VALLEY of EUGENE

INTRODUCTION

The site of the present city of Eugene attracted early

settlers in the mid-1800 1 s due to its 'being at the head of

Willamette River navigation' possibilities. The area was no-

table also for its rich forestry products and agricultural po

tential. It is the County Seat of Lane County which was so

named for the first Governor of Oregon Territory , Joseph Lane.

Organized Freemasonry began, officially, in Eugene with

the granting of a Dispensation for Spencer Butte Lodge, U.D .

by Deputy Grand Master Alfred M. Belt September 15 , 1855.

This was announced at the Sixth Annual Connnunication in Port-

land June 9-11, 1856; John C. Ainsworth was Grand Master, and

Oregon Grand Lodge voted to issue a Charter as Eugene City

Lodge #11 June 10, 1856 .

Blue Lodge Masonry has continued to expand in this Dis-

trict (#20) to include five additional Lodges: Thurston Lodge

#28, Harrisburg [Chartered September 18, 1860); Junction City

Lodge #128, Junction City [Chartered June 14, 1906]; McKenzie

River Lodge #195, Eugene [Chartered June 16, 1927] ;Wayfarer

Lodge #213 , Eugene [Chartered June 11, 1953); and Emerald

Lodge #222, Eugene [Chartered June 11, 1964].

Although evident in the upper Willamette River Valley

much earlier , organized Scottish Rite Freemasonry began Oc

* tober 22, 1915, 44 years after Eugene Lodge #11 was Chartered .

e. Meeting Places/Temples

Until 1926 the Eugene Scottish Rite Bodies met in a build

ing at 45 West Eighth Street; this was its first 'home'. The

building housed the U.S. Post Office on the ground floor, and

Eugene Lodge #11 owned the building and occupied the entire

second floor.

Eugene Lodge #11 owned a second building located at

Tenth and Olive Streets, and rented space in it to the Scottish

Rite Bodies from 1926 to its final meeting in that locat ion on

June 6, 1972.

During the interval between June and September, 1972,

Eugene Lodge 1fll moved into a building located at 2777 Gen-

tennial Boulevard, and the Scottish Rite Bodies met here be-

ginning with the meeting of September 5, 1972, and continued

meeting here until December 13, 1973.

Bro. Richard E. Marshall, 32°, KCCH was Master of the

Lodge of Perfection when he appointed a Building Committee

December 16, 1958 to search for a suitable building to pur-

chase and remodle to its own needs.

The Committee, later named the Eugene Scottish Rite As

sociat ion; with the Lodge of Perfection and the Moose Lodge

in a joint meeting in December 1973, determined that the

Moose Lodge Building at 1635 West Thirteenth Avenue could,

with numerous changes and improvements, become a satisfactory

Temple and 'permanent home' for the Scottish Rite Bodies. A

sale was negotiated.

The building was purchased and extensive changes were made;

some ~f which are: it was repainted outside; an overhead, modern.

fire-extinguishing sprinkler system was installed; the in

side was completely remodeled and painted. It is now the ex

cellent Temple expected and deserved by its hardworking, for

ward-looking Brethren. Much of the planning and execution of

the refurbishing of the facility was accomplished by Bro. Ly-

man F. Coburn, 33°, who was Personal Representative in Eugene

many years - following this time period. The first meeting in the new Temple was January 8, 1974.
