"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:16 -18). St. Paul's advice to the Thessalonians who were suffering persecution for the faith is the wisdom of God for us in our challenges. It has been an extra challenging year, although we will always face trials and difficulties in this fallen world. No matter the century, it has always been so. St. Paul's words are not only his but God's. They should be our daily response then too. The rejoicing of which Paul speaks is a choice, not a feeling. We can wake up each day and talk to the source of joy, God, and ask Him to help us to rejoice always. It makes a difference in my experience. "Pray without ceasing!" Come on, Paul, that's not possible. It is if we understand prayer is nothing else but becoming a longing for God. Do you long for God, to be united with Him, to be transformed by His love? Ask the Lord when you awake to enkindle your desire to be about God and His purposes in all that you do. We need time that is set aside for God each day for this to be possible, though. "Give thanks in all circumstances!" Now we know Paul has lost it. How am I to give thanks in all circumstances? Many of these I don't like - physical or mental suffering, financial difficulties, and a host of others. It seems crazy, but Paul is correct. Giving thanks in Greek is eucharisteō, which is where we get the word Eucharist. The Eucharist is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus given to us. The Eucharist flows from His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Jesus gives thanks to the Father for Jesus' suffering on our behalf to open to us the gift of eternal life. We, too, can give thanks in all circumstances because of the Eucharist, which points us to eternal life. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). You are loved, wanted, and chosen for eternal life. Now let's go live like we know that. I am thankful for each of you. Giving thanks to the Lord for you, Fr. Browning FATHER BROWNING... "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:16 -18). St. Paul's advice to the Thessalonians who were suffering persecution for the

faith is the wisdom of God for us in our challenges. It has been an extra challenging year, although we will always face trials and difficulties in this fallen world. No matter the century, it has always been so. St. Paul's words are not only his but God's. They should be our daily response then too.

The rejoicing of which Paul speaks is a choice, not a feeling. We can

wake up each day and talk to the source of joy, God, and ask Him to help us to rejoice always.

It seems crazy, but

Paul is correct.

Browning
