Our mission is at the forefront of everything we do. It unites us and serves as our foundation for why we are here. Together, we put our mission in motion to empower young people, improve health and well-being, as well as provide support and inspire action in our communities.

The YMCA of Greater Augusta has been committed to serving individuals and families in the CSRA for more than 160 years. Nearly 50,000 members have joined our cause and support our mission. We join together because we have a shared vision to strengthen our community.

The Y is unique because we can adapt to fill needs in our community. We learned that children were drowning in our neighborhood, so we began the Safety Around Water program to teach water survival skills; we learned that children in the CSRA were sleeping on the floor, so we began A Place to Dream to give beds to those in need; we learned that children were going hungry when school ended for the summer, so we partnered with Feeding American for the Summer Food Program to provide meals during the summer. It’s this adaptability that keeps our mission moving.

We like to think that we are more than a gym. We are an organization that can be counted on when our community needs us. We provide a place where everyone in our community can connect and thrive, where you can be, belong and become.

Across the Association

At the Aiken County Family YMCA, we have ramped-up some of our youth programs with the help of local partners, staff and our Board of Directors. Our Safety

Around Water (S.A.W.) program helped over 100 children have a safer summer; during Fit 4 School, over 1,000 students prepped for school at the Y; and we partnered with the Aiken Standard for the second annual Kids Triathlon. We also had an 8% increase over last year’s day campers.

In 2019, we awarded $130,000 in scholarships. New programs include Home School PE, MashUp and several water wellness classes.

Safety Around Water

Augusta South Family YMCA held a successful first Halloween Fright Fest in 2019 with more than 100 members and nonmembers participating.

In 2019, we awarded $128,089 in scholarships. New programs include Body Pump, Barre and Morning Crossfit.

We are looking forward to adding more group exercise classes and some new strength equipment in 2020.

BARNWELL COUNTY FAMILY YMCAThe Barnwell County Family YMCA started offering new grant-funded children’s

fitness programs and dance in 2019. We continued to expand camp, with a 12% increase in day campers over 2018. Our facility got a new functional fitness space to be used for Crossfit and similar exercise programs.

In 2019, we awarded $28,000 in scholarships. New programs include off-site senior wellness classes, children’s fitness programs and Inspire Me 2 Dance.

BURKE COUNTY FAMILY YMCAWe were thrilled to welcome our 11th branch, Burke County Family YMCA in June 2019! In our first few months, we held several successful events, including our Halloween Boonanza and Grinch Christmas Party, that brought together hundreds of members and nonmembers from our community.

We are looking forward to adding more group exercise classes, expanding our childcare programs and participating in Safety Around Water (S.A.W.) Week. We will also be adding some new equipment this year!

Our Marshall Family YMCA branch had successful video game tournaments during the year to benefit our Annual Campaign. The events brought in good

participation from youth and parents! We added 12 new Schwinn spin bikes this year. We are excited to expand our youth sports offerings in 2020 and continue serving youth and families in our community.

In 2019, we awarded $13,000 in scholarships. Day campers in 2019 increased by 14% from 2018. New programs include more Les Mills classes.

Les Mills Body Pump Class

We had two big events in 2019 at the North Augusta Family YMCA. Our Annual Golf Classic raised $10,000 toward our Annual Campaign! We also had our biggest Fall Festival ever, an annual event that is free for the community. This year, we added new treadmills to our branch, and are going to add five new ellipticals in 2020. In the coming year, we’ll be adding Circuit Training Bootcamp and will be expanding our class schedule and time offerings.

In 2019, we awarded $49,400 in scholarships. New programs include Kardio Kidz, Crossfit 101, Tabata Thai, Barre and Pilates.

NORTH JEFFERSON FAMILY YMCAAt North Jefferson Family YMCA, we celebrated our 10th birthday in 2019 with a

10-Year Birthday Bash! We also had fun experimenting with new classes this year through Mix it Up. These class demos give members the opportunity to test out potential classes. Our facility got additional medicine ball racks, chair racks and fans. In 2020, we are excited to begin a new format for tumbling!

In 2019, we awarded $87,000 in scholarships. New programs include Mix it Up.

RIVERFRONT YMCAOur Riverfront YMCA branch added six new group exercise classes in 2019: Friday afternoon Barre, Sunrise Yoga on the River, Monday and Wednesday afternoon WERQ, and Monday and Wednesday morning LIFE/Chair One. We were also able to collect and donate over 140 coats to Helm’s Closet.

The Steiner Branch Family Y had a great year! Our most successful event was the Tour De Y bike challenge, part of the GameChanger series. We added new cardio

equipment to our facility, and will be adding new spin bikes in 2020.

In 2019, we awarded $22,251 in scholarships. New programs include Body Combat by Les Mills and HITT Strength.

In 2020, we will be adding a homeschool program, Kids Kardio and Chair One Fitness.

STEINER BRANCH FAMILY YMCA

Tour De Y

The Thomson Family YMCA brought together Y staff and volunteers from the community for an A Place to Dream bed delivery in Thomson. We delivered 30 beds to families in need!

In 2019, we awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships. New programs include Body Combat and swim lessons for youth and adults.

We are looking forward to enhanced onsite gymnastics and specialty summer camp programming in 2020.

A Place to Dream delivery

WILSON FAMILY YMCAIt was a big year for Wilson Family YMCA! We added many new programs in 2019, including CrossFit Gold, Spin Yo, GRIT, CX WERX, private pickleball lessons, soccer

conditioning clinics, Women’s Soccer League and more. We renovated our steam rooms and the air ventilation system for the indoor pool. This year’s biggest

events were our Annual Halloween Bash, Swim with Santa, Pickleball Border Bash, CrossFit Open Competition and Tour De Y. In 2019, we awarded $234,856 in scholarships. Day campers in 2019 increased by 14% from 2018.

Halloween Bash

Our Child Development Center serves children ages six weeks through Pre-K. Our center is unique because most programs will take infants less than three months

of age. Currently, 85% of our families receive scholarship funds to assist with the financial burden of childcare, for a total award of $98,265.

This year, we held a toy donation drive in December for our students. Every student was able to receive a toy this Christmas!

FAMILY YMCA’S CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

In 2019, we had more than 1,200 students enrolled at 30 Primetime sites across four counties. Two-thirds of Primetime students receive a scholarship, for a total of more than $200,000. The Family YMCA’s Primetime Before and Afterschool care provides a safe, well-supervised environment for working parents or guardians to take their children.

This year, we added karate, Girl Scouts and STEAM curriculum. Primetime sites did some fun activities for Halloween, including building haunted gingerbread houses and a pumpkin volcano STEAM project.

Head Start is a federal program that promotes the school readiness of children ages 3 to 5 from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development.

Head Start programs provide comprehensive services to enrolled children and their families, which include health, nutrition, social services and other services determined to be necessary by family needs assessments, in addition to education and cognitive development services. Head Start services are designed to be responsive to each child and family’s ethnic, cultural and linguistic heritage.

SOCIAL MEDIA CONNECTS US

The Burke County Family YMCA opened its doors on June 1, 2019. This new, 20,000 square-foot facility features a large public pool and splash pad, perimeter walking trail, multi-purpose field, spinning theater, Play and Learn childcare and many Y programs and group excersie classes!

This facility was built in collaboration with the Burke County Board of Commisioners with support from several donor organizations. Generous financial support for the project has also been given by the Georgia Power Company, Dalton Utilities, Oglethorpe Power and Ingevity, Inc.

In 2019, Camp Lakeside completed construction on two new cabins, an improved wastewater system and a newly-renovated medical facility. The new cabins increase Camp Lakesides capacity from 60 accessible bed spaces to 180, with an additional 40 bunk spaces in our traditional cabins. Our new Med Shed houses a full-service pharmacy, treatment rooms and residences for a physician and nurses.

With these new improvements, we hosted four medical camps through the Children’s Hospital of Georgia in the summer of 2019: Camp Rainbow (children with cancer), Camp Joint Venture (children with juvenile arthritis and related joint disease), Camp Sweet Life (children with diabetes) and Camp Strong Heart (children with cardiac related diagnoses).

Remaining components of development include an adaptive, zero-entry swimming pool with a splash pad, as well as a new 300-seat chapel and paved walkways to ensure ease of access fo all developed areas of camp. We strive to enhance Camp Lakeside so we can provide a memorable camp experience for all children, youth and adults.

A PLACE TO DREAM

In 2017, we began A Place To Dream to eliminate bedlessness in the CSRA. Through this program, we deliver a bed, sheets, pillow, blanket, stuffed animal, Bible and snacks to children in need.

The program has continued to expand this year with the support of generous donors, partners, area churches, volunteers and Y staff. In 2019, we delivered to new areas, like Jefferson County, and began new partnerships that will help A Place to Dream grow.

2020 will be a year to remember, as we celebrate our milestone 1,000 delivery in January. There are many more children in our area that still need a place to dream. Learn how to volunteer for a bed delivery or donate at www.aplacetodreamaugusta.org.

It is important that children are provided with nutritious, well-balanced meals daily. This becomes a problem for many young people in our community when school is out for the summer. Thanks to the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta’s Summer Food Program/Mobile Food Service:

Our camps offer a Summer Enrichment Program which focuses on S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) and other activities for campers. STEAM education encourages children to be curious and experiment. STEAM learning focuses on hands-on experiences and creative ways to solve problems. This learning approach is an active process of exploring the world that leads to asking questions, making discoveries, and testing those discoveries in the search for new understanding. It encourages lifelong learning and exploration. Our interactive programming also includes instructor-led dance, karate, archery, team sports and more. Your child will have a memorable summer and make lifelong friendships, while continuing to learn skills over the summer, and learning to be part of a group and team.
