motorsport rules, okPrepare for Safety and Performance

In the last couple of articles we've looked at preparing your road car to pass scrutineering. This time we'll look at modifications to improve performance and safety. Some of the earlier advice, removing loose objects from the car and checking everything is working properly will help by reducing weight and distractions, allowing you to concentrate on the task of driving. For events like autotests, trials and navigation rallies, that may be almost all you need to do. Though for navigation rallies, good lights, a navigator and a map light are essentials. You may want to increase the tyre pressures by 2-3 psi as this can reduce the tyres tendency to distort when cornering. For trials, where low speed grip is at a premium, reducing tyre pressures to distort when cornering. For trials, where low speed grip is at a premium, reducing tyre pressures will probably help with traction. There may be minimum specified tyres pressures. You also need to make sure you can control the car; it may seem simple, but make sure the seat and steering are adjusted properly and you can steer effectively. This doesn't mean having straight arms as in single seaters, but being able to reach the top of the wheel without stretching. Being secure within the car is also important, for the driver and any passenger. Seat belts must be worn in most disciplines. In road car classes, the standard lap and diagonal belt will be the minimum road car classes, the standard lap and diagonal belt will be the minimum requirement, but upgrading to a full harness will secure you even better. The next step would be a competition seat which will work to link you better to the car. These modifications will help your safety, comfort and improve performance for little cost.Thinking about safety, apart from autotests, trials and road events, you will need some personal safety equipment. The most obvious is head protection; helmets need to comply with MSA specifications which are different to those helmets need to comply with MSA specifications which are different to those required for use on the road when on motorbikes. The most common standards are Snell SA2005, or SA2010.

The most common standards are Snell SA2005, or SA2010.

You will probably need to get a helmet from one of the specialist motorsport suppliers and try a few on before you decide which to buy. They need to fit well and be securely fastened when competing. Helmets must be free from damage, so look after them, don't drop them, or leave them to rattle around inside the car. Frontal Head Restraints, such as HANS® devices are not required in most disciplines, but for high speed events can greatly reduce the risk of neck injuries. Flame resistant overalls are usually required when ever helmets are required. Again, these must be in good condition, and clean. The most common standard is FIA 8856-2000, but some events will allow the use of the older condition, and clean. The most common standard is FIA 8856-2000, but some events will allow the use of the older FIA 1986 Standard. Fire resistant gloves may also be needed for some disciplines. Flame resistant shoes might be needed for some events, but usually thin soled shoes will help with delicate control of the pedals. However, I used to wear walking boots when competing in Cross Country trials.

Now you'll have some ideas of things you may have to do to your car, or kit you may need to buy, you can spend the next few weeks planning, dropping hints about useful Christmas presents. It will soon be the start of a new season of motorsport. I'm going to be spending the next few months working with other club officials, checking and updating Technical Regulations officials, checking and updating Technical Regulations for about 6 race championships and Super Lap Scotland. I might even manage to scrutineer at a rally or two. I hope to see some of you on events next year.

Scottish Ford Fiesta Championship 2014

XR racing in 2014 was close and exciting as Hamish Smart and Steven Gray

fought hard to 7 wins apiece.

It’s been a common theme in recent years in Scottish Fiesta racing that at the start of each new season we haven’t had a returning category champion, and the same was the case in 2014. It would have been a brave man who would have predicted how the season would play out with our 2013 XR Champ Wayne Macauley stepping into an ST, and ST champ George Orr feigning retirement to confuse us all. So with so many new faces in the ranks, something that Fiesta racing always delivers given our proper budget motorsport roots, we had a belting season to look forward to!

Steven has contested the championship for many years but work commitments have meant that he has rarely been able to enter all rounds. This year his experience told as he racked up 7 wins from our 16 starts en route to a slender 19 point margin as the curtains closed. His competition all year was another experienced campaigner in Hamish Smart who also racked up 7 wins in his pursuit, but DNF’s held him back with 3 compared to Steven’s 2. A very notable third in the order was newcomer Jim Deans running in Peter Cruickshank’s 2012 title winner, and he was still mathematically in with a shout as we Jim Deans running in Peter Cruickshank’s 2012 title winner, and he was still mathematically in with a shout as we entered the last round, something he achieved with a win mid-season but ultimate consistency too! In both categories it was heartening to see so many new faces and strength of support for our championship with Jim, John Balfour and Josh Orr adding to the old hands in Steven and Hamish and making some entertaining five-way battles throughout the XR season.

Josh will be back as will Duncan Langton, who had to sit out later in the year, and Adrian Blantford who was getting into 2015 mood early with a nut and bolt strip down of his own XR, and great to have the Butterworth pairing own XR, and great to have the Butterworth pairing of brother and sister Gavin and Annie late in the year too – they’ll also be back, hopefully in a car each!ST’s had similar depth and enjoyed seeing Chris Milford arrive late in the season and turn in some great laps whilst we had Martha Aitken drive a guest role at the last meet of the year in preparation for a commitment down south. Hopefully we’ll see them both back along with the usual suspects of Ward, Whyte and Runcie amongst others.

Behind every successful driver (and co-driver) there is a whole team of individuals, each with their own responsibilities and tasks, and each making their own contribution towards team morale and success.

Even the head tea-boy or girl. That’s not as silly as it sounds, because stewed tea and stale cakes can affect morale, and if you don’t have the right spirit within a team, then you can forget about winning. It goes without saying that any team is only as strong as its weakest member. Every successful driver knows that.

Any driver who can command respect and adulation from every member of a team is halfway towards achieving success, the other half comes from the right car and sufficient budget. What that all means is that there are success, the other half comes from the right car and sufficient budget. What that all means is that there are opportunities at all levels of motor sport for enthusiasts to make a career for themselves. The hours are long, the work is hard, and sometimes the pay is not so good, but what price job satisfaction?

Naturally, drivers take the starring role, but those who help to put them and keep them at the top play an essential role in team performance. They too suffer the disappointment of losing and the elation of winning.

Until he bumped into a friend who was helping to organise ‘Rally Australia’ David was living in Western Australia working for the government:. “My previous work was with the government's 'Special Service Group' (SSG), I was an electrical technician”. From 1996 onwards he has worked for numerous World Rally teams, Endurance Motor Racing teams and a number of F1 teams but gave up his nomadic life in 2010. Almost.

Not only was I driving a world rally car for the first time on an event that I had no previous experience of, but I was also doing all of that with a new co-driver – Giovanni Bernacchini. Q: When did you find out that you will be joining the WRC team for 2014?A: It was pretty late in the year. I hoped that we would have some form of programme with M-Sport – whether that be another season in WRC 2 or a part-time programme with a world rally car – but when Malcolm called me and offered me a full-time seat, I couldn't quite believe it.

Q: What was your funniest moment so far in 2014 season?A: There have been a few, but there was a particularly funny moment in Australia. Both myself and Jarmo [Lehtinen, Mikko Hirvonen's co-driver] had been nominated to do an ice bucket challenge but hadn't found the time to do it. After the podium we came back into the service area and were told that we had to do a joint interview. We were standing in front of one of the to do a joint interview. We were standing in front of one of the containers and just as the 'interview' started, two of our mechanics threw ice cold water – a lot of ice cold water – over us from on top of the container. Everyone was in on it apart from me and Jarmo. That was fairly funny, especially Jarmo's reaction!

Q: And the best moment/result from your point of view?A:A: Germany was definitely the high-light of the season. It was my first time there in a world rally car and I think we performed well. I hoped that we would be able to show an increase in pace on the more familiar events but to be able to challenge people like Mikko [Hirvonen] and Mads [Østberg] who have so much experience was really good to see and bodes well for the future.

Q:Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?A: In 10 years' time I hope to have been challenging for an FIA World Rally Championship. It will take a lot of dedication and a lot of hard work, but it is what I want and I will do everything I can to make it happen

Q: More manufacturers are testing their WRC cars, which is great for future of WRC. How do you feel about it?A: Absolutely, the more manufacturers the better. Everyone is aware that we need to work hard to make the sport more prominent and more accessible, but everything is moving in the right direction and if more manufacturers more prominent and more accessible, but everything is moving in the right direction and if more manufacturers come on board then I think that would be fantastic.

Q: What is your procedure (if you have any) before the stage starts?A: I think my procedure is pretty standard. I check my belts, then as the clock times down to 15 seconds I select first gear, at eight seconds I select stage mode and put the car into launch with about five seconds to go, then we're off.

Q: Would you like to send a message to your UK fans?A: Thanks for all of your support and I hope to see a lot of you out on the stages and in the service park at Wales Rally GB!Wales Rally GB!

Page 33: Faster scotland 04

The defending champion was back to his imperious best on the Border Counties, finishing nearly a minute ahead of Thorburn, with Jock Armstrong and new navigator Paula Swinscoe clinching the final championship podium spot in their distinctive orange Subaru. However, a month later, the Borderer notched up win No 2 on the Granite City, with Armstrong second and Faulkner third: the pair engaged in a battle for the minor podium places which would endure until the final round.

Bogie took a big hit in Aberdeen – the Focus engine expiring after one stage – but it was to be his last time in the car. It was retired to the family garage in Dumfries, and out came a brand spanking new M-Sport Ford Focus R5+ car. It was retired to the family garage in Dumfries, and out came a brand spanking new M-Sport Ford Focus R5+ - with the specific aim of getting it set up for Wales Rally GB in November.

Despite what Bogie described as "a real learning experience – adapting my driving style, my braking lines, everything!", he pipped Thorburn by just three and a half seconds on the RSAC Scottish Rally, and went on to take his second victory in the R5+ on the Speyside: the winning margin over his Borders rival a more comfortable 13 seconds. Armstrong was again "the best of the rest" in third.

So, at the mid-season point, it was two wins apiece for the championship contenders, but it certainly wasn't all about the leading pair. There were close-wasn't all about the leading pair. There were close-fought battles throughout the various classes, refle-cting the strength and depth of the Scottish series.

Among them, an increasingly confident Dale Robertson was chasing Fraser Wilson for Mitsubishi EVO Group N honours, and would ultimately take the title by just three seconds on the final round; in the 1600cc category, young the final round; in the 1600cc category, young Dumfriesshire Escort Mk2 pilot Greg McKnight – who'd go on to lift the Scottish Junior crown – was dicing with Alasdair S.Graham in his Vauxhall Corsa; Borderer Callum Atkinson (Ford Fiesta), Dumfries driver Chuck Blair (Peugeot 205GTi), and Highlander Scott MacBeth (Vauxhall Nova), were on course to winning their respective classes; were on course to winning their respective classes; and rallying legend Steve Bannister had already wrapped up the Clubman 2WD championship in his historic-spec Mk2.

The tipping-point in the overall title race was the Merrick Stages in Galloway, where Thorburn outpaced the rest of the field to finish 35 seconds ahead of Faulkner, with Bogie third: the champion resigned to the fact that the 1600cc R5+ lacked "grunt" on the faster stages, compared to the 2-litre Focus.

And so to a tense Colin McRae Stages in Aberfeldy – where it was "all or nothing" for Bogie if he was to hang onto his crown. The 27-year-old gave it absolutely everything, before losing it on the last stage when the Fiesta slipped off the road. Thorburn passed the stricken car and then had to make his way back nervously to the finish in one piece:one piece:"I can't believe it's happened after all these years trying to win the championship", said a delighted Thorburn as the champagne was sprayed: "When you look at the names on the trophy, it's great to get your name on there – absolutely brilliant". Co-driver Beaton summed it up perfectly: "It's something we've been dreaming about since we were wee boys!".

The curtain was brought down on a thrilling season at a wet and windy Galloway Hills: Jock Armstrong bagged his seventh win on his local event and secured third in the championship behind Thorburn and Bogie, with Faulkner fourth. And look out in 2015 for Inverness-based EVO crew Dougal Brown and Lewis Rochford, who took the final podium spot in Castle Douglas – the best of three successive top-five finishes.

Meanwhile, the outgoing champion – who was runner-up on the day – used the event to fine-tune the Fiesta ahead of his international debut in Wales:

"I was really encouraged with our pace, given that we were running at reduced power, with new tyres, and "I was really encouraged with our pace, given that we were running at reduced power, with new tyres, and different fuel, to comply with WRC regulations. We made changes to the suspension – again that improved the car. All these changes for Wales Rally GB have worked perfectly".

Jordan Black started his carreer with Peugeot 205 about 6 years ago. Since then he gained experience and knowledge, which was transfered to his new Citroen C2 car as a development project. How did his season go and what were his thoughts? Lets find out...

Q: How long how you been involved in rallying? A: I've been involved in the sport since around 2006 when I got in tow Jock Gray who rallied a mk1 escort at the time, used to spend a lot of time in garage just watching and learning all prep work going on before I found myself getting dragged along to service at scottish champion ship rallies. I then got a run in the car and that was me getting dragged along to service at scottish champion ship rallies. I then got a run in the car and that was me hooked on the sport. Next thing I knew I was saving every penny of my apprentice wages to buy myself my 1st 205 rally car! 6 years later I'm still at it!

Q: What made you to switch from 205 to C2?A: Felt i needed a change at the end of 2013 season had built and wrecked a fair few 205s in my time so decided I fancied something more modern. When the chat came up about a new c2 one make Ecosse challenge championship came up it was a no brainer. Ecosse Challenge organisers talked me into building, running and developing a.....what would you call it a donor car? Built to challenge spec on a fairly low budget to a ee what it would be like, and how it would compare with the 205.

Q: Did you build it yourself? A: Yes built it myself as I did with the last two 205s it's the way forward! Only thing I never done was fit the roll cage but other than that worked away At nights and weekends in the garage it really is quite satisfying! Although When things go wrong you won't here me blaming others you'll find me trying to resolve the problem as it would be my doing in the first place. The only thing I can't take credit for is the vinyls, the finishing touches as they say Joey from Evolution Customs rocked up with plenty of cool ideas and well what can I say the car looks stunning! Q: What type of C2 it is?A: Its built to an Ecosse challenge spec. (Final regs will be brought out soon) but it's pretty much standard other than all the usual safety gear but had AVO coilovers all round and a gripper diff fitted, fair bit of strengthening went into it as well but that's just us playing with the welder. Engine, wiring and most of running gear remains standard though

Q: Now that you have done a few rallies in C2 what is the overall feeling? A:A: overall feeling is good it's a nice handling stable wee car! Could be doing with a wee bit more poke up the straights and things but I guess if your in a one make championship were all on the same boat so it doesn't become an issue! They would be a fantastic starter car or for juniors stepping up into the woods from J1000, are an all round cheep rally car who wants competitive rallying at a low budget.

Q: As with any new car, they come with bugs. Didyou eot rid of them?A: Yea think so we were all on for a good run on mull we were more than half way through the rally (as we were more than half way through the rally (as Tough a rally as you'll get this around these parts can I just add) haha and she was sailing all the way with no issues, then bang the clutch had enough. Had I apaddle clutch I reckon we would have got the end with out any mechanical issues.

Q: What is the plan with the car over the winter? A:A: Just a tidy up! Get the fine tooth comb out and see if I can find any potential issues before they crop up but nothing really! Try attract a few more sponsors and maybe a new livery if Evolution Customs are feeling generous ha! Oh and I'm in the process of making a new exhaust want everyone to know it's me coming hurdling through the woods!

Q: What is your plan for next year? A:A: At moment it's not going to be an awful lot will have to wait and see what crops up over winter.

Q: Who has been sponsoring you this year?A: . I've been backed this year by long terms sponsors Onestop motor engineers, who have been amazing along with Tunnock's, Field Track portable road hire over the past few years with out there generosity none of this would be happening! Managed to pick up a few more sponsors The Apple Pie Bakery and Powertune Scotland.

Q: Would you like to send a message to our readers?A: Get involved people!! Fantastic exciting sport going on here rite on our doorsteps weather it's building competing or out spectating, get involved and stay safe! If your out watching the stages pick a spot well back from competing or out spectating, get involved and stay safe! If your out watching the stages pick a spot well back from the road up high ( these are the best bits) where you can see most of the action and stay well out the road of the cars. During the 2013 Ecosse Challenge prize giving in Glasgow after all the awards had been handed out (and I was reunited with the bumper I left behind in the Perthshire forests on the McRae Stages) organisers began to talk about plans for the coming years. There was the usual chat about change of events or point system perhaps, then they mentioned a new formula; Citroen C2s as a possible replacement for the ageing Peugeot 205 which we have competed in over the last few years. After a few a few shandies Andy Pemberton asked me what my plans were for the 2014 season. So I must have been rattling on with my wild ideas about maybe building this that or the next thing, although really wanting to buy a Fiesta ST but not being able to do so without taking a mortgage to finance thing, although really wanting to buy a Fiesta ST but not being able to do so without taking a mortgage to finance it. This is when Andy gave me the opportunity to build the Citroen C2 and I jumped at the chance. Not long after this I picked up a high mileage road car, brought it straight home and stripped her down on the first night. Everything seemed very straightforward until I got to the removal of the fuel tank! Six hours to get it out…. at one point the car was in a million bits. Half my tools were either bent or sheared. I was just sitting there with my knuckles burst thinking ‘what have I done!? Just how many shandies had I consumed at the awards when I agreed to this? I can honestly say though from my experience (and I’m just a plumber remember) that was the I agreed to this? I can honestly say though from my experience (and I’m just a plumber remember) that was the hardest point of building the car! Other than welding in the roll cage and Joey from Evolution Customs adding the finishing touches making her look pretty with the design and sponsor decals, myself with the help of my old man and friends Hamish and Alan did the lot. There were a few late nights burning the midnight oil and all the usual caper involved in building a rally car, as any one will tell you but the C2 certainly wasn’t difficult. More importantly it was done on an affordable budget which I’m happy to discuss with anyone, as I’m quite sure a lot of people in the rallying world won’t believe what it cost. A lot of this is down to Andy Pemberton’s fantastic of people in the rallying world won’t believe what it cost. A lot of this is down to Andy Pemberton’s fantastic ability to haggle any man down to strike a better deal! It’s very similar to the build of a 205 challenge car or any other 2WD group N car. Everything including the engine, wiring and management system all remains standard. The suspension is an up rated AVO unit and the gearbox has a Gripper Limited Slip diff fitted. Other than the usual safety and protective equipment there you have it. What more can you ask for!? A modern day well handling light little car with a fair bit of power under the bonnet built for the cost of the season fuel bill for some of the 4WD cars! It really is a joy to just jump into and bonnet built for the cost of the season fuel bill for some of the 4WD cars! It really is a joy to just jump into and drive, our first run in the car proved this where we were leading the class at Kames before unfortunately breaking a drive shaft. Development is still ongoing just now as we eliminate our teething problems and come up with the best set up until I am happy with the car (whenever that may be as I can be quite particular.) I am confident the car has the ability to compete with far more advanced and expensive factory built R2 cars out there and my aim for this season is to prove that. The foundations for a fantastic new one make championship for 2015 are there, with second to none organisers who have plenty experience in the game so all I can say is get building people! 2014 Blue Scottish Tarmack Rally Championship

After a ten round championship which commenced way back in January at Knockhill, the title of 2014 Blue Scottish Tarmack Rally Champion was decided on the final round at the beginning of November. Not only that, it was decided just two stages form the end of a very nail-biting day.

Going into the final round at Crail, Ian and Kathryn Forgan had a 4 point lead over Paul Ballantyne and Graham Bruce in the race for the 2014 title. Ballantyne needed to finish ahead of his rival with at least four registered competitors between them. Even before the start, Ballantyne admitted this was going to be unlikely given the pace of defending Champion Forgan's 2 litre Ka over the past year. But this is rallying, anything can happen. And it did.of defending Champion Forgan's 2 litre Ka over the past year. But this is rallying, anything can happen. And it did.

At the half way point in the rally, Forgan was lying fifth in Class 3 with Ballantyne three class places adrift in eighth. Then came stage 5: "It was my own fault," said a dejected Ian, "I was catching a car approaching the merge. It was a 'red mist moment', Kathryn was already shouting 'Left, Left, Left' at me, but I just thought I could get past him and make the turn. I did - and went Right!"

The resultant four minute penalty dropped Forgan to 65th place overall leaving Ballantyne and Bruce to complete a nerve wracking two more stages to clinch the title in their Renault Clio.

"Ian's a terrific driver," said "Ian's a terrific driver," said Ballantyne afterwards, "I really didn't think there was much hope at the start of the day. To be honest, I can't quite get my head round the way things developed, evolved and turned out at the end. For now, I'll just say a huge thanks to our support just say a huge thanks to our support crew."

The Forgan family therefore finished runners-up in the 2014 BLUE points chase but were first to congratulate the winners with Forgan adding: "If I had to lose out to anyone, it couldn't have been to a nicer guy than Paul."

Stephen Thomson finished third overall in his Escort MkII despite retiring on the first stage. Apparently the engine lost power half way round the test and then just engine lost power half way round the test and then just died on him. Thompson was last seen taking the bonnet off and chucking it away like a giant frisbee - ever so slightly dischuffed, but at least he didn't lose out championship-wise.

Although John Rintoul won the final round Kingdom Stages Rally outright from Bruce Edwards and Ross Fernie, they were not in the hunt for the overall title Fernie, they were not in the hunt for the overall title this year. That was down to the quite unique class-based points scoring system used by the Blue Scottish Tarmack Championship. Competitors are allowed to score their best 6 results from the 10 round series with each class winner being awarded 15 points, then 12 for second, ten for third, then 9, 8, 7, 6 and so on down 1 point for tenth in class.in class.

However, there is a points Bonus system whereby additional points are awarded depending the numbers of entries received for each class. Basically, the more crews that are entered, the more points are awarded on the basis that there is more competition. Adding to the complexity there is an additional 2 points for each crew for each event they enter. So it's not always the overall for each event they enter. So it's not always the overall winner who scores the most points, it's the one who has scored most Class point during the season.

The winner of the 1400cc capacity class this year was Murray Coulthard in his Suzuki engined Vauxhall Nova overcoming a series of mechanical problems during the year to finish on a high. Earlier in the season, he was getting a but scunnered at times with a series of mechanical failures and breakages: "I just got so fed up taking the thing home and having to fix it all the time, I nearly gave up," said Coulthard, "but I just backed off the pace a wee bit and went for finishes, and there were fewer breakages." A good lesson for us all here, eh?

Ross Carbry finished second in the class after an equally frustrating season in his Corsa but there were sufficient finishes in there to net the runner-up position ahead of 'Mr Consistency', Iain Miller in his wee Peugeot 106.

Former Scottish Champion Allan Brodie won Class 2 in his Escort from the Corsa of Ross Pringle and the Nova of Iain Wilson who only contested three points scoring events during the year.

Class three for 2 litre cars mirrored the overall results, with Class 4 being won by Gary Adam in the over 2 litre 2WD category in his tyre-smoking Escort from Fergus Gray who spent the season grappling with a 3 litre rear wheel drive BMW after previous seasons in a 1.6 FWD Peugeot 206. Championship sponsor Kieran O'Kane finished third in the V6 Opel Ascona. Apparently, this was something of a bonus for O'Kane who said: "I'm only here for the 'craic' anyway!"

In Class 5 for 4WD cars over 2 litres, the honours went to Stuart Paterson after a season long struggle with gearboxes in his Subaru, but perseverance accompanied by quite a few unusual cuss-words along the way paid off. The highlight of the year must be the new event at Machrihanish near Campbeltown. This was a huge gamble by the championship organisers who are always on the look-out for new venues, but it paid off.

Ian Dixon prepares for the 2014International Historic Tulip Rally

The Tulip Historic car Rally which takes place from 4th-10th May 2014 is a gruelling event with various disciplines; starting in France at Lake Annecy and travelling through Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and finishing in Holland. Never having competed in this style of Rally before, it came as a surprise to Ian, member of the MGOC Kingdom club, just what level of compliance was required, to compete in this FIVA event.

Up to this point, Ian has been competing in the NESCRO (North East and Scottish Rally Organization) historic rally series over the past 8 years, initially in a MK11 Escort RS 2000 then in 2010 he decided he needed a change of vehicle, firstly something that was tax exempt and a vehicle that no one else was competing in. After of vehicle, firstly something that was tax exempt and a vehicle that no one else was competing in. After considering his options he chose the MGB and struck a deal buying REN 114K. One or two minor repairs and three years later the car is back on the road fully rally prepared. The restoration consisted of a full strip down to bare shell, welding in new floors and rear arch sections as well as strengthening the suspension mounting points and seam welding. This included incorporating a welded in roll cage complete with door bars. That done it was off to the paint shop for a full British Racing Green re-spray.Whilst the car was being painted the engine was stripped and re-conditioned with a fast road cam and large valve Whilst the car was being painted the engine was stripped and re-conditioned with a fast road cam and large valve head. The box and overdrive units were overhauled with new parts. A further modification to achieve the driving characteristics meant an alteration to the rear axle differential ratio and the fitting of a plate type limited slip differential. Then came re-assembly of all services and ancillaries inside the car, this included a new and designated harness for all the in-car rally equipment.

Thinking the job was done, now there was the compliance needs for the Tulpenrallye. Firstly the car, in order to be eligible, must have been manufactured prior to the 1st January 1972. Suspension, brakes and axle have to be in eligible, must have been manufactured prior to the 1st January 1972. Suspension, brakes and axle have to be in period specification with no dramatic changes, in short it has to be the original specification as applied to the vehicle in its year of manufacture. The softer issues of fire extinguishers, first aid kits and service ground sheets have to be addressed. In Navigating you cannot use GPS; only basic navigation equipment is allowed. Anything showing average speeds is not permitted; your information has to be worked out mechanically.

With the changes now to hand on the MGB GT (affectionately known as “The Beastie” in the Kingdom club) came the real test as to what the car could do. Ian Dixon and his friend Maurice Millar the navigator, have been rallying together for 3 years, in excess of 300 competitive hours together see this challenge as a natural progression from UK based events, also Maurice has covered events, also Maurice has covered several other European events over the years, so together these guys have the makings of a great team.

Asking Ian, “Given that the event and the car are new to you, what is your goal for the Tulpenrallye?” he said, “To complete the event and said, “To complete the event and enjoy the experience”. Ian joins the Rally to make a total of seven entered MG’s. i.e. MGC, MGB Roadster and 5 MGB GT’s competing on a world wide stage of up to 230 cars.

SEAT Leon Cupra 280

It's nearly 20 years since SEAT was actively involved in British rallying and at that time, their association did much to promote the brand amongst motor sports fans and performance car enthusiasts. They also helped Barbara Armstrong to become British Ladies Rally Champion in 1998, beating the Simmonite sisters to the title back when the British Rally Championship was regarded as a significant series in European rallying.

SEAT then moved on to British and World Touring Cars and was a sad loss to rallying as they brought a bit of excitement and razzmatazz to the sport unseen since the days of Rothmans involvement with Ari Vatanen.

Prior to that, the Spanish built SEAT was regarded as an entry level Volkswagen, but as with many other 'national' brands like Skoda and Dacia, the takeover by the more established manufacturers has regenerated the companies and their products.

This new SEAT Leon Cupra is just the latest example of that. This is a car that stands comparison with the best in its class. It is not a blood curdling, arm tugging, front wheel drive screamer though. Like the VW Golf GTi this is an entirely civilised motor car that behaves sensibly during the week then rolls its sleeves up at weekends for a bit of head banging, but without the heavy metal.

It's got a top speed of 155 mph, while the 276 bhp, 2 litre four cylinder TSI engine will get it off its mark and up to 62 mph in well under 6 seconds. It also comes with a paddle-shifting, 6 speed DSG 'box which is a dose of fun on twisty roads making the best of what it's got without ever taking your hands off the wheel.twisty roads making the best of what it's got without ever taking your hands off the wheel.

It's not enough to be comfy and fast these days it has to be clean and frugal too. It manages this rather well with its 154 g/km of CO2 emissions placing it in Band G for VED purposes while economy was surprisingly good at 35 mpg. I say good, because this included a couple of 'spirited' runs though the Dalveen Pass!

Ride quality was a bit of an issue at times, but that was down to the 19 inch alloys with Bridgestone Potenzas. The grip was there but at the expense of comfort over poor surfaces. Having said that, the seats were good, although a bit more foam inside the leather trim might have been a good idea with those roller coaster rims.

In basic spec, the car costs almost £29,000, but In basic spec, the car costs almost £29,000, but this one had a few extras including the leather seats at an extra £765, safety pack with 'Tired Recognition System' £120, Driver Assist Pack with High Beam Assist and Lane Assist £300, and improved sound system £355, Adaptive Cruise Control £505 and a spacesaver spare wheel at £100. It's not just suitable forests that are hard to find, there is a constant need to find a sufficiently big area on which to site the Service Park where the team vans and support cars and crews can congregate to provide the vital back up to the rally crews themselves. Land and premises are constantly changing hands or being developed so this provides as big a concern for organisers as the rally route.

When you add it all up, an entry of around 90 cars, with crews and support crews plus organisers, officials and marshals, will bring over 1,000 people to the area and that's not counting the spectators!

And in a bid to bring something different to their event this year, the Bears had arranged a bit of a Rally Roadshow on the Friday evening. This was made possible because of the excellent auditorium and facilities available within the Breadalbane Community Campus, and what a line-up they had for their Forum panel.
