Fasig-Tipton has unveiled the catalogue for its upcoming
November Sale, which will be held Monday, Nov. 7 in Lexington.
A total of 160 head have been catalogued for the one-session
auction, which will get underway at 5 p.m.
AOur goal each year for the November Sale is to assemble a
catalogue of outstanding quality that will appeal to buyers from
around the globe,@ said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning.
AThis year=s catalogue hits that >mark= from start to finish.@
Browning continued, AThe evening will begin with 50 selected
weanlings, and then transition into a superb collection of racing
stars and elite broodmares. In total, this year=s catalogue
features 57 graded stakes winners or producers, 24 of which are
Grade 1. A remarkable 83% of the racing/broodmare prospects
and broodmares on offer are black-type earners or producers.@
The November catalogue features 2015 GI Breeders' Cup
Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat) (hip 87), as
well as 2015 GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint winner Wavell Avenue
(Harlington) (hip 98) and this year's GI Kentucky Oaks winner
Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss) (hip 113). Also in the catalogue is
recent GI Del Mar Debutante winner Union Strike (Union Rags)

Empyrean Stables= Diadura (Hard Spun) leads an evenly
matched field of 14 in the GI Darley Alcibiades, the traditional
opening-day feature at Keeneland, and will try to punch her
ticket to the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies in her first try both
over dirt and around two turns.
Overcoming traffic trouble to capture her debut as the favorite
Aug. 5 at Arlington, the $50,000 OBS August yearling buy was
ultra-impressive in annexing the Arlington-Washington Lassie S.

After showing promise intermittently through his first threeseasons and capturing a pair of stakes last term, A.P. Indian hasturned the corner as a 6-year-old into the country=s mostprominent sprinter. He carries into the Phoenix a four-racewinning streak that includes victories in the GI Alfred G.Vanderbilt H. and GI Priority One Jets Forego S. at Saratoga. AHe is sounder this year,@ trainer Arnaud Delacour told theKeeneland notes team. AHe had a few setbacks last year and wecould not train him properly. He was not 100% here last year. Hehad beaten horses that Runhappy had beaten and with theweather, it was not a true indication of his ability.@ The stiffest test for the odds-on morning line favorite couldcome from Ami=s Flatter (Flatter), who put in the best effort ofhis life in comfortably winning Keeneland=s GIII CommonwealthS. Apr. 9. His main challenge, aside from the favorite, may be thedistance, as he has yet to run shorter than seven furlongs in 12career starts. In Florida, it doesn=t take much to be a Aracetrack.@ Places that
go by the names of Gretna Racing, Oxford Downs and Hamilton
Downs have been able to offer forms of gaming at their facilities
by holding races that, by no logical standards, resemble anything
close to what is reasonably considered actual horse racing. The
races are called Aflag-drop races@ and are oftentimes nothing
more than two Quarter Horses starting at the drop of a flag and
running at slow speeds until reaching the finish line some 100
yards from the start. They are parimutuel races, but during the
meet run at Hamilton Downs during the 2015-2016 fiscal year,
the handle was zero. Not one bet on one race was placed. And
one race at Hamilton included a 20-year-old horse.
Members and officials with legitimate Quarter Horsemen=s
associations, and even their counterparts in Standardbred and
Thoroughbred racing have been irate that the Florida Division of
Pari-Mutuel Wagering has allowed these meets to exists, but
what has been a strange and troubling situation may be about to
get much worse. Management at iconic Hialeah has been
making moves that indicate they, too, may be dropping
legitimate Quarter Horse Races and replacing them with the
type of racing that is conducted at Oxford, Gretna and Hamilton.
AWhat they are trying to do is to have racing that is not
recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association,@ said
Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association President Ron Smith.
AThis is fake horse racing. Everybody in the Thoroughbred
business should be scared to death over this because if they can
get us, they can get them, too.@ Cont. p6

Hialeah has severed ties with the AQHA, which sanctions races
around the country and sets standards for Quarter Horse tracks,
and its only Florida affiliate, the FQHRA, and signed an
agreement with a group called the
South Florida Quarter Horse
Association, about which little is
known.
Conducting Aflag-drop racing@ allows
Florida tracks to have casinos and other
forms of gaming is because the
language in the racing statutes is so
poorly defined that it requires a track
simply to have Ahorse racing.@ Thus far,
the courts have determined that flag
drop racing is horse racing. There are,
after all, horses and they race against
one another...more or less. Usually,
these races consist of two horses.
Hialeah has slots, a poker room and electronic table games. It
cannot have them without holding horse racing of some kind
and it can not conduct a racing meet without an agreement with
a horsemen=s group.
Hialeah owner John Brunetti Sr. did not rule out that flag-drop
racing would be held at Hialeah in 2017.
AI=ve always wanted this to be a Thoroughbred track but the
other tracks ganged up on me and basically shut me down,@ he
said. AThen we tried Quarter Horse racing. I did not have a good
relationship with their horsemen=s group.
I was used to working with Thoroughbred
horsemen. We didn=t always agree but at
least we all wanted to do our best for
Thoroughbred racing. It wasn=t the same
way with the Quarter Horse people. I=ve
lost $10 million running the Quarter
Horse racing and I had to find a way to
put a stop to that. There are still a lot of
things going on, including with the
legislature, so I=m not certain yet what we
are going to do next year. But anything is
possible. I call those other tracks (Gretna,
Hamilton, Oxford) the >Mickey Mouse=
circuit. If I=m forced to join them I will. What else do people
want me to do?@
Though Hialeah has not conducted a Thoroughbred race since
2001, it remains one of the most famous and historic tracks in
thoroughbred history. Listed on the National Register of
Historical Places, Hialeah opened in 1925 and was the winter

For most of its history, Hialeah was awarded the prime winter
dates by the Florida racing commissions, but when regulations
were changed to allow any Florida track to run any time it
wanted, Hialeah became the odd track out, unable to compete
with Calder and Gulfstream.
But Hialeah had a second life. In 2009, it re-opened, a
requirement to have alternate forms of gaming. Each year since,
it ran a 40-day Quarter Horse meet. And while Thoroughbred
purists may not have been pleased to see another breed take
over at a track of such significance, at least Hialeah was open,
operating and conducting racing sanctioned by a legitimate
organization, the AQHA and its affiliate, the FQHRA.
That, apparently, is about to change.
Tony Glover, the director of the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel
Wagering, did not return phone calls from the TDN. Florida
Department of Business and Professional Regulation Deputy
Director of Communications Kathleen Keenan did respond to an
email from the TDN that included several questions about
Hialeah=s future, but the only information she provided was the
dates Hialeah had applied for in 2017 and a list of new
regulations covering pari-mutuel wagering. Many questions
remain unanswered.
The only two certainties are: Hialeah plans to race 18 days in
June, conducting a total of 36 cards by labeling each racing day
as a doubleheader; and Hialeah management has managed to
disassociate itself with the FQHRA and has come to an
agreement with a group calling itself the South Florida Quarter
Horse Association. In Florida, as in all states, a track cannot have
gaming unless it has a signed agreement with a horsemen=s
association.
According to current records available from the Florida
Department of State Division of Corporations, the only officer or
member listed under the SFQHA is a Tallahassee-based attorney
Samual Ard, who is, according to the website floridalobbyist.gov,
a lobbyist for Hialeah. Ard did not return phone calls seeking
information about his connections with Hialeah and the
operations of the SFQHA, which, beyond Ard, has no known
members.
Previous documents involving the SFQHA include the names of
Wesley Cox and Cindy Gramling, both representatives of the
horsemen=s group representing Gretna Racing. It appears that
neither is any longer affiliated with the SFQHA.
So, how and why did the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel
Wagering allow Hialeah to push out a legitimate horsemen=s
group that had been there since Quarter Horse racing began at
Hialeah and replace it with a group headed by a Hialeah lobbyist
that has no known members?
AThose are the big questions we are asking ourselves,@ Smith
said. AI think Hialeah sent it over to them and they just rubber-
stamped it. They didn=t do their homework, even though we
warned them what was going to happen.@
That doesn=t mean that the courts don=t see through the farce.
In a ruling where Administrative Law Judge E. Gary Early ruled
that Hamilton Downs could keep its license, he didn=t hide his
disdain for the type of racing conducted there.
He wrote: AThe races must be seen to be believed. The 14
events for which video evidence was received showed a series
of races involving--as a rule--tired, reluctant, skittish, or
disinterested horses moving at a slow pace down the dust-
choked path. There was no marked starting line or finish line.
The horses were often yards apart when the red rag-on-a-stick
was waved. With one exception...the gait of the >racing= horses
ranged between a slow walk and a canter. Horses often simply
stood at the starting line before slowly plodding down the
track.@
Early also noted that in one race it took a horse 1 minute and
45 seconds to finish the 110-yard race and said this of the races:
Athey were about what one would expect of an entry-level
campers= horse show held at the conclusion of a two-week

Even Smith, who has never been involved in Thoroughbredracing, understands how distasteful a scenario that would be. AI think that it is an absolute shame that an historic racetracklike Hialeah would do this,@ he said. AThat track has been there along time and there are still a lot of possibilities for a revival. It=sjust sad that horse racing is not promoted as a positive.Evidently, they think it is a hindrance.@ But what is stopping Hialeah from running whatever kind ofracing it wants? If the horsemen=s group is run by a lobbyist forthe racetrack, why wouldn=t the horsemen=s group do whateverHialeah management tells it to do? As things stand now, purseswill come from the profits from Hialeah=s card room and willequal about $280,000 for the meet. Regulations require Hialeahto hold 288 races, meaning the average purse will be $972 arace. AThe problem with this is that it is, in fact, decoupling,@ Smithsaid. ABecause if in fact Hialeah and the horsemen=s group areone and the same, they have decoupled. That=s because theyare making their own rules and all their own decisions and thereis no arm=s length between the two. There will be nohorsemen=s group working in the best interests of racing.@
The Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association hasn=t given upits fight. It has filed suit against the Division of Pari-MutuelRacing over its decision to recognize the SFQHA and not itsgroup. The hearing will be held during the last week in October. AWe had a number of questions regarding whether thedepartment had followed statutes and what have you whenthey recognized (the SFQHA),@ Smith said. AThey had 30 days toreply. We heard nothing from them; the department did notanswer our questions. Now we will go before a judge andexplain our position. We believe we can be successful in makingwhat happened before go away and that we will once again bethe horsemen=s group.@ If that happens, Brunetti may be forcedto run a Anormal@ Quarter Horse meet. AThe entire intent of the legislation that coupled horse racingwith casinos was this: you create a need for a breeding industryand all the jobs it creates,@ Smith said. AIf you have eight to 10horses in each race and you have a true meet, you need about1,000 horses. That requires lot of broodmares and stallions tomake that happen. If you=re looking at what Hialeah is trying todo it=s a sham when it comes to the idea of being an economicengine.@ While Hialeah hasn=t had Thoroughbred horse racing in 15years and Gretna, Oxford and Hamilton never have, theprospect of another racetrack with a casino being able toessentially hold gaming without actual horse racing is raisingconcerns within the Florida Thoroughbred industry.

AObviously, if you can drop a flag and have a couple kids on
barrel horses run down the track and that qualifies you to run a
casino, you really have no need for horse racing,@ said Barry
Berkelhammer, a member of the Board of the Florida
Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association. AHorse racing
is expensive to run and that=s the main reason Churchill really
doesn=t want to conduct racing at Calder. They just want to run a
casino. The essence of the statutes and the way it was intended
and presented was to keep an agricultural industry alive, which
has positive economic impacts. The state allowed (casinos at
racetracks) and passed it on that premise and now these
wiseguy lawyers can find these little loopholes to declare the
definition of a horse race is not actually defined in the statutes,
and therefore who=s to argue a horse race isn=t a flag drop
between two horses?
A(Gulfstream owner) Frank Stronach is committed to horse
racing and loves horse racing, but at the same time, he is a
businessman and his heirs are businesspeople. If at some point it
becomes too difficult to offer horse racing and it=s more
profitable to exist without it, then who=s to say what they will
do? This could be a downward spiral that opens the door for the
destruction of horse racing.@

year's GI Woodbine Mile
and was second in his
next start in the
GI Breeders' Cup Mile. However, a return engagement in this
year's mile would mean facing superstar Tepin, a horse that has
already beaten Mondialiste twice. She beat the 6-year-old by
2 1/4 lengths in last year's Mile and by 11 3/4 lengths this year
in the GI Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Might, then the
GI Breeders' Cup Turf at a mile-and-a-half be a better option?
"We're looking at things one race at a time," O'Meara said.
"The Mile is the main plan and, hopefully, he will come out of
this race well enough that we can come back in the Mile. But we
haven't completely ruled out the Turf. His pedigree suggests he
should stay. He's out of a Kaldoun (Fr) mare and is by Galileo, so
the Turf has not been completely ruled out. We'll get Saturday
out of the way first and make a decision after that."
O'Meara hasn't been afraid to stretch Mondialiste out this
year. He finished second in the GII Sky Bet York S. in July at a
mile-and-five-sixteenths.
"His run this year at York behind Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}),
where he we got beat a half-length was probably as good as
anything he's done in the States," O'Meara said.
In his next start he shipped back to the U.S. and won the
GI Arlington Million at a mile-and-quarter.
As for Tepin, O'Meara has plenty of respect for her.
"She's obviously a very good filly and won the Queen Anne
impressively in June," he said. "Other foreign horses have come
over for that race with big reputations and not managed to run
well. Not having her in this race (the Shadwell) is a help for us."

For the past year, I have had the honor of representing
Graham Motion before the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission
("KHRC") with regard to the alleged finding of 2.9 nanograms of
Methocarbamol--a lawful, therapeutic medication--in Kitten=s
Point=s serum after her race in the Bewitch Stakes on April 24,
2015. Two days ago,
following a hearing in
which Graham was
denied the right to
present substantial
evidence in his
defense, the KHRC
ruled that Motion
was in violation of
Kentucky's threshold
for Methocarbamol
and ordered that he
pay a $500 fine.
While I have been deeply troubled by numerous issues
associated with the KHRC's prosecution of this case, I feel
compelled to respond to the op-ed piece written by Dr. Dionne
Benson, Executive Director of the Racing Medication and Testing
Consortium ("RMTC") on October 5, 2016.

Specifically, Dr. Benson boldly proclaims that "all existing
published scientific research supports the current RMTC
recommended threshold for methocarbamol." This is simply not
true.
The biggest problem with the case brought against Motion
(and there are many) is that the RMTC recommended threshold
for Methocarbamol--which Kentucky adopted--directly
contradicts the science on the subject. The current RMTC and
KHRC threshold for Methocarbamol is 1.0 nanograms. This
means that, while the use of Methocarbamol is allowable in
Kentucky, it cannot be present in a horse's system above the
level of 1.0 nanograms during a race. Setting aside the fact that I
question why any racing commission would choose to regulate a
benign substance like Methocarbamol at the nanogram level--
which is a billionth of a gram and it being undisputed that there
would be zero pharmacological effect on a horse at such a small
concentration--the greater problem is this: the 1.0 nanogram
threshold has no scientific basis.
A history lesson on the RMTC is important at this point. The
RMTC is an entity that was formed a little over a decade ago for
the self-declared purpose of making recommendations to states
concerning medication rules in horse racing. To that end, the
RMTC formed a Scientific Advisory Committee ("SAC"), which
consisted of a number of researchers, veterinarians and
scientists, to conduct studies on medications and recommend
regulatory thresholds. The goal was to establish uniform
medication rules based on science that had been subjected to
"peer review and publication."
In 2009, there was little, if any, research on Methocarbamol.
The SAC was engaged to conduct a study to examine the effects
of Methocarbamol on horses. Following the completion of their
study, the entire SAC unequivocally recommended that the
regulatory threshold for Methocarbamol be set at 20
nanograms. Shockingly, with no explanation or basis, the RMTC
rejected the proposal of its own retained scientists, and instead
arbitrarily adopted a 1.0 nanogram threshold. How do we know
this? We subpoenaed the internal records of the RMTC since it
directs its scientists to maintain confidentiality. Now we know why.
So, in sum, the RMTC adopted a threshold for Methocarbamol
that directly contradicts what its own Scientific Advisory
Committee recommended. Had the RMTC simply followed the
advice of its own scientists, we would not be where we are
today.
Let me be clear: I am not fundamentally opposed to the RMTC
and the national coordination of medication regulations. In fact,
I think it is a noble idea. But if your stated goal is to study
medications and recommend fair rules, you need to do it
properly. Ignoring the work of your own scientists utterly fails in
that regard.
The RMTC has great power based upon the fact that several
states, like Kentucky, follow many of its recommendations.
With great power comes great responsibility. For anyone
associated with the RMTC to publicly proclaim that its
Methocarbamol threshold is scientifically based is flat out
wrong.
Graham Motion is as fine a horseman as you will ever meet.
More importantly, he is an even better person. The original
sanction handed down by the KHRC in this case was a $500 fine
and a five-day suspension. The easiest thing for Graham to have
done would have been to accept the modest punishment and
move on. The emotional and financial toll of litigation, even
when you are right, is great. However, Graham stood up, not
only for himself, but for horsemen everywhere, and I commend
him for it. The RMTC should similarly do the right thing by
moving beyond its self-serving statements and get to work on
fixing its thresholds so that they comport with science. It can

offerings at the upcoming Keeneland November Breeding Stock
Sale.
HUNTER VALLEY: QUALITY IS THE GOALby Amanda Duckworth
Time is relative, but in the Thoroughbred business, 11 years is
not very long. However, that has not kept Hunter Valley Farm
from succeeding at the highest levels, and this year appears to
be no different heading into the Keeneland November Breeding
Stock Sale.

operation to the
auction world in 2005.
Quality has been their
goal from the word go,
and one of the horses
they sold for $250,000
from their first consignment at the Keeneland September
Yearling Sale was none other than multiple graded stakes
winner and revered late stallion Scat Daddy.
"It's such a shame that he'd just hit the pinnacle of his stallion
career and unfortunately died last year," said Galvin. "We
bought him as a
weanling privately
out of a field with his
mother. He was
pretty raw when he
was young-tall and
gangly. The further
along he got in his
yearling year,
though, the more he
just started to take
shape. By the time
we got to Keeneland, he was really good. We always bred
several mares to him, both when he was unpopular and when
he was popular. Now, even in his death, he is still repaying us."
Each sale, Hunter Valley has standout offerings, and this
November one of those is the Galileo (Ire) mare Secret Gesture.
A Group 2 winner in England, Secret Gesture also finished
second in the G1 Investec Oaks and was controversially
disqualified from first in the 2015 GI Beverly D. Stakes.
"She could have sold anywhere in the world, but we put our
heads together and felt that Keeneland was the place to be,"
said Galvin. "Her biggest success was at Arlington, and even
though she was disqualified, it is still pretty fresh in people's
minds. She is such a unique offering, and she would be a unique
offering anywhere she goes."
In addition to her race record, Secret Gesture is out of the
Danehill mare Shastye (Ire), which makes Group 3 winner Sir
Isaac Newton (Ire) her full-rother, and she is in foal to War
Front. Shastye is a sibling to GI Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner
Sagamix and fellow French Group 1 winner Sagacity.

at the Keeneland January sale, and the following year they sold
her at Keeneland November for a tidy $1.25 million.
Success just kept coming for Hunter Valley, and two years ago
marked an important milestone for the operation as it ended
2014 as one of the top 10 leading consignors overall by gross in
North America for the first time.

For all of its success with broodmares, many of Hunter Valley's
biggest results have come with weanlings. Overall, for nine of
the 11 sales seasons that the farm has been in business, it has
ranked in North America's top 10 of leading consignors of
weanlings by gross, and for four of those years, it was in the top
five.
"We have developed a niche in the weanling market," Galvin.
"Some people prefer to hold on to them, but it has always been
our M.O. from the get-go that if they looked right
conformation-wise and physically, we put our best weanlings
into the sale."
One of their biggest accomplishments was a weanling who
sold for $50,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November Sale. As part
of War Front's first crop of foals, The Factor became a multiple
Grade I winner, helped launch War Front's historic stallion
career, and is now a promising young stallion himself.
"He and Scat Daddy are certainly our two flagship horses, but
there have been several we have been pretty proud of that have
accomplished so much," said Galvin. "It's been quite
remarkable, and we are blessed to have such great clients and
such great groups of horses."
The year after Hunter Valley offered The Factor, they were
back with a son of Arch who was hammered down for $80,000.
Named Grand Arch, he is still racing, and the millionaire's
biggest victory to date came at Keeneland in the GI 2015
Shadwell Turf Mile.

Presented by Keeneland Select. He was narrowly beaten in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint before beginning his stallion career in Europe.
"The word in Ireland is that he is getting exceptional first-crop foals, and we are lucky enough we actually have one in Kentucky," said Galvin. "It will hopefully be a unique offering here in [the Keeneland] November [Sale] to have a No Nay Never."
Today, Hunter Valley is comprised of about 330 acres, and it is still home to a mare who has turned out to be far more special than the partners anticipated when they bought her.
"One of our best memories now wasn't at the time," said Galvin. "Fortyniner Fever, who is now our flagship mare at the farm, was bought at Keeneland during our first November consignment. We bought her for $55,000, and she quickly became the dam of a graded stakes winner and two other stakes winners. She has certainly paid a few mortgage payments for us."
Hunter Valley ended up buying one of those aforementioned stakes winners, Bold Angel, at the 2012 Keeneland November sale for $65,000, and she, too, repaid them quickly. The foal she was carrying at the time is now known as Street Fancy, winner of the 2015 GI Starlet S.
Galvin and Regan are the day-to-day managers of the farm, which is home to about 40-50 broodmares, while Wade and Hegarty are based in Chicago.
"We get along well, and we have had great success," said Galvin. "One of the very first yearlings we put through the ring was Scat Daddy, and it's just followed on from there. It's obviously gratifying when they sell well, and Keeneland is an international audience."

Leading sire Dubawi (Ire) ended Book 1 of the TattersallsOctober Yearling Sale the way he started it, with a 2.6-millionguineas son topping Thursday=s closing session when bought byAngus Gold for Sheikh Hamdan=s Shadwell Stable. Dubawi, who was the sale=s leading sire with 15 sold for14,590,000gns and an average of 972,667gns, sired four of thetop 10 lots, with Tuesday=s co-topper sold to John Ferguson,advisor to Sheikh Hamdan=s brother Sheikh Mohammed, whostands Dubawi at his Dalham Hall Stud just down the road fromTattersalls= Park Paddocks in Newmarket. At the close of Book 1, a 6% advance in aggregate to88,038,000gns was achieved from just 14 more horses sold--atotal of 386 from the 493 offered for a clearance rate of 78%,down from 81% last year. The average for the three days was upby 3% to 228,078gns, but the median dropped by 13% to130,000gns. The final session, with its four seven-figure lots, saw dramaticincreases when set against the equivalent day in 2015, with theaggregate up by 25% to 30,456,000gns and average by 30% to255,933gns. The median held steady at 140,000gns and theclearance rate, for 119 sold from 146 offered, was down to 73%from 79%.

This time three years ago, Australian owner-breeder Paul
Makin was gearing up to sell his entire bloodstock operation
through the much-publicised Paulyn Dispersal at Goffs, which
included his G1 Irish Oaks winner Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}),
who sold for i6-million.
As he prepares to celebrate his 80th birthday, Makin, who has
also tasted top-level success in both hemispheres with his
five-time Group 1 winner Starcraft (NZ) (Soviet Star), admits that
the lure of the racing industry proved too strong for him not to
return. It wasn=t long before he started making a few strategic
purchases, such as the i1.8-million filly foal by Frankel (GB) out
of the dual Classic winner Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr Greeley), who is
now two and named La Figlia (Ire).

As had become customary this week before a Dubawi (Ire) was
led in, the ring began to swell shortly before lot 427 came under
the hammer, and it didn=t take long for the bidding to shoot into
seven figures, with interested parties including Angus Gold,
trainer Roger Varian and Australia=s Sun Stud. The bidding battle
eventually came down to Gold and Varian, who traded a
number of blows before Varian ended up once again as the
underbidder, as he has been a number of Dubawis this week.
A glance at the catalogue page reveals the obvious appeal of
the well-conformed bay colt. The Apr. 2 foal is the ninth produce
of the G1 Prix de l=Opera winner Zee Zee Top (GB) (Zafonic),
whose progeny
are headed by the

the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Necklace (GB) (Darshaan {GB}).
The third dam is the dual Group 3 winner Reprocolor (GB). Izzi
Top gave the family=s credentials another boost on Wednesday
when her 1.1-million guineas Oasis Dream (GB) son Dreamfield
(GB) won at first asking for Godolphin.
AHe was a lovely horse from a great family,@ said Gold. AThe
2-year-old won very well yesterday out of a daughter of the
mare. It keeps coming, that family, and he was a beautiful
individual, I thought. He=s not an early horse but the family
seems to get better as they get older.@
The colt was the most expensive purchase ever for Shadwell at
Tattersalls, and Gold said, ASheikh Hamdan was keen to get a
good Dubawi and let's hope this horse can run. Congratulations
to Meon Valley, they brought a lovely bunch of horses here and
they=ve been rewarded.@

Reprocolor=s Enduring Legacy... The founding trio of the Weinfeld family=s fine broodmare
band has received many tributes in print over the years, but of
the three yearling fillies bought for Egon and Elizabeth Weinfeld
by Richard Galpin back in 1977, one has outshone her
contemporaries by a wide margin and that is the Jimmy Reppin
(GB) mare Reprocolor (GB). Around 20 of her descendants
remain among the 34 mares at Meon Valley Stud and during the
final session of Book 1 her Group 1-winning grand-daughter Zee
Zee Top provided a little sales-ring magic when her Dubawi colt
equaled Monday=s sales-topping price.
The pedigree of the near-black half-brother to G1 Pretty Polly
S. heroine Izzi Top and G2 Prix de la Nonette winner Jazzi Top
received a further boost, if one were needed, on Wednesday
when Izzi Top=s son Dreamfield streaked to an eight-length
maiden success at Nottingham to earn quotes of 20/1 for next
year=s G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas.
AThat certainly helped,@ smiled Mark Weinfeld, who has
continued his parents= passion for racing and breeding at the
Hampshire farm. AWe thought he might be a million-plus horse
but you never really know how high they will go. We=ve had a
lucky patch for the last few years and have a few nice members
of this family at home.@
Those at home include Zee Zee Top=s filly foal by Invincible
Spirit (Ire) who will be retained. The 17-year-old mare was not
covered this year. Weinfeld added, AAll of this family have been
very good mentally, going right back to Reprocolor. Having such
good heads on them certainly helps them when they are racing,

Weinfeld, who is aided at Meon Valley by his sister Helena
Ellingsen and the father-and-son team of stud groom and
assistant stud groom David and Adam Wymbs, paid tribute to his
staff, saying, AIt=s been a great effort from everyone. We like
consigning the horses ourselves--we enjoy the pressure. The
worst day of the year from me is the day after the sales when all
the horses have gone.@
The second-most expensive Dubawi of the day came late in
the session when John Ferguson went to 825,000gns for lot 535,
a bay filly from Watership Down Stud. The May 3 foal is out of
the outstanding producer Claba Di San Jore (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}),
and is therefore a half-sister to Group 1 winner Jakkalberry (Ire)
(Storming Home {GB}), Crackerjack King (Ire) (Shamardal) and
Awelmarduk (Ire) (Intikhab) and listed winner Joyful Hope (GB)
(Shamardal). His half-sister Bois Joli (Ire) has also produced the
stakes winners Circus Couture (Ire) (Intikhab) and Celticus (Ire)
(Stroll).
Doyle Springs For Alice=s Sister... When a yearling=s full-sister has won three Group 1 races since
mid-July, any vendor would be entitled to be confident taking
that horse to the ring, especially if she happens to be by Galileo
(Ire).
The sister of Alice Springs (Ire) (lot 441) was always likely to be
a bestseller, but her position as the most expensive filly in Book
1 was helped by the return to Tattersalls of one of the boldest
bidders of the modern age, Paul Makin, who swooped straight in
with a promise of 1-millions guineas. As the filly=s price reached
1.5-million guineas, Makin countered with another offer of 2-
million guineas, but it still wasn=t enough to deter Peter Doyle
from the chase, with the agent having the final say at 2.1-million
guineas on behalf of the increasingly active partnership of
Coolmore and Mayfair Speculators.
AThey=ve bought some very nice yearlings this week and in
Arqana as well,@ said Doyle. AThe pedigree is very nice and she=s
a lovely filly who walked really well. The family keeps
producing.@
The question of whether the filly will join her sister in training
at Ballydoyle is not yet settled, with Doyle adding, AThere=s
another option as well in France--Andre Fabre. The lads will
discuss it all later. We=ve had success with both of them [O=Brien
and Fabre] and with Nicolas Clement as well.@
Mayfair Speculators= Derek Brugman noted the operation has
shares in about 50 horses in Europe.
The Danehill Dancer (Ire) mare Aleagueoftheirown (Ire) has
been bred consistently to Galileo during the course of her stud
career, with other siblings including the Group 2-placed Criteria,
who cost 535,000gns at this sale back in 2012, and another
black-type performer, Kingston Jamaica (Ire).
Her yearling filly was offered by Glenvale Stud, whose principal
Ciaran Conroy said, AHer pedigree updates were unbelievable.
Alice Springs is a really good filly who has progressed all year.
This filly is balanced with good limbs and a really good mover.
She=s been really straightforward all the way through. Thanks to
Paul Makin for making such a determined attempt to buy her--
you always need an underbidder.@
Galileo finished behind only Dubawi and his own son Frankel
by average for Book 1, with 16 sold for 9,765,000gns and an
average of 610,313gns.
Frankel A Tatts Attraction... The peerless champion Frankel (GB) has made a flying start to
his stud career this year, and as such it shouldn=t have come as a
surprise that his second-crop yearlings would be highly sought
after at Tattersalls this week. The Juddmonte resident had 10
sell for 7,335,000gns and an average of 733,500gns, and his
three seven-figure lots were headed by Floors Stud=s son of dual
champion filly Attraction (GB) (Efisio {GB}) (lot 475). Like the
session-topping colt, the bay was hammered down to Angus
Gold, this time for 1.6-million guineas.

colt this year and was bred back to
Invincible Spirit (Ire).
The Duke of Roxburghe, owner of
Floors Stud in Scotland, said after
the sale, "It is a feeling of relief. I've
watched the horses selling all week
and waited for today and have been
starting to feel the pressure.@
"Frankel is the most exciting stallion, and Attraction was the
most exciting thing to happen in my racing life--both of them
made all up the Rowley Mile. This could not have been more
fitting.@
The Duke of Roxburghe explained that he had to wait longer
than hoped to breed to Frankel.
"I wanted to use Frankel for her in his first year, but Attraction
was on a late pregnancy so we left her that year,@ he noted.
AShe had a Dubawi colt this year and is in-foal to Invincible Spirit.
This colt was always the coolest horse to work with, a fantastic
temperament and outlook and my staff have done a wonderful
job all year. It is an honour that Sheikh Hamdan and Shadwell
have bought him."
Angus Gold=s Thursday haul also included a 525,000gns son of
Speightstown (lot 438). The first foal of the stakes-winning
Albamara (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was bred in the U.S. by Kirsten
Rausing=s Lanwades Stud and consigned by her Irish-based
Staffordstown Stud, and is a grandson of the German champion
mare Albanova (GB) (Alzao). Albamara produced a full-brother
to this colt this year and was bred back to Oasis Dream (GB).
Floors Stud enjoyed another profitable result late in the
session when selling a Dubawi (Ire) son of Comic (Ire) (Be My
Chief) (lot 540) to Blandford Bloodstock for 750,000gns. The bay
is a half-brother to Hong Kong champion and dual GI Audemars
Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup winner Viva Pataca (GB) (Marju
{Ire}), as well as GI Diana S. and GI Flower Bowl Invitational
winner Laughing (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). The colt was the second-
most expensive of his dam=s progeny to be sold at auction; his
full-brother, the winning Nice Future (GB), was bought by John
Ferguson for 1.4-million guineas two years ago.
Frankel And Zoffany Meet Again... Zoffany (Ire) was one of only two horses to finish within a
length of Frankel (GB) when chasing him down in the G1 St
James=s Palace S. of 2011, and on the final day of Book 1
Zoffany=s half-brother by Juddmonte=s young superstar was an
early highlight when selling for 1.1-million guineas.
John Magnier bought Zoffany from Croom House Stud for
220,000gns, and his son MV came back for his sibling (lot 385),
continuing Coolmore=s list of purchases this season in
partnership with the Mayfair Speculators.
ADenis Brosnan is a very good breeder and we=ve had luck
buying from Croom House Stud before, especially with Zoffany,@
said Magnier. AHe=s made a great start at stud and we=re hoping
that Washington DC will either run at Ascot on Champions Day
or in the Breeders= Cup. Frankel is also doing really well and this
is a very nice colt.@
As well as Zoffany, the Machiavellian mare Tyranny (GB) has
also produced G3 Anglesey S. winner and G2 Gimcrack S.
runner-up Wilshire Boulevard (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})
among her five offspring to have saluted the judge.
Eleven lots later the Coolmore/Mayfair team swung back into
action to claim Airlie Stud=s Galileo (Ire) half-brother to G2 Park

That purchase was augmented later still by lot 431, a Galileo filly
offered by New England Stud on behalf of Christopher Hanbury
of Triermore Stud and bought for 750,000gns.
The first two foals of the G1 Frizette S. winner A Z Warrior
(Bernardini), also by Galileo, have both gone into training at
Ballydoyle, including this season=s Leopardstown maiden winner
Cole Porter (Ire), while this filly=s juvenile sister Key To My Heart
(Ire) fetched 1.3-million guineas at Tattersalls last October.
By the close of play, Coolmore and Mayfair Speculators had
signed for 12 yearlings for a total of 9,010,000gns.

Moyglare Adds A Frankel To The Family... A daughter of Frankel (GB) is headed for the racing stable--and
later the paddocks--of Moyglare Stud after being snapped up by
that nursery=s representative Fiona Craig, who outlasted the
likes of Roger Varian and Peter Doyle, for 900,000gns late in the
session on Thursday. Lot 522, consigned by Barronstown Stud, is
the fifth produce of the Grade III winner Cassydora (GB)
(Darshaan {GB}), and therefore a full-sister to this year=s G3 Prix
d=Aumale winner Toulifaut (Ire), who cost Katsumi Yoshida
i1.9-million at last weekend=s Arqana=s Arc Sale. They are half-
sisters to dual Group 3 winner Ernest Hemingway (Ire), a son of
Frankel=s sire Galileo (Ire).
AI=d better tell the owner [Moyglare=s Eva-Maria Bucher
Haefner] she bought a filly--she=s driving from Zurich airport
after spending the day in Paris,@ Craig said. AIt=s a shame she
couldn=t be here today, but she=s the one that=s been working.@
Craig noted the family--which, incidentally, traces back to
Zoffany, the half-brother to the 1.1-million guineas Frankel colt
sold earlier in the day--was one Moyglare wanted to get into.
AIt=s a gorgeous pedigree,@ Craig said. AThat=s what we need to
have, and they=re hard to buy. I loved the Galileo filly before
[the 2.1-million guineas full-sister to Alice Springs], she was an
absolute knockout. This filly will take a bit more time, but she=s
very Darshaan--she=s very nice. We=ll get her back to Ireland,
give her a bit of time off.@
Craig noted the Irish-based Moyglare currently has 38
broodmares, a handful of which are set to be sold.
AWe=re like everyone, we need to reduce the mares and up the
quality,@ she explained. ACompeting with Ballydoyle is not easy,
but that=s all we can do is keep trying to compete.@
She said the Frankel filly will let down at Moyglare for a few
weeks before joining trainer Dermot Weld.
Another Precious Mummy... Just as Newsells Park=s Shastye (Ire) (Danehill)--the dam of a
1.35-million guineas Galileo (Ire) filly on Wednesday--has
become a reliable source of revenue in this ring for Newsells
Park Stud, so too has the Montjeu (Ire) mare Yummy Mummy
(GB), whose daughter of Shamardal (lot 422) realised
870,000gns from Blandford Bloodstock on Thursday. Yummy
Mummy=s first six-figure Tattersalls October transaction came in
2012 when her Sea The Stars (Ire) colt made 575,000gns, and
the following year her Danehill Dancer daughter made
350,000gns from MV Magnier. Named Legatissimo, that one
went on to win the G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Nassau S. and G1
Matron S., and was crowned England=s champion 3-year-old filly
of 2015 while trained in Ireland by David Wachman for the
Coolmore partners. Magnier secured Yummy Mummy=s as-yet
unraced 2-year-old Redoute=s Choice (Aus) filly Smoulder (GB) at
this sale last year for 725,000gns.
Yummy Mummy is herself a full-sister to four-time Group 1-
winning stayer Fame And Glory (GB), and Godolphin=s G1
Champion S. and G1 Lockinge S.-winning sire Farhh (GB) (Pivotal
{GB}) appears under the third dam.
Blandford=s Richard Brown declined to name his client, but
noted the filly had been bought for an owner that has been busy
buying yearlings this year and that she would be trained in
Britain.
AI=ve seen her every day since she=s been here and she=s just
got better and better,@ Brown noted. AShe was quite tense when
she first arrived and she=s just got better and better. She was
nearly there yesterday and they pulled her out this morning and
off she went. She showed a very good action and a lot of class.@
Of the page, Brown added, AShamardal is a world-class stallion,
an exceptional stallion, and the female family speaks for itself.

genetics very often so it was really a once-this-year opportunity
we thought for a filly that we loved the female line, the stallion
and the physical. It all came together so we=re absolutely
delighted. Newsells have sold so many good horses over the

Angels Shine At Tattersalls... Saeed Suhail, whose colours have been carried by the likes of
last year=s GI Canadian International winner Cannock Chase
(Lemon Drop Kid) and this year=s G2 King Edward VII S. victor
Across The Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), has been busy buying
at Tattersalls this week through agent Charlie Gordon-Watson.
He signed for a 700,000gns Sea The Stars colt on Tuesday and
matched that sum early on Thursday when signing for lot 383, a
daughter of Dark Angel (Ire). The full-sister to the G3 Sweet
Solera S.-second Midnite Angel (Ire) represented a pinhooking
homerun for consignor Michael Carty=s Kilmoney Cottage Stud,
which picked up the bay for i145,000 at last year=s Goffs
November Foal Sale.
The daughter of the unraced Two Sets To Love (Ire) (Cadeaux
Genereux {GB}) was the second of two strong sales for Dark
Angel early in the session, with lot 378, a colt by the
Yeomanstown Stud resident, having fetched 500,000gns from
Shadwell agent Angus Gold a short time earlier. That colt from
Ballyhimikin Stud is the first foal out of the dual Group 3 winner
Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who is herself a
daughter of triple group-winning sprinter Cassandra Go (Ire)
(Indian Ridge {GB}) and therefore a half-sister to triple Group 1
and Classic winner Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and
Group 3 winner Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), the dam
of Grade I winner Photo Call (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
"He is from a beautiful and fast family that has been consistent
all the way through," said Gold. "He is also by a good stallion and
we are delighted to get this horse.@
Godolphin Dream On... With Wednesday=s eight-length Nottingham maiden winner
Dreamfield (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) having fueled Godolphin=s
Classic hopes for next season, John Ferguson plumped for
another colt by the Juddmonte sire (lot 477) from the
Castlebridge Consignment for 600,00gns on Thursday.
The first living foal of the Hurricane Run mare Azanara (Ire),
the colt was bred by brothers Martin and Lee Taylor, who raced
Classic winner Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire})--another
Ferguson purchase for 4-millions guineas in the same ring back
in 2013. His dam is a half-sister to the Aga Khan=s G1 Prix Ganay
winner Astarabad (Alleged) and to the dam of four-time Group 1
winner and Classic-producing sire Azamour (Ire) (Night Shift),
who died in 2014.
"He was a lovely colt and we're absolutely delighted," said
Martin Taylor, who owns four mares in partnership with his
brother. "We're firm believers in Oasis Dream and Azanara has a
colt foal by him and is back in foal to him."
Freshman Sire Watch... As had already been demonstrated at Arqana in August, two
Group 1-winning sons of Montjeu (Ire) and Galileo (Ire)--
Camelot (GB) and Intello (Ger)--have been quick to find favour
with buyers in the upper tier of the market and that continued
to be the case at Tattersalls with the two virtually neck-and-neck
in the sires= table. At the end of Book 1, Intello, who had 10 sell
from 12 offered, averaged 185,000gns with a pair of colts
bringing 300,000gns each. Camelot=s 17 to sell from 23 put
through the ring recorded an average price of 171,176gns, with
his most expensive yearling being Clare Castle Stud=s colt out of
a half-sister to New Bay (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who sold for
400,000gns.
Declaration Of War (War Front), who left Ireland for Kentucky
after his first season at stud, had 11 Book 1 yearlings sold for an
average of 157,273gns, including Al Shaqab Racing=s 380,000gns
purchase from Glenvale Stud of lot 324, a half-brother to
listed-placed Barsanti (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}).
Society Rock (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) died from colic
earlier this year but the four members of his first crop offered at
Tattersalls this week all sold for a highly respectable average of

Havana Gold (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) had just two yearlings in
Book 1, both colts, who sold for 200,000gns and 50,000gns,
respectively, while Dawn Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire})
was represented by 21 yearlings in Book 1, with 13 selling for an
average of 124,923gns. Chief among these was Stauffenberg
Bloodstock=s bold 180,000gns foal pinhook (lot 456) who was
resold to Al Shaqab Racing for 275,000gns.
Chairman=s Statement... At the conclusion of Book 1 of the 2016 Tattersalls October
Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony
commented, AAs recently as 2010 the turnover at Book 1 of the
Tattersalls October Yearling Sale was below 50-million guineas
and the average price was just over 100,000gns. Last year the
sale turnover broke through 80-million guineas for the first time
and that record has been bettered again in 2016, while the
average price has exceeded 220,000gns for the third
consecutive year. In addition, we have sold a record nine
yearlings for 1-million guineas or more this week, including the
two sale-topping Dubawi colts, whose 2.6-million guineas price
tags make them the highest-priced auction yearlings in the
world this year.@
AEvery year since 2012 Book 1 of the Tattersalls October
Yearling Sale has produced the world=s highest priced auction
yearling which reflects the extraordinary quality of the yearlings
the consignors consistently bring to the sale,@ Mahony
continued. ABook 1 attracts the cream of British and Irish
yearlings as well as some outstanding individuals from French,
German and Italian breeders, and the depth to the catalogue is
the key to attracting so many of the world=s leading owners to
the sale. As well as the quality of the yearlings in Book 1, we
should also acknowledge the part played by the unprecedented
strength amongst the stallions currently standing in Britain and
Ireland, most notably Dubawi, Frankel and Galileo, who have
shared this week's nine seven-figure yearlings between them.
AStallions of such global stature are a massive draw and we
have welcomed buyers this week from throughout the world
including America, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and South Africa
as well as a hugely influential number of individual buyers from
throughout the Gulf region.@
AWhile we can reflect on the positives to come from the past
three days, it would be wrong to overlook the polarisation in the
market place as the foal crops grow,@ Mahony noted. ADemand
for the very best yearlings has been as strong, if not stronger,
than ever, and that is reflected in the record number of seven
figure yearlings and record turnover.
The clearance rate, however, has not matched last year=s
levels and increasing selectivity is becoming a feature of the
bloodstock market which presents both breeders and sales
companies with challenges. Nevertheless, we now turn our
attention to Books 2, 3 and 4 of the Tattersalls October Yearling
Sale starting on Monday and as ever we have quality catalogues
which look set to appeal to a wide cross-section of buyers."

He says, AI=m an old guy and I tried to retire when I was 75 and
now I=m five years older than that and I=m thinking to myself
that I=m glad I didn=t retire as I nearly experienced depression.
The legs might be weak but it=s important to work harder as you
get older and to keep your brain active.@
Earlier this year, he bought the G1 Racing Post Trophy winner
Marcel (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) privately from former owner Paul
Hancock, and though his dreams were shattered when the Peter
Chapple-Hyam-trained
colt injured his knee in
his only start this
season in the
G1 QIPCO 2000
Guineas, a new dream
has begun with his
horse=s retirement to
the National Stud in
Newmarket.
AWhen I saw Marcel
win the Racing Post Trophy I thought to myself that he could be
better than Starcraft the way he came through the field from
last to first,@ Makin recalls. AHe could have raced on at four but
he=d already won a Group 1 and I knew the injury would put the
whole of his 3-year-old career away. He=s a beautiful horse, I
love him, so I decided to stand him at stud.@
While a new stallion venture might prompt a rash of mare
purchases from some owners, Makin is taking a different tack in
his support of Marcel.
AI=m not going to send him any mares myself but I want to buy
six or seven of his foals or yearlings,@ he explains. AI was chatting
to Dermot Farrington and told him I didn't want all the work of
standing a stallion--it would be different if I had my own farm--
so we thought then of the National Stud. They=re very good
people with 500 acres and well set up to do the job properly.@
In his strategy for Marcel=s first season, Makin=s plans will
doubtless be music to the ears of breeders concerned with the
rise in stallion fees and in the number of mares covered.
He continues, AMarcel is going to stand for ,5,000 and I only
want 80 mares to him, that=s the limit. If I get 50 or 60 I don=t
mind--at ,5,000 I=m not in it for money. I priced him like that in
the hope of encouraging some Irish mares as it costs extra to
ship them.
AI really believe in him. He=s such a beautiful mover--very light
on his feet--and he=s from a family that I like and know a lot
about. [Mulitple Group 1 winner] At Talaq is from that family
and he was very versatile--he won from six furlongs to two
miles, including the Melbourne Cup.@
As if to emphasise his belief in the family, Makin, a famously
bold and flamboyant bidder, returned to the fray at Tattersalls
this week to buy Marcel=s half-brother by Lope De Vega (Ire)
from Oghill House Stud for 150,000gns (lot 187). The colt will
follow his brother to St Gatien Stables in Newmarket.
APeter Chapple-Hyam will train him for me,@ Makin reveals.
AWe were both disappointed that his brother couldn=t train on.
Peter=s a great trainer and quite mad, but so am I--we=re the
perfect combination.@
As one colt joins Makin=s select string of horses in training in
Newmarket another is set to leave. His homebred Sky Kingdom
(Ire) (Montjeu {Ire})--a son of Makin=s dual Group 1-winning
Starcraft mare We Can Say It Now (Aus) and recent winner of
the G3 Prix du Prince d=Orange at Maisons-Laffitte--is off to
Australia and will be trained by Starcraft=s former conditioner
Gary Newham.
AMy family is in Australia and I=m in the process of moving back
to Australia from Hong Kong. I don=t spend a huge amount of
time in the UK any more but I really want to do this stallion
venture,@ Makin says. ADermot Farrington and Andrew Nolan
from Goffs are both old friends and they are helping me with it. I
like the involvement with the industry--I love the mystery of it
all.@
The excitement of seeing Marcel=s first offspring brought to
the sales from 2018 and beyond will doubtless hold the stallion=s
owner in thrall to the bloodstock business for years to come.

BLUE SPECTRE It is hard to be any more impressive than Sobetsu (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}) was over the Rowley Mile Sept. 17 and
Godolphin=s >TDN Rising Star= cuts a fearsome figure in Friday=s
G1 Dubai Fillies= Mile back at Newmarket. The relative of
Generous (Ire) scored by 10 lengths on her second start over
this course and distance and now that stablemate Wuheida (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}) has captured
Sunday=s G1 Prix Marcel Boussac

entitled to be optimistic. AIt was
a big step from her first to her
second run and you could say
this is a huge leap, to group one
company but we always had the
Fillies= Mile in mind for her and it
was always our intention to run
here this week,@ he said. AWe felt
she had already proven herself
on the Rowley Mile and, by
coming here instead of Chantilly last weekend, it gave her more
time between runs.@ Appleby continued, "Sobetsu and Wuheida
are the two stand-out fillies in my yard, two very imposing
daughters of Dubawi with hopefully bright three-year-old
careers ahead of them. If Sobetsu could complete the group one
double it would be fantastic for the team and fantastic for
Dubawi as well--he's already a renowned worldwide stallion but
it would give a new status to his reputation."
Sobetsu was third on debut behind Cheveley Park Stud=s
Spatial (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) over seven furlongs on the
July Course here Aug. 26, with that rival previously finishing
runner-up to Wuheida on debut over the same track and trip 20
days earlier. "We're very happy with her," Cheveley Park Stud's
managing director Chris Richardson said. "Obviously there's a lot
of hype about the form and the way the form of her races have
turned out. It's all been boosted in every which way. We like
her. She's a filly with a future." How they measure up to the
established pattern-race fillies remains to be seen, with this race
the preserve of the already proven performers of late. All of the
last 10 heroines had achieved black-type prior to this test and
the three benchmark runners this time include a pair from
Ballydoyle, successful in the last two renewals. Hydrangea (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) went down by a head to Rhododendron (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) in the G2 Debutante S. over seven furlongs at The
Curragh Aug. 21, only to reverse the form when in that same
position in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. back over the same course
and distance Sept. 11.
Rhododendron may have been compromised by the way the
latter race was run and looked to be in need of this extra furlong
when staying on to be third, with the fifth-placed Promise To Be
True (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) providing a boost to the form by filling
the runner=s-up spot in the Marcel Boussac. Aidan O'Brien said
of his pair, "They are in good form, both of them. There wasn't
much between them when they met the time before and there
wasn't too far between them in the Moyglare either. The trip
and ground shouldn't be a problem, either. We always thought
they would get further than seven furlongs." Qatar Racing=s Rich
Legacy (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) won one of this race=s
key pointers, the G2 May Hill S. at Doncaster Sept. 8, with
another Appleby representative Grecian Light (Ire) (Shamardal)

FASCINATING COX PLATE TAKING SHAPE The G1 Cox Plate Oct. 22 is shaping up to be a thriller given the
news that Godolphin are keen to have another crack at star
mare Winx (Aus) (Ire) with their exciting Hartnell (GB)
(Authorized {Ire}). Although he has been beaten by Chris
Waller=s mare on three occasions Hartnell seems to have
brought his form to a new level recently as evidenced by his
easy three length defeat of Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) in
the G1 Yellowglen Turnbull S. at Flemington Oct 2. Explaining
their decision Goodolphin=s Australian manager Henry Plumtre
said, "John Ferguson
didn't think there was
much point running

to split them up.@
Assuming everything goes
to plan for Winx in her G1 Caulfield S. test she will be seeking
back to back Cox Plate victories but that is of no real concern to
trainer John O=Shea. "We are all about getting our own house in
order, it is really no consideration what else is in the race,"
O=Shea told racing.com. "It would be an honour to win a Cox
Plate for His Highness but again as to what is in it, we are not
going to give any focus to that. With regard to the competition
factor, I think that is more for the racing public to get involved
in, we are just about getting our own house in order." What
O=Shea was emphatic about is the condition of his challenger
following a busy recent time when he ran three times in four
weeks. "You wouldn't know Hartnell had a run to be honest, he
dropped only 1kg for the day out," O'Shea said. "He has made
good improvement again, we are happy with where he is at and
I'm happy with the three weeks going into the Cox Plate."
WINX VS BART Despite only three horse going to post the G1 Ladrokes
Caulfield S. has the look of a fascinating albeit tactical contest. It
only takes two to have a horse race and the credentials of Winx

imperious so far this season
and having come through her
final preparations in pleasing
style, Brad Rawiller, rider of
Back Heart Bart is giving nothing away as to what tactics he may
deploy in the race. "I don't see what benefit it is me trying to say
how I'm going to ride him," Rawiller told Racing And Sports. "I
think we'll cross that path come Saturday when I speak to
Darren [Weir] and the team. There's so many things can happen
between now and then, and even wind on the day can be a
factor." While acknowledging the mammoth task at hand
Rawiller believes his mount is a worthy opponent for Winx.
"There's no question that Winx has got the runs on the board as
far as she's Australia's best horse. I don't think anyone can
question that. But Black Heart Bart can't have done any more
than he's done. All you can do is win and when he hasn't won
he's been so game in defeat. I'm not seeing why we're not right
in the race up to our ears." There is an old adage that the
>outsider of three= should always be feared and while He Or She
is a solid horse with top level form to his credit he looks safely
held by the other pair on all recent form.

valuable Group 1 of the day and a field of 14 colts line up for the

distaff Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American {Aus}) who is favourite
to achieve such a feat on Saturday. The 3-year-old is bidding for
her second Group 1 win having secured the G1 Inglis Sires= at
Randwick in April. She was beaten half a length into second by
Global Glamour (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}) in the G1 Sydney
Airport Flight S. at Randwick just last Saturday so Vandyke has
obviously been pleased with her condition in the interim. In fact
he is even looking
beyond the Spring
Champion with Yankee
Rose as he commented,

albeit beaten narrow margins. Second and fourth in the
Gloaming were the John O=Shea trained pair Honeywine (Aus)
(Street Cry {Ire}) and Retaliation (Aus) (Bernardini) and
Godolphin=s Henry Plumptre was upbeat about their chances.
"Both colts are among the stable's more prominent Derby
candidates and both are in great form. Honeywine looks like an
out-and-out stayer who will be well-suited by the extra ground,"
he said. The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes trained Swear
(Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}) has been done no favours being
drawn 11 of 11 but co-trainer Michael thinks the lightly raced
colt can still make an impact. "Unfortunately he's drawn
awkward but he gets his chance to win because he's a good
colt," he said.

Royal Rapture (Aus) (Clangalang {Aus}) is going for six in a row
while the market leader He=s Our Rokki (Aus) (Roc De Cambes
{NZ}) bids to extend his run of success to five. The Hayes &
Dabernig trained 4-year-old logged two late season Group 3
races at Randwick in April and resumed the current season in
similar form winning a
Caulfield Handicap in
August and following up in
a similar contest Sept. 17.
Assessing his chances on
Saturday co-trainer Tom
Dabernig commented,
"He's had two runs at the
1400 metres and in a
handicap like the Toorak
he gets into it well. It really looks like a Group One that he could
win but he also gets beyond the mile.@ The training team also
field the veteran Jacquinot Bay (Aus) (Galileo {Ire}) who has
faced some stiff tasks of late including when finishing fourth to
Black Heart Bart in the G1 Underwood S. "He's been racing in
career-best form but he normally finds one or two better than
