The The Four Horsemen of the ApocalypseFour Horsemen of the Apocalypse are described in the last book of the New Testament of the Bible, called the Book of Revelations. The chapter tells of a "'book'/'scroll' in God's right hand that is sealed with seven seals". The Lamb of God/Lion of Judah (Jesus Christ) opens the first four of the seven seals, which summons forth four beings that ride out on white, red, black, and pale horses. Although some interpretations differ, in most accounts, the four riders are seen as symbolizing Conquest, War, Famine, and Death, respectively. The Christian apocalyptic vision is that the four horsemen are to set a divine apocalypse upon the world as harbingers of the Last Judgment.

The third horseman of the Apocalypse rides a black horse and is Famine. The horseman carries a pair of balances or weighing scales, indicating the way that bread would have been weighed during a famine. The indicated price of grain is about ten times normal, with an entire day's wages buying enough wheat for only one person, or enough of the less nutritious barley for three, so that workers would struggle to feed their families. FRIGHTENING!

ANCIENT FAMINES• FAMINE AND DROUGHTFAMINE AND DROUGHT• Agriculture in ancient Israel was dependent on irregular rainfall, but drought and consequent drought and consequent

faminefamine were of frequent occurrence. "The land of Israel stands in greater need of rain than other lands [being mountainous in contrast, e.g., to the great river valleys of Mesopotamia and Egypt]; hence famine was more common in it than elsewhere.

• Another cause of famine through natural causes was the failure of the crop through pests and pests and diseasedisease. In addition to these two "acts of God," famine was caused by siege in time of warcaused by siege in time of war. Of the famines in Israel mentioned in the Bible (the most famous, the seven years' famine predicted by Joseph in Egypt, most were due to drought, two to the result of siege – that of Samaria by Ben-Hadad (II Kings 6:24–29) and of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar (ibid. 25:3) – and one the result of a visitation of locustsvisitation of locusts (Joel 1:4–20).

• A vivid description of the effects of drought occurs in Jeremiah 14:1–6. The same conditions, both natural and man-made continued during the period of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, but to them were added famine, or at least shortage of food, which resulted from the strict adherence to the law requiring that land should remain untilled during the Sabbatical yearthat land should remain untilled during the Sabbatical year. The frequency of famine is reflected in the fact that of the seven calamities said to afflict the world because of sin, three are famines of various degrees of intensity: the "famine of drought," which does not affect the whole population, the "famine of panic," which affects all, and the "famine of utter destruction.” The traditional triad of major catastrophes consists of "pestilence, sword, and famine" The fact that, given a choice of one of these three, King David chose pestilence suggests that it was the least of them.

• One ancient book gives a preference in the scale of suffering to famine over the sword. This would indicate that famine was the greatest evil of allfamine was the greatest evil of all: it is in fact difficult to envisage the terrible suffering endured through famine in ancient times. A grim picture of the consequences of the seven-year famine– that in the fourth year people would be reduced to eating unclean animals, in the fifth reptiles and insects, in the sixth their children, and in the seventh their own flesh is probably not so exaggerated as may appear.

• During the siege of Samaria by *Ben-Hadad and of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, the eating of human flesh is mentioned. Ashurbanipal, king of Assyria (669–27) claims that the Babylonians under siege by him ate their children. Similarly, Assyrian treaties threaten potential violators that they will be reduced to eating their children. Josephus mentions the eating of children in Jerusalem during the Roman War. A pathetic story is told of one of the wealthiest women of Jerusalem picking out grain from animal dung after the Roman War . There are at least three historical references to famine caused by the observance of the Sabbatical year, one during the siege of Jerusalem by the forces of Antiochus IV, one in the war of Herod against Antigonus and one during Herod's reign.

• The Midrash (Jewish book) enumerates ten famines which visited the world. One of the three things "which the Holy One, blessed be He, proclaims in person" famine was regarded as the direct result of transgressionstransgressions. This is, of course, specifically mentioned in the Bible where the rule is that famine and drought are either threatened or suffered for sins. Amos interprets occurrences of these calamities as prods to repentance – warning notices of God's wrath aimed to bring the people to contrition contrition and thus avert final destructionand thus avert final destruction. The tendency of the rabbis was to make famine the punishment for specific transgressions – the failure to give the tithes and other dues from one's produce, as a kind of quid pro quo. As a result, fasting and supplicatory prayers and fasts were instituted and the prayers of both pious individuals and people possessing special virtues were regarded as effective in bringing the drought to an end. The rabbis permitted emigration from Ereẓ Israel in the case of famine, but only when it reached serious proportions. The rabbis also forbade procreation during the years of famine.

Thomas Malthus

• Malthus has become widely known for his theories about population and its increase or decrease in response to various factors. The six editions of his An Essay on the Principle of Population, published from 1798 to 1826, observed that sooner or later population gets checked by famine and disease. He wrote in opposition to the popular view in 18th-century Europe that saw society as improving and in principle as perfectible. (p193 in global text)

A Malthusian catastropheMalthusian catastrophe (also phrased Malthusian check, Malthusian correction, Malthusian disaster, Malthusian fallacy, Malthusian nightmare, or Malthusian theory of population) was originally foreseen to be a forced return to subsistence-level conditions once population growth had outpaced agricultural production. Population and growth size has a negative impact on the environment (deforestation, soil degradation, desertification due to unsustainable development). Later formulations consider economic growth limits as well. The term is also commonly used in discussions of oil depletion.

An August 2007 science review in The New York Times raised the claim that the Industrial Revolution had enabled the modern world to break outbreak out of the Malthusian growth model, while a front page Wall Street Journal article in March 2008 pointed out various limited resources which may soon limit human population growth because of a widespread belief in the importance of prosperity for every individual and the rising consumption trends of large developing nations such as China and India.

Food sources grow arithmeticallyarithmetically. Population growth is exponentialexponential. Thus, the world’s carrying capacitycarrying capacity will ultimately be depleted and lead to scarcity, war, famine, conquest and disease. SOUND FAMILIAR?

CANADA’S PEACEKEEPING SHAME

• The Somalia Affair was a 1993 military scandal later dubbed "Canada's national shame". It peaked with the brutal beating death of a Somali teenager at the hands of two Canadian soldiers participating in humanitarian efforts in Somalia. The crime, documented by grisly photos, shocked the Canadian public and brought to light internal problems in the Canadian Airborne Regiment. Military leadership came into sharp rebuke after a CBC reporter received altered documents, leading to allegations of a cover up.

• Eventually a public inquiry was called. Despite being controversially cut short by the government, the Somalia Inquiry cited problems in the leadership of the Canadian Forces. The affair led to the disbanding of Canada's elite Canadian Airborne Regiment, greatly damaging the morale of the Canadian Forces, and marring the domestic and international reputation of Canadian soldiers. It also led to the immediate reduction of Canadian military spending by nearly 25% from the time of the killing to the inquiry
