The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF), New York City’s foremost French cultural center, will once again welcome top créateurs de mode for its annual Fashion Talks series. Pamela Golbin, chief curator of the Musée de la Mode et du Textile at the Louvre Palace, will host the discussions, which will feature Tory Burch on March 16, Lorenz Bäumer (the Place Vendôme jeweler sensation) on March 30, and the legendary Oscar de la Renta on April 4.
The talks serve as a rare opportunity to engage in intimate dialogue with reputable fashion industry leaders and gain insight on their experiences and wisdom.
Tory Burch, designer and CEO of Tory Burch LLC, grew up in a prominent Pennsylvania family and went on to
graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in art history. Shortly after graduating, she relocated to New York to take on fashion, landing gigs at Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, and Narciso Rodriguez. In 2004, she launched Tory Burch bags, shoes, jewelry, and accessories; quickly expanding to ready-to-wear. In just seven years,
Haute Living
Tory Burch has swelled to 45 boutiques worldwide, with a 500 boutique-strong stock-list. She is the recipient of the 2008 CFDA for Accessory Designer of the Year and this past year, was named one of Forbes’ Most Powerful Women in the World. Not one to shy away from philanthropy, Burch established the Tory Burch Foundation in 2009, to support women entrepreneurs in the US through microfinance and mentoring.
Lorenz Bäumer originally hails from Washington D.C., where his father served as a diplomat. After graduating from
France’s Centrale engineering school, he founded his costume jewelry business, Lorenz, in 1989. By 1995, he had landed his first boutique in the exclusive Place Vendôme, enabling him to further introduce his fanciful designs to Paris’ crème de la crème. Often influenced by his family’s world travels, architecture, the natural world, and poetry,
Bäumer creates masterpieces that exemplify utmost technique and refreshing ingenuity. He now serves as art director for Louis Vuitton’s haute joaillerie.

The concluding talk of the series, brings renowned couturier, Oscar de la Renta, uptown to the Florence Guild Hall.
At the age of 18, de la Renta left The Dominican Republic to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He quickly developed a passion for design and began sketching for leading Spanish fashion houses. He then

apprenticed with master, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and eventually assisted Antonio Castillo at Lanvin in Paris. In 1963, de la Renta headed to New York to design the couture collection for Elizabeth Arden. Two years later he opened his signature ready-to-wear label. Today Oscar de la Renta has blossomed into one of the most respected design houses in the US; producing a bridal collection, a line of fragrances, a home collection, and a complete range of accessories.
Oscar de la Renta (c) Peter Bregg
Oscar de la Renta’s critical success and influence on American fashion has garnered him the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2000 and 2007, the French Legion d’Honneur as a Commandeur, in addition to Parsons’ and CFDA Lifetime Achievement Awards. From 1973 to 1976, and from 1986 to 1988, he also served as president of the CFDA. When he designed the haute couture collections for la maison Pierre Balmain, from 1993 to 2002, he became the first American to helm a French couture house.
Oscar de la Renta presently serves as a board member of The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, New Yorkers for Children, and is presently chairman of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute.
FIAF’s Fashion Talks, lead by Golbin, will take place at Florence Gould Hall; 55 East 59th Street , NYC at 7pm.

Tory, Tory, Tory!
I love going to fun stuff in the city but lately it has felt like I'm in a bit of a rut. Part of my "makeover" described earlier today involves getting out more, and amping up my intake of culture. So, when a good friend told me about the FIAF's Fashion Talks series, I jumped at the chance. Tonight was the first talk, and Tory Burch did not disappoint. I've kinda got a bit of a girl crush.
She was eloquent, articulate, and all out inspiring. She talked a great deal about the importance of family and giving back. A few nuggets / key takeaways from the evening... On her #1 fashion necessity? A great trench - so that you can cover everything up. (Sigh... what does she have to cover up!?)
On business? It's not all red carpet... it's about commerce. On social media... at first they did it all wrong - they were too promotional. Now they keep things interesting (Tory does their tweeting,) and they've been able to build a following and interact with the twitter community. I also found it incredible to learn that their design team is only 15 people, that Tory had no formal fashion training or education, and that she did very little research when she started her own business. She admitted that they made a lot of mistakes, but learned from it as they went. All in all, it was an inspiring evening. Of course I totally want to go and buy this now, to support her and all, but I'm being good.

New York City
Living in New York has it’s highs and lows. It is definitely a high stress environment that can get
the best of you if you let it. But, it’s also an amazing city with lots of fun events and activities. In
fact, one of my goals for this year has been to take advantage of as many activities as possible,
including weeknight events. This time last year I rarely left the office before 8pm and went
straight home, exhausted from the day.
This year, I’m working more efficiently while at work and I’m practicing a healthy work life
balance. I left work at 6:15 in order to meet Theodora, Grace, and Meg, Bo’s little sister, for a
special event at Florence Gould Hall.
More than 300 women and men came together to hear Tory Burch talk about her time in the
industry as part of the French Institute’s Fashion Talks.
I honestly have a girl crush after tonight’s event. Tory was poised, family focused, inspiring, and
is very self aware.
(Thanks Theodora for this crystal clear picture!)
While the event only lasted 45 minutes, her insights and comments have left me thinking far
longer. Here are a few of the highlights from tonight:
Tory had no fashion background in college
She has built her brand from the ground up in 7 short years
Her mother, Reva, was the original inspiration behind her lifestyle brand
Her goal was to answer an unmet need for quality fashion at an affordable price
“If you find something you’re passionate about, that’s a great thing.”
“I get to be a business person but also be creative”
Her original 5 year plan was to have 5 strong stores. She had 45 by the end of the 5 years
and will have 60 by the end of this year.
Her flagship store opened during Fashion Week in 2004 and sold $100,000 during the
first day alone.
She attributes her success to her time management skills
They look at the web as their largest store and know this is where they make their first
impression to the consumers.
This September, Tory Burch will have it’s first fashion show. Up until September 2011,
they’ve always had presentations due to cost constraints.
She was a tomboy growing up in Philadelphia suburbs, but her first fashion memory is
her YSL prom dress and her parents’ impeccable style.
She chose her logo from a list of 250 options a design firm provided her after she
requested they build a logo around her initial, T.
She is very focused on her family of three sons, three daughter in laws, and her husband.
(See video here where she addresses phones during dinner.) Tory Burch at Fashion Talks
She understands the importance of social media; and has even used Twitter to pitch
product ideas to loyal consumers. Their first great success from Twitter was the Tory
Travel Socks.
Her #1 fashion necessity which every woman should own is a classic trench to “cover it
all up.” I’m not sure why she’d want to cover her gorgeous clothes but it doesn’t stop me
from lusting over her Quincy trench!
Question: What would you ask Tory Burch if you had the opportunity?

Oh Tory!
I attended the Fashion Talks Series at FIAF ( French Institute Alliance Francaise) and I think I
love her and her brand more today than I ever did before. Moderated by Pamela Golbin, Tory
Burch talked about her inspirations, how she started her career in Fashion, family work- life
balance and answered questions from the audience.
Felt so inspired after the event. I feel even more inspired to get that citrus yellow Robinson
satchel I saw the other day! what?… inspiration comes in many forms! This just seems to strike
me first. :)

Tory Burch possibly launching menswear line Designer Tory Burch hinted of a menswear line.

Famous female clothing designer Tory Burch, known for her signature “T” emblem, fabulous flats and bright fun patterns, is toying with the idea of starting a men’s line.
Currently Burch only offers women’s clothing and accessories, but she said in a talk at the French Institute
Alliance Francaise that she wants to expand into menswear. According to WWD, the line would be inspired by her father’s wardrobe during her youth.
During the talk Burch also expressed interest in creating a full scale fashion show during Fashion Week in NYC. She currently only has presentations of her new clothing lines, not fashion shows.
Burch also joined the ladies of “The View” on Friday for their segment “Friday Fashion” and while she didn’t confirm her menswear line on the show, she did show off some of the latest looks from her collections.
The designer launched her clothing line in February 2004. The label grew from Burch working from her home with a handful of employees to a global company with 45 stores and over 800 employees.

Dudes: Would You Wear A Tory Burch Men’s Collection? by Justin Fenner | 5:51 pm, March 18th, 2011
Last night, designer Tory Burch casually
mentioned that she was flirting with the idea
of starting a men’s during a talk at the
French Institute. When she mentioned the
idea again this morning on The View, she
had some people thinking that it was a
planned part of her business.
Burch talked about her life and work in front
of an audience at FIAF in New York City
Wednesday night, during which moderator
Pamela Golbin (fashion curator at the
Louvre) asked her about her life and
business. Burch said she was toying with
the idea, not that she would actually do it,
but she did say it would be inspired by her
father’s style.
Burch’s father, Buddy Robinson, was a
wealthy Philadelphia investor. We can’t find
too many pictures of him, but in the ones
we have seen, he looks like he has his
stuff together. Burch didn’t confirm (or deny) that she would be doing the line on the show, which of
course is wise if she’s still not sure.
We don’t doubt that Burch could make good clothes in her dad’s clothes’ image — what we doubt is
whether or not any guys would wear them. Her brand as it is is very girly, because she’s designing for a
very feminine woman who loves pattern and color. Her clothes are going to have to look enough like her
in order for her to maintain a sense of brand continuity, but masculine enough so that guys will actually
shell out for the clothes.
We were also momentarily concerned about a men’s clothing line named Tory Burch, but then we
remembered that there are guys who wear the mess out of DKNY (Donna Karan), Vivienne Westwood,
Lilly Pulitzer and Unis (Eunice Lee), so we guess that wouldn’t really be too much of a problem.
Or would it? You tell us.

French Institute Alliance Francaise: 59th St and Park Ave Fashion talks at the French Institute Alliance Francaise was a wonderful surprise. I attended the first evening in the series during which Tory Burch spoke about her secrets for success: the people who work on her team and her passion for fashion.
Tory Burch has only been in business for 7 years and has no fashion education (other than her admiration for her parents' style when they got dressed up for evenings out; she graduated Penn with a degree in art history). However, her American sportswear style (with the iconic logo that she had designed by an outside firm) has been what seems like an unstoppable force. Currently she has 45 retail stores, which is expected to be 60 by the end of the year (is there a recession?) and she went from having one employee working alongside her at her kitchen table to over 800. She explained that this business road was very bumpy (her first collection at Bergdorf's sold only 2 pieces), strained (early years were very cash constrained), and not glamorous (visiting sewing factories in China and pleading with them for a partnership). However, she put her all into her business and surrounded herself with people who believed and worked hard with her. It was clear that the evolution of the business was continuing and it was inspirational to hear about how this young woman did so much with so little, all while keeping straight her priorities about her children (3 sons and 3 step daughters)--no blackberry or phones on when she gets home to have dinner with her family. This is the first event I have attended at the French Institute Alliance Francaise, but if this talk is any indication of the caliber of events, this will certainly not be my last. I would highly recommend checking out their website: www.fiaf.org. Jewelry designer Lorenz Baumer is scheduled for March 30th and Oscar de la Renta is scheduled for April 4th.

FASHION NEWS: Tory Burch, Holmes & Yang and Lindsay Lohan
Here are some of the fashion news headlines of the week:
Designer Tory Burch is considering moving into menswear. During a talk at
the French Institute Alliance Française, Tory revealed that she is currently
pondering the idea of moving her fashion sense into the menswear market.
She said the collection would be based on her father’s wardrobe. [WWD]
Katie Holmes gave her clothing line with stylist Jeanne Yang a push on
with the first Holmes & Yang trunk show. Katie and Jeanne appeared at
Barneys for the show to promote their spring line and give it some added
publicity. Barneys extended the clothing line’s contract last summer by an
extra 8 months because it was selling so well. [WWD]
In an article published in the New York Times writer Gloria Allred expressed
his opinion on Lindsay Lohan’s court room fashion saying “If anything, her
outfits are alienating. A court wants to feel that the defendant has a proper
respect for the gravity of the occasion. I suppose we ought to be grateful that she’s not wearing shorts.” Lindsay has
previous said that she doesn’t think what she wears to court should be front page news. [ABA Journal]

Tory Burch Talks Oprah, Twitter and Her YSL Prom
Dress March 21, 2011 12:30 PM by Veronique Hyland
The French Institute/Alliance
Francaise in New York has been
holding a Fashion Talks series (Oscar
de la Renta is an upcoming guest.) On
Thursday, we went to see Tory Burch
in conversation with the Chief Curator
of the Musée de la Mode et du Textile
at the Louvre Palace. Below, some
choice quotes from the hour-long
exchange.
On the early days of her business:
"I was putting my boys to bed at
8:30, and falling asleep at 4 in the
morning on the phone to Asia."
On her five-year plan: "It was
always a retail concept…My five-year plan was three stores. Today we have 45." (She will have about 60 by
the end of this year.)
On getting a call from Oprah's team in 2005: "I have three brothers, and I definitely thought they were
playing a trick on me. I said, 'Sure, no problem, I'll cancel my spring break', because I thought it was still a
joke. Turns out it wasn't." They did a fashion show on the program, and "the next day we had 8 million hits
on our website."
On social media: "I always have been interested in the web and social media. I'm not that technologically
savvy, but for me it has always been another venue to sell." She Tweets and maintains a blog, "looking at it
as a magazine online."
On being called a "Park Avenue designer": "I grew up on a farm in Valley Forge, PA, not caring
anything about fashion. I was a total tomboy. I had three brothers, we were outside all day. Park Avenue
wasn't really on my horizon." Her one non-tomboy moment? "I had a Saint Laurent prom dress that [my
mother] bought me. And it was the first time I probably put on a dress, actually! I really was anti-dress. I
had this big black tulle and plum dress."
On her father Buddy Robinson's amazing fashion sense: "My brother and I are keeping his clothes
because he had such great style. I told my older brother [to keep them], in case we ever want to do men's."
On seeing women on the street in her clothes: I will never be jaded when I see [someone wearing my
designs.]"
