Environmental Farm PlanEnvironmental farm planning is a voluntary process that producers can use to identify both environmental strengths and any potential risks on their farms. If needed, an action plan is developed to reduce risks. This national program is administered in B.C. through the B.C. Agriculture Council. This logo recognizes that the farm has completed its environmental plan.

B.C. Certified OrganicThe B.C. Certified Organic Program is a voluntary agri-food quality program sanctioned by the B.C. government (www.gov.bc.ca/agri). It is administered through the Certified Organic Association of B.C. (COABC). Farms that meet the standards for production, processing and handling are eligible to use the term B.C. Certified Organic and the symbol checkmark in a box.

Verified Beef ProgramVBP is a national on-farm food safety program for beef producers in Canada. A farm registered with VBP has demonstrated through an audit that their food safety practices conform to program requirements. This program is based on the world recognized food safety standard known as HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control point) and is designed to help producers prevent, monitor and reduce food safety risks on their beef cattle farms.

B.C. AgriTourism Alliance Quality Assurance ProgramThis program has been developed in consultation with agritourism operators to establish consistent, quality agritourism experiences throughout B.C. Once an operation becomes accredited by BCATA, an excellent insurance program and provincial highway road signage are available. For more information check our website at www.bcagritourism.ca.

In using this guide you will be supporting local agriculture and insuring a supply of nutritious local food

A special feature brought back once more for 2012, is an Internet link to all the producer listings — a feature supported by Tourism Kamloops.

Today, Amaranth Farm in McLure is a fledgling homestead on the North Thompson that has been inspired by nature and nurtured with love. The hand-built log home made from materials gleaned from the land blends beautifully with the backdrop of the river valley. The farm’s nursery, landscaped grounds, vegetable and perennial gardens, pool and trout pond provide a cohesive connection to the natural world at every step. But one thing visitors first notice are the hundreds of trees planted on the property. Many were planted over the years to enhance the property, but most were planted to help those looking to do a little beautification of their own. Amaranth offers Colorado blue and green spruce, Austrian pines as well as deciduous trees that can provide brilliant colour and contrast with existing landscaping. Customers are invited to view trees at different heights and stages of development and stroll the grounds for inspiration. Amaranth is also home to the office of the River and Adventure Company, which provides interpretive charter tours of the North Thompson River aboard a 10-passenger pontoon boat. Tours run from 30 minutes to two hours and give visitors insight into how the First Nations and early settlers depended on the river and its role in the ecosystem today. Visitors looking to escape the rush of life can instead fall asleep to the gentle rush of the river from the outdoor screen bedroom at the 1,700 sq. -ft. log home at Amaranth. With as much outdoor living space as indoor living space on the extensive wraparound porches, screened verandas and bedroom, visitors are invited to greet the sun on the porch with a coffee in the morning, and then watch it set from a porch-slung hammock in the evening. In winter, skate on the river, cross-country ski through the meadow, share hot chocolate by the majestic river-stone fireplace. Mid June Tanya-Ray will head north to the Haida Quai (Queen Charlottes) to continue with our north troll fishery. Our Salmon is caught on a barbless hook and line and brought onto the boat 1 fish at a time. The salmon are cleaned and flash frozen (temperatures of -40C) aboard ship within one hour of catch to lock in Quality and Freshness providing product to be savored throughout the year. This process ensures the absolute #1 quality of salmon. TUNA-KING is our new Tuna boat, and will be fishing for albacore tuna off our BC coast starting in June. For nearly 20 years, the Kamloops Food Policy Council (KFPC) has been providing guidance and implementing actions to improve food security in the Kamloops area. Food security means that everyone in our community can access and afford to eat healthy foods. People are food insecure when they can’t afford or get the foods they need to live healthy and active lifestyles.

As the first food policy council in Canada, KFPC has provided local and national leadership in the development of food policy and best practices in urban agriculture. It acts as a commu-nications forum for locally developed food systems that increase our resil-ience to climate change, reduce compe-tition for global food resources and lower the need for costly packaging and transportation of food.

Buying locally grown and locally raised foods is healthier for our com-munity. The longer produce spends in transport or sits on a grocery store shelf, the more nutrients it loses. In

contrast, local produce is ripe and fresh. Get to know your local farmers. Many of them use organic or other sus-tainable agriculture methods that fur-ther reduce the impact on the environ-ment and improve food quality.

•Public produce initiatives grow healthy, nutritious food on publicly accessible lands such as boulevards, right-of-ways, schoolyards and in pub-licly accessible gardens. This year, Kamloops is growing free produce in two sites — 121 Victoria St. and at the newest community garden in McDonald Park on the North Shore. There are plans for expansion. •Community Gardens have expanded

rapidly in our city. The two newest locations are behind the Wilson House and McDonald Park on the North Shore.
