PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello, I'm finding it hard to believe it is May and the temper-ature is not much warmer than it was in March. I hope we can get some warmer weather for our FBINAA Michigan Chapter Golf Outing on June 6th at the Links of Novi. The outing is to raise money for the college scholarship pro-gram. It is our only fundraiser of the year for the program. We give four scholarships a year for four years, to four de-serving students. In order to keep this going we need to have support from our members. Information and registra-

tion forms are on our website.

On April 25th, we had our Spring Luncheon with our guest speaker Mr. Dan Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert is an extremely smart man with the energy and commitment to make a difference in the city of Detroit. He has a great story to tell and his style of leader-ship is what has made him so successful. I appreciated that he took the time out of his busy day to talk with us.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Paul Abbate attended the event, displaying his full support for the National Academy. He flew in from Quantico on Friday morning just so he could attend the Spring Luncheon, which is truly appreciated, thank you SAC Abbate.

Our fall conference scheduled for September 3rd to September 5th promises to be one of the best ever. We already have presenters on the Boston Marathon Bomb-ings and the investigation of the subsequent shooting in Waterton, as well as Dr. Kevin Gilmartin who will speak about emotional survival. The conference will be at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City. I encourage all of our members to at-tend and support your Michigan Chapter of the National Academy Associates. I want to thank Garth Burnside and Darryl Hill; the co-chairmen of the Curriculum Committee for organizing such a fantastic conference.

This wouldn't be an article if I didn't mention how important it is to get active in chapter events and attend the National Conference. It ensures contacts with other NA graduates and provides numerous training opportunities.

Before I close, I want to recognize the FBINAA Michigan Chapter Executive Board. Past President Gary Mayer, Treasurer Bob Young, Secretary Ed Harris, Members Tom Lindberg, Chris (PITA) Jahnke, Jason Wright, Retiree Representative Pierre Fortier, and last but not least Maureen Reddy; our FBI Liaison. Each bring some-thing unique to the board, each is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and each is a true friend who makes the board meetings, not so boring. Thank you to each of them for all they do. As always, please take care and stay safe.

FALL TRAINING CONFERENCE

This year’s Conference is being held at the Grand Traverse Resort located in Acme, Michigan on Septem-

ber 3rd, 4th, & 5th, 2014. In the upcoming weeks, a flyer will be emailed out to over 50 Vendors this year.

You and your Company are invited to partner up with our Association and enable you to showcase your

products for display and network with the Law Enforcement Community in Michigan. Further details are

forthcoming on this networking and sales opportunity. Please feel free to share/forward this with other com-

panies that may be interested in this Fall event with the FBI National Academy Associates of Michigan.

If you have not paid your 2014 dues there is still time! Dues must be paid to attend State & National

FBINAA functions. FBINAA National no longer allows chapters to accept dues. Please pay dues directly to

FBINAA National, either at http://www.fbinaa.org with credit card or mail a check to the National office at

422 Garrisonville Road, Suite 103, Stafford, VA 22554. This is for both state and national dues. National

reimburses the chapters their state dues.

The exception to this is those who wish to pay Michigan dues only that are $15. Michigan Chapter dues

can be paid on the Michigan Chapter website, http://www.fbinaamichigan.org by using credit card or send

Treasurer’s Report

As a fully consolidated public safety department, the Petoskey Department of Public Safety provides law enforce-ment, fire, and emergency medical services to the citizens and visitors of the city. This becomes even more chal-lenging in the summer months, as Petoskey is a resort/destination location, and the population swells from about 6,000 year-long residents to an average daily population three or four times that number.

Petoskey Department of Public Safety: Self-Inspection Program

Many of the buildings in the city, especially downtown, are old, have little or no fire suppres-sion capabilities, and pose a significant risk to residents and visitors.

In 2013 the Petoskey Department of Public Safe-ty initiated a Business Self-Inspection Pro-gram. This program is in accordance with the International Fire Code, and is intended to assist Petoskey business owners/ managers in promot-ing a safer year round environment.

This self-inspection program is free of charge and is designed primarily for businesses with a relatively low hazard for fire and life-safety con-cerns.

Low hazard occupancies are locations where there is a small amount of combustible materials, including furnish-ings, decorations, and contents.

The primary buildings targeted for this program are office buildings, small retail shops, small personal service shops, and small apartment complexes with three or more units.

This self-inspection program will allow these lower hazard businesses to be inspected by business owners on a 24 month inspection cycle.

The Petoskey Department of Public Safety wants this program to be successful. To that end we made the process as user friendly as possible. By following the simple enclosed instructions business owners and managers are able to easily conduct the inspection, and at their convenience. Of course if there were any questions or concerns or someone needed help with their self-inspection, the Public Safety Department was available to answer questions and give advice.

In 2013, over 150 self-inspection surveys were distributed, mostly to downtown businesses. The department received about 40% of them back, and we are currently following up with many business owners who want officers to help them conduct the walk-through and sur-vey. The feedback from the community has been overwhelming posi-tive.

The city may consider a more comprehensive business inspection pro-gram in the future. Until then, the self-inspection program will help keep the businesses, residents, and visitors of the city just a little bit safer.

This program is just one example of our ongoing partnership with not only the community, but with other depart-ments within our city. It is vital that we continually look for overlaps to increase quality while improving efficiencies; reducing costs while providing that little extra enhancing the quality of life for our residents and visitors.

The entire Executive Board wishes everyone a successful career. Please remember that you are part of a great family and participation in chapter events is strongly encouraged. Your net working opportunities do not stop at the NA Academy; it only opens the door to a larger group of like individuals with different problem solving strategies. So just don’t hang that sheepskin on the wall—take advantage of all ventures that the Michigan Chapter has to offer upon your return.

We would also like to congratulate class 254 upon their return to the NA Academy too complete their session. They were sent home for lack of funds in July of 2013 during the government shut down.

FBINAA Michigan Chapter 2014 Spring Training Event

This year’s Spring Training Event was held on April 25, 2014, at the Detroit Greektown-Casino Hotel. The 106 members and guests attendees were intrigued by our guest speaker Mr. Dan Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert is the Founder and Chairman of Rock Ventures and Quicken Loans, and the majority owner of the Cleveland Cav-aliers. Mr. Gilbert spoke to our membership about his investment in the city of Detroit, to include his recent acquisition of the Detroit Greektown-Casino and the import role that law enforcement plays in making the Detroit Downtown Business District safe for employees and visitors.

Once again, this FBINAA Michigan Chapter Training Event provided a great opportunity for our membership to network with other law enforcement and private sector executives. I would like to thank our Chapter Board and Curriculum Committee for a successful and well attended event.

2014 Golf Outing June 6th, 2014 By: Garth Burnside

The FBI National Academy Associates, Michigan Chapter, annual golf outing will take place on June 6

th,

2014. Again this year, the day’s events will begin with a continental breakfast at 7:30am with a shotgun start at 8:30am. Lunch will be provided at the turn with a BBQ dinner to accompany the awards ceremony.

Once again, our host will be the Links of Novi located at 50395 Ten Mile Road Novi, MI 48395. They have completed a remodeling of their clubhouse as well as upgrading other building amenities to make their events even more enjoyable.

This year, the cost will again be $100 per golfer with the proceeds above our costs going towards the Chapters’ college scholarship fund. This is an important endeavor and a way we can continue to support our youth and education.
