Fearless and fancy freeSpring is here, and it’s the perfect excuse to update your wardrobe this season with the latest hot trends. Not only will it lift your spirits, but your style as well.

Think vibrant for Spring/Summer 2011. Expect to see bright colours (we welcome tangerine), fl oral prints, fl owing fabrics to crisp white, nude tones and gorgeous denim. While the skinny jean remains, a revamp of the 70s style brings back the high-waisted, fl ared leg trend for the warmer days ahead.

Look out for fearless combinations of wacky and wonderful colourful prints on T-shirts, dresses, tops and accessories. It’s time to brighten up your wardrobe ladies, so get excited and splash out this spring/summer.

The bolder the better, with stripes in strong colours like reds, yellows and blues.

The long maxi skirt in lighter more fl oaty fabrics continues through for summer, and best you purchase a one-piece swimsuit (bold colours and patterns) for a deliciously hot look this season. Pair them with a maxi skirt or Kaftan dress if wanting a cover up and you’re on your way!

Now that’s put a bounce in your step, hasn’t it?

Stripe it this seasonThey have been all over the runways for Spring/Summer 2011, and the wider the stripes the better. No; it won’t make you look bigger. Surprisingly, stripes give the illusion of making you slimmer, so vamp up your wardrobe with rich colourful stripes in blues, greens, yellows and reds.

Hello sailor is still a hot look this season, but why not branch out from your sailor blue and white stripes and go bold? International fashion designers Marc Jacobs and Prada are celebrating wide stripes for summer, and you will fi nd plenty of choice amongst the High Street stores.

Not so sure about stripes? Then don’t go all out in them. Instead keep half of your outfi t colour blocked for a simple but effective look. Pair your stripes with denim – an oversized T-shirt with frayed denim shorts creates a relaxed summer feel.

Retro is back – 70s style but with a re-vamp.While skinny jeans remain a popular staple in the wardrobe this season, the high-waisted, wide, fl ared and fuller leg is a welcoming contrast. Go all out and embrace the look with patterns, accessories and fl oaty fabric tops. Marc Jacobs welcomes the 70s in glamour dresses. The jumpsuit/playsuit is back, for those fashionistas who want to be a little daring and playful!

Floral explosionFrom dresses, skirts and tops to accessories, romantic fl oral prints (big or small) remain this season. Look out for coloured fl owers on maxi dresses.

Colour blockingWhen it comes to colour blocking, the brighter the better, and the hottest colour trend this summer is tangerine (have no more than three colours on the go). Avoid pairing them with black. Instead, opt for neutral tones.

Purely whiteIf you can’t get your head around going bold this summer then keep it simple by going all white in a feminine white dress or shirt dress. Not only does it ooze purity and sophistication, but it’s a fantastic crisp alternative to the brights.

ClashDon’t be shy to mix and match colours with patterns. Wear your stripes with prints, such as a striped top with a leopard or patterned skirt. Make a statement and clash those patterns. Wacky and wonderful international designer Vivienne Westwood loves creating this look with no rules!

Carefree & easy A hot item this summer, and with the sheer maxi in the fold it’s sexier than ever. They are easy to wear and you can pull it off for day or evening wear in an instant! There are lots of varieties out there from petite prints to bold prints, lightweight and lined, stretchy fabrics to hemmed or unhemmed, see through, and A-line. Popular labels like Ketz-ke and Cybele have included the long maxi skirts in their range.

A tank top goes great with your lightweight maxi skirts. It can still get chilly in spring, so don a crop jacket for an extra layer to keep you warm and super stylie.

Another option is to wear a loose fl owing top with your fi tted long skirt, and for an extra layer pair it with a long cardigan.

The maxi is elegant and feminine.

Spice it up for those social summer nights - metallic maxi dresses are a hot look for evening.

An alternative to the long maxiThe midi (mid-length) in a skirt or dress is this season’s comeback. The length is a winner because it fl atters most body types without baring too much. Trelise Cooper and Karen Walker are all over it this summer.

Whatever the design, there are plenty of options to suit your body shape for a demure look.

Karen Walker

Walker styleInternationally acclaimed New Zealand fashion designer Karen Walker was in Christchurch last month to celebrate the arrival of the Karen Walker 2012 Summer Collection at Rouche in Merivale Mall.

She describes her Spring/Summer 2011 Collection ‘Ordinary Day, Perfect Day’ as “colourful, feminine and whimsical, and a signal that summer is on the way.”

Walker’s collection was inspired by the dance scene in Northern England in the late 70s; specifi cally a legendary club there called the Wigan Casino.

“We loved the idea of working class kids getting dressed up in their Saturday night best to go dancing all night,” says Walker.

The designer brings classic clothing alive with her whimsical prints and eye for detail.

There are plenty of frills and ruffl es in this range from sheath dresses to even hats, along with fl oral fl oaty fabrics and bright orange, blue and mustard colours.

One of the most important accessories for spring and summer is of course sunglasses. This season the styles range from sporty to classic, rock and pop. The frames are smaller than the oversized frames of past seasons. The novelty of this season is coloured frames.

Sunglasses not only defend our eyes from the harsh UV rays but also complete our summer outfi ts. So they are an accessory and a necessity. The trend this season is still your usual oversized frames however they are not as large.

We are seeing classic and simple lady-like sunglasses everywhere this season. Frames are moving away from extravagant shapes and sizes to a chic solid frame that is fl attering for the face. Try out a simple circular solid frame with a dark lens for that classic look.

Take a trip back to the 50’s and 60’s this season with cat-eye sunglasses. This trend particularly suits women with heart-shaped or square faces and is a sure way to ensure you stand out from the crowd this summer. The chic, statement glasses are here to stay with colours such as glamorous black, purple, ivory, khaki green, burgundy and blue. Those who prefer to blend in will be happy to know that aviator and oversized retro sunglasses are still big for this season.

Aviator sunglasses are easy to wear and match many styles while retro sunglasses in black, white or patterns add glamour to any summer outfi t. Sunglasses Hut is stocking the ever popular Ray-Ban collection with their new twist of interchangeable lenses. This provides a more affordable way to have several pairs of sunglasses. After all everyone likes a bit of variety at times.

It’s time to be brave this summer and step out to the beach or pool in a range of geometric, African style prints and colours.

First, let’s talk colour. Fuchsia is very much in this summer along with jewel tones such as emerald green, purples and royal blue. These are a range of colours that can suit any skin tone.

With a fun range of tile designs, colour and block prints, patterned swimwear is the way to go this summer. You may even like to take a trip on the wild side and try out the animal prints on offer too for a sexier and more daring look.

The revival of the one piece is chic and glamorous. Variations on this style include cut outs, monokinis and stylish maillots, which will be gracing pool sides and shorelines this summer. Your usual bikini will also feature with a lowered leg line embracing a retro look in a modern way.

Other styles designed to suit every body shape include tankinis, swimwear with built in bras, adjustable straps and stomach control, so you can feel sexy and confi dent regardless of your shape or size.

This season’s swimwear trends in Seafolly and Jets defi nitely have a 50’s infl uence. Features include boyleg one pieces, hi-rise bikini pants with either a bustier or bikini top. Polka dots, fi ne stripes and gingham prints feature strongly. Safari prints in both swimwear and daywear/beachwear also make a strong statement this summer.

AnimaliaYou can play it safe with leopard prints or be daring and mix it up a bit. You don’t have to be dressed head to toe, there are plenty of tribal accessories in the high street stores from bags to fashion jewellery and shoes that will still bring out the tiger in you!

EmbellishmentsSimple or extreme, tassels are back. Fashion designers, Roberto Cavalli and Louis Vuitton embraced the tassle trim in their Spring/Summer 2011 Collections – the perfect way to accessorize any outfi t!

Feathers in an array of colours and sizes were noted on the Spring/Summer 2011 runways – these add a vibrant touch to dresses, skirts, cropped jackets and accessories.

Zambesi Summer 2011, brings uniform detailing with the freedom and simplicity of fl uid fabrics and seraphic colours.

Fabrics speak boldly. Details are kept clean and subtle and although many pieces have oversized proportions they are complemented by fabric choices including satins and cotton lawn.

Jackets are both structured and relaxed and parts are exaggerated in key pieces like the wide-legged pants that appear in both the men’s and women’s collections. Lingerie shapes are uncomplicated in luxe fabrics, and key signature pieces work well for lightweight layering.

Innocent shades of oyster, white, cream and a strident nude variety, underpin the colour palette contrasting with brilliant crimson and orange, and fun fl uorescent accessories.

The women’s collection is all about the luxury of the cloth – from hand-knotted embroidery to washed canvas. The seventies exert a subtle infl uence, from mirror-ball sequins to a classic masculine jacket reinterpreted for women’s wear.

Key shapes include boldly proportioned overalls, drawstring and billow-back detailing on dresses, a soft take on a vintage jacket, Jodhpur patch- detailed pants, bias lingerie skirts, and distorted cotton knits.

Want to make an impact this summer? Just add the latest accessories to your wardrobe for an instant update!

Bags shine in fresh bright colours. Adding a new coloured bag to your collection is an easy, instant way to update your look. Go for neon blue, pink, orange, green or lemon to carry your belongings in style. Hot styles this summer include the clutch and purse. They are easy to carry around and perfect for evening. A classic leather piece is a must for your wardrobe due to its versatility. Larger bags are also prominent this season with the trend being the short strap, so you can still fi t absolutely everything in it.

Wavy-edged and panama hats are perfect beach companions this season. They provide protection from the sun while still giving you an elegant look. Pair these hats with high-waisted pants or a maxi-dress to turn heads.

Big, bold jewellery is another top pick. Collared necklaces, feathered or long dangly earrings and colourful bracelets all make a statement. Geometric, multi-layered and tribal elements add interest to your summer style. Bold and chunky necklaces make a great addition to any dress or top to add that extra something to your outfi t. Cuffs are a must have on everyone’s wrist this summer; they can be worn with a casual or dressy outfi t. Lastly, the more you can fi t on your fi ngers the better - chunky rings are big this season so it is time to wear all your favourite rings at once.

Skinny belts are an attractive way to highlight your silhouette. Team an elegant black or silver belt with an evening outfi t to show off your summer body. For a more casual approach a tan or sandstone coloured belt can be all you need to complete your look.

Beautiful brides make sure you steal the show on your big day by incorporating the hottest new trends into your bridal look!

The soft romantic look continues to dominate bridal looks this summer. Soft fl owing fabrics like organza and tulle are paired with lace while fl owers, sashes and ruffl es add depth and texture.

Full-skirts add a dreamy dimension to gowns, especially when teamed with pearl or crystal embellished bodices. Modifi ed A-line designs are also popular, along with strapless dresses that accentuate the neckline and draw attention to gorgeous jewelry.

Black and white is very popular this season. A black satin sash adds a modern twist to a white dress and black bridesmaids dresses are another hot trend.

Shorter trains and veils are enjoying a resurgence, along with pretty boleros and shawls. Lightweight fabrics including organza, lace, tulle, and chiffons make perfect wraps for a summer bride.

Pearls, rhinestones and crystal remain the top choices for necklaces and earrings. Crystal brooches provide a beautiful accent when worn on the dress or in the hair.

Hair styles follow the romantic trend with long waves or loose styles pulled back from the face are popular choices. Add sparkle with crystal hairpins and headbands. Silk fl owers are also a natural choice with some brides using a single silk fl ower for a simple classical look.

Avon Bridals owner Fran Broad tells us the trends for this coming wedding season incorporate a lot of the perennial favourites but with a soft and feminine twist. Strapless gowns with fi tted and ruched bodices and A-line skirts ranging from slim line to full ball-gown styles are still popular. However, the detailing is more towards exquisite lace being used as appliqué features or as full overlays, embellished with Swarovski crystals and pearls for a very romantic look.

Fabrics range from soft and fl owing chiffons through to luxurious silks and interesting taffetas and satins. Traditional white and ivory colours are still the most likely choice. However, soft shades of silver and oyster are making an appearance, as are contrast colours being used to accent. Beaded belts, coloured belts adorned with fl owers and sheer lace straps are all making an impact this season to complement gowns and add an element of indulgence.

Draping, layering and manipulated texture is a key look this season. Kaye Briden from Yazu Hair Lounge was delighted to spend a day in Auckland at Fashion Week with the L’Oreal I.D Team of New Zealand to work on the fashion models hair for the Sabatini show.

Kaye says the hair trends coming through for Spring/Summer 2011 are a blast from the past with 20s, 30s, late 50s and early 60s styles, that will follow through to next fall as well.

“Hair is big, lots of back combing and height around the crown. Tongs were used on nearly every model with fl icks everywhere. Beautiful buns were big and hair was pulled back off the face. Rows and rows of foils are out, one colour with soft panels, beautiful reds, coppers and pure blondes are back,” says Kay.

The make-up looks coming though were very fresh. Soft natural skin and lips with darker smoky eyes or a contrast provide an all natural look.

Sadly the lovely old building that contained Yazu didn’t survive February’s earthquake. However, Kaye has picked herself up and is currently renovating the new Yazu Hair Lounge. The new décor inspired by Grace Kelly and industrial New York will be unique with a French parlour feel.

transformyourself

Healthy, clear, smooth skin is the ingredient needed to look and feel your best. Transform Clinic focus on what you want and need. Improving skin quality is the fi rst step in looking good – whether it be with treatment products, professional treatments such as microdermabrasion, laser or IPL treatments.

As we age we lose volume in our faces – the most popular treatment of late is “volume enhancement” where dermal fi llers are used to replace the lost volume. Another popular treatment is the “Botulinum facelift”, where small amounts of product are used over the face to improve the smoothness of the skin and give a “lift” effect – the small amounts guarantee a natural result. There are also other treatments available to soften and improve the effects of aging, sun damage, unsightly blemishes, skin tags and moles.

To compliment the full range of appearance medicine treatments, Transform Clinic offer a full range of beauty therapy treatments, including make-up for that special occasion, Dermatech treatment facials, waxing, electrolysis and massage. To fi nd out what is best for you, go into Transform clinic for a complimentary consultation with their skin therapists or registered nurses.

Transform Clinic is open six days, with late nights Monday to Thursday. They offer privacy, confi dentiality and a highly professional service.

Step out in style this season and put your best foot forward in summer’s hottest footwear!

Bright colours are everywhere this summer and colour blocking is one of the hottest shoe trends. It’s easy to update your look with a bright splash of colour. You can go all out in a bright coloured peep toe sandal or test the waters with a mix of colour and neutrals.

This season also sees a return to 70s inspired footwear with platforms and wedges in new colours like mustard, burnt orange and tan. Styles range from sky-high heels perfect for hot summer nights through to more casual versions designed for lounging around the pool or beach.

Pair your wedges with a cute pair of shorts or skinny jeans. If they are patterned then keep your look simple and let your shoes shine!

Flatforms – a new hybrid fl at form of the platform, are set to be a huge hit this summer. They incorporate all the comfort of a sandal in a more fashion-forward design.

Wooden and corked heeled fl atforms are very popular and these can be dressed up or down with ease. Try pairing them with a maxi dress or a short skirt for a relaxed evening out.

Boy meets girl is another fun trend. For a cute, playful look opt for loafers, desert boots and brogues. These can be teamed with playful dresses or cropped jeans for a relaxed summer style. The great thing about this trend is that it’s transitional and will take you right through to autumn.

Trelise Cooper

It was ‘Not so Grim’ for MisteR, who wowed the crowd at NZFW, celebrated their 5th birthday, and launched their women’s line.

The title ‘Not so Grim’ was the name of their Autumn/Winter 2012 range (a metaphor for the designers journey this year in Christchurch) which was on show at fashion week.

The collection was inspired by Grimm Brothers fairy tales such as ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and Rumplestiltsken’. MisteR’s renowned fun and quirkiness remained with wonderful palettes of black, navy, deep greens, candy coated with pebble oranges and candy fl oss blue, lolly greens and purple icing to delight the crowd to their feet and receive a standing ovation!

MisteR’s much anticipated women’s range debuted at NZFW with squeals of delight from the audience, too!

The ‘Shoebox Diorama’ Summer 2011/12 Collection displays happy moods of fair-grounds, popcorn, candy fl oss and all the joys of summer. Playful checks are paired with polka dots and stripes, while abstract fl orals are matched with soft-to-the-touch denims.

For the men, reversible jackets, tailored waistcoats, blazers, pants and shorts are MisteR’s summer staples. Shirts are soft in luxurious cottons, which come in playful polka dots and checks to liven up any man’s working day!

*Crowd pleaser Trelise Cooper combined architectural type prints with a little romance in her collection at NZFW – strong and feminine.

AngelaStone

New Zealand fashion stylist Angela Stone has designed a new clothing range that debuted on the catwalk at NZ Fashion Week recently as part of the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Show.

Stone’s range, which is manufactured in Christchurch, showcased alongside other top Christchurch designers including Kathryn Leah Payne, Sakaguchi, Caroline Moore, MisteR, and Eclipse.

While most of the collections being showcased at Fashion Week were Winter 2012, Stone launched her Summer 2012 range, because she says it’s already been a “long winter” for Christchurch.

“My designs are defi nitely focused on colour and vibrancy, not only because after years of fashion styling I have seen women come alive when they are styled in bold colours that are right for their skin tone, but also because I wanted a sense of the spirit and colour of Christchurch that has prevailed to come through in my collection,” Stone says.

The Angela Stone range will be stocked at Curate, the new fashion gallery about to open in the heart of the Britomart precinct, or online exclusively through her website. www.angelastone.co.nz

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal show at NZ Fashion Week raised funds for the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal. It will also re-introduce Christchurch designers to the fashion community and offer the opportunity to support Christchurch designers by purchasing from their collections.

Kids grow up fast, so it’s time to go shopping and get some new summer gear they can fi t into for the warm days ahead.

Summer styles for kids wear this season are defi nitely not boring. For girls, the hot trend is lots of polka dots and stripes, and a new print dress is a must have for your little girl’s wardrobe. Pink, black and white colour combinations dominate this summer for little toddlers, but for older girls, expect to see plenty of navy blues, greens, purples and reds, so they can step out in colour and look fabulous.

For young boys expect to see palettes of greens, blues, and black. Stripes are making a comeback for summer – a defi nite must have for any boy’s wardrobe. Jackets and polo shirts are in style for older boys with baseball style jackets being a hit, along with funky printed T-shirts.

Treat your little girl with some stylish, age-appropriate accessories such as a fl ower or bow in her hair to add a touch of glam.

To be sun smart this summer add a cute hat in a vintage pattern or solid colour and team with stylish purple or pink sunglasses for girls and a bucket hat or cap with blue or black sunglasses for boys.

Not only will your little treasures be sun smart, but fashion savvy as well!

With the new season almost here men’s spring trends are in full bloom. The big theme this spring is change. So it’s time to be bold and switch it up with colours and themes that are sure to enhance your look and personality.

A must have this spring is a bold coloured windbreaker (even if there is no wind) to add an edgy look, perfect for those hot days and windy nights. Also be sure to have some stripes in your wardrobe as they are making a comeback this season and the brighter the better. It’s great to get experimenting and what better way to do so than with stripes.

Baggy is in… that is all. Forget those skinny jeans and opt for a baggy, light weight pair of pants however don’t go overboard and lose your shape completely. A baggy pair of pants is perfect for those mild days where you can’t decide between shorts or long pants. The larger cut can be helpful and let your skin breathe on the hotter days.

The colours for men this spring are more plain and basic. This creates a classic yet stylish look. Colour trends range from neutral creams, whites, greys, blues and tan to fl uorescents. These simple colours are great to mix and match as you can wear a fl uorescent colour as a statement piece with an outfi t that is more neutral.

Zambesi is suiting up for summer in black, nude and washed canvas. Baggy Oxford trousers are teamed with two or three buttoned jackets with patch pocket detailing for that extra edge. For a more casual approach indulge in athletic stretch cotton pants or baseball-jodhpur pants. Short-sleeved shirts in strong colour combinations are reversible and a must-have this season. Also a patch-shouldered army jersey in a cotton fi sherman’s knit adds a fresh sense of luxury.

Now is the time to mix it up and step out in stylish, playful trends.
