Welcome Mark Wilkinson

Principal Cornet & Band Manager

Dear Patrons,

Welcome to the Summer 'Foden's Fanfare', as always we have tried to make the magazine as interesting

as possible including news since the start of this year and forthcoming events, updates on our various

youth educational work, reviews, player profiles and much more.

We have had an exciting mix of concerts and recordings since the start of this year as well as victories

at the North West Brass Band Area Contest (where we will now represent the area at the National Finals

in the Royal Albert Hall in October) and Tameside Whit Friday March contest (for the 16th time in 17

years)

Concert appearances have seen the band visit

Armagh, Isle of Man and Denmark as well as

events stretching between Newton Stewart

(Scotland) and London. Since the start of this

year we have performed in 19 public

appearances, 2 contests and 2 CD

recordings. As well as this, we have

performed live on BBC Radio 2 and appeared

in concerts with our fantastic Youth and Junior

Bands who are both sounding better than

ever!!!

Following last years successful appearance

with Matt Ford, the band recorded a Christmas

CD in April and look forward to a number of

concerts with Matt later in the year. The CD

will be available to purchase in October but

the band are taking pre-orders at a discounted price (please see advert in this magazine). The first edits

of the CD sound fantastic!

The bands 'Heritage Project' (previously reported) is gaining momentum and the project will be

completed in March '18 where all the bands various historical artefacts, documents, recordings and

information will be available to view online (free of charge) via a new 'Heritage Website' currently under

construction. 2018 also sees a number of exciting events through our Arts Council funding which

includes a concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary since the death of Edwin Firth. More

information to follow.

We are always looking at recruiting new Patrons and are offering a special offer of £5 in the first year to

new Patrons. A membership form is included in the magazine if you could please encourage any family

members / friends to join.

Thank you for your continued support and hope to see you at some of our events this year

SANDBACH MARKS FODEN’S HOME WITH NEW TOWN SIGNS

For over 100 years the market town of Sandbach in

Cheshire has been the home of Foden’s Band.

Originally formed by the founders of the Foden’s

Motor Works the band has survived long after the

trucks have stopped rolling off the productions line,

proudly flying the flag for our home town in concerts

and competitions throughout the UK and abroad.

The band are proud of their relationship with the

town, and regularly perform in Sandbach taking

centre stage at key local events such as the famous

Transport Festival in April and the now annual Party

in the Park as well as a series of concerts at the

Town Hall and Boys School.

To mark this historic relationship, the Sandbach

Town Council have unveiled a series of new town

signs at which proudly informs visitors that it is the home of the world famous Foden’s Band. The signs

can be found on all major roads leading into the town.

ANNA HUGHES-WILLIAMS AWARDED ‘MORTIMER MEDAL’ FOR SERVICES TO BRASS BANDS

Foden's band are extremely proud that one of their members has

been awarded the 'Mortimer Medal' for recognition of their services to

the teaching of young brass musicians.

Anna Hughes-Williams has an association with Foden's that stretches

back over three tenures to 1989.

The announcement was made by Philip Morris, the Chairman of the

Brass Band Committee of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, who

stated that the award was due to her 'outstanding contribution and

immensely valuable work with young brass musicians'.

Speaking about the announcement Anna commented 'I am extremely

proud to be awarded this prestigious award and having the pleasure

to work with all these dedicated, hard working, talented young people

from my time with Bolton Junior and Youth Band, St Helen's Youth

FODEN’S ARE TAMESIDE WHIT FRIDAY CHAMPIONS FOR 16TH TIME IN 17 YEARS

In May, the traditional Whit Friday March

Competitions took place in Tameside and

Saddleworth, seeing bands from all over the world

travel to the event known as ’the greatest free

show on earth’.

Fodens, directed by Musical Director Michael

Fowles, concentrated their efforts on the Tameside

area — competing in all 12 villages. Performing

William German’s March ’The President’, the band

claimed 8 1st prizes which gave them a clear win in

the overall Tameside area championship.

This year now means Foden’s have recorded 16 overall Tameside victories in the last 17 years.

Community

/ Youth Ian Raisbeck — 2nd Cornet &

Youth Band Co-ordinator

As ever, the band are busy in many different areas. In addition to the numerous concerts the band

gives, we are increasingly in demand to provide workshops and masterclasses for other bands as well as

the regular commitments we maintain in developing our own Youth and Junior Bands, the Foden’s Solo

Contest and the plans for a new Foden’s Youth Festival.

Sandbach Performances

Once again, the band paraded through the streets

in April at the annual Sandbach Transport Festival.

The event, which attracts around 20,000 visitors,

celebrated the towns heritage and the band

perform annually to the assembled crowds as well

as the parade through the streets.

Later, in July, the band led the Sandbach ’Party in

the Park’. This now annual event, which also

featured the Sandbach School Big Band and a

firework finale, has grown in popularity over the

past few years. With the audience embracing the

’Last Night of the Proms’ theme complete with flags

and singing the evening has become a highlight of

the annual calendar in Sandbach.

As ever, the band are extremely grateful to Sandbach Town Council for their ongoing support and are

proud to represent Sandbach when travelling the country.

Foden’s Youth & Junior Bands

We were delighted that, in June 2017, there was a repeat of last years concert featuring

Foden’s, Foden’s Youth Band & Foden’s Junior Band at Warrington’s Parr Hall. This

event, organised by Accent Music Hub, gave our organisation the chance to showcase

around 120 musicians on stage, all representing the Foden’s name. A review of the

event can be read later in this edition.

Other exciting plans are being made to create the first ever UK Youth Festival for Youth

Brass Bands. The event, taking place in October 2017, will feature our own Youth Band’s

as well as some of the UKs finest Youth Music organisations and the Brass Band

movements most inspirational leaders. Plans are already moving forward for an exciting

day filled with performances, masterclasses and workshops and such is the interest in an

event of this importance, discussions have taken place with major UK conservatoires

about hosting the event in 2018 and 2019. The festival is part of the 3 Year Strategic

Plan funded by the Arts Council.

We hope that this will enable us to build on the reputation we have developed through

our Youth Bands, workshops delivered and the highly acclaimed Solo, Duet & Quartet

Contest which has become the biggest in the country.

Denmark 2017 Mark Bousie — 2nd Euphonium

The musicians of Foden’s Band played a significant part at this year’s Aalborg Musikkonkurrence, Denmark’s leading entertainment competition: on the Saturday, John Barber, Mark Bousie, Michael Fowles and Mark Wilkinson all served as adjudicators for the event’s four sections and, on the same evening, the band played a very well received pre-results ‘mini concert’ to an extremely enthusiastic capacity audience. The following day Foden’s returned to perform a full concert at the auditorium of the Norresundby Gymnasium and the audience was again treated to some world class brass playing of a most varied and contrasting programme.

Foden’s opened their performance with the ‘Grand Fanfare’ by Venezuelan composer, Giancarlo Castro D’Addona. Bristling with infectious rhythms and sweeping melodic lines, the Fanfare made a wonderful celebratory start to the concert and showed Foden’s to be in excellent form.

In stark contrast, the band and Michael Fowles then gave a most moving interpretation of one of Wilfred Heaton’s miniature masterpieces, his hymn tune setting, ‘Just as I Am’. Again, the band shifted easily into a different stylistic world, featuring their recently appointed Principal Euphonium, Gary Curtin in Stan Niewenhuis’s exhilarating work ‘Move Their Mind’. The piece contrasts extended lyrical episodes with virtuosic sections in a funk style, including clever use of multiphonics and showed why Gary has become one of the world’s leading performers on his instrument.

To finish the first half of the concert Foden’s gave an eagerly awaited performance of a work that has very quickly become a modern masterpiece of the brass band repertoire, Thierry Deleruyelle’s ‘Fraternity’. The band’s soloists were all on top form, in particular Principal Cornet, Mark Wilkinson in his delivery of the challenging cornet cadenza and the whole ensemble tackled the work’s technical challenges in thrilling fashion. However, it was the climax of the work, the ‘Fraternity Hymn’, which provided the highlight of the whole concert. Great credit must be given to Michael Fowles for his reading and pacing of this piece, which will make a wonderful test piece for the British Open in September. On this kind of form, Foden’s will be a band to listen out for.

If the nature of the first half of the concert was quite serious, then the second half featured the lighter side of Foden’s repertoire, opening with a slick performance of Leigh Baker’s popular arrangement of the Lionel Ritchie classic ‘All Night Long’. This was the prelude to a thrillingly stylish performance by the band’s soprano cornet soloist, Richard Poole, of ‘Blue’ by Mnozil Brass’s Thomas Gansch which brought the house down. Foden’s new Principal Horn, Jonathan Bates, then demonstrated why his playing is held in such high esteem with an extremely fluent and sonorous performance of Mangione’s ‘Children of Sanchez’ and the band’s Flugel Horn soloist, Melanie Whyle followed the flamboyance of the previous two numbers with a beautifully understated interpretation of Eric Whitacre’s ‘The Seal Lullaby’. Foden’s and Michael Fowles then took the audience to the world of rock with an arrangement of ‘Supremacy’ by the English band Muse. With its dramatic ‘James Bond’ undertones, the song suits the sonorities of the brass band well. John Barber, Foden’s Principal Trombone, was the last soloist of the concert. He gave a most stylish and lyrical performance of his own arrangement of the ballad ‘Someone Like You’ from the musical ‘Jekyll and Hyde’.

Foden’s concluded the official part of the second half with an exciting performance of a new version of ‘A Farewell to Arms’, a work originally written for the European ‘Fanfare’ ensemble by the Dutch composer Harrie Janssen. The audience, who were thrilled to have heard one of the world’s top brass bands, were never going to allow Foden’s to leave the stage without an encore and the band obliged with two: Prima’s swing classic ‘Sing Sing Sing’ and Ray Farr’s upbeat version of Bach’s ‘Toccata in D Minor’. The band finally left the stage with the cheers of the audience ringing in their ears.

BSharp Cleaning Ian Hill — Founder BSharp Cleaning Products

Repclif Chemical Services Ltd is a local chemical blending company based in Crewe. We have been trading since 1971 and have developed products for and worked with companies such as Portaloo, Rowenta, Lakeland, Bentley and Mercedes Benz. In 2015 a conversation in a pub about cleaning a tuba ended up with the current Sales Manager Ian Hill joining the company and developing the Virtuoso Brass Instrument Cleaning Kit and the b# brand was born.

We were helped along the way by Mick Rath from Michael Rath Trombones and Paul Riggett from Sterling Instruments, who gave us advice and trialled the product, as well as a huge amount of help from Mark Wilkinson and Brett Baker. The cleaning kit was robustly trialled and tested, including field trials with the Foden’s Youth Band until the perfect product was formulated. This resulted in the world’s first dedicated brass instrument cleaning kit made by brass players for brass players. This was launched at the North West Regional Championships in 2016.

The kit consists of –

• A uniquely formulated Instrument Soak to bathe your instrument in. This soak is designed to loosen & remove the biofilm build up in your pipework, notorious for harbouring germs and bacteria, whilst degreasing the valves and slides allowing you to apply fresh oils. Our formula is non corrosive & pH neutral so is safe on all forms of plate and lacquer finishes. It also includes an anti-static agent to aid dust & water repellency and for easy next time cleaning, leaving your instrument with a pleasant clean citrus fragrance.

• A new formula Finishing Polish made from natural Avocado oil, to create that “good as new shine” to your instrument for that perfect concert look. This polish also has a built in anti-static agent to aid dust and water repellency ensuring it looks at its best for longer.

• A set of quality bespoke “Helin” instrument cleaning brushes and polishing cloth. Helin is the leading brand in instrument cleaning products.

During the development process, Mark became increasingly interested, so much so after it fixed his sticky valve problem, he asked if he could personally endorse the brand.

Moreover, after discussions, Fodens Band also decided they would also become endorsees saying; ‘as one of the World’s leading Brass Bands, Fodens Band aspires for perfection. Players are encouraged to regularly maintain instruments to ensure pitch perfect performances and pristine appearance. Not only does the b# kit help to stop sticky valves & slides, but it helps to keep the inside as clean as the outside. We were especially pleased that thought has gone into proving a quality brush kit alongside the soak and polish making it a world class cleaning kit’. This along with Brett’s endorsement, gave the b# brand huge credibility and increased customer confidence.

We are working very closely with Brass Bands England to promote healthy playing and in 2017, sponsored the soloist prizes at the National Youth Championships. Qualkem and the b# brand are proud to be partners of Foden’s Band.

For more information about b# products go to www.bsharpbrass.com or find us on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.

Player Focus

Nick Birch — 2nd Trombone

This month we meet 2nd Trombone player Nick Birch…

Tell us a little about your background as a Musician.

I started off playing the Baritone from the age of 3 and joined Audley Brass at the age of 9, conducted by my father, Kevin. After a few years I ended up in the Solo Euphonium chair before moving to United Co-op (Crewe) on 2nd Baritone. Interestingly at both of these band I went straight from 2nd Baritone to the Solo Euphonium Seat.

I started playing Trombone whilst at Sandbach School after being persuaded by my Head of Music John Barber, who I'm now very lucky to sit next to in Foden's. I graduated last year from the Royal Northern College of Music completing my Masters on Trombone, having previously completed my undergraduate on Euphonium.

How did you come to join Foden's?

I had never played Trombone full time in a brass band before joining Foden's. I was playing for Fairey's on 2nd Euphonium before deciding to take a break to concentrate on my Trombone playing. After 6 months, I was asked to do the National Finals in 2015 and the temptation to join my hometown band was just too strong.

What is your favourite part of playing for Foden's Band?

Being born in Sandbach meant that I had always had the ambition to play for Foden's, and to now perform alongside a few of the people that I have watched growing up is amazing. I'm really enjoying the projects that we are undertaking with the band at the moment, such as the concerts with Matt Ford and Mike Lovett.

What have been the highlights of your musical career so far?

Last year, I performed at the International Trombone Festival at the Julliard School in New York as part of the RNCM Trombone Choir, and also got to hear some of the best Trombone playing I will probably ever hear. My best brass band performances have been the concert at Regent Hall last, before the Nationals, particularly playing Kingdom Triumphant and also performing at Tate Britain with Acid Brass.

Do you have any aspirations for the future?

The aim with Foden's has to be to win the British Open and the Nationals. Personally I would like to do more education projects and eventually conduct a contesting band.

What does your day-to-day job involve?

For the majority of my time I teach for the Love Music Trust around Cheshire East. I also have been the Musical Director with Nantwich Concert Band for the last 3 years and enjoy seeing that developing into strong community music ensemble.

What do you enjoy doing when you have time off work and band?

I enjoy following Cricket and Football, and try to go and watch Crewe Alex when time allows.

Review:

‘Foden’s Spectacular’

For the second year in succession, the burgeoning, combined forces of the Foden’s Band organisation performed a matinee springtime concert in the beautiful acoustic of Warrington’s grand Parr Hall to a large audience.

Following on from a successful Whit Friday the previous night Foden’s, under the trusty baton of guest conductor, David Hirst, took to the stage for the first half, delivering a programme consisting of a number of the band’s most popular current concert repertoire. Starting with ‘Supremacy’ a recent transcription from rock supergroup ‘Muse’, Foden’s moved slickly and stylishly through numbers by Lionel Ritchie, Shostakovich, Wilfred Heaton and finished in gloriously sonorous fashion with Eric Ball’s magnificent classic, ‘The Kingdom Triumphant’. Interspersing these items were two expertly delivered solos, given by Principal Cornet, Mark Wilkinson (‘I Dreamed a Dream’) and Principal Percussionist, Mark Landon (‘Xylomania’). The audience wouldn’t let the band depart the stage without an encore, and this it duly delivered with Ray Farr’s thrilling arrangement of Bach’s ‘Toccata in D Minor’.

The second half was dedicated to the talented young musicians of the Foden’s Youth and Junior Bands.

The 60-strong Foden’s Youth Band (in association with the Love Music Trust), now in its fifth season and conducted by co-Musical Director Mark Bousie, performed first, starting the second half in spectacular fashion with Foden’s Principal Horn, Jonathan Bates’ arrangement of ‘Olympiada’ by American composer, Samuel Hazo.

The rest of the Youth Band’s programme was dedicated to the music of Goff Richards, a long time resident of Warrington, who passed away in 2011. The energetic and exciting ‘Doyen’ was given a welcome revival and this was followed with the band maturely accompanying Foden’s Principal Euphonium, Gary Curtin, as he majestically soared the heights in Richards’ ‘Pilatus’, dedicated to the Swiss Alps. The band ended its set in sonorous style with the Cornish born composer’s classic arrangement of the hymn tune ‘Crimond’. Throughout, the band was excellently led by its Principal Cornet, Georgina Moulsdale, who ‘retires’ from the ensemble this summer after a number of years.

The final of the Foden’s bands to entertain the large audience was the youngest of the groups, in more than one way. Foden’s Junior Band, formed in 2015, which is run in association with the Warrington based Accent Music Education Hub and consists of 25 members, gave a wonderfully entertaining programme, showing just how far the young members have progressed in a short space of time. In the absence of regular Musical Director, Anna Hughes-Williams, the Junior Band were extremely ably led by Foden’s Flugel Horn player, Melanie Whyle. Highlights of the band’s programme included ‘The Circle of Life’ from ‘The Lion King’ (complete with costume and choreography) and the Queen classic ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’.

To conclude the concert, over 100 players from all three of the Foden’s Band filled the large space of the Parr Hall stage and filled the large acoustic of the hall with a sound that only massed brass bands can produce in Dizzy Stratford’s ‘Glasnost’.

The afternoon was an exhibition of how the whole Foden’s organisation continues to go from strength and strength, and in particular, offers young musicians wonderful opportunities.

The annual Patrons Concert took place in February 2017 with additional significance, the society celebrating it’s 30th anniversary in 2017.

As ever, Patrons travelled great distances to be at this special event which the band put on to thank its loyal supporters. Some things may have changed over the past 30 years, but many have not. In exchange for the annual donations, the band plays the annual Patrons Concert for members at Sandbach School during February of each year. Something else which has remained a constant; Neil Barnett - who has now introduced the band every year since it’s formation in 1987.

A more recent tradition, the release of the ’Patrons Choice’ CD. The disc has become an annual record of the concert repertoire performed by Foden’s throughout the year and this year, Patrons Choice X was released at the concert.

The band also give out it’s own annual awards at the Patrons Concert. The awards, voted for by the players in the band, recognise the ’Player of the Year’ (for outstanding performance levels on stage at concerts and competitions) and ’Bandsman of the Year’ (for outstanding contribution to the running of the band).

This years player of the year was awarded to Melanie Whyle. For several years, Mel was a member of the Cornet section but in 2016 she accepted the switch to the Flugel Horn chair.

After several stunning performances, including an outstanding contribution to the National Finals performance at Royal Albert Hall she has now established herself as a bright star of the future.

The bandsman of the year was awarded to Andy Rolfe.

Andy is a member of the Cornet section and for many years, has been the hardworking secretary of the band and committee member. Over the past year, Andy has worked tirelessly to assist with the recovery of the band following the bandroom fire in April 2016 and was instrumental in securing new rehearsal facilities. In addition, Andy has overseen several adjustments to the management structure of the band including the change to Limited Company with Chartable Status as well as liaising with many of the bands partner organisations and business which secures the bands future.

All at Foden’s are very proud of the Patrons Society and the annual concert. We hope that in another 40 years we will still be celebrating the societies support for the band. If you know anybody who may be interested in becoming a Patron, they can now benefit from a special new member donation of £5 for their first year.
