The announcement by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson of St.Louis came on February 9th: Father John Horn, S.J., had beenappointed as Rector-President of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, theseminary of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. From that time until thepresent, Father Horn has been moving into his new role. Thoughhis appointment formally begins on July 1st, he has been living in St. Louis since April 1st so as to facilitate the transition.

Serving a seminary community has some familiar elements—Father Horn has been working extensively with diocesanseminarians for all the years of IPF’s existence. Yet, the role ofRector, with its many administrative demands, presents many new challenges.

Nonetheless, the vision for Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, asoutlined by Archbishop Carlson, has a familiar ring to it. In his remarks made at the time of Father Horn’s appointment,Archbishop Carlson indicated that his vision for the Seminary isclearly focused on the Church’s desire for seminaries: “I have had

Dear Friends,

With the announcement of Father John Horn,S.J.’s appointment to the post of rector-president of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis, theInstitute has embarked on a new phase of itsmission. Although we will miss Father Horn’spresence with our Omaha staff, we know that Godwill be doing good things through his mission in St.Louis. We look forward to seeing all that the HolySpirit will bring about through this new initiativeas IPF continues to be at the service of bishops inthe spiritual formation of seminarians and priests. We recently welcomed 175 seminarians from

across the country and beyond for our ten-weekprogram of spiritual formation. They will bejoined by others who will participate in these additional summer programs:Seminar for Seminary Spiritual Directors, The Spiritual Exercises of St. IgnatiusLoyola (30 day retreat) and the Retreat for Seminary Theologians.God’s graces have been abundantly poured out on the Institute in recent months.

We celebrate another successful symposium on the spirituality and identity of thediocesan priest, this most recent one held in collaboration with St. CharlesBorromeo Seminary, Philadelphia. The publication of “WRAP Yourself inScripture,” a helpful guide to lectio divina prayer, authored by Karen and LarryDwyer, marks another milestone in the ongoing work of IPF Publications. Most importantly, the pages of this newsletter contain the names of the many

individuals whose faithful sacrifices are helping to sustain and grow the mission ofIPF. We are deeply grateful to all our friends who have chosen to join with us inthis important task of helping in the spiritual formation of diocesan seminariansand priests. We are especially grateful to those who have responded to our “$20 aMonth Club” and our “Sponsor a Seminarian” initiatives. To all of you we expressour heartfelt thanks!Together let us give praise and thanks to God for the many blessings which have

been poured out on the Institute. Let us pray for God’s continued blessing andprotection of our mission.

Gratefully in the Lord,

Rev. Richard J. GabuzdaExecutive Director

New from IPF PublicationsIPF Publications continues to produce resources for both the seminary world and the spiritual lives of the laity.

Our newest publications cover both of these constituents.

For the laity, we have abeautifully designed book, WRAPYourself in Scripture, leading itsreaders into the fruitful practice oflectio divina. Lectio divina is a wayof reading Scripture as prayer.Recently, Pope Benedict XVIcalled for more leaders in theChurch to instruct others aboutthis ancient practice of prayerfulintimacy with Christ. “Thedocuments produced before andduring the Synod [on the Wordof God] mentioned a number of

methods for a faith-filled and fruitful approach to sacred Scripture.Yet the greatest attention was paid to lectio divina, which is truly‘capable of opening up to the faithful the treasures of God’s word, but also of bringing about an encounter with Christ, the living wordof God’” (Verbum Domini, 2010).

For seminary theologians, wewill release Seminary Theology II:Theology and SpiritualDirection in Dialogue. Thisvolume is the fruit of IPF’s AnnualSeminar for Seminary Theologiansheld each fall on the campus ofCreighton University in Omaha. In this collection of essays, theauthors provide a way to integratethe mission of spiritual directionwith the goals of authenticCatholic theology as taught in theseminary. As one reviewer of thebook noted, “Seminary formation has taken an important stepforward with the publication of this book.”

Healing, Freedom Found in Training Program in Spiritual Direction

By Fr. Peter Williams, priest of the Archdiocese of St.Paul - Minneapolis

I received a letter from my Archbishop inthe spring of 2007 inviting me toparticipate in the Training Program inSpiritual Direction of the Institute forPriestly Formation. As I had been ordainedonly four years at the time and had nodirect experience with IPF, I approached myfirst week with only vague expectations ofwhat to expect, all the while very much atpeace in my Archbishop’s decision.

What I received during the course of that week, and the eightweeks that followed, alongside priests from throughout the country, isdifficult to fully express. The entire experience was a tremendous gift!I was renewed in my identity as a beloved son and as a diocesan priestin ways I did not know that I needed or could even expect from theLord. In learning a new manner of actually being with Jesus in ameaningful way amidst all of life’s unexpected moments in priestlylife and ministry, a new ground for hope opened up before me. Therewas definitely much healing and newfound freedom I received fromthe self-reliant mode that I could so easily find myself slipping into asI responded to the many and diverse needs and responsibilities thatfell to me as a parish priest. Growing as a competent guide for othersin the spiritual life – learning the art of spiritual direction – grewalmost imperceptibly and in proportion to my being more firmlygrounded in my identity as a Beloved Son, Chaste Spouse, SpiritualFather, Spiritual Physician, and Good Shepherd.

Archbishop Carlson Serves as Celebration Speaker

The 340 attendees at IPF’s Celebration of Priesthood banquetwere privileged to hear an address by the Most Rev. Robert J.Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis.

Archbishop Carlson expressed his desire that Father JohnHorn, S. J., in his role as Rector of Kenrick Glennon, integrate inthe Seminary over the next few years, an IPF “model” of spiritualformation. He spoke of this as an “expansion” of the IPF missionand invited those in attendance to pray for the success of this“new experience.”

Archbishop Carlson, who is chairman of the U.S. Conferenceof Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life andVocations, commented further on this model: “In many waysthere’s a need to develop today a new, long-term model forseminary formation that allows the seminarian to become a manof communion . . . who has the capacity to foster and engage inpastoral leadership with Jesus as the model and shepherd.” Headded, “It will be a great blessing for the Church of the UnitedStates and some day, perhaps, beyond.”

At the banquet, the Institute presented its Pope John Paul IIAward for Priestly Service to Msgr. James R. Cain, a retired priestof the Archdiocese of Omaha. In accepting the award, Msgr. Cainsaid, “I’m most grateful for this honor this evening, in honor ofservice not only for myself, of course, but for all of the priestswho are with us this evening. The Priesthood is a precious gift, and we carry it in earthen vessels. Our relationship with the Lordis the only way to serve.”

This past May and going forward I have been given the greatprivilege of serving as a staff member of IPF for the incomingpriests of the Training Program in Spiritual Direction. It was ahumbling honor to witness anew the great hunger that priests haveto live from the deep place of encounter and relationship with theFather in their service to the Church. To accompany brothers onthe path to healing, wholeness, and renewal is a great joy. The HolySpirit is very powerfully at work in the beautiful and timely laborthat is the Institute for Priestly Formation. I am grateful to havereceived a share in the grace and to have been entrusted with ashare in the responsibility. I am and will be a better priest for it.

Fr. Peter Williams

Remembering deceased members of your familyor other treasured loved ones with a financial gift to IPF is also abeautiful way of honoring them. Supporting IPF financially is acompassionate way to assist in the spiritual formation of diocesanpriests and seminarians. IPF is a 501©(3) tax exempt organizationand all gifts are deductible to the extent of the law. To make adonation on line using our secure website, go towww.creighton.edu/ipf/ and click “Donate.”

A beautiful Russian processional, passion crucifix, pictured here, was recently presented to IPF as a gift from Jon and Martha Crane.Jon served IPF as the chairman of the Celebration of PriesthoodUnderwriting Committee in 2009 and Martha has prayed for theseminarians as a Spiritual Mom. The circa 1875 cross, intricatelypainted on both sides in the miniature technique depicting the lifeand passion of Christ, was most likely created in or near the villageof Palekh or by a Palekh artist working in Moscow. The lowermargin of the cross is inscribed with the matins exapostilarionwhich translated reads: The Cross is the guardian of the whole earth;the Cross is the beauty of the Church; the Cross is the strength of kings;the Cross is the support of the faithful; the Cross is the glory of angels;the Cross is the plague of demons. IPF wishes to thank the Cranes fortheir generosity and kindness towards the institute.

Favorable Tax Treatment for IRA Distributions

Congress has extended for 2011 the opportunity to makedistributions from IRAs to charities without triggering any taxconsequences.

Here is a quick overview:• Donors must be age 70 ½ or over.• Gifts to charity can be made in any amount up to $100,000.• Gifts must be made directly to the charity from your IRA.• Gifts from a 401(k) are not eligible but it may be possible to

roll funds from a 401(k) to an IRA and then to the charity.• Gifts are tax free to the donor.

This provision in obviously limited to a specific group but it canbe advantageous to an individual if there are funds in a retirementaccount that will not be needed for retirement. Generally, at age 70 ½one is obligated to start taking the required minimum distributionsfrom an IRA or 401(k), even if the money is not needed. Making adonation to a qualified charity will satisfy the required minimumdistribution (up to the maximum limit of $100,000) and avoidadding such distribution to taxable income.

The Good Shepherd: Living Christ’s Own Pastoral Authority

In March we saw the annual IPF Symposium successfullyhosted by St. Charles Seminary in Philadelphia. This year’s themewas The Good Shepherd: Living Christ’s own Pastoral Authority. TheSymposium attracted priests and laity from around thePhiladelphia region as well as all the seminarians from St. Charles.Cardinal Rigali visited the Symposium to preside at evening prayer.

The keynote speaker this year was Bishop Samuel Aquila of theDiocese of Fargo, North Dakota. Bishop Aquila gave a dynamicand prophetic speech challenging the seminarians and priestspresent to ask this question, “Do I desire to be possessed by theauthority of Christ or do my ears itch for teachers suited to myliking, moving away from the truth, and entering into the myths ofthe present age?” (2 Timothy 4: 3-4). The Bishop further exhorted

the audience with these word, “Our world today is in urgent needof Jesus Christ, and while the world sees Jesus as ‘out of season’, weas the servants of Christ and the Church must teach boldly andwithout hesitancy. The ‘new evangelization’ means following theexample of Jesus as observed in the Gospels. With personalconviction we need to rediscover the vigor and boldness of theteaching authority of Christ exhibited by St. Paul, the Fathers of theChurch, and the saints and martyrs who have gone before us. “

Other speakers were Sr. Gill Goulding, Fr Scott Traynor, Fr.James Rafferty, Fr. Jon Vander Ploeg, Fr. Albert Esposito, andMsgr. Gregory Schlesselman. IPF is grateful to Fr. ShaunMahoney and the Staff of St. Charles for all they did to welcomethis symposium into their seminary. Further thanks to the EsseffFoundation for their financial assistance. Symposium attendees listen to a presentation.
