Page 2: FANCINE - Issue #1

From paperbacks to the big screen, popular movie franchise, The Hunger Games, inspired a massive cult following online. Critics attribute its major success due to a few key factors, namely its realism and the strong cast of characters. The book-turned-movie introduced the dystopian fantasy and post-apocalyptic setting where, instead of a bright, futurist, technology-savvy society, individuals have to survive in a desolate, war-torn land.

In this three-part series, the story follows a young girl thrust into the limelight, who, unwillingly, becomes a face and then, subsequently, the symbol of rebellion. The story introduces us to complex web of politics, power struggles, humanity’s capability for both destruction and creation, interspersed with tragic romance and laced heavily with an air of cloying desperation. A coming-of-age story that scoffs at the idea of the popular “naive childhood and awkward preteen years” cliche, Suzanne Collins’ grim take on the future has no room for the weak and flighty.

Page 5: FANCINE - Issue #1

Established in the post-apocalyptic America, the country of Panem was built on a foundation of subservience. The 13 small states of Panem, known as Districts, provide the small group of elite in the Capitol with natural resources procured through labour. In addition, children (hailing from the districts) aged 12 to 18 are required to participate in an annual reaping, where tributes of the yearly Hunger Games are chosen. The provisional system of entertainment further serves to emphasise the great divide between the Capitol and the Districts. Prior to the rebellion fronted by Katniss Everdeen, there was an attempt to overthrow the current authoritarian-totalitarian government. To dissuade future dissendents, Panem et circenses, an adage used by the dictatorial President Snow, was implemented.

Cressida is a resident director from the Capitol who joined the rebellion along with her camera crew, Castor and Pollux, and her assistant Messalla, and headed to District 13 when they fled the Capitol. Cressida was told by Plutarch Heavensbee to follow Katniss Everdeen throughout her journeys in the rebellion so they could make numerous propos across Panem in order to encourage

strength and morale in the rebels.

Cressida is introduced as “one of the most up-and-coming director in the Capitol”, then Cressida replies with “until [she] up and left.” She along with her assistants Castor, Pollux, and Messalla, are introduced with her. The 4 of them tell Katniss that they left the Capitol by choice to join the Mockingly

in District 13.07

THE MAINCHARACTERS

Page 9: FANCINE - Issue #1

Katniss Everdeen, the Girl on Fire. She is the main protagonist and the narrator of the Hunger Games trilogy. After her younger sister, Primrose, was reaped to participate in the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss volunteered to take her place as the female tribute from District 12.

Gale Hawthorne, the Soldier. He is Katniss Everdeen’s best friend. He is fiercely devoted to his family and to Katniss and is a true rebel and visionary at heart. He is in love with Katniss and is forced to watch as she volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games in the place of her sister and fakes a romance with Peeta Mellark in order to stay alive.

Primrose Everdeen, the Little Duck. She was Katniss Everdeen’s younger sister. Unlike her sister, Prim was the opposite of Katniss in both looks and character. She also had a cat named Buttercup. Katniss cares about Prim above anything else in the world, and when Prim is killed in Mockingjay she is devastated to the point that she loses her

voice temporarily.

Peeta Mellark, the Boy with the Bread. He, a baker’s son from District 12, is one of the main characters of the The Hunger Games trilogy. He is a very compassionate person and is good with words. He has been in love with Katniss Everdeen since the age of 5, but never confessed his feelings until he was reaped alongside her for the 74th Hunger

Games.

other characters

Caesar Flickerman, Master of Ceremonies

Caesar Flickerman is the host for the Hunger Games. He is famous for turning any conversation around for the positive, and is known to change the color of his lips, hair, and eyelids for each Hunger Games. He has been doing interviews for over 35 years, and according to Katniss he remained

virtually the same.

Johanna Mason,Fear her Axe!

Johanna Mason is a female victor of the 71st Hunger Games from District 7. She was reaped for the third Quarter Quell. She was the youngest tribute in the Quarter Quell, being 21. She is the last living victor of District 7 at the end of the trilogy. Johanna pretended to be a weakling, feigning hunger and fatigue when in reality, she was sly and cunning.

President Snow,The Viper Tongue

President Snow was the ruthless and tyrannical president of Panem. He is the main antagonist of The Hunger Games trilogy. Coriolanus Snow is a native of the Capitol and is the tyrannical and ruthless President of Panem. Although carrying the title of President, it is unknown if he was elected to the position democratically.

Finnick Odair,the Beloved Victor

Finnick Odair was a male victor from District 4. He won the 65th Hunger Games at the age 14 and was later one of the survivors of the 3rd Quarter Quell. He was the husband of Annie Cresta and father of their son. Finnick died during the second rebellion. As a Career tribute, Finnick won the 65th Hunger Games at the age of 14, where he was mentored by the previous District 4

victor, Mags.10

Page 11: FANCINE - Issue #1

Haymitch Abernathy, the Lonely Victor

Haymitch was the only living Hunger Games victor from District 12, having won the second Quarter Quell, before Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark won the 74th Hunger Games under his mentorship. He worked secretly in tandem with District 13 and other victors in order to incite the second rebellion, and was the main drive behind the rebel plot during the

75th Hunger Games.

Cinna,the Best Stylist

He was Katniss Everdeen’s stylist during her campaigns through the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, as well as a supporter of the rebels in District 13. Little is known about Cinna’s background, He rose through the ranks of the Capitol to become a stylist for the tributes of the Hunger Games. His role as a double agent implies that he was a trusted member of District 13 who sought to undermine

Panem’s regime.

Effie Trinket,the Capitol Escort

Effie Trinket is the escort of the District 12 tributes, including Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. By the end of Mockingjay, she is the only Escort from the 74th and 75th Hunger Games alive after the rebellion. She is first introduced in the first book and film and appear to be very posh like many other Capitol residents. However, throughout the series she grows more

emotionally.

Alma Coin,the President

President Alma Coin was the president of District 13 and the leader of the rebellion against the Capitol by the people of the districts of Panem. While President Snow is still the antagonist of the series, she is the hidden but true main antagonist of Mockingjay. She was first introduced when Katniss Everdeen met her in District 13. Katniss soon realized that Coin only wanted revenge on

the Capitol.11

Page 12: FANCINE - Issue #1

MAGS, the Oldest Mentor.

Mags was the female tribute from District 4 during the 75th Hunger Games, for which she volunteered for Annie Cresta. She was also the

victor of the 11th Hunger Games.

RUE, the Little Mockingjay.

She was the 12-year-old female tribute from District 11 who was selected to participate in the 74th Hunger Games. Rue had formed an alliance with Katniss after warning her about a nest of tracker jackers. Rue decided to trust Katniss partly because of the pin she wore over her heart, the famous mockingjay pin.

THE QUARTER QUELL.

Every 25 years there is a Quarter Quell edition of the Hunger Games. Quells mark the anniversaries of the districts’ defeat by the Capitol, and include special celebrations. The Games involves some sort of twist that makes them even more disastrous or

difficult to compete in, or watch.

THEGAMES

Page 13: FANCINE - Issue #1

THE REAPING.

The reaping is an annual event that takes place in every district before each Hunger Games, where the tributes of the upcoming Games are chosen. Each district’s escort randomly chooses the name of one male and one female tribute from two separate glass balls. Those picked are then the official

tributes for the upcoming Games. To be qualified for a reaping, one must be 12 years old.

THE INTERVIEWS.

The night before the start of each Hunger Games, Caesar Flickerman hosts an interview with each of the tributes. The tributes dress up so as to cause an impression on the Capitol. Caesar dressed with a suit, hair, lips, and eye color all the same color. In the 74th, it was blue, in the 73rd, it was crimson. Caesar asks them about their life back home, their time in the Capitol so far, their training score, and

the reaping. He is noted to try to help all the tributes through their interview.

THE TRIBUTE PARADE.

When entering the Training Center, tributes were required to enter via chariot rides that would show the audience what to expect from the competitors of each district. The chariots would be decorated according to which district they belonged to and their district’s industry. The chariot rides were very important because it was a chance for the tributes to make an impression on the citizens of the Capitol and potential sponsors.

THE GAMES.

The Hunger Games were a morbid and brutal competition which took place annually in the country of Panem. Every year, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 were selected from each of the twelve districts as tributes, who train for a week and then are sent into an outdoor arena to fight to the death. The event was nationally televised as mandatory viewing for all citizens. The last living tribute is declared the victor and is allowed to live in comfort back in their district.

13

Page 14: FANCINE - Issue #1

THE REBELLION

Page 15: FANCINE - Issue #1

SQUAD 451,

Squad 451, also known as the “Star Squad,” was formed to take down President Snow and the Capitol. The squad consisted of Katniss Everdeen, Gale Hawthorne, Finnick Odair, Jackson, Boggs, Homes, Leeg 1, Leeg 2, Mitchell and later, Peeta Mellark, who still had issues with his previous hijacking whilst the Squad was on its missions.

The Squad consists of 10 members: Katniss Everdeen, Gale Hawthorne, Finnick Odair, Jackson, Boggs, Homes, Mitchell, Leeg 1 & Leeg 2, Peeta and (Tigris). Accompanied by: Cressida, Messalla, Castor and Polux.

THE SECOND REBELLION.It began when rebels across the country backed by District 13 rose up in armed conflict against the Capitol’s military forces 75 years after The Dark Days. The leader of the second rebellion was officially President Alma Coin, but the rebellion itself began to gain momentum during the 74th Hunger Games when District 12 tributes Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark threatened to commit a double suicide. This caused Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane to let them both win, and which showed that they could overcome the power of the Capitol. The common symbol of defiance in the new group of rebels is Katniss’s mockingjay, a bird that the Capitol never intended to create. The rebel forces were presumably comprised of militia fighters from the revolting Districts, alongside better trained and equipped District 13 soldiers. The Capitol’s forces were primarily Peacekeepers, but they also utilized mutts to fight the rebels, and may have had other security forces.

HAYMITCH ABERNATHY

Haymitch is a former District 12 tribute and winner of the 50th Hunger Games, who is now a middle-aged drunk who hopes to drown the demons that torment him at the bottom of a bottle. Because he is the only living Hunger Games victor from District 12, he is forced to be mentor to both District 12 tributes every year for the games, teaching them everything he can to

heighten their chances of survival.

Katniss comes to realize in preparation for the 75th Games that she and Haymitch are more alike than ever thought before: both hate the games.

Gale Hawthorne is a seventeen year old male with dark hair and light eyes. He was born to his mother Hazelle and father, in District 12. He is the older sibling to his two brothers Rory and Vick and youngest sister Posy. His father died along side Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) in a mining accident when he was twelve years old. Gale and Katniss are best friends and hunt illegally together outside the boundaries of District 12. To support his family Gale often applies for tesserae which costs him his name to be entered into the reaping each time.

Gale ‘has a crush’ on Katniss.

Primrose “Prim” Everdeen is a twelve year old female with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was born in District 12 and is the younger sister of Katniss. Prim’s father died in a mining accident when she was very young. Katniss gave her a goat for her tenth birthday and named her named Lady, who she milks for food and money. She also saved a stray cat that she called Buttercup. Katniss attempted to take Prim hunting but she broke down into tears at the sight of a dying animal. Prim is an assistant to her mother who is the local healer - together they care for the sick

and wounded.

Katniss Everdeen is a sixteen year old female with dark hair, olive skin and grey eyes. She was born in District 12. She lives there with her younger sister Primrose and mother. Katniss’ father died in a mining accident when she was eleven years old. Katniss didn’t have many friends as a child. Gale Hawthor-ne is Katniss’ best friend whom is a year older than her. They met when their fa-thers died in the mining accident. They illegally hunt outside the boundaries of District 12 together. At first it was just to keep their families and themselves fed, now they temporarily leave the District to ‘take a step back/escape for a while’.

Peeta Mellark is a sixteen year old male with blond hair and ‘stocky’ bodyshape. He was born on the 11th of October in District 12. He lives there with his mother and father who own the district bakery, meaning he is part of the ‘wealthier’ category of his district. He spends his time decorating the goods at the bakery leading him to have exceptional artistry skills. He is expected to carry out heavy lifting (flour, wheat, etc) which therefore makes him substantially strong too. Peeta has been borderline abused by his mother his

whole life.

PEETA MELLARK

Effie works as the escort for District 12, particularly to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games trilogy. Her responsibilities include drawing Hunger Games tributes’ names at reapings and subsequently escorting the tributes to the Capitol. She is very well known for her Capitol accent, upbeat attitude for the Games and the Capitol phrase, “May the odds be ever in your favor!” Effie tries to encourage tributes to be happy about their upcoming participation in the Games,

though her efforts are mostly in vain.

CAESAR FLICKERMAN

Caesar Flickerman is the master of ceremonies and commentator for the Hunger Games. He has served as the master of ceremonies since the 50th Hunger Games. He also interviews each tribute on live television the night before the Games begin and is known to have an innate ability to relax a tribute’s fears so as to have a casual discussion with him or her. He is also known for wearing a different color of hair and suit for each Hunger Game, including a frightening blood-red color of hair used in the 73rd Hunger Games. In the movies, he is also

known for flashing a huge smile.

The trusted and loved stylist whose defiance against The Capitol goes unnoticed until a spectacular display during the 3rd Quarter Quell’s interview

of Katniss by Caesar Flickerman.

Styling a Mockingjay rendering of an outfit under a wedding gown that President Snow had personally chosen to have Katniss wear in her interview, Cinna’s true feelings about The Capitol become apparent, and suddenly you

become very afraid for him.

Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) was born in District 4, the ‘fishing’ district. He is tall, has bronze hair, tanned skin and green eyes. He is thought be be extremely handsome and pleasing to the eye. Finnick is flirtatious, charming and has a seductive purr to his voice. Annie

Cresta is the girl he loves.

Finnick was chosen at the age of fourteen to become the male tribute for his district, for The 65th Hunger Games. He was mentored by District 4 Victor, Mags whom he becomes very close with and treat each other like family. After his victory, Finnick was forced into

prostitution by President Snow.

Johanna Mason is a female victor of an unidentified Hunger Games from District 7. She was reaped for the third Quarter Quell. She was one of the youngest tributes in the Quarter Quell. She is the last living victor of District 7 at the end of the “Hunger Games” series. Johanna first meets Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark before the opening ceremonies of the 75th Hunger Games. After the Arena was destroyed from the inside by Katniss’ bow and Beetee’s electric wire, Finnick Odair, Beetee and Katniss were rescued by District 13 and the Rebels. Johanna and Peeta were captured by

the Capitol along with Enobaria.

President Alma Coin was the President of District 13 and the leader of the rebe-llion against the Capitol by the people of the districts of Panem. While President Snow is still the antagonist of the series, she is the true antagonist of Mocking-jay. Coin is devious, unmoving, and will do whatever it takes to attain her goals. She was first introduced when Katniss Everdeen met her in District 13.Coin was presumably raised in, and served as the leader of District 13 and the re-

bellion.

Snow is a native of the Capitol and is the tyrannical President of Panem. Although carrying the title of President, it is unknown if he was elected to the position democratically. Snow possesses total power in Panem’s government and has proven to be a cruel and manipulative dictator, ruling over the Capitol and its contained districts. He also works on the annual Hunger Games and heads the military responsible for oppressing the districts. He has no qualms about using intimidation in pursuit of his agenda, such as when he threatened to kill Katniss Everdeen, Gale Hawthorne,

Peeta Mellark, and their families.
