I thou^t 0 my, what a mixture. A young wom n i s very discouragedsince she cannot take the medicine that helps so many. She thint h a t death ends a l l so it would he be t t e r to die than to l i ve onhe a burden. She came to the hospi ta l as a ntirse and contracteddisease. These and many others need yo\ir prayers .

The Japanese have a custom when they are praying to say, Isome are coming make their feet come quickly . I t is quite apprpriate since Japanese axe often late to services. I ask you tothat many of the thousands of feet passing by each day may be tuto en t e r and hea r th e word o f life

    Again I want to thank a l l those who support us by their praand of f e r i ngs .

    GRACE FARNHAH - Fa l l Let ter ear Fr i t ^nds

I t is fall again with cool nights but usually beautiful daysThe eighteenth and nineteenth typhoon of the season came in OctobHowever, Tokyo experienced only heavy rains. You have he^d manyreports of the typhoon that struck the city of Nagoya, bringing inthe sea and destroying a great part of the- city and killingthan five thousand people. The U. S. service men were a great hein rescuing people. At one time they were using forty helicoptoto take the stranded from roof tops trees and places wherewere barely out of the water. There were cases where Japanese maheroic efforts to save people. A policeman and his wife borrowedtruck and carried all the children and old people to safety^romone section. A taxi iriver saved many people. People of all coutries have sent relief supplies of money, food clothing and blamets. The Japanese have made house to house canvasses for money arelief supplies e sent tv^^e to^from the church

The two missionary families of the Church of Christ \vorkingNagoya were in America but Howard 2 avis flew back to help in thistime of need. The roof of his home was blown off. One church wacompletely washed away and another badly damaged.A typhoon struck the place in the mountains where we were inAugust. After a night of pouring rain the trees bepn to fall. Two tall firs just outside our bedroom windows fell into the neigbor s yard* If they had fallen the opposite direction they woulhave crashed right across the house. A number of houses were stru amps were held in our summervhome from July 13 until the enof August. I helped with some of them but they were led by theFleenors. One young man who was baptized at the Mabashi church whe was in Primary school decided that he wants to become a preacer. His parents both Christians used to be faithful workers inthe Mabashi Church but they have moved to another city. They att

a church there and the young man, now in college is active in thBible School. Other young people were inspired to more faithfulservice for Christ by their attendance a t the camps. One of the camp speakers was a Japanese preacher who had beecrippled by polio when he was three. I do appreciate those v^o have continued faithfully in praand offer ings through the years.Things o f In t e r e s t

You would enjoy taking a shopping t r ip with me. There ares t i l l so many things that are different in Japan. The nearestis where the rice is rationed. I t is stacked in big rice straw ration is usually about six or eight cups three times a monMrs. Kongo and Miss Watanabe also get a ration. s have Japese food with rice once a day we use about that amount. The Jese sometimes have rice more often but once a day is enough forI lauded to see the t iny boxes o f r ice in the American homes. The Japanese use a lo t of beans in making cakes. A pastemade and sweetened unt i l it i s l ike candy. These arc made in dferent shapes and oftened colored. Some are made with a pancakl ike ro l l on the outside. Some are cup cakes with the center sened beans. Many beans are imported from America as they use bfo r the soy sauce which seasons a l l t he i r foodIn one shop are the funeral decorations of large wreaths oi f i c ia l flowers and what looks l ike pictures in small frames.are for the names of the dead and are placed on the god shelvesflowers used to be only black and white but lately they are usina l l colors and some f resh f lowers a l soIn one place they ippjce Japj^pese bath tubs. These aabout three feet deep and have a compartment containing a firethat heats the whole bath. They squat in the tub^of very hot wup to their neck which warms them up aftex si t t ing in their col

houses. However they bathe very- frequently in the summer alsoThese are a few of the shops peculiar to Japan. There armany others such as the tea shop those selling only kimona cloetc. but space does not permit telling of these now Perhaps

    can do so i n ano t h e r l tt r
