Dairy Sustainability Bonus for Milk Recording and Herd Health Programme Participants 2019Dairygold has introduced a new Milk Supplier Sustainability Bonus designed to improve the sustainability of the Dairygold milk production base.

Bonus payments will be made to Dairygold Milk Suppliers who participate in Milk Recording and Herd Health programmes.

Dairygold is offering Milk Suppliers who participate in Milk Recording a 0.1cpl bonus and another 0.05cpl bonus for those who join Munster Cattle Breeding Group’s Herd Health programme.

These bonus payments together with the existing 0.1cpl SDAS bonus will mean a total of 0.25cpl in sustainability related bonus payments for Milk

Suppliers on top of the existing milk quality bonus of 0.4cpl.

The 0.1 cpl Milk Recording bonus will be paid from the month the Milk Supplier signs up to the Milk Recording programme, following completion of the first Milk Recording so don’t delay in getting started.

Munster Cattle Breeding Group wish to advise new Milk Recording customers that the closing date for receipt of application forms is May 31st for the 2019 season. The 0.05cpl Herd Health bonus payment will be paid from the month the Milk Supplier signs up to the Munster Cattle Breeding Group Herd Health programme.

In order to ensure that four bulk milk tests are completed in 2019, it is essential that new Herd Health customers sign up before April 5th 2019.

At this stage, all Milk Suppliers will have received the Dairygold Sustainability Bonus Application forms by post.

Simply complete this form if you are not already Milk Recording with Munster Cattle Breeding Group or a Participant in a Munster Herd Health Programme or call Munster directly on 022 43228 to get started.

Chlorate Residues in milkStringent regulations for specific dairy products play a major part in our Irish Dairying Industry today. One of these regulations is the monitoring of chlorine residues such as chlorates in dairy products, particularly IMF (Infant milk formula). Due to increased food safety concerns, this needs to be addressed promptly. Failure to comply can result in loss of current and/or future contracts with customers.

Chlorates are produced by the degradation of sanitising agents such as chlorine, chlorine dioxide or hypochlorite. Intensive chlorate testing is currently being carried out across our Members and sites. The maximum limit in milk is <0.00375 mg/kg. Each Member will be tested at least once in 2019 and if deemed necessary, additional testing will be carried out.

As per the Milk Purchasing Terms and Conditions (pg. 9, 2.13 chlorates), any supplier who fails a chlorate test will be requested to move to a chlorine free detergent. This move will safeguard our milk from exceeding chlorine limits in milk concentrates/powder.

Dairy Market ReportGLOBAL MILK PRODUCTION & TRADE

MARKET OUTLOOK AND PRICING

SUPPLY SIDE DEMAND SIDE• EU milk production slightly decreased in December

2018 compared to November 2017.

• New Zealand milk production increased in

December 2018 compared to the same month

in 2017.

• US milk production increased in December 2018

compared to December 2017.

• Australian milk production was lower in December

2018 than in December 2017.

Global Dairy Trade (GDT) Event 231. 5th March 2019

+3.3%

The latest GDT auction, event 231, concluded with a seventh consecutive rise in index, with the GDT price index up 3.3% overall. Again, Brexit has impacted market sentiment this month with many buyers adopting a ‘wait-and-see position’. On the world market, butter weakened under low activity levels. Cheese remains firm, likely due to tighter milk production in early 2019. SMP is stable, however China-US trade talks may determine the outlook of EU SMP prices in the short-term.

• China was the main global dairy importer in 2018, importing the highest volumes of WMP, butter and whey powder worldwide.

• Russia was the second main butter importer in 2018, followed by the US.

• Japan, Russia, the US and South Korea were the main global importers of cheese in 2018 (US with 76% EU origin).

• Mexico was the main SMP importer in 2018 with an 8% increase on 2017, however EU SMP imports dropped to 1% from 13% the previous year.

Milk Volume Forecasting

Dairygold milk supply for February 2019 was down 4.6% on February 2018 milk volumes.Milk Supply

Excessive chlorate residues can have serious health implications for vulnerable groups such as infants who have a mild to moderate iodine deficiency and individuals with low iodine uptake, hence why IMF products are of primary concern. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the EU Commission are currently carrying out extensive research on the risk of chlorates levels in foods on public health.

How to avoid chlorate residues in milk:• Use chlorine free products. Some may be both chlorine and chlorate free – consult your Milk Quality Advisor to discuss further. When changing to a different product, always read the label and consult your Milking Machine Technician and Bulk Tank Technician to change detergent rates if necessary

• Use Teagasc approved detergents - full listing of approved detergents and chlorine free products are available at www.teagasc.ie

• Avoid stock piling excessive amounts of detergents.

• Store detergents in a cool dark room and out of direct sunlight.

• Always check the expiry date before purchasing and use within three months of purchase.

• Ensure you have the correct dilution rates - Detergent:Water. Too much detergent could cause/contribute to your chlorate issue! Extra detergent does not equal better cleaning.

• Do NOT reuse detergent more than once.

• Adequate rinsing before and after milking and do NOT reuse rinse water.

o Detergent cycle – 9L (2 gallons) of water with detergent/milking unit

o Rinsing cycle – 14L (3 gallons) of water/milking unit

• Make sure the CIP settings in the bulk tank for rinse water and detergent usage is correct. Discuss this with your Bulk Tank Service Technician.

• Peracetic acid (Cluster XX or Serpent) should be used instead of chlorine for cluster dipping, water sterilisation or for final rinse in the milking machine.

• Some teat dips may contain chloride or chlorine dioxide, care needs to be taken if pre-dipping cows with these dips and always follow manufacturer’s instructions on the label. Always wipe the product off the teats before attaching the cluster.

As of 1st January 2019, all suppliers must be, and remain, SDAS certified.

Therefore, in accordance with the Rules of the Society and as a matter of Policy, Dairygold will only collect milk that is SDAS certified as and from 1st

January 2019. Without certification, milk will not be collected.

Please ensure that milk withdrawals are adhered to for milking cow and dry cow therapy in order to avoid antibiotic contamination of milk supplies.

Mark and separate treated cows very well to avoid errors.

As per the 2019 Milk Purchasing Terms & Conditions, Milk Suppliers whose bulk tanks have insufficient capacity to hold two days worth of milk, will incur a charge of €100 per collection for each collection over 16 in any month. In 2019, milk will not be collected from non-refrigerated tanks and drivers have been advised accordingly.

SDAS Vigilance Required Daily Collection

Dairygold is pleased to offer an added value service to its customers through their technical sales adviser Susan Casey, who will be working alongside the sales team to assist farmers throughout the season.

Susan joins the team having undertaken extensive training in calf milk replacer nutrition and is fully trained in the set up and calibration of automatic feeders. As part of her role, Susan will be offering advice on feeding and managing the calf rearing process from birth to weaning.

Commenting on her current view on farm, Susan recommends absolute hygiene in the calf feeder area, a correctly set-up feed curve for calves and finally the use of a high-quality protein milk replacer to deliver the best value in driving calf growth.

Speaking of her role, Susan says; “I will be available to offer advice and training through farm visits, phone calls and discussion group meetings that will be organised to allow you to gain as much insight and understanding into maximising your calf rearing performance.”

Tom Stack is one such farmer which Susan has assisted and advised. A dairy farmer milking 80 spring calving cows, Tom rears 30 to 40 heifer calves per year on an urban calfmom feeder which was installed by Volac last year.

The feeder was installed in a bid to reduce labour input on the farm, given we are working off farm full time and to streamline calf rearing. Tom runs the farm with the help of his wife Stephanie and son Ben.

All bull calves are sold as soon as possible at 10-14 days old. All calves are given colostrum immediately after birth and remain on their mother’s milk for 2-3 days before being trained on the feeder.

Since Volac installed the feeder, Tom hasn’t looked back. “I decided to use Dairygold’s Prime Elite 25 Plus due to its high-quality whey protein and beneficial health impact on our calves.”

Developed by Volac, Imunopro is a key ingredient in both Prime Elite 23 and Prime Elite 25 Plus milk replacers, part of Dairygold’s milk replacer range which is manufactured by Volac. Based on concentrated whey protein, Imunopro is a highly concentrated bio-active milk complex produced from liquid whey. Imunopro is carefully balanced to ensure the optimum level of amino acids, fatty acids and milk sugars vital for growth, health and development of the calf.

Susan worked closely with Tom to develop an effective plan to suit his system; “I worked with Tommy to set his feed curve with calves receiving six litres for 44 days and are weaned over a 20-day period. Calves have an average birth weight of 40kg and from last year at weaning averaged 90kg.”

Tom has seen many benefits since switching to the Prime Elite range; “We have found that the calves are very healthy and since using Prime Elite 25 Plus we have had no issue with scour or sick calves.”

For more information relating to our milk replacer range or any other queries, please contact your Dairygold Area Sales Manager or Inside Sales on 022 31644. You can also log onto www.dairygoldagri.ie

Key lean messages: •Measuring •Cleanliness •Personal safety

This month’s Leanfarm ideas aim to highlight the importance of measuring the correct volumes of water for rinse and wash cycles and the correct amount of detergent to be used in the wash cycle when washing the milking parlour.

Lean principles associated with measuring detergents are: • Accurate measurement to reduce waste of detergents• Accuracy in volume measurement and type of detergent to prevent TCM and chlorates residues• Focus on safety – use of protective clothing as part of the wash routine process• Avoid reuse of detergent rinse.

Do you know the capacity of your wash trough? It is vital to measure and establish the volume of the wash trough that you are presently working with.Measure the amount of detergent required to wash each milking parlour.

AlfalfaKey points• Alfalfa has very high intake characteristics when compared to other forages, making it very suitable in the diets of high producing animals where intake may limit output.

• Alfalfa has a very high buffering capacity, neutralising acid in the rumen and helping control acidosis. This again points to a useful place in the diet of high producing animals.

• Reduction in silage intake – 1Kg alfalfa replaces 4.4Kgs pit silage.
