On Thursday, April 17th, 2008, Fanshawe College hosted the TD Canada Trust Business Plan Challenge, a contest for students of the Small Business program.

Over 300 students teamed up to present business ventures to an expert panel of judges from TD Canada Trust. The winning teams were judged on presentation, viability, marketability and financial analysis.

“The TD Canada Trust partnership is a unique opportunity for Fanshawe Business students to work with community partners to bring ‘real world learning’ to the classroom,” said Mary Pierce, Chair of the School of Business & Management.

The challenge was sponsored by TD Canada Trust Small Business Banking from the Western Ontario region and coordinated by Fanshawe’s Faculty from the School of Business and Management.

“The competition is a great way to encourage students to consider future careers as entrepreneurs,” said Christian Connolly, Area Manager, Business Banking, TD Canada Trust. “It’s a chance to demonstrate the rewards of a good business plan backed by sound business concepts. As the majority of new jobs in Canada are created by small businesses, we feel it is essential that we inspire future entrepreneurs.”

Fanshawe College is one of three Canadian Colleges to receive an Endowed Bursary Fund from The Princess Auto Foundation headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The provincial government will match the generous gift through the provisions of the Ontario Trust for Student Support.

Recognizing a need for leadership in supporting students who are enrolled in education for skilled trades, The Princess Auto Foundation is a strong advocate for the quality of education and skills training.

This meaningful new bursary will be awarded beginning in the 2008-2009 school year to a full time student in the Transportation and Motive Power program who demonstrates financial need combined with high academic performance.

Princess Auto is a Canadian retailer offering mail order service and manufacturing of comprehensive hardgoods to customers in rural, industrial and urban markets across Canada.

Students from Fanshawe’s Fashion Design program recently made a special gift for cancer patients in the London area. In response to a challenge to “Pass the Torch” from the Toronto office of Union Gas / Spectra Energy, the students created over 60 pink velour wraps to provide comfort and warmth to cancer patients. The wraps were donated to Wellspring London and Region who will distribute them to their members, individuals and families dealing with cancer.

Each of the wraps included a note reading:

A pessimist sees the glass as half empty. An optimist sees the glass as half full.A volunteer looks at the same glass &

finds someone who is thirsty.

May this wrap bring you a comforting hug.Compliments of Fanshawe College Fashion

Enthusiastic golfers and generous supporters of the 6th Annual Fanshawe Golf Classic are stepping up to ensure that many more Fanshawe College students can realize their dreams for a post-secondary education.

Proceeds from the tournament will support student awards and bursaries and since our inaugural tournament in 2003, the College has raised over $275,000!

There are many opportunities for you to participate in this wonderful event to be held at London’s Sunningdale Golf & Country Club on Tuesday, August 19, 2008. If you would like to play golf, sponsor a hole or activity, or donate silent auction or prize items, we’d love to hear from you.

For information on how to register for the 2008 Golf Classic, please visit the Fanshawe College website (www.fanshawec.ca) or contact Linda Branderhorst at (519) 452-4430 ext. 4750. Your support will really make a difference!

A long time partner with Fanshawe’s Building Technology division, industry leader EllisDon Corporation is looking to the future with a workforce trained by Fanshawe College.

On campus recently to make a leadership donation from the EllisDon Corporation were Brian Waltham, Vice President Southwestern Ontario (and Fanshawe grad); Chief Financial Officer, John Bernhardt; and Gord Rolleston, Manager of Design and Build.

In making the gift, Brian Waltham said that EllisDon was honoured to partner with Fanshawe. “We are privileged to contribute to worthy causes. We believe in partnerships with our customers. The community partners with colleges within a region, and we believe those partnerships are a strength of a community”.

The generous gift of $50,000 in support of the construction lab meets the mandates of both organizations and provides Fanshawe students with the most current learning materials and resources available.

Participating at the event along with Howard Rundle, President, was Matthew Black, a graduate of the Carpentry Apprenticeship program. Matthew thanked EllisDon on behalf of all the students involved and for the opportunity to be more marketable when looking for work in the construction field.

Fanshawe College’s reputation for excellence in teaching in the Business Insurance Program has resulted in the establishment of a new annual student award by the Toronto Insurance Conference.

The Toronto Insurance Conference Commercial Brokers Award will recognize a full-time 2nd year student who demonstrates a

keen interest in pursuing a career in the brokerage business and is experiencing good success as a student.

The Toronto Insurance Conference is a networking and advocacy organization that addresses the common concerns and issues of their membership. Even though they are based in Toronto, they will have a representative at the business and management award ceremony to present their award to a deserving recipient.

For Jan and Helen Novotny, a passion for education and a strong belief in helping the next generation of students are the reasons behind their recent planned gift, which will create a future endowed award fund at Fanshawe College.

The Novotny Scholarship Fund will encourage and motivate many future technology students and provide new opportunities with vision, determination, and innovation to Fanshawe College.

Jan reflects that when he first joined the staff of Fanshawe College in 1987, there were numerous media articles about the shortage of a technically trained workforce. Unfortunately, in the past 15 years, not much has changed and there are still reports of a growing shortage of skilled labour. As such, Jan and Helen have established a fund with their planned gift that will pay for the first year of tuition for a student enrolled in a technology-based program.

“It is important for us to leave something behind,” says Jan Novotny. “We want to inspire others to think about how they can make an impact on the future of our community and our country.” The Novotny’s gift demonstrates that they are committed to Fanshawe College where Jan worked and taught, and sets a positive example for faculty, staff, students, alumni and retirees.

Jan and Helen’s journey to Canada and eventually Fanshawe College was an adventurous one that started in their homeland of Czechoslovakia and led to Calgary, Deep River and Port Elgin before ultimately settling in London. However, it was their seven-year stay in Saudi Arabia that held the most excitement. In 1980, after working with Ontario Hydro and Bruce Power, Jan was offered a job overseeing a training centre for Aramco, the largest oil producing company in the world based in Saudi Arabia. For both, the opportunity to work with young people from all walks of life who were eager to learn was rewarding and exhilarating.

“It was a great social experiment,” says Jan. “I have always enjoyed passing along knowledge and information to others that I have gathered over time.”

When they returned to Canada in 1987, they purposely targeted medium-sized cities like London, Barrie and Ottawa. Jan was hired as the Chair of Continuing Education at Fanshawe College in what was then the Division of Technology. At that time, there were three employees and the department offered 200 part-time computer and technology courses. By the time he retired in 2005, there were over 25 employees and the course offerings had expanded significantly. For Jan, the most interesting element to working at the College was the interaction with students and exposure to a variety of different cultures.

Helen also developed her own affinity to Fanshawe College and enrolled in art and painting courses at the College for more than six years. Today, her love of painting continues with her work shown in local exhibitions and displayed in the home she shares with Jan.

According to Jan and Helen, “If you live in London, your path always crosses with Fanshawe College in one way or another.” Having the Novotny’s wholehearted support through the establishment of this generous planned gift to the College will indeed help the London region prosper and grow.
