14 October 2018

Family Service

for

Harvest Festival

Welcome!

Welcome to our Family Service. There is no children’s workshop and we

all stay together in church for the whole service. Busy bags are available

at both doors and if anyone gets restless, please feel very welcome to

walk about the church with them during the service.

Later in the service, everyone is invited to come to the altar to receive

communion or God’s blessing. All who are communicant members of this or

another church are welcome to receive communion. Please bow your head

to indicate if you would like a blessing.

During communion, the choir sings on behalf of the congregation; this

allows us the opportunity to think more deeply about our relationship with

God in our lives, through meditating on the words and music chosen for

the day. The mass setting today is Stanford in C & F (S,B,A).

After the service, refreshments are served in the East end of the

Church. Please feel very welcome to stay and enjoy, and if you have not

been to the church before, please do introduce yourself to one of the

clergy or churchwardens – we’d love to meet you.

Weekday Communion Services: Tuesday 12.00pm; Wednesday 12.00pm

(both Common Worship); Thursday 10.30am (BCP).

Silent Prayer is on Fridays at 12 noon

The Parish is part of an Anglican Team with St John the Evangelist

Church in Grove Lane and St John the Baptist Kingston Vale, and also a

member of the Local Ecumenical Project with Union Street Baptist Church

and the United Reformed Church in Eden Street.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES

Order for a Family Service The choir will sing the Introit Jesu the very thought of thee (Bairstow)

Jesu, the very thought of Thee With sweetness fills my breast; But sweeter far Thy face to see,

And in Thy presence rest.

The Opening Hymn is 476.

The Lord be with you, and also with you.

In a few moments of silence we remember before God the things we have done that are wrong, always remembering God’s readiness to forgive us and set us free from the mistakes of the past.

We say together...

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbours in the things that we have thought and said and done. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen

The Lord enrich you with his grace, and nourish you with his blessing; the Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil; the Lord accept your prayers, and absolve you from your offences, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

The Gloria

We sing the Peruvian Gloria. We all sing the lines in bold.

Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Father. Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Father. To him be glory for ever. To him be glory for ever. Alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen, alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen. Glory to God, glory to God, Son of the Father. Glory to God, glory to God, Son of the Father. To him be glory for ever. To him be glory for ever. Alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen, alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen.

Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Spirit. Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Spirit. To him be glory for ever. To him be glory for ever. Alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen, alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen. We say together the collect – the special prayer for this Sunday: Eternal God, you crown the year with your goodness and you give us the fruits of the earth in their season: grant that we may use them to your glory, for the relief of those in need and for our own well-being; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

The reading from the Old Testament today is Hebrews 4:12-end. Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

The Creed Let us declare our faith in God...

We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high. We believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

We stand for the Hymn 497

During the hymn, if you have harvest gifts to donate, please bring them up now.

We remain standing and turn to face the centre of the church from where today’s Gospel is read.

The Gospel Luke 8:4-15

Hear the Gospel of our Lord according to Luke: Glory to you, O Lord.

When a great crowd gathered and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: ‘A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he

sowed, some fell on the path and was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered for lack of moisture. Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it. Some fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold.’ As he said this, he called out, ‘Let anyone with ears to hear listen!’ Then his disciples asked him what this parable meant. He said, ‘To you it has been given to know the secrets* of the kingdom of God; but to others I speak* in parables, so that “looking they may not perceive, and listening they may not understand.” ‘Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones on the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. The ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe only for a while and in a time of testing fall away. As for what fell among the thorns, these are the ones who hear; but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. But as for that in the good soil, these are the ones who, when they hear the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

The Talk

The talk today is given by the Rector, Jonathan Wilkes.

The Prayers of Intercession Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you And also with you We offer one another a sign of peace. We return to our places singing the Offertory Hymn And can it be. A collection is taken for the work of the church, and the bread and wine for the Eucharist are brought to the altar. 1 And can it be that I should gain An int'rest in the Savior's blood? Died He for me, who caused His

pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, should die for me?

3 He left His Father's throne above, So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love,

And bled for Adam's helpless race; 'Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me. [Refrain]

Refrain: Amazing love! how can it be

That Thou, my God, should die for me!

4 Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature's

night; Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with

light; My chains fell off, my heart was free; I rose, went forth and followed Thee. [Refrain]

2 'Tis mystery all! Th'Immortal dies!

Who can explore His strange

design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine! 'Tis mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. [Refrain]

5 No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him is mine! Alive in Him, my living Head,

And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach th'eternal throne,

And claim the crown, through Christ my own. [Refrain]

Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer Yours Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. all things come from you, and of your own do we give you.

The Lord is here. His spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, Father; Lord of all creation; in your love you made us for yourself. When we turned away you did not reject us, but came to meet us in your Son. You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us. He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin. On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends he took bread, and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Father we do this in remembrance of him: his body is the bread of life. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said:

Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins: do this in remembrance of me. Father we do this in remembrance of him: his blood is shed for all. As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy gifts make us one in Christ, our risen Lord. With your whole church throughout the world we offer you this sacrifice of praise and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Invitation to Communion Everyone is welcome to come to the altar to receive a blessing or the bread and wine. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. While the congregation comes forward to receive Holy Communion, the choir will sing the motet Tantum ergo (Vierne) Tantum ergo sacramentum veneremur cernui, et antiquum documentum novo cedat ritui; praestet fides supplementum sensuum defectui.

Genitori Genitoque laus et iubilatio, salus, honor, virtus quoque sit et benedictio; procedenti ab utroque compar sit laudatio. Amen.

Therefore so great a Sacrament Let us fall down and worship, And let the old law Give way to a new rite, And let faith stand forward To make good the defects of sense

To the Father and the Son Be praise and joy, Health, honour and virtue And blessing, And to him proceeding from both Be equal praise. Amen.

After Communion the priest will say:

Lord of the harvest, with joy we have offered thanksgiving for your love in creation and have shared in the bread and the wine of the kingdom: by your grace plant within us a reverence for all that you give us and

make us generous and wise stewards of the good things we enjoy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen The Final Hymn is Come labour on. During this hymn, everyone is invited to bring their harvest offerings to the altar 1 Come, labor on. Who dares stand idle on the harvest plain while all around us waves the golden grain? And to each servant does the Master say, "Go work today."

3 Come, labor on. Cast off all gloomy doubt and faithless fear! No arm so weak but may do service here. Though feeble agents, may we all fulfill God's righteous will.

2 Come, labor on. Claim the high calling angels cannot share; to young and old the gospel gladness bear. Redeem the time; its hours too swiftly fly. The night draws nigh.

4. Come, labor on. No time for rest, till glows the western sky, till the long shadows o'er our pathway lie, and a glad sound comes with the setting sun, "Well done, well done!"

The Blessing

Go in peace to Love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
