Over the past decade we have been building on the work of the previous 30 years to develop Farnham Maltings as a vibrant, ambitious, contemporary organisation that contributes to the shape and character of our town.

All over the country the lives of millions of people are enhanced by the many kinds of arts and culture they explore, take part in, experience, create and enjoy. They influence the design of our high streets, the food that we eat, our parks and libraries, the music and dance that is offered to our children in schools.

As we work at building a contemporary theatre programme, help over 50 young people to take their first step into employment through the Creative Employment Programme, support the 1000-strong U3A to undertake the extraordinary programme of learning that they offer, prepare to celebrate a month of craft throughout October and launch the next stage of the building improvements, we want to remind people of the everyday and special contribution the arts make to all of us. And, as we move towards a general election, that it matters more than ever that we recognise, and express to our politicians and each other, how much we care about the quality of our lives.

ACE Award news

We have been successful in our bid to Arts Council England for funding 2015–2018. This will allow us to continue our work to improve the range, quality and audience for theatre across the region. During this period we will focus on three strands of work:· make our own work for rural communities and produce a group of artists and companies to make and tour contemporary theatre.· programme and underwrite theatre through a network of 150 venues across the south east.· lead caravan as a programme designed to help more theatre companies to work internationally.

We are delighted to have been asked to lead this work and know that the relationships, learning and confidence it will encourage will benefit us locally.

This symbol highlights events that are part of the mind full maltings programme. Many of the mind full maltings activities are hosted in partnership with other local organisations, and are programmed to better welcome elders and those with dementia into our building. Events range from classic film screenings to music groups, with a relaxed atmosphere and free or subsidised tickets to promote accessibility for all.

October sees the return of Farnham Craft Town Month, celebrating Farnham’s craft heritage and the contemporary makers based in Farnham. Listen, watch and get creative as Farnham Town Council, the New Ashgate Gallery, Craft Study Centre, Farnham Maltings, 318 Ceramics, and the Museum of Farnham come together to host this celebration of craft, with activities suitable for all. This printmaking workshop will introduce and explore the similarities and differences between woodcut and wood engraving. Woodcut involves cutting into the side plank of a piece of wood using gouges, often creating bold designs. Wood engraving is much finer and involves carving into the end-grain. We will explain how to prepare images, transfer them onto the wood, make marks with the different tools and produce a selection of finished prints to take home. We work with a number of companies and individual artists in the production of their work, sometimes as a collaboration or in co-production.

Touring

We tour our own work and that of our associate companies, support a network of rural venues across Surrey and are continuing to build relationships with small scale theatres and art centres.

We are partners in PASS – Circus Channel, a collaboration with eight French and English creation centres designed to support the development and touring of new contemporary circus funded through the interreg programme.

We manage no strings attached – a grant scheme for the south east region that offers awards between £500 and £1000 to help young people, aged between 18 and 25, make their first piece of theatre. This year, in partnership with Unlimited, we are offering a specific no strings attached grant to ensure young disabled artists are supported. Hiring space

This unique building has a variety of different spaces for hire with capacities ranging from 15–500. We can offer ideal accommodation for parties, conferences, workshops and performances. Disabled access

The Great Hall, Cellar Bar, Barley Room, Tindle Studio, Tannery and Café Bar are fully accessible to wheelchair users via the lift and the Great Hall can accommodate up to five wheelchairs. There is a fully accessible toilet and four dedicated parking spaces. Assistance Dogs (UK) are welcome. If you require assistance to enter and leave the building please bring an able-bodied companion, who will be entitled to a complimentary ticket (subject to availability). If you require an induction loop system, or have any other requirements, please inform the box office at the time of booking so we can make your visit more enjoyable.

Visual Story

Available on our website and at the box office, we have a Visual Story which aims to support children, young people and adults with autism, communication difficulties, and other learning disabilities. It can be used to help them better access and understand their experience in the building.

Tickets can be purchased via our website (powered by Savoy Systems Ltd.) 24 hours a day, until 3 hours before a performance. Visitors are able to choose their seat online for many shows. Membership discounts and other benefits are automatically applied once tickets have been selected. There is a 50p postal charge should you choose that option. Visitors are able to make a donation to the Maltings (Registered Charity no. 954753), via our booking site.

Methods of payment

The box office accepts Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and cheques. All ticket bookings made on a card through the box office and online are subject to a £1 card charge.

Cheques should be made payable to ‘Farnham Maltings Association’. The cheque guarantee card number, card expiry date, and card guarantee limit must be written on the back of the cheque. Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope or add 50p if you wish your tickets to be posted to you.

Refunds and exchanges

Tickets cannot be refunded once paid for unless a performance is postponed or cancelled. Exchanges can be made for another performance of the same show subject to availability and a handling charge of £2 per booking.

Concessions

Senior citizens, full time students and people who are registered disabled are entitled to concession prices where stated. This is abbreviated in the listings as ‘conc.’.

For 40 years, the Maltings Monthly Market has been a long-established part of the town’s life. It has grown to encompass everything from antiques and jewellery, to craft and local handmade produce, restored furniture and unique cards. With our café open to provide hot food and drinks, it’s the perfect way to spend a Saturday.

Once again we are delighted to be screening the Met’s new season of innovative and spectacular productions.

Featuring a selection of the best-loved titles in opera, including Verdi’s Macbeth and Bizet’s Carmen, the season offers a dazzling array of tragic and comic moments, performed by some of the world’s greatest performers. Please see pages 18, 23, 27, 29 and 37 for details of this autumn’s screenings; further Met operas will be screened in 2015. The Met bookmark will be available in the foyer for at-a-glance details of the full season.

This autumn marks the first anniversary of our Met HD Opera Group. Based around the Met’s live programme, and organised in partnership with the first ever international Met HD Ambassador, Jacqueline Boronow Danson, the group provides opportunities for opera lovers in and around Farnham to exchange views and engage with each other beyond the screenings.

We are delighted that so many of you have so enthusiastically taken the opportunity to share your passion for opera with other like-minded people, and to sign-up to the Maltings’ Met HD Opera Group mailing list for exclusive announcements and bonus content relating to the Met HD season.

The success of the Maltings’ Met HD Opera Group clearly highlights a real love of opera within the local community, something we are truly passionate about and eager to share. In the coming seasons we are hoping to engage schools as part of an educational programme to bring the unique experience of opera to young people.
