These chapters describe the judgment of God coming upon the whole world as the earth is devastated and the people suffer, while at the same time the people of God are secured in their own city (cf. 24:4; 25:8; 26:19; 27:6). In chapter 26 Isaiah, the prophet, writes a song that will be sung by the redeemed when the Messiah establishes His kingdom. Isaiah pictures himself standing in the redeemed land listening to the people express their thanks to and confidence in God. The Lord is the One who achieves their final and complete victory. o Read Isaiah 26:1‐6 o Isaiah 26:1 – In contrast with “the city” that will be destroyed (cf. 24:12‐13; 25:2), the redeemed will have a “strong city.” Throughout the world, the redeemed will live in cities and towns, but the strong city (Jerusalem) where the Messiah reigns pictures the security of the world’s redeemed inhabitants. Because of the Messiah’s presence there, that city is figuratively said to have salvation as “walls” and “bulwarks.” o Isaiah 26:2‐4 – This city will be opened for the “righteous nation”, namely those who possess faith in the promises of God. They will enjoy perfect peace because He is firm like a rock and is everlasting. o Isaiah 26:5‐6 – In contrast with the righteous who enter the special city of God, people who fly to dwell in the “lofty city” (i.e., who persist in their pride) will be humbled (cf. 25:12) because they did not trust in Him. The poor and the needy will trample the proud who dwell in this city. This was a reversal of outcomes, an act of God’s justice against the proud who had taken advantage of the poor. We see again an important scriptural principle – God has special concern for the poor who seek Him (cf. 25:4). o Read Isaiah 26:7‐21 o The song continues by expressing the certainty that deliverance will not come because of the people’s own efforts, but because of God’s work on their behalf. Therefore, they will continue to trust in Him. o Isaiah 26:7‐11 – In a confession of trust the prophet Isaiah affirms that it is good for people to live righteously, because God levels their path. At the same time, God is the wholehearted desire of the righteous – He is the “desire of their souls.” o Isaiah 26:12‐15 – In the kingdom, believers will enjoy the peace God gives and will recognize God’s work on their behalf (v. 12). They will affirm that they remained true to God even though they will have been under the domination of others (v. 13). The key point in all of these verses is that God is the One who achieved the victory, not the people. The Bottom Line: God is the One who achieves final and complete victory for His people. Therefore, He should be the desire of our souls. Questions: In Isaiah 26, the people of Judah gave God the credit for the victory and peace they enjoyed. What victory has God accomplished for us? (Christ’s work on the cross) Do you ever find yourself taking any sort of credit for this victory? If so, how? The people claimed that God’s name was the desire of their souls. Can you make the same claim about God? Are there things you desire more than God and His glory? PRAY o Read Window on the World, pg. 102‐102 Kyrgyz (Kyrgystan) o Use Prayer Card SING o Use lyric sheet and mp3 download of “Hallelujah” o Steven wrote the song Hallelujah based on Revelation chapter 5. In that chapter, we see heavenly worship. We see the image of Christ as a lamb looking as if it had been slain. We know that indeed Christ was our sacrificial lamb. Through His death, He atoned for our sins and reconciled us to God. The angels sang these words to Him: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” One day we will be gathered with believers from all over the world to worship the risen lamb, Jesus Christ. We will lift our praises to Him together. He is worthy! MEMORIZE o Isaiah 26:8 In the path of your judgments, O Lord, we wait for you; your name and remembrance are the desire of our soul.
