

One of my friends chose a similar burger,

while the others opted for a slow cooked beef

curry and garlic pepper prawns, which were

super hot but really tasty.

The Oreo Sundae is a chocolate lovers’

dream: Oreo ice cream, chocolate sauce &

oreo biscuits. If you’ve got enough room,

you may be able to finish it yourself, but we’d

recommend sharing one between two – the

kids would love it!

Other desserts on the menu include the

childhood favourite bubblegum ‘screwball’

and a doughnut sandwich! Yum!

Builder-turned-baker-extraordinaire Richard Burr was one of the most popular contestants on last year’s The Great British Bake-off. Here, he tells us about his new book, loving taking to the stage at food festivals and why he can no longer get away with not providing goodies for bake sales at his daughter’s school…

So, Richard. What can we expect from your new book BIY?I wanted to create a recipe book that anyone could pick up no matter what their skill level so every chapter has bakes graded from levels 1 (easy) to level 3 (advanced) so you can work your way through the book as you grow in confidence. I really like experimenting with different recipes once I’ve mastered a particular bake so on every recipe I’ve suggested extras for how to take it further and adapt it.

What was your experience taking part in GBBO?I was lucky enough to have a pretty happy life to start with but such an intense and fun experience it has really enhanced. No one ever comes up to you in the street and says “I hated you on the Bake Off”. It’s such a warm and well-loved programme that it’s been great to be part of that family.

How are you enjoying this year’s Bake Off?It’s a bit weird seeing people mucking about in “my” tent but it’s always a pleasure to see what they come up with and how they cope with each week’s challenges. I’ve enjoyed thinking what I would have made for each challenge. Much easier from the comfort of my sofa!

Why do you think home baking is experiencing such a resurgence?I feel people are more acutely aware of what goes into their food and the best way to know this is to bake it yourself. It’s such a comforting experience. For me, it’s something I do together with my family and has family traditions attached to it, like baking for birthdays, Halloween, Christmas etc. It’s one of my favourite ways to relax and spend time being creative with my kids.

How are you enjoying your new found fame?I’m not really famous! Life isn’t very different but things like food festivals are a great experience and now I’ve been “outed” as a baker I don’t get out of any bake sales at my daughter’s school.

What’s your go-to bake?Doughnuts. My rhubarb and custard ones are still my most requested bake and I’ve never made a batch that have survived long enough to go cold.

Calling all foodies - The Liverpool Food and Drink Festival is back in town.

Set to excite epicures everywhere, the event will take place in Sefton Park on the 19 and 20 September 2015.

Now in its eighth year, the two-day event will feature more than 100+ of Liverpool’s top restaurants and bars, celebrity chefs, expert demos and live entertainment, as well as dedicated areas concentrating on beer & bangers, healthy eating, booze from north of the border and much more.

Velocity Trampoline Park is an indoor

trampoline park located in Widnes,

Merseyside. The venue opened in July

2015, covering 27,000 sq ft and features

My little girl, like most children her age

is obsessed with Frozen, so it was a no

brainer to have a Frozen-themed birthday

party for her 4th birthday. However,

after buying everything Frozen themed

in sight to decorate the party, it became

obvious that choosing the theme was the

easy part – I had no idea what to do to

entertain the kids at the party.

That was until a very

helpful mum pointed

me towards Pick ‘N’

Mix parties after telling

me about the fabulous

Frozen party they

had put on for her

daughter the previous

month.

I couldn’t wait to surprize my little girl with

a visit from Elsa and Anna, so I got in

touch with Pick ‘N’ Mix straight away to

book them for her party.

The staff were very friendly over the

phone and we ended up booking the

one hour princess party which got us two

singing princesses (the amazing Elsa and

Ana) with games and prizes, and I’ve got

to say that there were fab! They made it

a really special day for her. She was so

happy when Elsa and Anna knocked on

the door. Her face was picture when she

was able to meet Elsa and Anna and get

a picture with them.

The princesses were so friendly, their costumes were fabulous and their voices were amazing - they really brought Elsa and Anna to life!
