ANIMAL HEALTH

All grazing animals are at risk of parasitic disease but the risk will vary between different groups of animals, depending on previous immunity from exposure to parasites, and every farm has its own specific challenge. Regional variations of climate and environment might also increase the risk in a particular area.Identifying what parasites are on farm and understanding what the risk period is for each species will help identify at-risk animals, and enable effective parasite control plans to be put in place to protect against losses in production. There are a number of parasitic disease scenarios facing animals during the turnout and early-grazing season. BEEFIn beef herds, the main threat to youngstock in the post-turnout period comes from pasture contamination. Suckler cows, though generally resilient towards clinical disease themselves, will shed low numbers of eggs, which can pose a risk to younger cattle. Depending on the level of exposure to parasites, and the contamination levels of the pasture, a range of management methods including worming, may be required. The key to maintaining good parasite control is pasture management, ideally maintaining low levels of pasture contamination with eggs and larvae.Where pasture contamination is low, the dams of spring-born suckler calves will eat most of the existing larvae on the pasture at turnout. The result is that calves will steadily increase their immunity to worms as they graze more heavily in the summer months. This increase in exposure will increase their immunity to gutworms and they are unlikely to need worming until later in the summer. However, where pasture contamination is high, calves may need worming earlier in the season. Autumn-born suckler calves may have received only minimal exposure to parasites in the period before housing and will have very little natural immunity to worms. After turnout, a large number of parasite larvae will be consumed while grazing. These larvae will quickly reproduce within the gut and generate eggs which are passed out onto the pasture ready to re-infect the calves. This group of cattle will benefit from good pasture management, specifically rotational grazing, or targeted worm treatment, in conjunction with faecal egg counts to monitor infection.

PREPARE FOR SPRING PARASITE CONTROL AT TURNOUT

Merial Animal health is advising farmers to plan ahead for season-long control of parasites to maintain sheep, beef and dairy productivity in a challenging marketplace. Achieving effective control at turnout and in the early grazing season is the first step in what should be a targeted approach.

Treating with an ivermectin-containing product such as IVOMEC® CLASSIC injection or pour on (or IVOMEC® SUPER where control of liver fluke is also required) can remove a number of disease-causing worm species, protecting the productivity of beef herds. DAIRYDairy farmers should also remember the impact that parasites can have on the current and future production of dairy animals.Adult dairy cows may not show outward signs of a worm burden, but gutworms (ostertagia ostertagi) can significantly inhibit their production both in terms of milk yield and fertility parameters1.Heifers at grass can be at considerable risk. First season grazing heifers will be completely naïve, having not been previously exposed to parasites. Unless appropriate measures are put in place to control parasites, the resulting disease can have a severe impact on productivity, including increased time to first conception, and reduced conception rates2.Second season grazing heifers may also be at risk of parasitic disease depending on the level of exposure they received the previous grazing season. Good pasture management, including rotational grazing, or strategic worming, may be required to prevent disease in these groups of animals.EPRINEX® (containing eprinomectin) has a zero milk withhold and is therefore suitable for lactating adult cows, those due to join the milking herd, and youngstock. It removes damaging gutworm, helping to maintain optimum productivity.

ALL CATTLE – FLUKE AND LUNGWORMWhen it comes to fluke control, the options for treatment vary between beef and dairy animals but the premise for treating is the same. The treatment plan used in the autumn will dictate the need to treat animals for chronic fluke infection (where adult flukes are present) in the spring. Adult fluke present in animals at turnout will contaminate the pasture with fluke eggs in the early grazing season, increasing the pressure on the pasture in late summer and autumn.Where this is identified as a risk, it may be necessary to treat cattle for fluke now, to minimize further contamination.

TRODAX® (containing nitroxynil) controls fluke from eight weeks post-infection in beef cattle, and dairy

heifers in the first trimester of pregnancy. Controlling fluke can help animals make the most of grass, the cheapest source of feed, and thereby improve live weight gain. The options for treating lactating dairy cows are more limited and product choice should be discussed with a vet or SQP (Suitably Qualified Person). The final cattle parasite to consider is lungworm. Vaccination pre-turnout is one option to prevent lungworm disease, but it does not provide 100% protection. Unvaccinated animals will need to be monitored and in most situations strategic worming, in conjunction with advice from a vet, will be the mainstay for lungworm treatment throughout the season.EPRINEX® provides fast and effective control of lungworm, with zero milk withhold.

SHEEP

In the period around lambing, ewes may shed increasing numbers of worm eggs, due to a dip in immunity. Managing ewes for parasites around lambing will ensure that the resulting larvae don’t pose a risk to growing lambs later in the season.Nematodirus in lambs is normally the main concern post-turnout and may pose a significant risk, especially when lambs are turned out onto pasture grazed by lambs the previous year. Scouring from nematodirus is caused by the parasite larvae, which does not produce eggs. This means that faecal egg counts are ineffective at identifying infection. Instead, farmers should keep a close watch on the SCOPS or NADIS websites which will indicate when there is a high risk of infection in their region. This is a good opportunity to use Group 1 white wormers, since nematodirus is one of the few parasites not resistant to this group of wormers. However, care should be taken if lambs are being treated later in the nematodirus season as this may overlap with a potentially wider worm spectrum, which will not be as susceptible to white wormers.Pasture management provides a real opportunity to reduce the infection pressure from nematodirus on sheep, and reduce the reliance on wormers. If lambs are turned out onto clean grazing (pasture that was not grazed by lambs the previous year) there is virtually no risk from nematodirus infection. However, if they are turned out onto paddocks that are used every year, there will be a high risk of nematodirus infection, and lambs will almost certainly need worming in spring.Parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE) is the next potential disease to cause illness in growing lambs. PGE has the potential to slow growth, increase finishing times and risk further pasture contamination with worm eggs.Faecal egg counts (FECs) pooled from susceptible lambs can help identify infection and determine the need to drench. Post-drench FECs, taken at an appropriate time after treatment can also help monitor the efficacy of the product used.Depending on the individual on-farm risk factors, including any known resistance to specific wormer groups, farmers should employ a range of control measures, including pasture rotation and strategic dosing to effectively manage PGE.

Wormers from Group 3 (clear drenches) such as ORAMEC®, which contains ivermectin, will remove damaging worms and thereby prevent and treat PGE and associated scouring in affected animals. It will also reduce the number of worm eggs passed out to re-infect pasture.

OUTWINTERED AND BOUGHT-IN ANIMALS

Outwintered cattle and sheep may require a slightly different approach to parasite control.Depending on the weather conditions over the winter, the parasite season may or may not have been extended. The treatment should therefore take account of local conditions. The NADIS monthly parasite forecast provides some regional information which can help inform decision making. Where bought-in animals are concerned, it is vital to protect the farm’s parasite status. Quarantining new animals provides the opportunity to check them over, administer appropriate treatments and will help to prevent pasture contamination and the spread of potentially resistant parasites. Quarantine is also good practice to prevent other diseases from being brought on to farm.Watch the videoA video about parasite control at turnout and during the early grazing period is available from Merial Animal Health, here: http://bit.ly/1Q87TdU

Wynnstay Lambcol has been formulated to provide the new-born lamb with everything it needs!

Lambcol contains highly digestible forms of fat that are vital for supplying much needed energy for protection from hypothermia. Lambcol also contains quality protein. The total protein content of Lamcol is from several sources, the most important being dried colostrum. Colostrum is the way in which the ewe transfers antibodies to the lamb for passive immunity because antibodies do not cross the placenta to the lamb before birth. The appearance of dried colostrum at the top of a declaration is a good indicator of product quality.

Lambcol also contains pre and probiotics. Studies have found that bacterial probiotics target the small intestine and help support favourable gut colonisation stabilise. Yeasts given soon after birth have also been favour microbial colonisation in the rumen.

WYNNSTAY LAMBCOL

In the absence of sufficient colostrum, the temptation is often to simply use a milk replacer. This is a false economy. A ewe’s colostrum differs substantially in its makeup from a ewe’s milk, not only in the fact that it contains antibodies, but also because it contains a significantly higher fat and protein content. Therefore a colostrum alternative should be used if there is insufficient colostrum.

A colostrum should also be easy mixing and produce a product that is smooth and creamy in consistency. This is important, firstly from a practical point of view in terms of easy handling and feeding, but secondly from a quality point of view. Proteins are temperature sensitive. If a product cannot be quickly and easily mixed using only warm water there is danger that any benefits from the inclusion of dried colostrum may be lost.

It is vital that lambs receive ewe colostrum or Lambcol as quickly as possible. At birth lambs have a unique ability to absorb antibodies through the intestine wall. However, this ability is decreasing from the moment it is born, so for best effect, colostrum supplements should be fed as soon as possible after birth.

ANIMAL HEALTH

Leptospirosis is also a zoonotic disease, which means it can infect humans too, so it’s important to ensure that the correct control regime is in place in order to reassure those working with cattle.

In cattle, leptospirosis is associated with poor conception, high culling rates and increased abortion. Those wanting the broadest protection should vaccinate against both strains of the disease that have been proven to infect UK cattle (L. hardjo bovis and L. hardjo prajitno).

LeptavoidTM-H is the only leptospirosis vaccine available that is licensed to protect your stock against both strains present in the UK, and significantly this vaccine is licensed to improve fertility where Leptospira hardjo is implicated.

The ideal time to vaccinate is just prior to turnout, because of the increased risks of infection. At grass,

PROTECT YOUR HERD AND STAFF AGAINST LEPTOSPIROSIS THIS SPRING

According to findings from the 2013 Herd Vaccination Survey carried out as part of MSD Animal Health’s Healthier Herd Healthier Profits campaign, leptospirosis remains one of the main infectious diseases affecting profitability in cattle herds. Over 60% of respondents identified leptospirosis as a significant potential threat to herd profitability, with only BVD attracting a higher response.

uninfected cattle are suddenly exposed to the urine of any infected animals that may be shedding leptospires. Moist spring grass is also a relatively favourable environment for these leptospires, allowing them to survive for longer outside the host.

BE AWARE OF THE RISK FACTORS

Your herd is at greater risk of being infected with leptospirosis if:• Cattle have access to natural waterways

(contaminated water can spread the disease)• Cattle are co-grazed with sheep (which can

carry the disease)• A bull of unknown disease status is used

(natural service can spread the disease)• Cattle of unknown disease status are introduced

to your herd

Spring Barley

No. 1 for Grain & Straw

Produces more straw than any other variety!

Kelim spring barley has all the characteristics needed in a feed variety

The number 1 choice for growers looking to maximise the yield of grain and straw.

Our bestselling Spring barley variety for 2 years.

Long straw which yields more straw per acre than all other varieties, including Westminster (see Straw Yield table)

Stiff straw and the top rating for resistance to Brackling.

Good resistance to Mildew and Rhynco.

Superb performance during the previous two years.

In addition to good all round agronomics and a good grain yield, Kelim produces more straw than all other spring barley varieties. This has been well proven by the AFBI (Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute) in Northern Ireland, the only region that assesses the straw yield of each variety. The table opposite shows that from 4 years of trials Kelim produces 14% more straw than Westminster, the next highest yielder, and the variety that was very popular with mixed farms for several years. It also has very stiff straw and excellent resistance to brackling making Kelim a safer to grow, even in fertile situations.

One year quick growing grass mixture. If you want a silaging grass seed mixture with very fast establishment and even quicker growth, Fast Grass is the mix for you - the Westerwolds content makes it grow tall and fast for high productivity providing exceptional yielding and quality cut.

SHORT TERM LEYS: 1 - 2 YEARS

FAST GRASS

1-2 year bulky silage grass mixture. If you want up to four cuts of high quality grass silage, Tower will not disappoint. Tower grass seed mix is made up of 100% Italian ryegrasses, enabling growth at the lowest temperatures of agricultural grasses therefore growing earliest in the spring and latest in the autumn.

TOWER

3 year grass mix with red clover for high energy silage and aftermath grazing. If you want to finish lambs faster or cut a high protein silage, Squire will suit your needs. Quick to establish, including Hybrid ryegrasses, Squire provide high yields and high water soluble carbohydrate (sugar) contents that can last for up to four years.

MEDIUM TERM LEYS: 3 - 6 YEARS

SQUIRE

3-4 year heavy grass production with early grass growth.Fortress is a grass seed mixture with good early spring growth suitable for an early cut or graze. This is a fast growing grass ley ideally suited to cutting with some light grazing, so if grazing is your priority have a look at Shield.

FORTRESS

4 year quality grazer with silage potential. Shield grass seed mix is ideal for short/medium term grazing; included is the hybrid ryegrass which provides good ground cover and very quick regrowth. Shield grass seed mix will produce a high quality first silage cut around the third week of May in a normal year.

SHIELD

4-6 year intensive dual purpose grass mix. Sovereign is our bestselling grass seed mixture simply because it is specifically designed for intensive management of both cutting and grazing so suits most livestock farming systems as it’s so versatile.

SOVEREIGN

LONG TERM LEYS: 6 YEARS+

Long term cutting and grazing grass mix. Imperial grass seed mixture is made up of all late perennial ryegrasses to give excellent first cut silage. Late perennials also make the grass mix less likely to produce stemmy seed heads in the summer maintaining a lush leafy sward throughout the grass growing season.

IMPERIAL

High sugar grazing with early bite. A long-term grass mixture with good early spring growth making it ideal for turning ewes and lambs out onto. The high diploid content in the Crusader grass mix aids to create a very dense base to the sward.

CRUSADER

Long term dual purpose grass seed mix. Herald is a versatile grass seed mix for cutting and grazing, producing a very dense sward making it ideal for turning ewes and lambs out onto in early spring.

HERALD

Long term cutting and grazing grass mix. The blend of intermediate and late perennials gives great flexibility for both cutting and grazing for potentially over 6 years.

MAIZE

The choice of maize variety is made easier because you can refer to the BSPB/NIAB Descriptive List. This independent guide compares all the key attributes of varieties and allows you to make a well informed choice.

After the difficult growing and harvesting season in many parts of the country in 2015, the focus will be on early maturing varieties with good early vigour because farmers are going to be keen to make sure they can get the crops into the clamps and not be left fighting the weather as happened this year. They will get away quickly and will allow an earlier harvest, which should ensure better harvesting conditions.

Equally importantly, an earlier harvest will increase the chances of getting the following crop established which will be important to reduce soil run off over the winter.

Once varieties have been shortlisted based on agronomic features and maturity date, the aim must be to then select those from the shortlist with the greatest milk production potential. The newer varieties in general have higher dry matter

With popular varieties always in demand, it is important to sort your 2016 maize plans and ensure you get the ones that will deliver in your situation.

yields, superior starch content and improved cell wall digestibility which together will mean more production from forage.

One new variety that has proved successful recently and has certainly caught the eye is Reason from Limagrain. At maturity class 12 it is very early and also has excellent early vigour making it suitable for short growth seasons. It is equally at home on favourable and more marginal sites.

It is one of the highest yielding very early options and, unusually for a variety in this maturity segment, it has exceptional cell wall digestibility combined with excellent starch content. While most people associate energy in maize with starch content, 50% of the available energy is within the cell walls. A variety with good cell wall digestibility will lead to higher energy content in the feed, building on the starch content.

Reason will be added to the Descriptive List for 2017 but you can get ahead of the game and grow it this year, ensuring a high yielding, early harvested crop.
