About the MusicFanfare and Fireworks is a dramatic concert opener or closer designed to be performed by concert band andstrings; however, it can also be performed by concert band alone. Although playable by band alone or bandand strings, the piece does not follow a traditional flexible instrumentation setup. Strings do not just doubleband parts - in fact, they are featured at times (and these parts are cued in the winds when necessary). By taking this approach, the textures and available colors are much richer and more diverse than a typicalflexible instrumentation piece often allows. So whether you play this with band, band with a few strings, or bandwith a full string orchestra, the piece will work equally well.
This is also an excellent opportunity to let young band musicians explore the brighter tonality of C Major,though the piece does not reside in that key the entire time and avoids problematic notes in certain instruments.It also serves as a wonderful vehicle to teach low 1 and 2 fingerings to string players (again, limited).Whenever possible, strings tend to cover notes idiomatic to their instruments while the winds tend to the same.The result is an extremely vibrant and interesting harmonic vocabulary that sounds much more difficult toplay than it actually is. As a plus – if you are considering this as a finale to a concert but cannot have groupsrehearse together until a day or two prior, the piece has been specifically designed to come together quickly.There are no tempo changes and all rhythms are simple and straightforward.
Fanfare and Fireworks was commissioned by the Parkland School District (Allentown, Pennsylvania) for their 5th Grade Combined Band and Orchestra. The staff includes Patti Bartolacci and Laura Crouthamel (strings);Laura Kemmerer, Kay Mancke, and Mark Syslo (band); and Scott Watson (band/program coordinator). It was premiered by approximately 330 students (225 in band and 110 in strings).
The ComposerBrian Balmages (b. 1975) is an award-winning composer, conductor, producer, andperformer. He received his bachelor's degree in music from James Madison Universityand his master’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida. Mr. Balmages’ compositions have been performed worldwide at conferences including the CollegeBand Directors National Conference, the Midwest Clinic, American String TeachersAssociation National Conference, and the international trumpet, horn, trombone andtuba/euphonium conferences. His active schedule of commissions and premiereshas incorporated groups ranging from elementary schools to professional ensembles,including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Symphony Orchestra, theUniversity of Miami Wind Ensemble, Boston Brass, members of the United StatesMarine Band, and the Dominion Brass Ensemble. His music has been performed bymembers of leading orchestras throughout the country and he has enjoyed worldpremieres and performances in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and theKennedy Center, as well as performances at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
As a conductor, Mr. Balmages enjoys engagements with numerous all-state and regional honor bands andorchestras along with university and professional groups. Notable guest conducting appearances have includedthe Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, College Band Directors Eastern Regional Conference,and MENC. Additional conducting appearances have included the Kennedy Center and Meyerhoff SymphonyHall. He has also served as an adjunct professor of instrumental conducting and Acting Symphonic BandDirector at Towson University in Maryland.
Currently, Mr. Balmages is the Director of Instrumental Publications for The FJH Music Company Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He resides in Baltimore with his wife, Lisa, and their sons, Jacob and Collin.
