fast for a world harvest letter

To the College community: Once again, this Thanksgiving, we are holding a campus Fast for a World Harvest to benefit Oxfam America, a well-known and wonderfully effective organization for famine relief and self-help for hungry people around the world (www.oxfam.org ). Next week an Oxfam table will be set up in the lobby of the dining hall. Those who are on the meal plan may sign up to miss lunch and/or dinner on November 20 th , 21 st , and 22 nd by emailing me or by alerting one of the volunteers operating the Oxfam table. It is imperative that you alert us at least one day in advance of your planned fast, because the number of students fasting will be forwarded to Bon Appetit, who will prepare less food accordingly. They will then contribute the cost of your meal to Oxfam. Sign up for as many of these six meals as you wish, but please remember that once you sign, you are honor- bound not to go through the food line at that meal. Make a note of which meal(s) you’ve signed up for. As a reminder, a list of those who’ve signed up for a given meal will be posted on the wall in the dining hall lobby. If you are not on the meal plan but would like to contribute, you may send or give donations to me either in person or through campus mail. (Checks should be made payable to “St. John’s College,” with the notation, “Oxfam donation.”) All financial contributors are tax-deductible, and financial donors will be given a receipt after the fast ends. Oxfam focuses on long-term solutions, empowerment of local farmers and businesses, and industrial transparency. They continue to actively help hundreds of thousands of people—oil spill victims in the Gulf and earthquake victims in Haiti, for example. You can help too. Sincerely,
