GIAHS Dynamic Conservation Approach
Adaptive Management or Dynamic Conservation approach is based on the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) and Agroecological approaches, to explore and develop novel political, social and economic processes strengthening traditional management systems in order to conserve the biodiversity and cultural values of ecosystem. It emphasizes a balance between conservation, adaptation and socio-economic development in order for them to address the challenges of today’s world and let them to take advantage of the opportunities of modern living, while at the same time conserving the functionalities of the ecosystem.

Traditional agricultural systems provide as much as
20 to 40% of the
world’s food supply.
CulTIvATeD AreA of traditional rice
varieties in China’s GIAHS sites InCreASeD by
53% as a result of the GIAHS Initiative.
DID yOu knOw ?
The conversion of biodiversity and ecosystem goods
into marketable ecological products has increased
farmers income by approximately
60%
in CHInA’S GIAHS sites.
GIAHS are living, evolving systems, evolving culture, of human communities in an intricate relationship with their territory, cultural or agricultural landscapes or biophysical and wider social environments. Their way of life have continually adapted to the potentials and constraints of the social-ecological environments, and shaped the landscapes into remarkable and aesthetic beauty, accumulated wealth of knowledge and culture, and in the perpetuation of the biological diversity of global significance. GIAHS is not about the past, it is about the future!
The GIAHS Initiative in China have brought significant development in Qingtian, our government and local community have come to understand the value of our traditional rice fish culture and biodiversity. Agriculture is a way of our lives and to live in harmony with nature...
“Traditional rice fish provides us organic food products, which sells higher than non-organic, and making our annual higher than before. We continue enjoying our agri-culture, our way of life, and more, importantly, have diverse, nutritious foods in our table every day.”
– Mrs Lizhen Wu, Longxian Village, Qingtian.
