FARM FRESH

HOLMWOOD FARMGILLIAN WATT 1996 Barnhartvale Rd. Kamloops, B.C. Phone: 250‑319‑2367 Email: [email protected]

Holmwood Farm is proud to be a licensed producer of premium B.C. lamb. The farm is located 30 minutes east of Kamloops at 1996 Barnhartvale Rd.

The sheep graze on irrigated and natural hillside pastures through the summer months and are fed hay from nearby ranches during the winter. They are also given free choice salt and minerasl to ensure they have optimum levels of micronutrients throughout the year. The lambs are born in March and April and usually stay with their mothers for at least four months. The ewes are sheared once per year in late April and the wool is sold to the Canadian Woolgrowers in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Owner Gillian Watt enjoys showing visitors the farm and, when in season, you can pick a few vegetables to take home with your lamb. You can order your lamb by phone or email. We deliver right to your home or you can visit the farm to pick it up. Our lamb is also available at The Farm Store in Yarrow, B.C. and is served at the Halcyon Hot Springs Resort in Nakusp, B.C. and Echo Valley Ranch Resort at Big Bar, B.C.

We are a small, 10 acre farm in Kamloops on ALR land. We produce naturally raised pastured chickens (meat birds), and turkeys. Our birds have no hormones, antibiotics and live outside from one week old. Chicken available in June, and again in October when the turkeys are ready for Thanksgiving. Organic garlic is ready in early August. Our sheep are not given hormones or antibiotics and they spend their lives on grazing organic grass pastures, and resting in the shade of spruce trees. Lambs are ready late fall.

Please place orders for product in advance, so we can be sure to meet your needs.

Come for a tour of the farm and professionally landscaped gardens and meadows where the sheep, chickens, and

“Local Culinary Grazing”FARM2CHEFS ANNUAL FUNDRAISERFrom the farm to your plate. Join local chefs and farmers for the fifth annual Farm2Chefs fundraiser on July 26 at Privato Winery for “a grazing experience to celebrate and support local chefs, food, wine and ale.”

The Farms2Chefs annual fundraiser aims to show off the best of what local farmers and producers have to offer. Thirteen restaurants and more than 10 local wineries and breweries will get together with local farmers to create truly local appetizers.

Chefs create tasty one-bite dishes, complemented by the finest beverages from local wineries and breweries. The event will also feature live entertainment and children’s activities and guests can interact directly with the membership of Farm2Chefs.

The money raised goes towards the Farm2Chefs grant, available to farmers and local food security groups. In previous years, funds helped support public-produce ventures and community kitchens.

Farm2Chefs is a non-profit society with a mission to connect local farms with local restaurants, helping move locally grown food from seed to plate. It’s a member-driven organization comprised mainly of farmers and chefs in the area.

Farm2Chefs was formed in 2010 with a simple mandate of strengthening the linkage between local food producers and chefs and supporting the local food economy. Today, the organization has a strong network of local producers and restaurants. One of the organization’s founding chefs, David Tombs of Terra Restaurant, said the program allows chefs to work with great local product and farmers to sell goods directly to restaurants, rather than other distribution channels.

“The area that we live in is so rich and there is so much available,” he said. Since its inception, Farm2Chefs has undertaken a number of initiatives. Grow-op

(growing opportunities) was intended to link farmers and chefs early in the growing season to allow chefs to communicate to farmers what foods they would be willing to purchase. The collaborative also operates a grants and loans program that provides funds for farmers and chefs for various initiatives.

Join Farm2Chefs on July 26 at Privato Winery from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. and support local chefs and farmers. Tickets are available for purchase at the Kamloops Farmer’s Market, Electric Tree Yarn at 290 Third Ave., and through the Kamloops Live Box Office at kam-loopslive.ca. For more information on the event, go online to farm2chefs.com.

Fresh eats and interesting finds at the farmers’ marketThe Kamloops Farmers’ Market is back for another summer.

Every Saturday and Wednesday head downtown for some fresh eats and unique finds. Among the more than 100 participating businesses, manager Annelise Grube-Cavers is excited to welcome new

agricultural vendors, as well as new artisans.“New farmers always bring new products, so they’ll be growing different varieties, which is really nice, to have that

diversity,” she said, adding it’s exciting to see young farming families, given the average age of farmers is over 50. Everything from radishes to kale and carrots to zucchini is available throughout the summer. Dry herbs, fresh

herbs, seasoned butter spreads, several different kinds of tomatoes and berries — some you might never have heard of — are for sale. The market also boasts a selection of meats, including poultry, different kinds of sausage, turkey, lamb, pork and beef.

“You can basically find everything you need to cook your meals at the market,” Grube-Cavers said. The new artisans have homemade soaps and lotions, some made from organic beeswax. New honey vendors from

Lumby and Merritt join the many crafters and bakers. Massage therapy and acupuncture booths have also returned. Find infused oils, sewing, jewelry, garden sculptures and art in many forms amongst the crafters.

“Almost every single vendor has been returning from the last many years because it’s such a successful place for their business, so that’s great,” Grube-Cavers said.

Not every vendor attends each week, but many appear at both the Saturday and Wednesday markets. A vendor list is kept up to date at kamloopsfarmersmarket.com, where you can check who will appear each week.

The first Saturday market of each month will feature a live band. If you need to drive, check the Seymour Street parkade, where parking is free every Saturday.

The Saturday market is held in the 200-block of St. Paul Street and the Stuart Wood schoolyard from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. until Oct. 31. The Wednesday market is held in the 400-block of Victoria Street from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Oct. 28.

Food Policy Council 20th Anniversary The Kamloops Food Policy Council (KFPC) is celebrating 20 years of successful programming in Kamloops.

It was the first food policy council in Canada, created out of a need for further food security. Founder and co-chair Laura Kalina said when she moved to Kamloops in 1987, she realized there were many people who didn’t have access to healthy, local food.

“If there was an earthquake in Hope, we couldn’t feed ourselves,” she said. “It went from being a low-income issue to everyone is affected by this.”

In a short period of time, the industrial food system has come into play, and the growing guild has been lost.

KFPC provides guidance and implements actions to improve food security in the Kamloops area. Established in 1995, the KFPC has emphasized public education on food-security issues as well as concrete food-system projects. The KFPC acts as an umbrella, providing an opportunity for project and advocacy groups to co-ordinate their work.

“The key theme for me is how people have been so supportive along the way,” said Kalina, who is a registered dietician and nutritionist with Interior Health. “Who would think, 20 years ago, where we would be been today?

“We’ve come a long way.”The early initiatives were community gardens.

The council lobbied to get one up and running in Sahali, in addition to the Crestline garden on the North Shore. Eventually, the city came on board and today, Kalina said, the entire philosophy around planting has changed. Now the city considers planting edibles wherever it can and there are eight community gardens in town.

The council has fostered food-action projects with community members over the last 20 years us-ing the community-development approach and has provided input to City of Kamloops policy develop-ment related to food security and urban agriculture. The KFPC has been involved in programs such as Gardengate, Interior Community Kitchens, Kam-loops Foodshare and Kamloops Farmer’s Market.

“Urban agriculture is what we do well,” Kalina said.

The city’s urban agriculture plan, currently being developed, emphasizes supporting edible land-scapes, making local food more available, supporting buying local and building to accommodate gardens.

“It’s about making it easy to support a sustainable food system,” Kalina said.

The Community Food Action Program is the biggest current project of the KFPC. Created in

2012, the year-round program provides “educa-tional, poverty relief, nutritional, volunteer, economic, food security and food sharing opportunities.” It has five elements: networking, the Gleaning Abundance Program and Public Produce. Plus, backyard sharing and the good food box, programs that are still in the planning stage.

The Gleaning Abundance Program is in its third year and the council is starting to look at passing it on to a non-profit, such as it did with community kitchens and community gardens, which are run by Interior Community Services. Co-chair Addie Houlberg said the KFPC often acts as a incubator for programs.

“I think a lot of the local non-profits are doing a good job, but they are at capacity,” she said. “It’s easier for them to take on an existing program.”

“It’s kind of a beautiful niche that we fit into.” For more information on the Kamloops Food

Policy Council, go online to kamloopsfoodpolicy-council.com.

Read more about the council’s current programs:

The Kamloops Public Produce Program The Public Produce Program is part of Com-munity Food Action Program of the KFPC. Public produce gardens act as an educational tool within the community, demonstrating sustainable, organic techniques that promote a healthy environment, as well as diversify urban food supply sources and build resilience to food crisis. In addition to the strong volunteer base the program maintains, master gardeners offer advice and expertise for the program and help maintain the gardens. The first public garden was planted in downtown Kamloops on Victoria Street and in 2012 the City of Kamloops initiated a non-gated, organic, edible demonstration garden in McDonald Park and an edible garden in front of city hall.

The Gleaning Abundance Program The Gleaning Abundance Program (GAP) ensures that healthy food does not go to waste. It is a food-security initiative that seeks to preserve and protect local food systems by helping home owners care for and make use of their food crops. Home owners with too much fruit in their trees or vegetables in their garden can contact GAP to share their abundance. Tree scouts and harvest leaders will harvest the food and share with homeowners, volunteers and outreach programs. Join the project and register your garden, tree or small farm at gleaningabundance.com.
