On the relationship between artist and stone, Rupnik said: “When we cut a stone, we must hear it, we must be tuned in it, avoiding to go down with force and imposing our will. An artwork is borning from a dialogue in which the artist collaborates with matter in a mutual help bringing out to light the deepest meaning. Imposing our will makes a bad service to art and deceives us in life. In the mosaic, the spaces between the figures should be treated with equal attention and creative force as the figures themselves. The figures are like words, they are such as speeches. The spaces role is creating the right condition by which we can take up these words. The eye glides over the stones colors and movements; so we may hear a beauty echo in the soul. And only the beauty – because love is realized – is capable to create the right attitude to listen and understand. “

Father Marko Ivan Rupnik is a Slovenian Jesuit (born November 28, 1954), based in Rome, whose mosaics adorn churches at Fatima and Lourdes, in Madrid, Rome or Milan, in Cluj-Napoca Romania as well as the Pope’s private chapel in Vatican. The website for the Centro Aletti displays him and his workshop`s works in abundance

The work was completed in five days during June 2007. Marko Rupnik lead a 11 persons team from different nationalities, formed and supported by competent people who deal with theological, symbolic, historical, iconographic and artistic point of view about the images to create. The harmony we admire in the mosaic is also the result of the fraternity that artists lived together, respecting single diversity and identity. While each artist composed his mosaic’s part, silence prevailed. Each artist has to dialogue with the stones. And the stones answer, obey and communicate with heart’s artist.

Marko Rupnik says: “The world is understood only in light. Things, objects, nature and man himself are only understood in the light. According to the Creator and His Wisdom, the truth is the light of the world and all that exists. But man cannot look at the light. It would be too much! The source of light is behind and beyond. Here are the colors. The experience of light is the colors festival!”
