Seven members of the local chapter competed in five events at the annual state FBLA conference in Atlanta this past week- end: James Bran- non and Keyla Alvarez – Busi- ness Presenta- tion, Belinda Bell – Public Speak- ing I, Kaitlyn Bo- swell – Introduc- tion to Business Communication, Addie Capuson – Introduction to Business Communication, Hannah Fortner – Word Processing I and Public Speaking I, and Stephan Rolle – Public Speaking II. FBLA recog- nizes the top ten in each event. Hannah Fortner won fiſth place in Public Speak- ing I. is event recognizes FBLA members who are beginning to develop qualities of busi- ness leadership by develop- ing effective speaking skills. It consists of a four minute speech. e speech must be of a business nature and must be developed from one or more of the nine FBLA- PBL goals. Hannah also won tenth place in Word Processing I. is event recognizes FBLA members who demonstrate that they have acquired entry level skills for word processing positions in busi- ness. It consists of two parts: an objective test and a produc- tion test. Partici- pants must complete both parts to be eligible to win an award. A one hour ob- jective test is administered based on the ob- jective test com- petencies. e score received on this portion of the event will constitute fiſteen percent of the fi- nal event score. One hour will be given for the pro- duction test at a school site designated by the state chair/ state adviser. e score re- ceived on this portion of the event will constitute 85 per- cent of the final event score. Hannah, a sophomore, is the daughter of Jennifer and Michael Hagler of Donal- sonville and Mike Fortner of Blakely. Stephan Rolle won sev- enth place in Public Speak- ing II. is event recog- nizes FBLA members who, through public speaking, demonstrate qualities of business leadership by pre- senting a well-organized, logical, and substantial speech. e event consists of the five minute speech. e speech must be of a business nature and must be devel- oped from one or more of the nine FBLA-PBL goals. Stephan, a junior, is the son of Stephan Rolle of Donal- sonville and Joetta Rolle of Andrews, SC. e chapter was recog- nized for achieving Honor Roll Recognition in the Chapter of Year event and the 50 Member Club Award. Stephan Rolle and James Brannon were recognized for serving as Region Officers during 2012-2013. e competition was part of a weekend conference for FBLA members from across the state of Georgia, with more than 3,500 high school students attending. Students also participated in various workshops for leadership training, FBLA officer train- ing, college and career prepa- ration, and personal finance. e group was accompanied to Atlanta by advisers, Mrs. Kim Orrick and Mrs. Kath- ryn Trawick. Future Business Lead- ers of America is the oldest and largest national organi- zation for students prepar- ing for careers in business leadership. FBLA prepares students for “real world” professional experiences. Members gain the com- petitive edge for college and career successes.
