Copyright ©2010 The Church at Brook Hills www.brookhills.org 1 Family Worship Guide – Week 26 READ o Begin by summarizing the events of chapter one. The LORD called Jonah to do something he did not want to do. Serving as a missionary in the city of Nineveh was the least desirable calling he could have received. Nineveh was a great and wicked city (v. 2), and Jonah did not care about the city’s inhabitants. In fact, he despised them. We learn at the end of the book that he knew if the people repented, God would be gracious and restrain His judgment (4:1‐ 2). Jonah preferred Nineveh’s destruction to its deliverance. He boarded a boat heading in the opposite direction to escape his calling, but God intervened by sending a storm. The boat was in danger of being destroyed when Jonah volunteered to be thrown overboard in an attempt to appease God and stop the storm (1:12, 15). In so doing, Jonah reveals he would rather die than go to Nineveh. But God did not let that happen, so He appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah (1:17). o Read Jonah 2 o Often, we read the story of Jonah and consider the fish to be an instrument of judgment. We think, “If Jonah had not disobeyed, then he would not have wound up in such a precarious position.” However, had God not provided the fish, Jonah would certainly have died (v. 5). Because God put him in the belly of a fish, he did not. The fish, then, is an instrument of salvation not judgment. Just before dying, Jonah cried out to God in repentance (v. 7). In response, God provided the fish to rescue Jonah from the consequences of his prejudiced, disobedient heart. Jonah realizes this and prays this prayer, the theme of which is captured in the last phrase: “Salvation belongs to the LORD!” After being freed from the whale, Jonah went to Nineveh and fulfilled his commission. As a result, a generation of Ninevites repented and was rescued from divine judgment. o In Matthew 12:40‐41, Jesus associates His death with Jonah’s time spent in the belly of the great fish. People like the Pharisees viewed the cross as an instrument of divine judgment. Cursed people died on crosses (See, Galatians 3:13). However, God sent Jesus to die on the cross not because it was an instrument of judgment but of salvation. As a result, all nations need to know that “salvation belongs to the LORD.” Christians are commissioned to carry the message of the cross to all nations so that a remnant from all nations can be rescued from divine judgment. Bottom Line: God rescues sinners from divine judgment through the cross of Jesus Christ and releases them to carry the message of the cross to all nations. Questions: Have you tended to view Jonah’s fish as an instrument of judgment or salvation? What about Jesus’ cross? Did God save Jonah for his sake or for the sake of Nineveh? Does God save sinners for their sake or for the sake of the nations? What prejudices might prevent you and your family from being involved in global missions? What does it mean to say “salvation belongs to the LORD”? When was the last time you praised God for providing salvation through the cross of Christ? PRAY o Read Window on the World, pg. 88‐89 Iraq o Use Prayer Card SING o Use lyric sheet and mp3 download of “Sovereign God” o The book of Jonah gives us a picture of both God’s sovereign control over all creation and His compassion for the hearts of men. We see that He is powerful enough to save Jonah and the Ninevites, but He is also willing and gracious enough to save them despite their wickedness. In light of these truths, we chose Sovereign God for this week. It is a song that gives us an opportunity to reflect upon our strong and loving God. By saving us in Christ He demonstrates His sovereignty and compassion despite our wickedness. We respond to the truth in this song much like Isaiah in Isaiah 6. Humbled before Him, we accept His love and mercy, and say with confidence, “Here am I, everything for You.” MEMORIZE o Jonah 2:7 When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.
