RB White Card Training

Working in the construction industry is a great way to earn money. Either way before setting foot on site you will need to ensure you are aware of the occupational health and safety requirements. On Thursday 15th September, Mr Manganaro and a group of Year 10 students, pictured above, visited a professional training organisation in the CBD where they were trained for their White Card. What is a White Card, you may ask?The white card is a credit card sized ID that you receive once you have completed the workplace health and safety course (white card training). It is required in order to work on a building site in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria and shows that you have received the necessary training in safe work place practices. Well done to the following students; Jordan Murphy, Tom Abel-Trick, Michael Dinov, Jordan Davidson, Guy Moses, Jason Martinez, Sam Doane and Josh Khosid.

RB Tap into Potential

Rose Bay has been very fortunate to have Clarissa Wilson, a Life Coach with Seguel Life Coaching, come and volunteer her time and knowledge to run a fantastic program, ‘Tap into Potential’. A group of Year 9 girls have been attending an hour long session for the last 6 weeks looking at issues such as respect, anger, self-esteem and trust.

This is what some of the girls had to say about their experiences attending the course.

“It’s helped us to understand that teachers and parents aren’t out to get us: that they actually like to help.” – Isabelle Lawson

“Makes me realise that I’m not that bad and I have a lot to offer.” – Emily Lewis

“It teaches us about self-respect and it’s been a really good experience.” – Zoe Collins

Both I and Ms Christofi would like to thank Clarissa Wilson and congratulate the Year 9 girls on their hard work during the course.

RBInside the LIBRARY

Year 12HSC time is near! The library and its resources can be of continuing assistance to you as you study for the exams. Please ask the library team if you need help locating resources for revision, examination techniques and stress relievers. There is also study support information in the closed reserve study guide area and the senior study. Good luck in your HSC exams and the journey ahead. NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge 2011Congratulations to the 49 students who completed the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). All of these students have received purple and silver school merits. On Presentation Day they will receive their certificates signed by the NSW Premier and awarded by Mr Linton, along with The Sun Herald 2011 PRC Honour Roll. Every student who completed the Challenge will also receive the special PRC lift-out issued in November. Well done to many of the remaining 93 students who read regularly and contributed positively to wide reading lessons in the library. Many of you may not have met the challenge requirements but I was pleased to witness you taking risks with your reading and finding wonderful surprises in books you thought you would dislike or have difficulty reading. A picnic celebration day will take place in Term 4 with gold certificate winners announced, games to be played, food to be eaten and prizes to be won!

Book Week 2011 One World, Many StoriesDuring Book Week this year Yr 8 had the privilege of attending a Steven Herrick poetry performance. Here’s what some students said about the performance:

“Steven Herrick was amazing! His poems were funny, entertaining and year 8 enjoyed him. He opened our eyes to how good poetry can actually be. I may consider becoming a poet!” – Chenny Chen.

“Steven Herrick’s poetry reading was great! He incorporated some of the students and even Ms Wilson into the poems! After the reading a lot of the students (including me) searched the library for his books afterwards. It was an amazing experience and we all enjoyed it.” – Lizzie Butterworth

“Steven Herrick’s poetry introduced us to a new face in poetry. I believe that most of year 8 liked his poems although surprised to find that some didn’t find the poems funny. I looked for his books and loved reading them.” – Dan Yoo

wStudent reviews on the winner and honour books

Life of a Teenage Body Snatcher – Doug MacLeodBy Ricky Pachon HONOUR BOOKLife of a teenaged body snatcher is an action packed thriller with a humorous lining. It is a stylish mix of black wit and excitement. It starts with a boy digging up his grand fathers grave when he is sucked in to the world of body snatchers. A constant adventure where your life doesn’t really matter to anyone, and deception is everyone’s best friend. Set in London, 1942 this book is a must red. It will have you bitting you nail to your first knuckle.

The Midnight Zoo By Sonya HartnettBy Christian reeves 7F WINNERThe Midnight Zoo by Sonya Hartnett won the 2011 book of the year prize. It can be recommended for any age. The Midnight Zoo is about two gypsy boys and their baby sister who have been chased away from their family by soldiers. They find a zoo in an abandoned, bombed town. To their surprise, the animals start to talk to them! This book seems like a kid’s book at first, but older readers will soon find it is really about freedom and loyalty. It deserved to win the prize.

INTRODUCING RBSC’S BOOK CLUBWe can read books that we want to read. No one makes us, we join if we want to. All of us can share our journeys through the books, the sad parts, the happy parts, the scary parts and the funny parts. The library is a place that houses hundreds of books, we explore the library, we explore human history and human creative genius. By Grace Chiu 7FThis term a small group of year 7 selective students have been participating in a book club. The club helps students learn more about books, different genres of books and reading. For our first book club we read from the Children’s Book Council short list. We were either paired or read the book individually. Then we all compared our books and presented our books to the rest of the group. We gave a short summary of the book. The purpose of presenting our books to the rest of the group was giving everyone else a chance to hear about the books and decide if they might want to read the other titles too. It was a great learning experience and I’m excited to do it again. It was really fun but also very informative and it makes me want to read more. By Jodi Rabinowitz Yr 7

Book club is a great initiative for those readers who wish to share their skills; with reading, meetings & food. Early in term 3 we were asked to join a book club. Those who accepted were asked chose a book on the 2011 shortlisted for book of the year. We chose which books we wanted to read within a week. Once we read the books we discussed the books and we voted on a victor that would win the award. Those who voted for the winner received prize and those who voted on second place got a consolatory prize. Book club is a great place for any reader who wishes to share their talent.By Daniel LeachNext Book Club will be held in week 1 Term 4. The ten students involved have chosen their own texts to discuss. If you are interested in joining book club see the librarian.
