Quarterly Newsletter

July-Sept 2017 As a parent, guardian, grandparent, etc., there

are three places we NEVER want to see our chil-

dren. That is in the hospital, jail, or in a coffin. I

am fortunate and blessed that I’ve only seen my

three sons in the hospital and jail because they

can always recover from those visits. However,

with programs like Family Matters, there is a

better possibility that my child will not return to

jail or an early coffin.

Family Matters has

taught us both how to

communicate with each

other better as well as

within our personal and professional relation-

ships. My child would often mention that he

did not have an addiction. Ultimately, the Fami-

ly Matters counselors provided some essential

information that will definitely help.

Family Matters is more than just a program to

discuss how to prevent reverting back to risky

habits. It’s a group designed to equip individu-

als with the necessary skills to create and main-

tain a better family foundation. They (the Fami-

Get To Know Your Regional Facilitators

Summit CountyHello, my name is Christy Kraemer. I was re-hired by Oriana House Inc. to be the full time Family Matter’s counselor for Summit County in April 2017. I am beyond honored and thrilled to work in this capacity. I grew up in the Akron area. I began my career in Chemical Dependency in 2007 as I found a growing passion for healing hurts related to this disease. Prior to that point, I worked with a staggering number of individuals struggling with addiction as an educator, youth worker and mental health provid-er. I vividly recall discussion that took place in Summit County as the program was begun in 2011 while I was a counselor here. We were taking leaps of faith that Family Matters would gain support as it begun. We are still taking leaps of faith in all who attend, and I see weekly miracles in doing so. Not only did the Family Matters program get going, but it has grown in all the Oriana House regions and I look forward to ongoing growth into the future. When I left my position at Oriana House in August 2012, I moved to North Carolina for a while. I had two other employers since then, and made sure to continue to meet with families of those who struggle with an addiction in each place as this is pertinent to healing for eve-ryone. When we give voice to the destructiveness that addiction creates within our families (immediate, extended, community, faith, workplace, school, peer group, etc.) than we can begin to live more fully in healthy relationships and stop the negative ripples. This program is like spinach for us as sailors as we are tired of the turbulence and need tools for the battle for life. In so doing, more lives are touched and improved than we may ever know. ~ Christy Kraemer LICDC, OCPSII, MACM.

North Central RegionIn North Central Ohio, our counselors all have an opportunity to facilitate Family Matters. This quarter, Carolyn and Intern Tailor will be facilitating at Rigel; it is yet to be determined which of our gifted counse-lors will be facilitating at NOBARS.

Carolyn Paulus is a Licensed Social Worker and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III. Carolyn en-joys helping the entire family heal through education and support, as addiction is a family disease. Car-olyn works in our opiate specific Rigel program.

Intern Tailor is gaining experience in substance use disorders and family dynamics, as she is studying for her degree in addiction studies and forensic psychology at Tiffin University. Tailor will be assisting with Family Matters and duties between CROSSWAEH CBCF and Rigel throughout the summer.

Help & Resources

Mental illnesses, alcohol and drug addiction

disorders are very common. National esti-

mates are that about one in five adults will

experience a mental illness or addictive

disorder at some point in their lives. Two

out of every three Ohioans are impacted by

a friend or family member with an addic-

tion or mental illness.

When this happens to you or your loved

one, services and supports are available in

our community to get you on the road to

recovery. We believe and expect that any-

one can recover and/or manage their condi-

tions successfully. With help comes hope

which is the foundation of recovery.

Recovery starts here.

If you, or a family member, are experienc-ing a mental health, or an alcohol, or other drug-related emergency, seek immediate assistance by calling the 24-hour Suicide Prevention, Mental Health Crisis, Infor-mation and Referral Hotline.

Recovery Month

Cuyahoga County

Hey, my name is Dr. Albert Pride, Jr. I am the Family Matters facilitator for the Cleveland Campus. As Family Matters Facilitator, I have an opportunity to interact with families and their loved one. I’m able to help and encour-age them both to be honest with each other as it relates to their recovery and reentry back into the family and community. I feel as if I have the best position in the world. I enjoy helping families and loved ones heal their relationships through chemical dependency education and the use of role plays to demonstrate social skills that emu-late real life situations. The Family Matters program also provides a forum for families and their loved ones to ex-

change thoughts and feelings as it relates to their struggles and challenges of the life situations and issues. Yes, I love what I do because I have an op-portunity to help family and loves in their recovery process. Plus, I also have an opportunity to learn from family members and their loved ones. I hope to see you in Family Matters, Smile!
