What is a sweatshop?
This all leads to one question.
do we still buy things made with sweatshop labor?
Let’s go back to the shopping activity.
75% OFF
It’s all about the economics.
If the price is right,
You tend to morally disengage*
* to be explained.
Let’s say this happens.(it does)
You are more likely to buy things without considering how it’s made.
Walmart posted record earnings despite economic downturn
But you also tend to morally disengage when you think…
Man, these jeans are
really cute!
Is it like comparing apples and oranges?
Dr. Rohit Reshpande found that moral disengagement is high when sweatshop labor and desirability are both high.
"It's troubling that so much of our social and economic system is based on our moral judgment, especially if it's easy for us to justify our actions based on what we want." – Neeru Paharia

It’s bad and all, but we still need them, right?
Companies need to cut costs to thrive.
just add $1.80.
To double the pay of a worker for a $100 sports jacket,
People are willing to pay $15 more for sweatshop-free clothes.
Here are few companies that thrive without sweatshop labor.
Toms
American Apparel
Sweatshops fill a necessary labor gap.
Sweatshops actually place people in a cycle of poverty.
¡Vamos a Honduras!
An average worker earns 43 ¢/hour
After daily meals…
transportation…
An average worker is left with 80¢/day
for childcare…
rent…
school…
emergencies…
BUT IT’S NOT IN AMERICA.
Here are few people who disagree.
(Because they worked in one)
John Liu, New York City comptroller
Lucy Liu, actress
Garment workers of Forever 21
How do we let this happen in our own backyards?
The power is literally in your hands.
What are yougoing to do
about it?
