Follow Taser High Route starting from Taser Cable Car mountain station. Passing the little Taser church, you walk into the forested valley. Shortly before reaching the end of the valley, the trail ascends to the meadow of Streitweide. A gravel road (sign-posted as trail nr. 19) descends down to Verdins, passing Hofer Farm.

Did you know… Three sources of drinking water rise from the ground about 100 meters above Streitweide. The entire municipality of Schenna is supplied with drinking water from these wells.

Sunny’s tip… Explore the fun stuff for kids: Streitweide Cabin features a brand new playground, ponies and sheep!

Did you know… The so-called Waal is an irrig-ation channel, constructed in the Middle Ages. The water it carries comes from alpine streams and wells. Thanks to the highly branched Waal-system, fields,orchardsandvineyardscan be irrigated even in very dry summers.

Sunny’s tip… Keep your eyes open! You will findfour“Eye-catchers”alongSchenna Waalweg Path, pointing to landmarks in the area.

FollowIfingerStreet,startingjustabove Schenna’s school and the path sign-posted as trail nr. 12 to-wards the Taser Cable Car’s valley station. Alternatively, Schenna-Bus leaves regularly at Schenna town center and stops at Pichler Hotel, next to the cable car station. The beautiful Waalweg Trail starts here, continuing to the romantic Katzen-leiter (German for cat-ladder), crossingforestsandfieldstowardsBrunjaunhofFarm.ShortlyafterSt. Georgen, near Locherhof Farm, you arrive at the main road. Follow the road back to Schenna or take the bus, which leaves every hour from St. Georgen.

Passing the church of Verdins and following Wieser Steig Path (sign-posted as trail nr. 16), you reach Schenna Waalweg Trail. The beautiful and shaded path con-tinues in a northward direction, passing Hasenegg Inn towards Waalerhütte. When you are ready to return, re-trace your steps along the trail until shortly before crossing the street, you reach a junction.Gorightandfollowthepath back to Verdins, passing by Ederhof Farm.

Did you know… The person in charge for the ir-rigation channels, was called the Waaler. Along the channels, you stillfindso-calledWaalschellen:bells that are struck by a little hammer, set in motion by a ro-tating water wheel. If something interrupted the watercourse, the wheel would stop turning and the peal of bells would cease.

Sunny’s tip… Visit the Waalerhütte, which is now a restaurant! In older times, it was the home of the Waaler. Here, he was close to the Waal and could have an eye on it at all times.

Follow the pleasant Mitterplatt Path, starting from Schenna to-wardsthepublicpooljustoutsideof town. Walking through Tschoi-gassl Alley, you pass by Oberhasler Farm and reach Planta Castle. From there, you take Schönblick Street and Vergil Street, crossing Passer River over Lazagsteig Bridge. You reach the center of Meran by fol-lowing the shaded Gilf Promenade. Walking with a baby buggy? On two occasions, you will need to lift the buggy over stairs.

Did you know… 74 acres of vineyards are located near Mitterplatt Path and the church’s hillside. The most com-monly grown vine in Schenna is the Vernatsch, a popular, local variety. However, there are about ten times more orchards than vineyards in Schenna: More than 750,000 fruit trees grow on about 741 acres of land.

Sunny’s tip… Visit the viniculture museum in Rametz Castle: It informs about the viniculture of the area and features historical working equipment.

Starting from Schenna you drive toward Taser and shortly before ar-rivingatRieserhofFarm,youwillfinda parking area. Walk towards Fam-ilienalm Taser until shortly before reaching the Taser mountain station. A path on the right-hand side leads to Greitererhof, where a breathtak-ing view over mountains and valleys awaits you. The same route takes you back to your car.

Did you know… For decades the farmers’ children on Schenna Mountain had their own little elementary school located at the Luemer farmhouse. It had to be closed yearsagoduetoinsufficientstudent enrollment.

Sunny’s tip… The Greitererhof Farm features an awesome sandbox with plenty of toys and play items.

You will start your hike at the church of Verdins and walk up the street to the upper road and Hasenegg Inn. Continuing on this road, you reach Hoferhof Farm, where a dirt path through thefieldsleadstothedrivewayfor Vollplatzhof Farm. Follow the signs pointing to Bachlerhof with its beautiful meadow. To return a different way, follow the path sign-posted as trail no. 16. You will pass Vollplatzhof and parallel to the farm’s driveway, a beautiful trail leads to the Taser Cable Car valley station.

Did you know… 42% of South Tyrol is covered by forest, which we have cultivated for centuries. A report by Vienna University about forestry in Europecertifiesthatourforestsare in excellent condition.

Sunny’s tip… The Bachlerhof Farm features alittleplayground,afishpondand guinea pigs! If you stay for a meal,youwillfindatraditionalspecialty: The Schenner Krapfen, a typical pastry from Schenna on the menu.

Take the cable car in Verdins and adjacentchairliftuptoGrube.Thelevel path, post-signed as trail no. 2, leads through the forest to the Gompm Alm. From there, the path (sign-posted as trail no. 4) ascends gently through beautiful alpine meadows before reaching the Mahdalm. On the way back, follow the European long-distance path E5 to Hirzerhütte and Klammeben, where trail no. 8A leads back to the chairlift Grube.

Did you know… The European long-distance path E5 is one of twelve hiking trails extending across the entire con-tinent. The E5 is 3,200 kilometers long - it starts at the Atlantic coast in France, and leads all the way to Verona in Italy.

Sunny’s tip… Well worth a taste: The Mah-dalm’s farmers produce their own buttermilk, butter, cream cheese and Tyrolean Grey Cheese from the milk of their fivecows.

Starting from Klammeben, the Hirzer Cable Car mountain station, follow the path to Hirzerhütte. A gravel road sign-posted as trail no. 5 leads to the Gompm Alm, where you travel on trail no. 4 descending to Hochwies Inn and the small village ofPrenn.InPrenn,youwillfindthemid-station of the Hirzer Cable Car.

Did you know… 4 horses, a Bernese mountain dog, and Spectacles sheep (South Tyrol’s oldest sheep breed) live at Gompm Alm Cabin. These dogs and sheep are well known in the area – their picture even deco-rates the house wines’ labels!

Sunny’s tip… Watch and participate: Every Sunday, the Gompm Alm’s farm-ers bake their own bread in the big rustic stove!

Starting from the Taser Cable Car mountain station, follow the Taser High Route to Greitererhof. Continue on the dirt path towards Egger Farm, where trail no. 18B descends to the beautifully located Schnugger. The Schnugger’s largefieldisagreatplayareaforchildren! Following path no. 20, you will pass Holznerhof Farm and then you descend to the Taser Cable Car valley station.

Did you know… Almost 15,000 animal species live in South Tyrol’s forests and more than half of them are bugs and butterflies.Manyofthemarerarethough: approximately 41% of animal species in South Tyrol are classifiedasendangered.

Sunny’s tip… You will rarely catch sight of deer, foxes or other big forest animals…but try looking below your own feet to see tiny ones: 2.5 barrels of forest soil contain 1.6 trillion living creatures – by comparison ‘only’ 6.9 billion people live on planet earth.

Follow the ascending, panoramic road starting from St. Georgen up to Rastlhof. Then, at the curve beside the farmhouse, turn onto the wide path and cross the hillside throughfields,passingbeautifulold chestnut trees. Then take the paved Berger Street going down to Schenna’s Waalweg Path, which leads back to St. Georgen.

Starting from the Taser Cable Car mountain station, follow the Taser High Route to Greitererhof Farm. Continue on the dirt path towards Egger Farm, where a breathtaking view over Schenna, Meran and the valley awaits you. Continue on the High Route up and down through forests and clearings until you reach Gsteier Farm. We rec-ommend you take the Meran 2000 Cable Car from the mid-station justbelowtheInntogetbacktothe valley.

Did you know… White Tyrolean mountain sheep live on Gsteier Farm. The farm-ers shear their sheep in May and October, using the wool for felting and knitting. The sheep are weaned twice a year.

Sunny’s tip… The Gsteier’s stable has a little museum on local farming life: Discover antique sheep shears, yokes, and sewing machines!

Did you know… South Tyrolean farms are mostly very small structures, especially the farms at high altitudes. Therefore, farmers are often de-pendentonasidejob.Manyofthem choose tourism as an addi-tional source of income. This be-nefitsyouandallguestsvisitingSouth Tyrol: Farm holidays are a wonderful, nature-oriented experience, whereas the farm restaurants offer some of the best specialties our traditional cuisine has to offer!

Sunny’s tip… Rastlhof Farm is a paradise for people and animals alike: Goats, Blacknose sheep, Tyrolean mountain sheep, cats, ponies, a Bernese mountain dog, and ten Highland cattle live on this farm!

Take the Verdins Cable Car to the little village of Oberkirn. Follow the paved road no. 40A through forests andfieldsuntilyoureachVidegg:an old hamlet at an altitude of 1,500 meters. This charming hamlet con-sists of a little church, three farm restaurants (Gasthaus Videgg, Haashof, Hiaslbauer), and a few farms. Follow the same route back to the cable car station.

Did you know… Not a village yet, but nonethe-less a settlement: a hamlet is definedasacongregationofat least three, and at most ten, farms.

Sunny’s tip… Two times a month in July and August, Haashof Farm hosts chil-dren’s parties with fun games, music and entertainment.

Follow the gravel path starting from the Hirzer Cable Car mountain station until you reach Hirzerhütte Cabin. Almenweg Path (sign-posted as trail no. 2B) ascends over a small ridge to the Rotmoos: a wide and level mead-ow, ideal for playing, exploring and picnicking. Continue on the path towards Mahdalm and Hintereg-galm and follow the European long-distance path no. E5 back to the Hirzer Cable Car.

Did you know… A Norgg is a South Tyrolean le-gendaryfigure:Amountainimpoffering their help to humans in various legends and myths. Their help, however, is never for nothing - they always ask for reciprocation which humans are seldom able to deliver.

Sunny’s tip… Adultscanenjoylivemusicalevents organized by Hintereg-galm three times a month on Thursdays, while children play on the natural playground or by the little mountain brook near the farmhouse.

Take the Verdins Cable Car to the little village of Oberkirn. From here on, trail no. 4 leads through mountain meadows passing an antique watermill and finallyreachingtheHochwies Inn with its breathtaking view over mountain landscapes and valleys. Did you know… Two farmers share the Tonig-bauern watermill near Pren-nerbach Brook. The exact date of its construction is unknown, however, the mill was in service until 1970 and was restored in 2008.

Sunny’s tip… Hochwies features a big play-ground with toys, trampoline andsandbox!OnthefirstSun-day of August, a children’s party with Bobby, the popular South Tyrolean circus monkey, takes place at Hochwies.

Follow the high route no. 40 start-ing from Klammeben, the Hirzer Cable Car mountain station, until you reach Stafellalm. Stafellalm is surrounded by a beautiful wide meadow on top of which you will findaso-calledweathercross.Follow the gravel paths no. 2 and 2B, descending through forests to Oberkirn. From there, trail no. 4 leads back to the Hirzer Cable Car.

Did you know… The so-called weather cross, also known as the hail or wayside cross, was built in order to ask for protection from the forces of nature. Weather crosses were often the destination of local religious processions.

Sunny’s tip… Relax by lying on the Stafel-lalm’s beautiful meadow or enjoythetraditionalcuisine:The Stafellalm’s menu includes all kinds of homemade spe-cialties like buttermilk, speck, dumplings, smoked sausages andfruitjuices.

Take the Taser Cable Car to the Familienalm Taser family resort, located at an altitude of 1,450 meters. The Taser family resort features various adventure playgrounds, a high rope course, archery, an Indian village, and a little mountain zoo with goats, lamas, alpacas, donkeys, guinea pigs, ponies, and rabbits. From the resort you can go for numerous hikesandwalks.Oryoucanjustspend a wonderful day at the Taser enjoyingthewonderfultraditionalcuisine and the breathtaking view!

It is only a short way from Klam-meben’s Hirzer Cable Car moun-tain station, to Hirzerhütte and Reseggeralm. Beautifully located, these two farms are surrounded by alpine meadows and feature an incredible view over the Texel Range. After spending a few up-lifting hours there, you can retrace your steps back to the cable car.

Did you know… The mountain farmers with properties at 800 to 2,000 meters altitude all share in getting South Tyrolean milk from the cow into the grocery store within 24 hours. The sur-rounding farms produce many of the over 90 regional types of cheese.

Sunny’s tip… The farmers’ cattle spend their summer vacation on the moun-tain. You can observe plenty of cows, horses and sheep on the Alpine meadows from May until October. Here by Hirzerhütte, even Alpacas spend there sum-mers!Themountainfieldswiththeir many wild herbs offer the ideal nutrition for cows so that the milk they produce is particu-larly tasty and healthy.

Follow trail no. 18A on the wide gravel path starting from Taser Cable Car mountain station. Con-tinue on the dirt path for about an hour through the forest until you reach Ifingerhütte. For ambitious little hikers trail no. 24A ascends to Lenzeben and over a ridge up to Lauwand Peak at an altitude of 2,254 meters. To get back to Taser Cable Car, follow Taser High Route and pass by Egger Mountain Inn.

Did you know… AtIfingerhütteyouareveryclosetoIfingerMountain,Schenna’s landmark mountain. Many decades ago, the big granite rock by the cabin rolled all the way down from the mountain range.

Sunny’s tip… The big meadow at the bottom ofIfingerMountainisidealforplaying, resting and exploring!

Walk past the church of Verdins on the Wieser Steig Path and trail no. 16 to get to Vollplatzhof Farm. Follow the Farm Trail (“Höfeweg”) upanddownthroughfieldsandforests until you reach Holznerhof. Continue down the farm’s drive-way and as the road ascends gently to Zmailerhof Farm. On the way back you can descend to Rastlhof and walk through mountain mead-ows to Salfgut and St. Georgen.

Did you know… ZmailerhofFarmisajewelamongst farm restaurants: Its kitchen, hallway and the beauti-ful fresco around the entrance are under a preservation order.

5 The Waalweg Paths surrounding Meran

“Once upon a time…” these four little words take you to fairyland in an instant. But hearing them in enchanted natural sceneries is a one-of-a-kind experience! On our trips to fairyland, we will hear clas-sic and newly invented fairy tales, play fun games and much more…

CREATIVE NATURE WORKSHOP We will explore the forests – collectingroots,stones,flowers,branches, and leaves. Out of these natural treasures, we will then pro-duce pieces of art, such as dream catchers, bracelets, little baskets, clayfigurines,paintsfromflowersand musical forest instruments.

WATER WORKSHOP

Water is life. On this hike, we will stop at different stations to learn about water in general, water animals, the water cycle, and the physical properties of water. We will have a lot of fun building a spoon net, examining a brook’s inhabitants, and feeling the water’s stimulating power during a Kneipp Cure.
