Welcome to farOpen Studios 2018 Artists and makers from the ancient and beautiful Forest of Dean, situated between the Wye and Severn rivers, warmly invite you to visit them. Description My work is predominately stained glass, from windows through hangings to screens with mixed media panels. The paper I make is used in different ways including book making, reconstituting it to be incorporated in mixed media work. The print making ranges from pictures to embellishment for other work. The jewellery and the weaving also get incorporated into other work – if they are not standing on their own! Directions Off A40 between Longhope and Huntley. Take road signed Cliffords Mesne and May Hill. A hundred or so yards to small cross roads, straight over, hedge on right is mine. Follow it to the entrance. Round about drive down to house and studio.

Description Art. Yoga. Meditation. Paintings. Drawings. Mixed media. Inspired by the strength and beauty of the human form & the creative connection between body, mind and spirit. Interesting combinations of materials, oils or acrylic paint with graphite sticks, pastels and collage-works on paper and canvas. Leah also uses Art as a therapeutic practice with her long term student Jane, as part of maintaining positive mental health. Some of Jane’s work will also be on show.
Directions From Blakeney (A48) follow sign to Soudley and the Dean Heritage Centre. Follow the road for several miles until you see Soudley village sign, over bridge, immediate right at phone box. Continue to end of track and take left hand drive. From Littledean, take Soudley Road opposite the village shop- chippy on the corner. Continue several miles until you come to a crossroads. Turn left. You will see the White Horse Pub - I did the pub sign! Continue through the village, past the Dean Heritage Centre on RH side. Take next left at phone box before bridge. Continue as above.

Description My bold, abstract paintings appeal to the intuitive and open minded. They encourage you to pause, and experience the calm of being present in a moment. Largely a self-taught painter, my process is intuitive and meditative, an unfolding of thought in shape and colour; decisions are made where brush meets paint. Directions Please look out for signs to the studio as the postcode on SatNav will take you past the property. Take the Itton/Devauden Road (B4293) from the roundabout at the bottom of Chepstow Racecourse. Uplands is the first house on the left, on the brow of the hill.

Description Philip is a watercolour artist who specialises in Landscapes and animals. Each picture aims to capture a sense of the short lived nature of a particular time, place, subject and light. Philip’s style is to simplify the subject, leaving the viewer’s imagination space to interpret the picture in ways that are important to themselves. Directions Timberlands is situated in Brockweir, just off the A466 Monmouth to Chepstow road. We are just up the hill from the bridge and pub in Brockweir. Outside we have a large stone wall topped with a trellis, and a blue shepherd’s hut visible from the road. Parking on road outside.

Description With my photography I aim to capture those fleeting moments of wild life and nature not only throughout this beautiful area but wherever I’ve been fortunate enough to travel. My preference is to have these images printed professionally on brushed aluminium - its reflective quality further enhances, I feel. Images are also printed on to top quality archive paper ensuring their longevity. Directions Once in Penallt follow signs to the Birches. This will lead you down hill then turn left down steep 1:4 hill and follow road round at bottom of hill. Turn right down track at Birches Farm. Birch Tree Well is the first drive on the right.

Description Working mainly in acrylics, my current challenge lies in exploring my reaction to the landscape. Applying the medium in layers of varying consistencies I strive to capture the mood and energy of the space and my reaction towards any given place via colour and mark. Claude Monet’s words ‘Never forget the first impression by which we are moved’ have much resonance for me. Sometimes I work from photographs, but I often find the work I am most happy with develops from memory, and a list of words helps identify feelings and emotions that are then translated to colour, mark and texture. Visits to California, Lake Tahoe and Scotland have been truly inspiring.
Directions Parking at Minsterworth Village Hall is best. Cross the road and walk down Bury Lane (signposted to the church). Oak Tree Cottage is up the first drive on the left, and is the property on the left. The studio is in the integral garage.

Description We are makers of fused, slumped and stained glass pieces. Our range includes dishes, vases, wall art, mirrors and jewellery. All our pieces are made using a variety of techniques, which we’d be delighted to show you. Directions Our studio is located in our garden. We can be found on Baptist Way, Ruardean Hill, just opposite the Baptist Chapel.

Description Daniel Casey is a self taught artist. He takes an expressive and experimental approach to his abstract paintings. His work is varied, usually brightly coloured and inspired in many different ways. Directions The studio address is about half way down Ormerod Road on the junction with Danes Hill. Description Christine works in wool, making a variety of items, from garments, accessories and soft furnishings to tapestries and toys. She loves colour, and exploring processes, whether that is through felting, machine knitting, appliqué, or embroidery. Christine runs award-winning felt making courses from her workshop. Directions: DO NOT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS FROM SAT NAVS TAKING YOU UP BLAKENEY HILL ROAD. STAY ON NEW ROAD. From LYDNEY: Take the A48 towards Gloucester. Just after the Cock Inn , left turn into New Road towards PARKEND and 'GO APE' . Look out for the post and telephone boxes on the right hand side. When you see them, park! Take the path which runs up the hill on the right hand side of the telephone box. Go past the row of terraced cottages on the right, and Kent Cottage is straight ahead in the triangle in centre of the path as it divides . From GLOUCESTER: Take the A48 towards Chepstow. Go through Blakeney Village, Take the first turn on the right into New Road sign posted for PARKEND and GO APE. Then follow instructions above.

Description This year Dorota Rapacz is in residence at Lydney Harbour. The Yorkley-based artist is going to work on an alabaster stone carving in the Old Mortuary building. She will also be exhibiting her preparatory drawings and some other sculptures relating to the carving, which is called PARADISE. Directions Lydney Harbour is a place steeped in history and heritage. The Old Mortuary is to the left, before you reach the Yacht Club Building. Description Drop the Weasel is a Lydney based creative business run by Lizzie Powell. With a passion for nature and a talent for art it’s no great surprise that Lizzie has found herself as an artist creating work inspired by the Forest and the countryside around her.

Description Eileen is a mixed media textile artist, she produces work which initially appears abstract but a closer look reveals pictures overlaying an abstract background. Description Oil paintings inspired by people and their surroundings. The workplace is a regular theme, capturing people engaged and focussed in what they are passionate about. Spontaneous and in the expressionist style with bold colours on canvas and panels. Directions From Gloucester head on the B4215 towards Newent past Highnam. After Rudford take the left hand turn into Tibberton onto Buttermilk Lane. After a mile and a bit take the left hand turn up Huntley Road, Tibberton Court is the right hand turn at the brow of the hill (before the church). From Newent head towards Gloucester on the B4215 turning right into Tibberton onto Buttermilk Lane and follow as above. From Huntley turn left by the Red Lion Pub and follow this road for about two miles turning right into Tibberton onto Huntley Road. Just past the church and Church Room play ground turn left up Tibberton Court Drive.

Description Michelle Hickman, aka Furzie, creates needle-felted 3-D sculptures from wool. Description I work with wax medium and a heat gun; burning in, manipulating and building up layers of pigmented wax. This process is known as ‘encaustic’ and gives an intriguing quality of depth and a tactile nature to my artwork. I look forward to introducing you to the wonderful world of wax! Description Ceramics, and sculpture, including garden and landscape sculpture, and tree-based projects. Commissions and collaborations undertaken. Earthenware, stoneware and smoke-fired ceramics and sculpture can be viewed in both the garden and the studio. Examples of photography by Rowan Spray are also on show.
Directions From Ruardean: On entering the village of Ruardean from the West, i.e. from the road up from the Wye valley, take the first turning to the right. Or, entering the village from the East, take the last turning on the left, just before leaving the village. Then take a fork to the left signposted the Pludds, and once on the Pludds follow the Open Studios signs. From Brierley on the A4136: Coming from the West, turn left after Brierley garage and before the bus stop - you want the first proper road, signed to the Pludds. Coming from the East, turn second right, after Brierley bus stop shelter on the right, on road signed to the Pludds. Once on the Pludds follow the Open Studios signs.

Lisa Dear Artworks Description Lisa's latest collection is inspired by combining words, imagination and her love of colour. These paintings capture beautiful moments from her father-in-law’s poetry and create a visual and abstracted expression through the layering of oil paint on canvas. They are framed in fleece to accentuate the comforting and warming feeling from the wonderful words. This is in strong contrast to my close up flower artworks, which I am still loving to paint. Sara Rickard Description Having lived in the Forest of Dean for over 16 years Sara has become more inspired by the natural world. She develops embroidery from research of historical, cultural and first hand observation. Many of the Embroidery works on show this year have been made in 2018 and have not been shown before. Sara is preparing for a big one person show in November at Ruskin Mill, Nailsworth, Stroud so is excited about seeing a large collection of her work together then. Description Some of my work this year explores the mystery of Alice’s adventures when she climbs through the looking glass. I plan to use mirrors to reflect shadowy images and words. There will be an exhibition, ‘Alice’ in ‘The Gallery Upstairs’, which is behind my workshop. Work by Mollie Meager, Sue Carr, Bill Robson, James Wright and Birgitta Engel. Description Nicole’s jewellery collections offer unexpected and elegant designs, as well as light-hearted and entertaining twists.
Nicole will be offering taster activities, including texturing metal and maybe even a spot of soldering! Please wear appropriate footwear if you’d like to join in – people wearing flip-flops/open-toed shoes won’t be permitted to take part.
Directions Nicole’s studio is set back from the road through some black gates on the right hand side (travelling from St Whites Road). Please make your way down to the house which is a forest stone cottage, taking care on the path and steps.

Description I am a painter and printmaker, and these days like to make reduction linocut prints. My work explores the strangeness of ordinary life and domestic detail and often involves images of women. I’m interested too in the legends and narratives that link us to one another and to the past.
Directions From the A48 in Lydney take the B4231 signposted towards Bream and Coleford, almost opposite Tesco. Continue up the hill and out of the town. Take the first turning on the right towards Brockhollands and Whitecroft. Follow this small road until you come to a T-junction. Turn left. Within half a mile you will pass Bowson Road on your right. Carry on up the hill, and Henley Road is on your right. Rose Cottage is on the corner at the top of the little hill. Please park on the common opposite the house. From Monmouth take the A466 towards Chepstow. Continue for 2 miles. At Redbrook, turn left and continue through Newland and Clearwell. When you reach a T-junction, turn right onto the B4228, then almost straightaway turn left onto the B4231. After entering Bream take the first turning on the left into New Road. At the T junction turn left and drive past the crossroads and the school. Then turn oblique right into Whitecroft Road. Henley Road is the 4th turning on the left, just where the trees begin. Breams Eaves Cottage is at the top of the little hill, on the corner. Please park on the common, opposite the house.

Description Nature has always been a source of inspiration. To realize one’s sensations through colour and form has been her search in painting. Description I am a coppice worker/green woodworker and I make bespoke items from locally sourced wood from sustainably managed woodlands; I manage these myself using low impact methods. I use traditional techniques and tools to make a range of beautifully handcrafted products. Description Sophie is a metalworker and restorer She’s developed her metalworking techniques with specialism in raising and lost-wax casting. Her contemporary art work is inspired by the contours of the landscapes; by taking casts of textured surfaces she combines the intense textures of macro and micro patterns. They are then developed into one-off sculptural landscape forms. She also makes a range of contemporary silver jewellery with semi precious stones.

Description My work includes textiles, embroidery, felting, wirework, beading and clay all topped off with gemstones and pearls. The jewellery is designed and created by myself in my own workshop so that you can get the 'exquisite look ' with genuine gemstones and freshwater pearls but without the extravagant price tag. Description ‘Gaby Devitt Woven Textiles’ and ‘Rhian Wyman Design’ are both weavers in Longhope. Both brands produce products that are one of a kind, no two items are identical. Description The Grange Pottery is part of the Camphill Village Trust and offers opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and other special needs to learn a skill and contribute towards our finished products. Our work is mainly functional tableware produced using a jigger and jolly. Also hand-thrown pieces fired to stoneware in a variety of our own coloured glazes. We also make some bespoke items through various techniques including throwing, coiling and slab building.
Directions Located on Littledean Road. From Newnham, the Grange Village (signed) is on the left hand side. Entrance over the cattle grid, turn left and follow the road round to the blue building with Pottery sign outside. Some parking is available outside the building.
