Farah Naz, Graduate Engineer, Property Systems, Gifford(London)

In her daily 26 minute commute from Gifford’s London office to the relativepeace of Bromley, Farah has just enough time to change her mindset fromthinking about sustainable building design to thinking about…..sustainablebuilding design. To say she lives and breathes her work is an understatement.

And she’s absolutely clear about the contribution she wants to make. “There’s agap between the way architects and engineers approach building design,” saysFarah. Having seen this phenomena in Asia, America and Europe (she’sworked and studied in Dhaka, Boston and London) she says she wants to try to“blend the gap” between the two professional objectives; design aesthetics andfunctionality.

“Sustainability shouldn’t be a buzzword or afterthought, but the driving force and seamless threadwhich connects both disciplines in creating great buildings.”

“Architects and engineers should be getting together much earlier in projects, ever before the first lineis drawn, so that the architect’s vision can be interpreted in the most holistic way.” Farah says that inher short career she’s already seen too many cases of sequential design iterations which could havebeen avoided. “By understanding both disciplines (Farah has a Masters in sustainable environmentaldesign with a background in architectural engineering) I think I can help to identify and clarify theissues.”
