Dear Friends ~
We are kicking off our “For Kids Sake” 2016 event. Every
year FYI spearheads a “For Kids Sake” fundraiser. For 2016,
our event will be on June 11th, 2016. Please put it on your
calendar so you don’t miss it.
“For Kids Sake” funds are crucial in allowing us to: 1. Keep
the programs we have running at their current capacity; 2. To
expand programming we currently have or develop new pro-
grams that are needed in our community.
I invite you to consider a sponsorship today. Sponsorships
range from $50—$1,000 or an event sponsorship at $5,000;
in exchange we offer marketing and promotional opportuni-
ties. Most important is to support our wonderful families in
our community. Please call for more information.
This year we are reaching out for volunteers to help with our
big day. We have our fundraising committee or you can vol-
unteer to help with the silent action. If you are interested
please give me a call.
Here is to an exciting winter!
~ Monica Haskell FYI Director 530-2511

Youth In Action, YIA, is a unique program in Chaffee County that provides an opportunity for mid-
dle school students and preschool students to be matched together while developing literacy
skills in the latter. When school is in session, YIA meets weekly in Buena Vista (Mondays) and
Salida (Wednesdays). During the month of October the middle school students and preschool
students got to know each other and now “they have met their match!” We are excited to an-
nounce that we have 12 new matches in each location (BV and Salida). Please keep reading to
see what is happening in YIA during the next 3 months.

Y@C Happenings
Y@C is partnering again with Salida Schools to teach weekly 9th grade health classes. Important discussions happen around risk taking in teens and current event hot topics.
The Towards No Drug Abuse and MRT classes con-tinue at the Salida and BV offices. Teens work hard on topics such as harms of use, increasing motiva-tion, and life skills such as decision making and goal setting in these programs.
Girls’ Circle/Boys’ Council Curriculum finished its first session at Salida Middle School, with 7th grade students gaining skills to develop healthy friend-ships, self esteem and recognize risks of drug and alcohol use.
The annual FYI Halloween Dance was “spooktacular” again this year! Y@C youth created a terrifying haunted house that elicited many screams and fun was had by all! Winter Activities
SHS Student Chefs! Bon Appetit!
Several times through out the year,9th
grade SHS students will cook dinner for the
Nurturing Parenting classes. Families have
a treat in store with meals ranging from
spaghetti to macaroni and cheese and
Chicken Cordon Bleu (just kidding!).
Aaron McCorkindale, Gabriel Thieman, Ian Olson, and
Gary Olson rest after building a picnic table as part of
their Y@C community service project.

Parent Hints to help keep your
family connected through
the holidays and
other stressful times:
1. Set aside time daily when you will connect
with your children. One on one is great, but if
not, make sure you give your undivided atten-
tion to play with, listen to, and observe your
children. And, please, turn off all electronics.
2. Look in the mirror. If your children seem to
be emotional, throwing fits or extra difficult,
don’t forget to check in with yourself. You
might notice your children are reflecting your
emotions. Whatever you are feeling, (i.e.
lonely, upset, discouraged), take time to
breathe, speak kindness to yourself and re-
member how important you are! When your
emotions and body have calmed, re-engage
with your children.
Notice the difference!
3. Notice your children’s emotions. Is one
getting angry frequently? Is one crying often?
Does one not stop wiggling and seem anx-
ious? Get one on one with that child and re-
flect their emotions back to them...while offer-
ing time with you. For example, “Gina, you
seem upset. Would you like to sit with me un-
til you feel better?”
