Newsletter INDEX March 2013 fc cartons has again featured in Folding Carton magazine (January/February 2013 issue) with an article covering significant events for the company during 2012, including acquiring BRC High Risk accreditation, investing in a second stream for our Heiber + Schröder CE1000 tray former, becoming carbon neutral and winning the North West Leicestershire Green Footprints Business Award. The majority of these events were some time in the planning but the award was a nice surprise and a great night to boot. David Woodyatt, our Managing Director comments, “We were very pleased to feature in Folding Carton’s latest publication and we’re very grateful for their support. 2012 was quite a year for us and a number of milestones in the company’s history were reached in those twelve months. The pinnacle had to be BRC certification. It was probably around eighteen months ago that we began to be approached by companies we hadn’t previously worked with, asking us if we would consider acquiring BRC/IOP Global Food Packaging Standard. We looked into it but we knew the Standard was about to be updated, so we decided to wait until the revised Standard was issued before commencing. Kath Moulds, BRC Consultant from Linden Management (UK) Ltd and some of our customers felt that we weren’t so far away from gaining the accreditation as we already had rigorous procedures in place for our ISO accreditations. It was very pleasing to hear Kath’s comments regarding the commitment of the team, as with everything else, it’s the team’s collective efforts that have got us to where we are, and we’ve had some great feedback from customers on our achievement too. The work we carry out on the nested tray forming machine continues to take us into market sectors we had never imagined, and I’m sure this will continue to be the case as the use of plastics in packaging decreases further. Becoming carbon neutral last year is an achievement we are very proud of and we’re pleased with the calculations for 2012, but will continue to measure, reduce and off-set wherever we can and if we are able to improve on things, we will.” Should you wish to discuss any of our capabilities, please call David Woodyatt on 01332 850648 or email david@fccartons.co.uk www.fccartons.co.uk PAGE 1 Folding Carton looks back at 2012 with fc cartons PAGE 2 Team fc Helping Others PAGE 3 Capabilities of fc cartons Off-setting our carbon emissions Carbon Neutral status update Internal promotions PAGE 4 Personal Profile - Steve Hallam Team Talk New Signing: second stream for our Heiber + Schröder CE1000 tray former LOOKS BACK AT 2012 WITH

This year a select group from fc took part in the increasingly popularfundraising event of Movember. As you may be aware, during themonth of November lots of men join in this annual fundraising eventby cultivating moustaches with varying degrees of success, as youcan imagine. The aim of this event is to raise vital funds andawareness for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicularcancer. We set up a Just Giving page and managed to raise £70.According to the Movember website, since the idea first got off theground in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 a whopping £184 millionpounds has been raised, and that doesn’t include the total raised in2012 as those figures haven’t yet appeared on the website.

THE MOVEMBER MEN OF fc cartons

We have been very pleased to be associated with local basketballteam Derby Trailblazers in support of their new kit. Our Directors’younger son Charlie Woodyatt plays in the under 14’s team and is inhis second season with the team. Based at Noel Baker School, inAlvaston, Derby, the team has had an influx of new players thisseason but they remain in a reasonably strong position to end theirseason. This Christmas we chose once againto make a donation to TreetopsHospice in Risley, Derbyshire. In yearsgone by we have bought charityChristmas cards, but when wedecided we would like to design ourown cards, we didn’t like to think thata charity would no longer benefit so

for every card we sent out we pledged to make a donation toTreetops, which is not only a local charitybut one that is dear to the hearts of ourDirectors. Our donation this year was £150.If you would like to find out more about thefantastic work this charity does, their webaddress iswww.treetopshospice.org.uk

TREETOPS HOSPICE GOLF DAY

Back in September we took part inthe World’s Biggest Coffee Morning insupport of Macmillan Cancer Support. We had planned an article on this forour November newsletter but ran outof space so although it’s old news wewanted to thank everyone who came

along to sample our baking. We invited customers, friends, suppliers and neighbours to pop in on the morning of 28thSeptember to have a tea or coffee and some homemade cakes.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event started back in 1990when just one fundraising committee decided to hold a coffeemorning where people could have a chat, a drink and enjoy acake, as well as being able to make a donation to the cancercharity. The first national event took place the following year, andsince then it has raised over £60 million for Macmillan CancerSupport. Last year alone a record £14,778,141 was raised. Thecoffee mornings, held across the UK, are now the charity’sbiggest fundraiser in the calendar and they’re a fantastic way toenjoy a coffee with friends, family, customers, suppliers andwork colleagues.

We had a lovely time at our coffee morning, sampling somedelicious cake and cookie contributions from staff and theiroffspring too. Cupcakes, fairycakes, Victoria sponge, chocolate caramel shortcake, chocolate cake, coconut meltingmoments and carrot cake wereall on offer, and we’re delightedto say that we raised £125. A bigthank you to everyone who eithermade cakes or came to eatthem!

OFF-SETTING OUR CARBON EMISSIONS2013 will be the seventh year of tree planting for our companyand we are continuing to offset our waste against tree planting. Our chosen woodland last year was Poppy Wood in Melbourne,Derbyshire as it is so close to us here in Castle Donington, andwe have chosen the same scheme this year - supporting theplanting of 17 trees. The woodland forms part of the Queen’sJubilee Wood in the National Forest and it is actually now nearingcompletion with around 30,000 trees planted with the support ofmany people, particularly small to medium sized businesses. Thesite is situated on the northern boundary of the Forest and ispopular with people travelling from Derby and Nottingham. It hasbeen developed to show the different woodland types andmanagement methods that can be seen throughout the 200square miles of the National Forest. We are delighted to havebeen involved with this project.http://www.nationalforest.org

We are delighted to announce two promotions in the company. Thefirst is Machine Minder Chris Greensmith who has now taken on theadditional role of team leader. Chris has been with us since 2004. Nextwe have Steve Furniss who joined us in November 2010 as a TraineeMachine Minder, and he has now completed his training on the nestedtray forming machine. Liam Cox, our Operations Manager, gives somebackground.

CHRIS GREENSMITH – Team Leader

The Team Leader role came about because of the continued growthat fc cartons. We’ve had the addition of new machinery and newlyacquired accreditations to comply with the requirements of ourcustomers, and this in turn has required an increase in staff numbersand greater planning. It soon became apparent that I would needsome assistance if we were to continue to provide the service levelsour customers expect, as well as some additional support inmanaging a large team of production staff. I chose Chris for this roleas he has numerous years of experience on the shop floor and hasgained good product knowledge whilst being a gluing minder forsome fifteen years. Chris also demonstrated all of fc cartons’ corevalues - care, ability, trustworthiness and job ownership, to name buta few. Chris will be Team Leader across all departments of theproduction facility, as well as overseeing our quality and hygienestandards. I look forward to working with Chris, and I see this as aprogression not only for Chris and myself, but for fc cartons as awhole.

STEVE FURNISS – Machine Minder

Steve has been with us since November 2010, having already gainedseven years experience in the carton industry with a previousemployer. Shortly after he arrived we invested in a nested tray formingmachine and Steve was given the opportunity to develop his skillsfurther and train on the new machine. I have to say he workedtirelessly on getting this machine up and running, and it was his no-nonsense approach coupled with his ability and commitment thatgave us the confidence to invest in a brand new machine. With thefurther development of Steve’s skills, the increase in demand for thistype of carton and his willingness to work nights (along with othermembers of our team), he gave us the confidence to invest furtherand add another stream to the nester in order to increase productionand turnaround time. I know that Steve is keen to move on to thegluing machines and the more complex cartons, and at the same timeto help develop the skills of other members of the team on the nester.
