In light of the violent and tragic incident in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the subsequent events and media coverage, one can wonder how to respond. What can one say or do? A basic first step is to state unequivocally that racism is contrary to our Catholic Christian faith; no ifs, ands or buts. Another needed response is to raise our voices to defend the human dignity of all members of our society without exception. These events also challenge us to examine our consciences and honestly face any strands of bias, discrimination and racism that may exist in our thoughts, words or actions. It is a lifelong effort to eradicate prejudices that we have learned. And, of course, we must pray and ask God to help us to reflect the goodness and mercy of our Creator and Redeemer. I found the following prayer on the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) website:

PRAYER FOR PEACE IN OUR COMMUNITIES

Let us pray . . .

O Lord our God, in your mercy and kindness, no thought of ours is left unnoticed, no desire or concern ignored.

You have proven that blessings abound when we fall on our knees in prayer, and so we turn to you in our hour of need.

Surrounded by violence and cries for justice, we hear your voice telling us what is required . . . “Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Mi 6:8).

Fill us with your mercy so that we, in turn, may be merciful to others.

Strip away pride, suspicion, and racism so that we may seek peace and justice in our communities.

Strengthen our hearts so that they beat only to the rhythm of your holy will.

Flood our path with your light as we walk humbly toward a future filled with encounter and unity.

Be with us, O Lord, in our efforts, for only by the prompting of your grace can we progress toward virtue.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Loyola Homecoming September 29

New and returning staff met last week for prayer, discussions about Loyola’s mission and culture, Mass with the Sisters, orientation, Virtus training, CPR and First Aid training, technology updates, and team building for the new year.

All School Round Up last Thursday consisted of Classroom Meetings for K-6, orientation for grades 7-10 and College Night for grades 11&12.

Did you know? Loyola has added a new feature to our PS program: Preschool Plus, an extended day program giving our preschoolers in morning classes the option of staying at Loyola until the end of the day.

Fall sports began the week of August 14: boys and girls soccer, football, cross country, volleyball, and junior high football and volleyball teams will meet for practice.

Did you know? In the fall of 1865 three School Sisters of Notre Dame and a Postulant arrived at SSPP parish to open the first Catholic school in southern Minnesota. Just 9 years later the Jesuit priests arrived to minister to the people of Mankato.
