LETTER FROM THE CHIEF

Dear Collectors,

Welcome to this edition of Fascination. In this edition, we have some exciting news to share with you! United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) has achieved a Guinness book of World Records for its Universal Declaration of Human Rights souvenir sheet, which was issued on 27 October 2017, for the most words on a postage stamp: 1,969. UNPA is very proud of this accomplishment.

For the remainder of 2018, UNPA has a full programme scheduled.

In August, UNPA will continue its very popular World Heritage series focusing on six sites in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. UNPA will also issue three beautifully designed prestige booklets that tell all about these incredible places.

In October, UNPA will issue three mini-sheets of stamps to commemorate International Music Day. The stamps illustrate the musical instruments of brass and woodwinds, strings and percussion and were designed by Sergio Baradat of graphic design team of UNPA.

UNPA will also issue three definitive stamps in October that feature the famous sculpture at United Nations Headquarters, Non-Violence.

We also have some interesting special event sheets that are featured in this bulletin. In September, a New York sheet featuring “Thomas and Friends” will be issued as well as a special event mini-sheet for the Thirty-fifth Aisian International Stamp Exhibition (AISE) in Macau, which was printed using a special laser-cutting technique. In October, a New York sheet to commemorate the festival of Diwali will be issued, and a special event mini-sheet will be released for the Verona Stamp Show in Italy.

The 2018 Annual Collection folders will also be issued, as well as two Vienna revalued pre-stamped postcards.

We hope that you enjoy adding these new stamps and products to your collection.

NEWS AND NOTEWORTHYUNPA ACHIEVES GUINNESS WORLD RECORD!

UNPA achieved an official Guinness world record for the most words on a postage stamp: 1,969 words. This stamp is one of three in a souvenir sheet issued by UNPA on 27 October 2017 to commemorate the translation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into 500 languages.

ISRAEL 2018 WORLD STAMP CHAMPIONSHIP

UNPA has decided not to issue the Israel 2018 World Stamp Championship stamp sheet as previously advised. Instead, UNPA has produced a special show card for this event. Please find below the image of the show card, which can be purchased by using the order form attached to this Fascination.

THAILAND OVERPRINT — THAILAND 2018 WORLD STAMP EXHIBITION — SPECIAL EVENT MINI-SHEET

On 28 November 2018, UNPA will issue an overprinted special event mini-sheet to commemorate the Thailand 2018 World Stamp Exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand. The stamp sheet is the $1.15 Dance sheet from 2016 International Dance Day.

UNITED NATIONS STAMPS USED FOR MAILINGUnited Nations stamps in United States dollar denominations are valid for postage only if mailed at United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA. Stamps in Swiss franc denominations are valid for postage only if mailed at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Stamps in euro denominations are valid for postage only if mailed at the International Centre in Vienna, Austria.

PRICESStamps are sold at face value. UN/Geneva and UN/Vienna stamps are sold at dollar equivalent rates, rounded up to the nearest cent. The dollar equivalents of the euro and Swiss franc denomination stamps are subject to fluctuating exchange rates.

The next column asks for a description of each item as a cross-reference. In this space, you may also indicate any specific requests, e.g., special marginal inscription (M.I.) positions. Fill in the price in the appropriate column. Multiply the price by the number required of that particular item and enter the resulting figure in the “amount” column on the order form. Total your order and indicate whether registration of the order is requested. Add postage and handling charges. Enclose your remittance, and mail it to the indicated address.

2018 ANNUAL COLLECTION FOLDERS

The New York, Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders of single mint stamps issued in 2018 will be released on 1 October 2018. The folders are printed in full colour, and they provide information about each issue in English, French and German. The mint stamps are not affixed inside the albums, as mounts are provided for this purpose.

It should be noted that the 2018 Flag Series and 2018 Endangered Species series WILL NOT be included in the individual New York, Geneva or Vienna annual collection folders. They are contained in their own separate folders.

The last day of sale of the 2016 New York, Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders will be 1 October 2018.

In honour of UNISPACE+50 and to celebrate more than 50 years of international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, the United Nations Postal Administration issued six stamps and three souvenir sheets that represent humankind’s achievements in space, and the benefits that space exploration brings to all of us here on Earth. The stamps include images of human space flight and space technology, Earth observation images, space exploration and studies of space.

International Music Day is celebrated on 1 October each year. The day was established in 1975 by the International Music Council (IMC), which was founded by UNESCO in 1949. Music is essential to many of our lives and is a powerful platform that brings people together across cultures. The main objectives of the Day are to celebrate the importance of music and musicians worldwide and to promote its value in society by building peace and understanding through a common language.

UNPA will issue three mini-sheets of twelve stamps to celebrate International Music Day on 1 October 2018. The stamps, featuring brass and woodwinds, strings and percussion, were designed by Sergio Baradat (United Nations).

On 2 October 2018, UNPA will issue three definitive stamps featuring images of Non-Violence. This well-known sculpture for peace and non-violence was created in 1980 by the Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd as a tribute to John Lennon. Non-Violence sculptures are placed in more than 30 strategic locations worldwide, including the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne and the Peace Park in Beijing.

The Non-Violence sculpture is used as a symbol by the Non-Violence Project Foundation, a non-profit organization promoting peace and social change through education; to inspire, motivate and engage young people to understand how to solve conflicts peacefully. The artwork for the 1¢ definitive stamp is an engraving by Martin Mörck (Norway). The €0,90 and €2,30 definitive stamps are painted gun sculptures that are part of the Non-Violence Art Project. THOMAS & FRIENDS™ – NEW YORK SPECIAL EVENT SHEET

On 19 October 2018, the United Nations Postal Administration will issue a New York special event sheet to commemorate the festival of Diwali.

Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is the joyous and popular festival of lights, which is celebrated in India and across the world by followers of many faiths. During the five-day celebration, clay lamps, known as diyas, are lit to signify the victory of good over evil. The festival also symbolizes the start of a new year for many communities.

The sheet in the denomination of $1.15 contains ten stamps and tabs featuring festive lights and the symbolic lamps known as diyas.

The background of the sheet features the United Nations Headquarters building illuminated with the message of “Happy Diwali” to celebrate the spirit of the festival.

DIWALI — NEW YORK SPECIAL EVENT SHEET

On 21 September 2018, UNPA will issue a 3-stamp special event mini-sheet to commemorate the Macao 2018 - Thirty-fifth Asian International Stamp Exhibition in Macau, PR China. The stamp sheet was designed by Ye Luying (China). The sheet is composed of three denominated stamps ($1.15, CHF 2,00 and €1,80) and features a special laser-cutting technique. A quantity of 18,000 sheets were printed by Cartor Security Printing (France).

The background of the sheet depicts a Chinese story in ancient times called Hua Mulan, about a girl who joined the army instead of her old father, dressing as a man to do so. The illustration inspired by the Cantonese opera of Hua Mulan where the protagonist was depicted by famous Cantonese opera actresses Madam Lang Yunyu and Guo Feng. The three stamps feature judge Bao Zheng, general Guan Yu and Hua Mulan. They are meant to represent justice, loyalty, righteousness, courage and equality.

On 12 September 2018, UNPA will issue a special event sheet to commemorate “All Aboard for Global Goals” featuring Thomas & Friends™. The United Nations and Mattel, Inc have collaborated to incorporate a number of the Sustainable Development Goals into the storylines of the animated children’s television series Thomas & Friends.

The sheet of ten stamps in the denomination of $1.15 feature images of Thomas & Friends™ and includes six of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals – specifically #4 Quality Education, #5 Gender Equality, #6 Clean Water and Sanitation, #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, #12 Responsible Consumption and Production and #15 Life on Land.

The new movie “Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie™”, as well as a new television series will feature content about the SDG Goals to inspire young audiences.
