Nature Notes by Roseanne Guerra, Secretary of FCHOA & Atlanta Audubon Master Birder

The Mystery of Winter Hummingbirds Lots of Forest Chase residents enjoy hummingbirds. What’s not to enjoy? Beautiful iridescent colors and that spunky (bossy?) attitude is a hoot. Hummingbirds are our smallest birds, and ruby-throated hummingbirds are what you will see at your feeders in the summertime. Typically, ruby-throats arrive here in mid-March and leave in mid-October. At 3-4 grams, a ruby-throated hummingbird weighs less than one nickel, and yet these tiny birds migrate from here to Mexico and Central America. Some of them fly nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico! It seems impossible.

What a lot of folks DON’T know is that Georgia is seeing an increasing number of winter hummers, and they are not our usual ruby-throats. 12 different species have been sighted in Georgia in the winter. The most common winter hummer is the rufous. The females can be mistaken for a female ruby-throated, but the male is a bright rusty-orange instead of our usual green. In fact, when I did some research for this article, I learned that a rufous hummingbird was captured and banded DIRECTLY BEHIND MY HOUSE in Cook’s Valley in November of last year (and the year before that!).

Well, that does it. I am going to leave my hummingbird feeder up this winter. If you decide to put out a feeder as well, just be sure to bring it in for hard freezes (or your glass may crack). It’s best to make your own nectar: one part regular table sugar to four parts water. In the summer, I make a big batch and keep it in the fridge for easy refilling. You don’t have to change out your nectar as often in winter (bonus!).

If you see ANY hummingbirds between November 1st-March 1st, please report your bird to the Georgia Hummer Study Group at GAhummer.org, and of course I would certainly appreciate it if you let

ME know! They will send a licensed bander to your yard to capture and band your bird. It’s a great opportunity for an up-close encounter and to contribute to science.

Interested in watching a hummingbird banding event? Smith-Gilbert Gardens in West Cobb (about 13 miles from Forest Chase) hosts an event every August. The banders often let an audience member hold a hummer as it is released. Very cool.

Enjoy your fall and winter, everyone, and keep a sharp eye out for any hummingbirds!

I prefer Winter and Fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape — the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show. ~Andrew Wyeth

www.ForestChase.orgThe website is going strong and being updated all the time. The Board of Directors hopes you’ll take the time to visit and use it as a resource.

Nextdoor Forest ChaseThe Nextdoor Forum is going great! We currently have 129 neighbors registered on Nextdoor! What a great way to communicate.

There is also a Holiday Cheer Map function this month for local events, check it out.

Nextdoor shows Forest Chase and 16 nearby neighborhoods. You can choose whether to follow just us or all 17.

Categories on Nextdoor include: Classifieds, Crime and Safety, Documents, Free items, Lost n’ Found, General and Recommendations.

The biggest complaint on Nextdoor is the amount of emails sent by this free program. Easy fix, PLEASE change your settings to avoid getting too many emails. If you want to adjust your email notifications click on your name at the top of the computer screen and select “settings”. The “help” section is also a great way to learn about Nextdoor.

Got a NEW NeighborA great way to welcome a new neighbor is to tell them about the welcome pdf that is located on our website. www.ForestChase.org This interactive pdf is PACKED with resources for a new resident to find their way around utlities, schools, licensing and so much more. Please be friendly by telling them it’s available to them.

Community Watch“It takes a village.”

Let’s band together to prevent damage to property and feelings. If you see any suspicious behavior note it and then contact the police. They are only a call away.

Holiday decorations are expensive and sentimental to folks in Forest Chase. Please keep an eye out for vandals during this festive season.

Please clean up all holiday decor by Feb. 1, 2016 at the latest. We enjoy them, but not all year.

SUPPORTING THE YOUTH!

Samuel Ginn (15 years old) has done two jobs here in Forest Chase and been paid by the FCHOA. He delivered and spread new pine straw at both entrances. He spread mulch that was donated at the common property and he cleaned up the sticks and brush at the common land as well. Samuel has been professional and courteous. It’s great to witness and work with a local teen working in our community and making money doing it.

GREAT JOB SAMUEL!

Before: Rotten, wasp infested, water damaged, broken down and ugly were a few ways to describe the sign at Jims Road entrance to Forest Chase. It was in need of some serious TLC. Mike Flahie (our resident handyman savior!) came to the rescue. A big HUGE thank you to Mike and Leslie for their continued commitment to make Forest Chase a wonderful place to call home.

After: The sign has a fresh coat of paint, new wood to support the door opening and closing. Also the wasps have decided to move to another neighborhood. We wish them the best.

UPDATES: Merry Christmas. I went to both entrances this morning and decorated them from 9 am until 12:30 pm. Many people even stopped and waved to me. I hope you enjoy them on your way home from work.

After further investigation the electrical is indeed damaged at the Jamerson Road entrance and an electrician has been called to troubleshoot the issue. This might be due to the ants that also damaged the wiring on the sprinkler system, not sure yet. The GFCI outlet will not reset which is affecting the flood light outlet and the general outlet for holiday lights. This was fixed on 12/16/15.The inside of the communication board at the Jims Rd. entrance is being replaced currently and should be done by Jan. 1. 2016. Weather stripping has been installed in an effort to try and stop water damage in this sign.

The Forest Chase Board of Directors appreciates all households that pay their dues every year and on time as well. These kinds of repairs cost money and can’t be done for free. Our annual dues fundraiser begins

January 1, 2016 and look forward to your payment. We also appreciate ALL of the volunteer hours given to our community, if anyone wants to lend a hand with any neighborhood needs please reach out to: [email protected].
